This is amazing that we can watch Coltrane and this band - these players - at anytime. Thank you for the effort to upload and share this - very much appreciated. The internet is a time machine-miracle sometimes ; )
Agree about the arco. Surprised there wasn't a pile of sawdust at his feet. But truthfully, these are all such great musicians, it's hard to seriously criticize any of them. Wynton Kelly, a great among greats, Red Garland, Kelly, and Bill Evans. Love Jimmy Cobb, especially live. And Paul Chambers, even with the buzz, his timing and phrasing, beautiful. And Coltrane. Where to start. Eye-opening to be able to watch those long fingers. Just a beautiful video. Thank you for making this available to us.
@@chrisnewton9622 I love Paul Chambers' playing generally, but for me his bowing has a kind of buzzing sound to it that I find annoying. I'm not a player either, but I do know that many other players don't usually have that sound. I think also that that is what the other commenter was referring to. As a non-player, I probably wouldn't have mentioned it if someone else hadn't brought it up first. If I'm out of line, I might delete that comment, as it is strictly an uneducated opinion. Thanks for asking me.
@@geertstuyven7390 I do remember Slam Stewart. I knew his sound from the old Charlie Parker recording, among the first jazz I ever heard. I saw him in the early 70's with Benny Goodman. I didn't know who he was until he soloed and then I recognized him instantly. No one else ever sounded like that. They did a lot of Goodman's hits but they also did Flat Foot Flujie (sp?). That was a fun night. I have a photo I tookd of them that shows Stewart clearly. Thanks for reminding me.
How wonderful and fascinating to hear Getz and Coltrane's contrasting styles together during this time period. Great lighting and camera work add to the allure.
Super, thanks! Wynn Kelly is rare on video and a fantastic stylist. Trane is at his very best on Dolphin. But even the unlikely encounter with Getz (Tweedledum and Tweedledee agreed to have a battle?) is enlightening. Trane tends to „imitate himself“ as Ellington noticed, while Getz keeps swinging all the time. What a beautiful rhythm section! I have wondered for a long time though, who told Chambers it was a good idea to play those arco chorusses?
Entendre Stan Getz , Coltrane et Oscar sur la même scène et les 3 improviser jouer sur du Monk , merveilleux !

I'm not a bass player, just curious what's wrong with the arco playing? Is it bad for the instrument or do you not like it stylistically?

Love it!
I’d like to know how much of Trane’s discography is on film? Watching how musicians inhabit the bandstand adds context to their genius.

Swinging like a garden gate!!!
It is as tho Wynton is not playing the piano. More like he is just watching his fingers perform magic....amazing magic.
