It's really cool how Hopkins got into character for his response to Crystal. Completely summoned Lecter from within, knowing everyone would hear the response. Hopkins is legendary.
Few remember this was the year of the JFK movie, one of the best movies ever. It had both artistic and historical significance. Instead, they gave the Oscar to a movie about a deranged human with cannibalistic instincts. This was the year the Academy lost a huge chunk of credibility.

James Wade the least funny human being i know, is Jay Leno😹 but your right Anthony jumper straight in to the caracter saying anytime. Hopkins is really a fantastic actor and a fantastic human being!
Anthony, a legendary gentleman, stood up and asked how was Billy. And Billy just answered almost whispering. This little private conversation reveals the humble personality of both actors.
Hannibal Lecter has been ranked as the most intimidating villain of all time. I agree that The Silence of the Lambs is a masterpiece, and I bet if the role of Hannibal Lecter was casted differently, it may not be the masterpiece that it is. Hopkins was BRILLIANT as Dr. Lecter.
I love the way Billy Crystals voice quakes when repeats "Anytime," the power of sir Anthony Hopkins acting can be felt even through a small bit of improvisation.
Ana Perez because he knows what he doing.. at adware shows.. you entertain.. that’s it you came to entertain.. host around and let politics out of it..
When Billy asked Anthony I'm having a couple of academy over for dinner if Mr Hopkins would of just said "I'll bring the Chianti."I think Billy would have fell out
@Chuckles McGee It makes sense to me considering Anthony Hopkins played Hannibal and even outside of the movie he manages to carry the same creepy factor in this unrehearsed skit. As for the chills it depends on what I'm watching.
Billy Crystal has been and still is one of the best Oscar hosts of all times. It's fun, and in such a non-offensive way, without needing to be woke or politics involved. I really long for those times.
Hannibal (Silence of the Lambs) is one of the most chilling performances I've ever seen. So short, and yet so brilliantly done. When he killed Pembry... wow Oh my God!!!
I miss Billy at the Oscars, I think it would be so cool if one year when its time for the final award they say “...please welcome an old friend...” and he’d walk out. Guaranteed to bring a mix of cheers and tears
Anthony Hopkins could stand and read the phone book on stage and his work is still head and shoulders above the majority of his acting peers. His performance as Lecter is indellible and his acting in Merchant's "Remains Of The Day", "Howard's End" " Nixon" and many others is superb. I look forward to seeing his portrayal of Hitchcock.
I absolutely loved watching the Oscars back then. So much fun and wonderful actors. We’d make it a night and have dinner and drinks while we watched. Haven’t watched it in years. It’s so changed. 😔

James Drynan I too caught the Jack Benny gesture. A lot of us old fans would have related to it. A great blending of a very scary theatrical character and a beloved, perennial "39" year old violinist.
Silence of the Lambs was such a huge film in it's day, it made a ton of money and got nominated for lots of awards and I think it swept the big ones, Best Pic, director, lead male and female. Such a clever and unexpected way to open. Kudos to Crystal and his writing team, people were laughing in the audience before he said a word, all they had to do was roll him on stage with that mask and the laughs started. Brilliant and simple.
This is the reason why the Academy used Billy Crystal several times. Many considers this is the greatest and funniest moment of Crystal's turn as an Oscars host
Anthony Hopkins has two oscars one for The Father and Slience Of The Lambs. He deserved it and seeing him laugh at Billy Crystal make me smile even more you knew Anthony Hopkins won the oscar when Billy Crystal shook his hand. Total class. Jodie Foster won best actress and she deserved it as well. The idea that Kathy Bates handed Anthony Hopkins the oscar was epic and Kathy Bates is so classy and she won for Misery.
