LIVE JAZZ BY GREATS LIKE THIS IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN STUDIO RECORDINGS! Nobody else had quite the same cool, swinging sense Zoot had. Yet he could be lyrical, too, at the same time. He takes many musical risks when improvising but NEVER hits a bad note! This quartet really is about my favorite recording of him. Roger Kellaway is so underrated, Larry Bunker deservedly played with many of the greatest in jazz. Bassist Chuck Berghofer is - like all too many solid, talented jazz musicians - relatively unknown. Their collective of skills makes this a truly dynamic quartet!
WONDERFUL!!! Zoot is one my ALL TIME FAVORITES. I was fortunate to have seen and met him several times over the years, and he was kind enough to autograph several albums. SOOOO GREAT!!! Thanks for posting this awesome video!!
Yeah, if that is true it's amazing. I sat through 3 sets front row one night in the 70's watching him play. It was a jazz club in West LA or Century City, forgot the name of that club.
Absolutely amazing! These guys are like a machine, what a great band. And Zoot Sims is SO lyrical, everything is always fresh. Love this! Thank you for posting! (And BTW, I knew Zoot's brother Ray, a trombone player. Totally deserving of the same lime light zoot got. It must be a gene or something. Fantastic!)
Great times here! Love that most wore suits and ties to go hear jazz.... lots of smoke in that room too... back when you could still smoke in clubs. And of course the Great Zoot Sims. Played with the greats...Artie Shaw, Stan Kenton, Buddy Rich & one of Woody Herman's "Four Brothers". Brilhart Mouthpiece on Selmer cigar cutter, I think. Great post!
At 3:16 the man in the glasses with the sideburns is my father Loren Pickford. This footage was taken in 1970 just a few months before I was born. My dad was 25 years old at the time and he’s still alive today (2022) at age 77. He’s an amazing sax player and you can hear his playing and mine (bass player) if you go to my YT channel.
'Donte's on Lankershim' was my early intro to Live Jazz- went often on Friday & Sat Nites- 'Always a Kick! & The Owner was a helluva of a Nice guy who set the Ambience for the Club.. 'Great Memories of Donte's' ......
no one even talks about swing in the playing anymore ,it was a fundamental way of playing, music based on swing, the drummers and horns esp Zoot here have a lot more going on than the average be- bopper today.
i dont mean to be off topic but does someone know of a way to get back into an Instagram account?? I was dumb forgot the login password. I would appreciate any help you can give me!
@Louie Colton Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site on google and Im in the hacking process atm. Seems to take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Back when people actually listened to the music and didn't automatically applaud every time someone finished a solo. If someone did a really exciting solo people would applaud. But people were interested in what the next guy was going to play -and wanted to actually hear all of it.
Wow! First time checked him as a lead. Very distinctive sound from his horn. On so many of my albums as a sideman. Great band, what a show that must have been!
Here is the standard I'm talking about, "It's A Wonderful World" played by both Zoot and Al Cohn. As you'll hear it's the same exact chord changes as both Zoots Piece and Doxy. Ja-Da is probably an older tune but the chords are actually slightly different. Anyway, Zoot and Al play the crap out of "It's A Wonderful World", check it out!
Larry had chops for days. Glad this clip is here for us to see him. One of the great drummers in the L.A. scene. Shelly Manne, John Guerin, Chuck Flores too.
Not to mention an exceptional vibraphonist that is for Henry Mancini to say. I've read on an interview many years ago, that Larry stated, on a very humble tone - "As of this instrument, a know a little bit, more than enough to say that half of what Gary Burton does, it's impossible."
Larry's worked with Jimmy Rowles & so many Jazz greats... The owner of Donte's was So cool, down-home & Luv'd jazz... one of the last gigs I caught here at Donte's was Alan Broadbent working with the late Irene Kral, a fabulous singer working with a great pianist & I'm thinking either Putter Smith or Frank de la Rosa was on bass that evening
PARAMOUNT gate cop in "Sunset Blvd" was named Donte, as G.Swanson / N.Desmond calls him from her limo when entering the studio compound ...after all thOse yrs. . . OTIS RUSH rushes the "Motoring Along" as the closing shuffle on his excellent COLD DAY IN HELL lp on Delmark (1975). Anyways, this raw, yet tender footage has that certain doft a bygone era, captured unawares, where all true art stems from - entertained by abrupt suddennes, intertwined with temporality, enmeshed with chance - and buried by civility !
Hmm.. this does not even look like a MkVI to me. From both looks and sound (but that's largely Z himself of course :) ) I'd say it is some older selmer model. But which one?
+Conor Smith The microphone is also interesting for that matter. It looks like a Sony C 38b. There is also what appears to be an RCA ribbon out in front. They sound like they are out of phase.
Anyone notice drummer Larry Bunker"s expression while Zoot is in the middle of one of the great nights of his life?? It's like "sh--t' , i'm playing my ass off,....but am i keeping up???
Of all the great Tenor🎷 players there are and have been, IMO nobody ever topped Zoot’s🎷 Sound + Feeling. There is no way to improve upon this: “My Old Flame” 1970 PS: Zoot🎷 comes back in @12:50 after the piano🎹 to wrap it up. @6:28 ruclips.net/video/1o0Mt8SBYUs/видео.htmlm28s
Heard Zoot many times. Great musician, period !
We miss you Mr.Zoot Sims ♤ What a great Saxophone player 👽

