...Sal Nistico's explosive tenor solos with Woody Herman in the mid-'60s helped make that edition of Herman's Herd into a success. Originally an altoist, Nistico switched to tenor in 1956 and played with RB bands for 3 years. He gigged with and made his recording debut in 1959-1960 with the Jazz Brothers, a band also including Chuck & Gap Mangione. But it was while with Herman in 1962-1965 that Nistico made history. In 1965, he spent 5mos. with Count Basie. He returned to Basie in 1967 and to Herman on several occasions (1968-1970, 1971, 1981-1982). Otherwise, tenorist freelanced throughout his career, playing with Don Ellis & Buddy Rich, but mostly working with pick-up groups. Nistico recorded for several labels as a leader including Riverside, Red, and Beehive.

    MUSICIANS WHO
    KNEW SAL REMINISCING:
** “I doubt we'll ever hear players like Sal again. EVER! Sal was a true spirit.”
** “Even though he was a gifted musician, he also was very humble.”
** “Sal Nistico was my hero. When I heard him with Woody in 1964, I knew I wanted to be a tenor sax player like Sal. I didn't know how, but I knew that's what I wanted. Thank God I got to meet him a couple of times and tell him how much he meant to me.”

After hearing Sal Nistico I don't understand how people can get excited by Coltrane or Michael Brecker. This guy doesn't have that wimpy, shrieky sound that most tenor players adopted after Coltrane. Tone has gone out the window for technique, and listen to this guys technique! And he has a great sound.

The most underrated and unheard of Tenor Sax player who ever graced the Earth bar none. He knocked me out at Al Hirt's Club on Bourbon Street in New Orleans Louisiana in 1961 or there about when I was one of the hottest Tenor Sax players of the time, because I could play Yakety Sax. I never did forget that night and never caught his name or heard of him. I discovered him a few years back here on RUclips. I couldn't believe it. Ain't this internet sumpton!

My 10M is 1941, and he can play it at least twice as fast as I can play my Mark VI! That's a metal Otto Link mpc.

Been playing tenor for 20+ years, I've heard his name, but wow man, this is the first time hearing him. He's an absolute beast on the horn, how the hell did I not hear him over the last 20 years?! He reminds me of Sonny Stitt when he's at 250 or higher bpm. What a legend. I mean, his articulation at that speed is mind-blowing and happens to be one of my favorite styles in faster playing. Again, wow.

One of the reasons Woody's albums of the 60's were among the best big band sides ever.

Sal Nestico: An amazingly under rated player.....clean, quick, great musical lines, relentless drive...

This should have a million views. Sal was so wonderful. He was a bebop monster and had insane technique. But, I really dig his ballads and melodic playing in styles like Bossa. He was always a wonderful storyteller. He had it all. His articulation on fast stuff is just ridiculous.
