  • On the fifth anniversary of the death of baritone saxophonist Nick Brignola, I post a Schenectady, NY, studio concert from winter 1996. Nick, who died at age 65 on Feb. 8, 2002, plays his "Hesitation Blues." Piano: Phil Markowitz; Bass: John Lockwood; Drums: Rick Montalbano. Nick, we miss you, but your music is eternal!

Nick Brignola is quickly becoming one of my favorite bari players.

I played with Nick on and off from 78 until he passed. There was nothing I've ever experienced like the energy standing next to him, listening to his endless melodic and swinging lines. He was also a killer blues player and was as funny as he was a burning player. For the saxophone players, he played them all with plastic reeds. He also killed on clarinet, his first axe and the only instrument that he used a wooden reed on. Nick was one of a kind who played every gig like it was his last.

Yes, Chuck. Saw you with Nick a bunch of times. Do you have any private recordings?

Nick was a pure and simple monster on the bari. When his album with Pepper Adams called "Baritone Madness" came out in the '80s I used to listen with earphones. Nick had perfect diction and control. He put Pepper in the shade on Donna Lee. Until hearing Joe Pass do it, Nick and Pepper ripped it at a truly unbelievable tempo. I almost melted my bari down for scrap.

Of course, He's my favorite Bari player, so he dies a bit too soon. He does have many recordings for us to enjoy. Pepper was my first favorite then Mulligan. Now there are many good players these days, but Brignola is still number one for me.

I agree, but not about the piano player.
It's called tension and release- he started off with a lot of tension to grab your attention, which it obviously did, and then released it to keep you interested.
Phil's no joke man, a living legend.
    Dig it.

I agree this guy is the best sax player ever. I came across him about 12 years ago when I was in high school playing bari myself.
Is it just me or is the sound really muted on this video? Is there another one with the full sound? Mine's playing really quiet compared to other vids.

I love Mike and Nick, but they're no where near comparable stylistically, technically, or musically.
But Nick is definitely my favorite bari player, and Mike is one of my favorite tenor players. Everyone is so different, Ya dig?
