Danish tv actually made a doc about Dexter Gordon and Ben Webster`s stay in Cooenhagen, and the effect they had on Danish Jazz. It`s called.................you`ve guessed it..............." Cool Cats "..............and it`s great doc............😁
What is so amazing ,was the majority of films on these great Jazz artists were filmed all over Europe ,or anywhere else but here. It's, like Jazz was highly regarded there and they choose to go there with success in the late 50's into 60's.Then, they were shelved for decades until, Internet , U -toob,etc..Priceless ,great and amazing talents. The, 60's mindsets or conspiracy on Jazz may have been somewhat prevalent? We should have honored it much more...
America sucks and was never great at accepting radical forms of music.
"Jazz Scene USA" was great but very short-lived.

Dexter Gordon may be gone but his music is still alive and his spirit is all over the place. His music and spirit brings back the joyous sound of the gone by years. The respond fron the crowd is overwhelming with love and appreciation. When you come to think about it, you realise that today the jazz scene is much poor than what it was . The real artists have gone but they left so much music for us to remember as well as to celebrate them.
I bet the audience had no idea that they were witnessing one of the all time greats, and that those golden days of the saxophone player would never come again.
There was a time and they were all there. But now I can only listen to the music and miss them, but most of all I miss my friend Dexter, his wonderful playing, his humor and generossity.
Can't tell you how grateful I am that you posted this amazing concert! Dexter Gordon is one of the handful of the very greatest bebop musicians that ever walked this planet. Coltrane seemed to be the tenor that captured the imagination of the ones that followed but, for me, I'll take the exquisite technique, tonal control, harmonic sophistication, and great humor of Dexter's mind-blowing musicianship. Such a disgrace that this master was only secondarily embraced by his USA home after he spent most of his years in Denmark as his home base. Dexter Gordon's genius has never been matched, in my opinion. What an elegant gentleman. Thank you for this beautiful video.
As a sax player myself, i can NEVER hear enough of that gorgeous tenor sound that only Dexter had!
Nils-Henning was a national hero of Denmark - I saw his picture hanging in the Copenhagen streetcars

@@visitationaustin6494 actually Dex is more off the cuff Stitt lick fest. Stitt achieved his goal to be able to blow the roof off the joint anytime anywhere but at a price. Dex had a different goal somehow.

I had the privelege of meeting Dexter in Ronnie Scotts many years ago, 1980 something. He was an amiable and sociable campanion for a bit less than an hour. Shortly after that he won an Oscar for the film Round Midnight. He has always been one of my favourites. This download is fantastic. I saw him a few times but many years after. His style changed but his sound became possibly stronger.
Gordon was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance.

One of the the truly great jazz musicians, Dexter was always a joy to listen to. To borrow Miles' famous comment concerning another tenor master, Stan Getz: "Dexter would be cool just reading a newspaper" (in a raspy voice).

@@247hdjazz Why compare. I love them both, Charlie Parker is unique. Have several his CD's, have several Dexter's CD's and LP's as well. I was born and raised 30 miles south of Copenhagen (close to Koege) and heard Dexter in person several times live in Montmatre.

Great musicians
Im learning this art form, this language, which is about improvisation and phrasing. He seems to have an endless supply of ideas. He creates unique melodic phrases for what seems like every measure.
Thank you for uploading this precious video. This is Denmark's best Jazz combo in the 1960s. Dexter, Kenny Drew., Niels-Hennigs Orsted Pedersen, and 'Tootie' Health. It is interesting as the film captures his embouchure (lower lip), how much he took in the mouthpiece, jaw movement and his left-hand fingers, which he seemed to place lightly often only covering half of the keys (B, A, G on Tenor). Wonder if anyone has the information about his tenor sax setup (mouthpiece, reed, etc.)?
dexter played a conn lady face , in the late 60ties he switched to a selmer MK VI, mouthpiece Otto Link 8* with Rico nr 3 reeds.
Good old days for me (and many others) back in the 60's when music was MUSIC! CPH with These Cats, just GREAT! I'm and "old"norwegian (75yrs)

Dexter may be the greatest, but he's surrounded by great players here, no doubt. European jazz players don't get credit for their excellence.

I have to admit that I am mostly a rock man, but I like jazz too. Dexter Gordon was in fact my first experience with live jazz. In the Jazz House Montmartre in Copenhagen and almost at the same time as the concert here. It's hard to find a better jazz musician I think and I especially l like his ballads. There are 3 of them here and they are all breathtakingly beautiful. I almost forget that I am a rock man 😊
Dexter's Tangerine was the first jazz album I ever purchased, way back when I was in college in the 70s. Been in love with his playing ever since.
Out of 3'-"DEXTER" is one of "Greatest" -EVER !-when music was under'standable !

What music lesson you could once get in the summertime at Vallekilde Højskole ! Some of the worlds finest Jazz musicians were teachers !! I doubt if these arrangements still exist !!?? If not - it`s very sad

Me too, I grew up 30 miles south of Copenhagen, close to Koege, my friend and I would take the bus or train to Copenhagen to go to Montmatre. Later when I lived in Copenhagen I would go as well. Saw Dexter several times, and knew Niels Henning from a boarding school I went to at 16, he father was the head master.
Shit! I still DIG! this after all the years, since the 60's! Dam it's so groovy/swinging/Dancing and Singing MUSIC!

+Alex Hills Must be the greatest soloist from bebop forward - but sez me there's never been a better improviser, period - I doubt even Buddy Bolden could carry an idea forward this far - Dexter on the computer interweb is like a Bolden parade that never got back to town

As I have said before, "those were the days" in CPH early sixties, Montmartre, Dexter with GREAT musicians, like Kenny Drew, Niels Henning Ørsted Pedersen, Alex Riel or Al Heath, GREAT musical times, I was There.
It's an interesting setting and time of day for their performance; kind of an academic feel to the proceedings. I'll bet this was broadcast on Danish tv.
