Nick is and always will be the GOAT. I was fortunate to see one of his greatest gigs at the Ramada Inn in Schenectady with Eddie Daniels. Nick took the tempo of the Theme to the Flintstones so fast, that the only players left standing were Nick, Eddie and the bass player. PHENOMINAL!!!
March 21 1976 - I have a recording. Also June 1976
Alex Acuna on drums here…
I've watched this video many times but did the lady on the right mention The Tears? Wasn't Richard Pegue someone famous like Lou Courtney? Lou someone I'm sure. Those ladies are great. ❤
WOW!!!!!!!!!
She's doing great in every way- the sound, the groove- no histrionics either-
They gave the award to the wrong guy
11:44 Bill Chase un-chained
I'm sure glad Woody didn't have to dress-up in those Sears ponchos, like the rest of the band! Woody's the Best!
me gusta esa violencia del baritono
Great musicians
Im learning this art form, this language, which is about improvisation and phrasing. He seems to have an endless supply of ideas. He creates unique melodic phrases for what seems like every measure.
I have to admit that I am mostly a rock man, but I like jazz too. Dexter Gordon was in fact my first experience with live jazz. In the Jazz House Montmartre in Copenhagen and almost at the same time as the concert here. It's hard to find a better jazz musician I think and I especially l like his ballads. There are 3 of them here and they are all breathtakingly beautiful. I almost forget that I am a rock man 😊
His best period
LOve Woody! Thanks for this:)
Alex Acuna on drums
Now that is a real jam.
I don’t think that was Rufus Reid- maybe Avery Sharpe or Juni Booth…
ONE OF THE BEST BARITONE PLAYER .THANKS TO UPLOADING.
Impossible Pepper
That was a great performance! I graduated that year 1982 and I remember seeing this on the Grammy’s.😌🎶🎷🎤👍🏾
I've heard some great bari sax players like:Jerry Mulligan,Bruce Johnstone and Cecil Payne but, none had the incredible technique like Pepper Adams. He was voted DownBeat Readers' poll for best baritone saxophonist in the world in 82' unseating Jerry Mulligan who held that honor sincee 1953.
Poweeeeeer
I never even knew this happened. Sorry I didn't because I saw him play at a club in NJ the next year. He was very gracious to speak with.
Really I listened lot lot Music and compose and played myself...but this 2 really can let me with mouth open for energy, joy and bravura!! You are immortal!!!!!!!!! Thanx for this video I did not know they performed togheter!!!!!
Thank you for uploading this precious video. This is Denmark's best Jazz combo in the 1960s. Dexter, Kenny Drew., Niels-Hennigs Orsted Pedersen, and 'Tootie' Health. It is interesting as the film captures his embouchure (lower lip), how much he took in the mouthpiece, jaw movement and his left-hand fingers, which he seemed to place lightly often only covering half of the keys (B, A, G on Tenor). Wonder if anyone has the information about his tenor sax setup (mouthpiece, reed, etc.)?
dexter played a conn lady face , in the late 60ties he switched to a selmer MK VI, mouthpiece Otto Link 8* with Rico nr 3 reeds.
Its too bad the colour tape of this was wiped.
I bet the audience had no idea that they were witnessing one of the all time greats, and that those golden days of the saxophone player would never come again.
Does anybody know what microphone was used here to record Dexter Gordon? Great session!
Dexter could have made a fortune doing voice overs these days!
Alex acunia na bateria ?
Yes. The full personnel is described int he info box under 'Show More'.
I don't think that any Solo affects me like the Great BOBBY "Butter" BURGESS's passionate Trombone solo on "MacArthur Park" @26:06. Thank you for posting this. ruclips.net/video/nfEMRAsJrb0/видео.html
Brilliant.
What strange costumes, but great music.
They were considered "groovy" for this time period.
Woodie such a gem as were his bands, great mix of everything thanks so much for sharing, I've shared with many friends and always a thumbs up. 👍
Can’t for the life of me understand why everyone in the audience were not on their feet after this incredible performances by two of the late greats.
Because it's just a typical awards audiance, not really interested in artistry. They want to be seen, not really see or hear something.
Pepper has his feet planted firmly in the Bebop era and I'm not sure people in the audience understood it.
One of the the truly great jazz musicians, Dexter was always a joy to listen to. To borrow Miles' famous comment concerning another tenor master, Stan Getz: "Dexter would be cool just reading a newspaper" (in a raspy voice).
You have to remember that the USA 🇺🇸 has never fully acknowledged the problem of racism and bigotry towards 😢those people of color, particularly the Black Men of their own country...but it is an amazing place (music) to forget about the lunacy and create joy😊 and like John Coltrane once said: "Music is the Healing force of the Universe " and it is true 👍🏽
Awesome
Thanks for posting
Dexter sounds beatifully!!!
As a sax player myself, i can NEVER hear enough of that gorgeous tenor sound that only Dexter had!
00:55 4:25 , 17:10
Does anyone know the names of the players, besides Dex? Without the album covers, etc, I'm lost piano = George Cables. Harold Land??
J'écoute tous les jours Dexter ... en france le jazz pue l'intello... de le bouillie.. C'est dur...
Straight up Smokin...
Smooth playing sending out notes that caresses one's ears. Yep, I'm a fan.
There was a time and they were all there. But now I can only listen to the music and miss them, but most of all I miss my friend Dexter, his wonderful playing, his humor and generossity.
RIP - Ronnie Cuber
Can't tell you how grateful I am that you posted this amazing concert! Dexter Gordon is one of the handful of the very greatest bebop musicians that ever walked this planet. Coltrane seemed to be the tenor that captured the imagination of the ones that followed but, for me, I'll take the exquisite technique, tonal control, harmonic sophistication, and great humor of Dexter's mind-blowing musicianship. Such a disgrace that this master was only secondarily embraced by his USA home after he spent most of his years in Denmark as his home base. Dexter Gordon's genius has never been matched, in my opinion. What an elegant gentleman. Thank you for this beautiful video.
he passed away the year i graduated high school……
