  • Full concert (previously, only two tracks from this video were shared on RUclips). May 12, 1969, BBC TV Centre, London. Black-and-white, not great quality audio or video. The presenter and interviewer is Benny Green. Note errors in credits on personnel. I believe the correct personnel are: Woody Herman, clarinet, saxophones and bandleader. Jack Ranelli, drums; Bill Byrne, Bill Chase, Harry Hall, John Madrid and Richard Cooper, trumpets; Vince Prudente, Bobby Burgess, Bruce Fowler, trombones; Ronnie Cuber, baritone sax; Sal Nistico, Frank Vicari and Steve Lederer, tenor saxes; Michael Moore, electric bass; John Hicks, piano. The tunes are: 1) Blue Flame/Say A Little Prayer, 2) Light My Fire, 3) Woodchopper's Ball, 4) The Shadow of Your Smile, 5) Hard to Keep My Mind on You, 6) Keep on Keepin' On, 7) MacArthur Park, 8) Blue Flame/credits

Loved Woodie's bands, always keeping an eye in a forward direction and keep it going right to the end.

I had the privilege of speaking to him at The Palomino Club in 1983. He was very gracious as you would expect.

@@fatheadthedog No, Ronnie Cuber. Johnstone wasn't with Woody until the late 1970s, after his stint with Maynard Ferguson. See the personnel listing on the screen at the end of this video (though it lists the wrong bassist).

I don't think that any Solo affects me like the Great BOBBY "Butter" BURGESS's passionate Trombone solo on "MacArthur Park" @26:06. Thank you for posting this. ruclips.net/video/nfEMRAsJrb0/видео.html

amazing that john madrid didn't play lead. He would have played Chase's screaming solos an octave higher.

    • @chasefreak

Bill was the "seasoned" pro here LOL if you'll notice REALLY close, Johnny does indeed play a bunch of lead-Bill had come back to Woody's band to "learn" the new hip pop music for his own group (CHASE). Johnny is one of my all-time fav lead players-Bill got him on the same Schilke model trumpet as he played...Johnny followed the $$$$-he left Woody to join Buddy's band. I wish he was w the Chase group-THAT would have been something.

@@chasefreak There was a dj on KMPX in frisco named Bill Chase in 1976. He always brought his personal rarities with him to work to share with all the lucky listeners (as did all the other presenters). That was the greatest station I ever heard.
