Nobody has really picked up Eric Dolphy's mantle, even now, 60 years after his death. There's this beautiful internal logic to his playing that's uniquely his. I could listen to stuff like this all day.
We forget what a groundbreaking, technical bassist Mingus was. His playing is often overlooked for his compositions…..

Dolphy played with a soul that seemed to sense that the time was short and wanted to express as much as he could through a frail body that was overflowing with divine speech notes cascading like a waterfall of pure ecstasy!
Yes, apparently unknown to him at this time right here, two months before he passed, Eric had a very serious diabetic problem that was not diagnosed and that’s what killed him. Yes, the stupid German doctors didn’t help by assuming he was a drug addict and giving him other stuff, but his diabetes would’ve killed him eventually anyway…..
Thankfully I got to see Mingus and Dannie in NYC With Roland Kirk! A frightening experience that stays with me 50 years later....

There's a video of Eric telling Charles that he was going to go out on his own and form his own group. Charles, known to be quite oppressive at times, was busting his balls about his recent musings about leaving. Mingus was a great mentor to Eric and I'm sure he was really just trying to boost Eric's self confidence in the only way he knew how.
Mingus played with all the major influencers in this music, so it's such a treat to hear him with these musicians. Dolphy would have been the new template, and he was a true multi - instrumentalist. I love some of Byard's voicings - especially the thick crunchy chords. Richmond is a wonderful drummer with Mingus. All of the musicians here are examples of what needs to be seen now, more than ever.
Mingus n Dolphy are heavyweight in jazz and modern music beside other Giants , always be must named this great composers. Viva Jazz forever !!!! All against racism!!!!

I've yet to see Jaki Byard mentioned yet, so time to rectify that! He's a true unsung piano player. Such a tragic death: his murder remains unsolved.

Eric Dolphy had only about 10 weeks left, at this point. Such bad treatment he got at the Berlin hospital, where he went into a diabetic coma, only to be treated as a junkie by the staff!

In 1964 Mingus was at his apex. Awesome musician, performer, composer and - way less - organizer and producer of his own projects. An unstable, aggressive and suffering man ahead of his times. A genius.

Dannie Richmond is a great and underrated drummer, possibly because he spent most of his career with Mingus.

Hearing about what happened to Eric Dolphy is so sad. Every time I see him play, knowing what happened, it gives the song a sad undertone. He was a musical great the likes of which this world may never see again and he was stolen from us. I hope wherever he is he can look down and see the influence of his work continuing to change things for the better. He will always be missed.

underrated? he was and is considered on of the most relevant composers/arranger/conductor/band leader in whole jazz hystory... as well as Elington or Jelly Roll Morton... and a great bass player, too

I am still moved by "Meditation" after I first listened to it on a Mingus album I used to have (with the solid dark brown cover) back in the 1970s. I think this quintet is the best ensemble I have ever heard. God, do I love Eric Dolphy!

I fell in love with Eric Dolphy the first time I heard him. Ask Frank Zappa!
The contrast between Clifford Jordan's soulful and more conventional style vs Eric Dolphy's avant-garde harmonic explorations is a satisfying one. They somehow work in the context of Mingus' music.
Is this Frank Zappa being conceived? I've known about Dolphy for 35 years, and I'm still blown away at how he was just READY at all times.

So thankful to see Dolphy and Mingus together. Never thought that would happen. I will have to grayscale this for my own personal preference. Appreciate the effort but I'm okay knowing the world was black and white back then. The liberal elites don't want us knowing that but I'm on to them.
Also, check out The Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue from the Weasels Ripped My Flesh album by Frank Zappa & the Mothers of Invention. I read one reviewer say it was the most appropriate tribute to him he's heard.

Not really, not when you can refer to the original black and white to experience it that way. This concert happened in real life in color, and the colorization of the film is really quite good. Makes it seem like less distant (I agree with the above comment) and that is good, as these important American musicians might be remembered better and for longer as a result. @@Khayyam-vg9fw
@@jonaszepog1829 It was not in this artificial colour. Such a process is a distortion of a historical document, and while it might create the illusion of less distance it actually removes us further from the genuine event as recorded at the time.
If there is any sanity left in the world (yes, I know), then musicians of this calibre do not and will not require fake colour and other falsification to preserve their reputations.

Whenever I hear free-form jazz like this I think how it is the purest manifestation of freedom there is - a pure, unattached bliss.

@@beanstalk7893 , it is largely self explanatory - simply being less tied to conventions, like a regular tempo.
For me personally it is similar (though hardly identical) to the progressive rock era of the late sixties and early seventies mostly (though it still exists & probably always will) where pieces often either progressed from a definite initial structure before branching out into a much less defined extended jam session, then returned back into the original, more crystalized initial phase.
But that is only an analogy. But to get the general idea, that to me would be a good start. Jazz obviously predated rock, so some might find that comparison insulting, just as some jazz aficionados found Miles Davis’s foray into fusing jazz with rock distasteful; and some folk aficionados were shocked/depressed by Bob Dylan’s embrace of electric instruments.
In short, it is simply about greater freedom.

In 1964 I was living in N.Y. and I saw Danny Richmond walking down the street and I decided to follow him. His arms had a load in them and he stopped and stared at this store front for a few minutes. I was on the other side of the street so I didn't know what he was staring at. When he left I crossed the street to see what was there. It was a dry cleaner and the sign on the door said CLOSED.

Eric dolphy was the most overlooked genius in jazz history. A technically brilliant altoist, who in my opinion was the greatest on his instrument, don't get me wrong, bird was astonishing.he was an innovator on three instruments, and was the greatest flutist in jazz history, only James Spaulding comes close. His articulation on the bass clarinet is approached by no one. His gigs with the equally ill fated Booker little at the five spot are mind blowing to this day. His out to lunch session is one of the crowning jewels of the free jazz movement. He was only 36 when he passed, he left a void in jazz that was never filled.