Beautiful stuff, with Zoot being back by three superb accompanists: Just sit back and relish their outstanding musical talents.
My God what a great saxophone player!
I grew up in this club. I was fortunate to have seen some amazing players from a very young age. RIP Carey L
Lucky you are!
Love it! What jazz music should be!
You just made my evening perfect!!!!
WONDERFUL!!! Zoot is one my ALL TIME FAVORITES. I was fortunate to have seen and met him several times over the years, and he was kind enough to autograph several albums. SOOOO GREAT!!! Thanks for posting this awesome video!!
Strange that he doesn't make any top 50 saxophone player's list but he is my favorite, love his clean sound.
Zoot is one of your top favorites because you know better than the people who make those stupid lists!
Zoot should have been in the top 10
But he is.

Great gig
What a phenomenal saxophone player!
Roger Kellaway’s solo on that last blues= SMOKIN’ wow!! 🔥
The look of confusion on one of the customers during Roger's solo in the audience is priceless!
A mi gusto este es uno de los mejores grupos que integro el Gran*Zoot Sims con el en ese entonces muy joven e inmenso pianista Roger Kellaway...!
LOve Zoot!! Great video; thanks!
Awesome. A real master !

Hands down my favorite jazz club. I wasn't there for this gig but I went to Donte's all the time. It was the best jazz club imaginable.
Am sorry i missed donte's. I was always at shelly's.
Saw Lenny breau at donated once….about 5 people in audience…sad

Zoot! One of the "Four brothers."
SALUTE TO ALL OF THESE GREAT 👍🏽 MUSICIANS 🎵 🎼 🎶
Great band! People don't swing like this anymore.
no one even talks about swing in the playing anymore ,it was a fundamental way of playing, music based on swing, the drummers and horns esp Zoot here have a lot more going on than the average be- bopper today.
Yes people does.
Perfect punctuation... Great glimpse into a day passed by...
So good
What Perfection!
Chuck Berghofer bass. Played that “boots are made for walking” descending bass line.
It's so sweet how cool Zoot is when the bass player plays a few extra notes after the end of the last tune. @ 29:42

Zoot, fantastico, e tutti gli altri !!!!!
Yeah!!!!
Its really based on It's A Wonderful World, which Rollins also based Doxy on. Just thought I'd mention that. Thanks for the post!
smythe555 --Actually, Doxy is based on chords of "Ja-Da" as is "Zoot's Piece".

Great video, man, thanks!!!
Roger Kellaway was Bobby Darin's musical director at the time!
JUst great
Larry Bunker on drums! That's the great drummer that Bill Rvans chose to redord the amazing Trio '65 album!

Bop as good as it gets. Zoot, Bunker, Berghofer, Kellaway.
I know a Mark VI when I hear it.
Hmm.. this does not even look like a MkVI to me. From both looks and sound (but that's largely Z himself of course :) ) I'd say it is some older selmer model. But which one?
THE SEVENTY LOOK 👀 GOTTA LOVE ❤️ IT.

that sizzle cymbal the drummer uses is..... interesting......
