Great analysis for the regular user Jake ! Not quite as useful for an old guy that plays mainly classic rock, but you did reference that and stated that your preferred level of bass is not necessary for standard kick drum rock and roll! Therefore, you covered all the bases in your review. Come on companies, give Jake some equipment to evaluate or maybe throw him a sponsorship. We all listen and resorb Jake’s evaluations.
I'm more of a traditional 12" in a generic carpeted box, held to the trunk of the car with 1 tek screw, sound system. But maybe now il look at some BMW wrecks
Manual seats. Interesting spec. Although I think power seats are overhyped. Never thought the base stereo in my E92 sounded that great - this is tempting.
I think the next move after the subs is to upgrade the amp. If you have the Hi-Fi option (not Logic7 or Harman Kardon) there is a $80 adapter kit that allows you to attach a 6 channel amp in place of the factory trunk amplifier.
@@100PercentJake I think mine is the logic7 - honestly like you said, the factory stereo is pretty good - but I'm trying to get all of the OEM+ type upgrades while they still exist for a car I plan to hang on to forever. $250 was a steal for the subs
So one important detail since you bought them used. Bavsound makes different impedance versions of the subwoofers because the impdeances vary between stock bmw sound systems. You have the hifi system, meaning your subwoofers were 2ohm. So I hope these replacements were also 2ohm. But there is a big chance they are 4ohm, meant for logic 7/harman kardon. Now whats the difference between 2ohm and 4ohm? With 4ohm you have half the watts going to the subwoofe.
Very old comment but in case someone is wondering what would happen…having stock 2 ohm with replacement 2 ohm no difference in power output if you had 4 ohm and installed 2 ohm speakers/subwoofers you would increase power output but hopefully having the amp 2 ohm stable or it will run hot & go into thermal protection or if you had factory 2 ohm and installed 4 ohm you would of done nothing except wired up the amp losing overall power output
If it sounds as near as good as my 2008 S6 Bose it's more than good. Good price Jake and nice improvement, I bet is confusing having a reliable car hehe
a6 c6 bose system is insanely good it is even better than on the a8 of that generation the a8 you had to have the bang and olufsen to be comparable with the a6
The "Hifi" sound system in the E9X is actually not half bad, the base model sound system i haven't heard, but i'm guessing it's okay-ish and good enough for most people. I'm a bit of a sound nerd, at least when it comes to volume and clarity and i was lusting after one of these upgrades before i sold my car. There was a Harman Kardon system available, at least in the facelift 2009.5 cars and up, but i haven't heard that one either. In my E91 facelift 2009 330XD i had the "Hifi" system and i'm pretty sure that's exactly what's in this car. Good clarity, actually quite a lot of volume before distortion and "good enough" bass. I'm a bass hound, but the stock 8" subs actually do have a bit of grunt. I'm curious as to what this upgrade will do! There were levels of these upgrades too, there were whole systems with all new speakers and even a new amp, but they don't come cheap! Anyway, on with the show, i haven't watched past 3:22 yet.
I have e87 2009 LCI. The sound is very good for default sound system. Better than most standard car systems I've heard. I think I may have the hifi and HK speakers. I bought a 2006 stereo to replace and fix lcd fade but the sound was flat and no full bass. So I ended up just transferring the lcd. There must be some amplification on the stereo aswell even though they are both "cd73 bmw professional". Do you know why the stereos sound different from different years on the same model?
the default sound system of my e92 is trash. at least at higher volumes. without an amplifier the bass doesnt increase at some point when you increase the volume. also there are no tweeters. with a high volume the highs are lost and even some of the mids because the door speakers cant handle the bass and start to rattle crazy. i just bought coaxial speakers for the doors an hope that the mids and highs stay clear with higher volume

Uuuuugh Volvo and Honda were especially bad at this. Honda usually had the option of using a module to hijack the cd changer port to add an aux port, but a lot of the time it's time to break out the soldering iron.
Those look and sound so much better! Im South Africa our BMW base audio system is even worse- the under seat speakers are 6 inch so there really isn't much bass, in the 1st gen X1 no tweeters in the sails, and measly 3 inch in the doors.
I was wondering if you could help me with regards to my in car sound system. When I bought the car everything was great but recently something has changed and it’s lost it’s oomph so to speak I just don’t know why it doesn’t sound as good is there any way I can figure out why it doesn’t sound as good as it used too ?
Play a song, pan and fade to front left, then front right, then rear right, then rear left. Whichever corner sounds different is where your issue lies, potentially.
Can i cancel this Subwoofer? I have some problems with my AMP and it's when i set the bass level higher, i think one way would be to cancel this subwoofer. I don't need the subwoofer as i have one 1000w sub in the trunk
I would be curious what just a better amp would do for even just the stock speakers. When I built my second Saturn I started with replacing the head unit (and its integrated amp) with a Pioneer , and surprisingly it subjectively sounds like I got probably 80-90% of the improvement that I had gotten on the previous car, doing all four coaxial speakers to 4 way Pioneer plus a Pioneer head unit. (Never went for a sub because it wasn't that important to me to have more bass, it was expensive, and I feared more NVH because the Pioneers could rattle the trunk lid already...) No idea what I'd buy today given that Pioneer is (mostly?) out of car audio, but I no longer have an hour commute each way (work from home), my car has the Pioneer head unit, and the new Subaru has a reasonable sounding Harmon Kardon factory setup. Good enough to bring the kids to school.

$600 new is why most try to sell them, m they absolutely SUCK for the price and you can get a 10" p2, a box, 300w amp and wires for less and have chest rattling bass.
Im just gonna chime in and say they are not worth it. Yes they are a little more accurate and do have a bit more punch when you turn the bass to full, but in no means do they hit like a proper sub in a proper box with a proper amp, even for the same price! There is a much bigger difference going from BAV to a proper sub, compared to going from factory sub to bav..
I later on added the Bimmertech/Audiotec Fischer amplifier into my system which really made the subs come alive, but I agree, I would still like to put a 12 inch sealed corner box in the trunk to fill out the 70hz and below range and let the under-seat subs focus more on midbass. Being underseat *does* give them a little advantage in that they can act somewhat like bass transducers that let you feel the sound more than hear it, which "cheats" the physics of actually generating low tones a bit.
@100PercentJake I figured upgrading the Amp would help, which I plan on doing but they cost more than a 'really good amp'! I also agree these would be ok for mid bass, I have a JL 10W6 and a 500/1 for the more serious stuff

That's not the correct play for a DIY youtuber Jake, this was a bit of a... lazy swap? If the mids and the tweets are all that, why not go slow and steady on an IB install for that rear deck? Image Dynamics makes good IB subs, JL does too. Just a suggestion. With a proper RTA, a high end HU and an IB setup in the back you could rewind time back to 2008. Car audio products weren't the same, but used high end stuff was still out there and installers were going nuts.
There are no rear deck cutouts. The only speakers in this car are two tweeters in the front doors, two 4”s in the front doors, and another set of the same in the rear where the rear doors would be, and the underseat 8” subwoofers. If i wanted really pronounced sub bass a sealed 10” or 12” in a custom-fit box in the trunk is the way to go, but if nothing else these are better quality midbass. I think the amp would be the next thing to upgrade.
