I was one of the lucky ones. I saw Herman on several occasions in London. Absolute magic.

The early sixties band was one of Woody's best. I was living and working in downtown Montreal in 1963 and walking home from work I passed a small club with no previous jazz pretensions but with to my amazement a sign saying Woody Herman here tonight. I grabbed a quick bite and headed back. I was not surprised to find a very small audience as there had been no prior publicity apart from that sign.
However that did not stop Woody and the band putting on a wonderful show. It was obvious they loved playing whatever the size of the audience. I saw Woody several time afterwards both in the States and in the UK but that first time was the best. I strongly recommend the Woody's Winners album recorded live at Basin Street West in 1965 if you wish to catch a glimpse of what a great band that was with some great soloists. Woody was always generous with the space he gave to them. I always liked Woody's singing. One of my favourites is Laura written for the film (also worth watching) with the Johnny Mercer lyrics added later.

I could listen to these boys jam forever. Discovering them when I was younger, boy what a crazy bunch of cats. Wish I could have heard them live.

The tempos kept getting faster and faster. This was the ultimate. After Jake Hanna & Chuck Andres left, the tempo came down a tad. Sal Nistico was the only cat who could make the changes at those insane tempos seem so smooth. With Bill Chase pushing the envelope to the max, he would later do the same in the early '70's with his own jazz/rock band CHASE. Woody would open his jacket, which was colored bright red inside, to show the audience, the ONLY thing louder than my jacket is THIS band.

Al, Glad to hear that the younger generation has picked up the Herd mantle and keeping the memory alive. I'm 90 this year and was friends a few years ago with a gentleman who was a trombone player with one of the herds. Great memories.
