- 9 Paul Fontaine Trumpet Solos with Woody Herman 1963 & 1964
Here are 9 of Trumpeter PAUL FONTAINE’s Solos (videos) with The Woody Herman Thundering Herd in 1963 & 1964, extracted from 5 TV Shows (“Jazz Casual”, BBC/TV, and Montreal/TV).
Paul is a great jazz player of Berklee/Boston descent, working for years with saxist Jimmy Mosher. He spent 6-7 years with Woody’s Band in the 60’s (‘58-60, ‘62-66), then with Buddy Rich, Greg Hopkins, The Mosher-Fontaine Jazz Orchestra, many others, and also numerous small jazz groups - continuing today, of course.
WOODY’S BAND in the ‘63-65 range was incredible (a jazz Who’s-Who across the board: Nat Pierce, Sal Nistico, Carmen Leggio, Nick Brignola, Joe Romano, Jake Hanna, Bill Chase, Paul Fontaine, Chuck “The Arm” Andrus, Phil Wilson, Gerry Lamy, Billy Hunt. . .on & on & on).
...For these TV Show videos, the Tpt section was:
BILLY HUNT, DANNY NOLAN, BILL CHASE, GERRY LAMY, PAUL FONTAINE
(except: Dave Gale in for Danny Nolan on Jazz Casual#1).
Enjoy this compilation - it’s My Tribute to the great Paul Fontaine!

Another story that PAUL FONTAINE emailed me about his buddy, SAL NISTICO:
“Sal was my best friend on Woody's band and I miss him all the time. We used to love to go to Italian restaurants wherever we would tour and he was a great person besides being a giant musician. He talked about his family all the time. He even had me over to his family's house in Syracuse for dinner and few times. His Mother was a wonderful cook. I, in turn, had him at my home for dinner as my Mother was also a wonderful cook.”
Funny story from PAUL FONTAINE, after I emailed him and asked him if he EVER looked at the music (other than one glance I saw him take in one of the After You’ve Gone cuts). His reply: “The reason that I, and others, didn't look down at the music was because we had played it so much it was memorized. One funny story about that: At a gig we were playing for the wives & families of the bands of Count Basie, Duke Ellington etc. at the Americana hotel on 7th Ave NYC, Woody had noticed at the beginning of the gig that the trumpet section didn't have the books on our stands. He thought about that for a minute, then called a tune we hadn't played in a long time which sent us scrambling to the box that contained the library. He then gave us his famous "goose egg' sign with a big smile on his face.”

Go, Paul, GO!
