Hi Jazz listeners, have fun! 1. I Concentrate on You (Cole Porter) solo 0:00 2. Down Here on the Ground 4:26 (orgasm at 8:35) 3. Let's Fall in Love (Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler) 12:17 4. Polka Dots and Moonbeams 16:18 5. You Stepped out of a Dream 21:46
funny, because I also get goosebumps at that part around 8:35. Peterson also did that thing with his Hymn to Freedom in the most viewed video of it on youtube, which also give me goosebumps everytime i hear it.

Oscar Peterson is transcendental in a multitude of ways. He gets you high without drugs. High on life itself. God has a special place for people like him.
You can put his playing right up there with the World's virtuoso players. His hands weren't just some of the quickest in piano history, his mind was even quicker & his improvisations are induplicable to... 80-90% of the World's greatest jazz pianists?? He was a very special musician, rare for not just craftsmanship & pride in his work but also for his congeniality to fellow musicians. He really cared about all music, not just his own.
heres a link for the original video: www.dr.dk/bonanza/serie/592/jazz-i-sort-hvid/70053/oscar-petersons-trio-m-dexter-gordon---30101969 you might need a vpn set for denmark to access it since it from state licenced tv, there are 15 other videos you might enjoy.
And let's not forget the awesome bass player? Not mentioned in the credits, but almost certainly Sam Jones (Webster, Gillespie etc and of course Cannonball Adderley) who joined with Bobby Durham in the new trio (1966-70) following Ed Thipgen and Ray Brown. What a fabulous bass player he was. A lovely session altogether and so good to see two greats, Dexter and Oscar, working together with such swing.
I think both gentlemen were quite happy with each other. Especially Dexter was in a blowing mood. Right from the beginning of 'Polka Dots' he took some real harmonic risks and I really appreciate that.

Some of the comments are mind blowing. Some are pleasant and some of line with sublimated messages. There's no words to describe the genus of this music. I'm still learning from these wonderful souls .
To EP, the writer who wants to hear Peterson play slower, check out his album with Louis Armstrong. His playing is still beautiful but much more minimalist, totally in service to the soloist.
The first Dexter Gordon ballad here is >> Polkadots and Moonbeams / en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polka_Dots_and_Moonbeams Second is " You stepped out of a dream"
That opening is some wild shit! Sounds like he's doing his best art tatum impression. I guess I've been kept in the dark about Oscar's insane stride prowess.
Canada represents with its best (other than Nelson Symonds) and Dexter, no disrespect Montreal, takes all the marbles. This last solo is beyond belief. When you use the term, chops, it refers to what Dexter's got, not what Oscar's got, which is flash
The second tune is kind of best example of Oscar Petersons ars poerica. Not only he was the greatest player, but he also made the other members of the trio shine. Take the bassists: Ray Brown, here Sam Jones, later Dave Young and NHØP, and listen how the arrangements are set up like taylor made for them. Often different versions af the same tune over the decades illustrate this Take For example Reunion Blues. And the same true for drummers. Take Tin Tin Deo as an example, played by Ed Thipen, or Bobby Durham (the drummer in this record) and later Periods Lewis Nash. (Idont know if Martin Drew played it...) Sorry this comment getting too long ;-)
Now I started to plan a YT series about how a trio or any small group works. You have first to practice the groove nothing else. Young player often tend to listen ( and learn by ear) figures, motives scales. Yes this is the basics and useful not because you wanna imitate, thats never the goal. But you want to understand how the artists thinks. Having said that, I do listen the great artists with a different ear: how they feel together, whats the musical context, and how a composition is made up like one arch, having a beginning, top, then end. Again too long, sorry...
CBC production? Dexter was probably playing at the Town Tavern that week. We used to get a lot of shows like this when CBC was a power. I believe I see a young trombone player amongst the students in the audience.
I am inclined to agree with you after all. I can't recall any time when Dexter and Ben Webster were in Toronto at the same time and if the CBC had recorded it, I would surely have seen it. Thank you.
I keep hearing something that sounds like a kazoo bleeding into the music. I’m ignoring it as much as possible because the rest of the music is brilliant.
Dex will always be in my top favorites and I don't mean this in a bad way, but if you look at the DG video clips from '63-4 he still looks so young and has that sly DG smile which we all loved. But only 5 years later, here he looks like he had aged 20 years. What happened? Was it addiction or bad health?
+Mark Steinke I was with Dex we had just finished the album one flight up I xo wrote credits don't matter being a part - same with Lee Morgan others we misssad it was a mistake a lot of musicians make but can never diminish his talent and that mannerism

Oscar and Dexter TOGETHER is almost enough to make the universe implode!!
One million 'likes', man!
that is a mind blowing concept, an imploded universe.
YES!!!!

Hard to believe this performance is fifty plus years old. It has grown better with time. They will always be here with us through their music.

When the world is going completely mad, there's always the likes of Oscar Peterson and Dexter Gordon.
@Madeleine Byrne What I was going to say!
This was from The TV show, Jazz in Studio from Oct 30, 1969 in Copenhagen, Denmark. There's no recording of this you can purchase.

Hi Deian. I actually put his name in the credits ofcourse but he is unfortunately hidden untill you click "show more" :)

Sam Jones isn't just good. He's a sensational bassist.
If ya dig Sam Jones check out his album with NHOP - Double Bass
Nobody has more smoke in his ballad playing than DG.
Charles Thompson its like his saxophone is one big cigarette
Charles Thompson

I had the honor to personally meet Bobby Durham in a Jazz Club in Marostica in Italy. I remember we shook hands.

to the 28.... its going to be ok. man Dex makes a Selmer sound great !!!! there's zero negative here. all love
That first piano intro reminds me of Debussy. I think Oscar is brilliant but i wish he'd let his right hand move a bit slower. i think he did later
CBC production? Dexter was probably playing at the Town Tavern that week. We used to get a lot of shows like this when CBC was a power. I believe I see a young trombone player amongst the students in the audience.
