Deism (Natural vs. Revealed Religion in the Enlightenment)

Deism was a religion that was popular with Enlightenment philosophes of the 18th century in Europe and America. In contrast to "revealed" religions, such as Christianity, which rely on divine revelation from religious prophets or sacred texts, Deism is a "natural" religion, relying only on what can be empirically observed in nature to construct one's belief system. In this short lecture, I contrast the revealed religion of Christianity vs. the natural religion of Deism.
This video is targeted mainly toward students taking AP US History and/or AP European History. Both courses require students to have a working knowledge of the foundations of Deist thought. I am aware that other videos out there may go more in depth and I'm okay with that.
I explain this to my parents and they look at me like I am from another planet.

Yes indeed! A lot of people think we originally came from another planet. Your parents may well be right! Don't worry about it ....
That was really clever how you turned toward the church or toward the forested area to better illustrate the differences between the two philosophies.
emlmm88 Thanks! It was kind of a spur of the moment idea. I was hoping to get into the church, but it was already locked for the day and I went with the format that I used. Glad it worked out!
YEs I agree.
Also, the specific beliefs of Deism vary a lot between individuals because it is based on observation and philosophy rather than divine revelation.
Exactly... nicely said.
yes, technically you can be an atheist physicalist with the Nature Religion Deism. or you could think that the deistic God IS Nature, or the physical, and be a physicalist. Seems like there would be a bit of panpsychism included in that one. Or you could have a more Eastern way of seeing it, that God is consciousness and all form is a product of consciousness, thus all things are from God and are God yet are not God - called nondualism. Or you could have a more classical way of seeing things, that there is a God in a Spirit Realm who made the Physical Universe and Life - called dualism.
Agreed. I'm a Christian Deist who believes in both the Supreme Intelligence _and_ the afterlife, but I know of other Deists who don't believe in any afterlife. There is no "holy book" of Deism, only variations of beliefs and the ranges to which they extend.
its the libertarian iteration of theism ;)
I used to be a Christian, but the more I live, the more I see Deism making sense so I guess I am a deist now.
I was a Christian too and I am a deist for couple of months now and i combine it too with some teachings from the Urantia Book (not a holy book)
Me to
Personally I don't believe in a god, but if I did, I would choose deism over anything else (that has a god)
Deism believes in God by nature.. Then they miss to see God in human being nature.. Having LOVE
THEN THEY THINK THAT, GOD DONT HAVE LOVE TO US.. NO EMOTION .. THAT THE GOD IS THE VERY CREATOR OF LOVE ....
YOUR FATHER LOVE YOU.. THATS NATURAL..
SO THERE IS GOD LOVING US
AND REDEEMED US ..
@@freazermendoza3487 There is different kinds of deisms. What is great about deism is that it is flexible and people can find their own truth about what God is. True religion is not about promises of paradises or emotional abuse by saying if you don't accept a certain deity you will burn in hell forever but it is about knowing God as a Father and other humans as equal and as brothers and sisters. All Abrahamic religions are based on fear and threatenings. Deists seek God through reason, free thought, and personal experience, rather than the common elements of theistic religions like a direct revelation, or tradition, or the church and prophets. I think you do not know exactly what Deism is. Besides that, there are deistic faiths that accept and follow Jesus' teachings. Jesus has nothing to do with Christianity or what Christianity made of him. Paul is the originator of Christianity he distorted Jesus' teachings and made a religion in his name. The Bible is a book full of contradictions, immoral teachings, outdated medicine, and rules, and the god of the old testament is eviler than the devil itself.
Damn this makes 100times more sense than any other religion I've heard of

Deism makes sense. It’s difficult for a human to maintain good morals, why make it more difficult by fabricating divine stories and revelations. Best form of worship is being good to others. Not fighting over who’s POV is right on a bible verse.
I agree. Basically this is one of the plenty of reasons why I choose to be a deist and left christianity. No hate though but I feel like this is what I am for a long time.
Finally stumbled across the term that directly reflects my outlook on life
I agree to most of the things in this vid except for "Deism being a religion" because that contradicts the definition of Deism itself. I think it's more of a world view/ perspective than a religion.
Or a belief ?
If it posits a god out there -- a watchmaker-kind of being that STANDS OUTSIDE OF NATURE (outside the principle of natural causality, beyond potentially being perceived empirically), then, yes. it's a religion. It's a religion that makes the maximum concession to Reason without taking the next and final logical step and saying, "All there is is nature; there is no supernatural thing at all; everything in actual existence is contained in this universe -- and thus POTENTIALLY perceivable."
My Deism is an opinion formed by observation and a complete lack of self-deception.
@@MrJm323 But deism isn't really a religion. It's just a personal viewpoint that there's an impersonal god. That's it.
And, besides. Religion is a lot more complicated than just mere beliefs in supernatural things.
@@americanliberal09 Deism is religion. It shares with religion its basic premise that there is something supernatural in existence -- something outside the natural order, something beyond rational conception (and therefore taken on faith).
As for complexity of belief and practice, there were deists ready to establish churches of deism (such as Elihu Palmer of the U.S., in the 1790s, etc.). They would have permitted the less intellectually sophisticated among them to pray to this deity (to invoke "providence", etc.).
I was a Muslim but I just thought about God Bible and all of these deeply for years and being a dietist makes ALOT more sense than another religion.
Wow we are In the same shoe. Prophets is only Jewish mythology
@@adib9191i mean the existence of the world itself is a miracle, maybe prophets are real , but what we know about them is not true , after all they were powerful enough to change nations at first of course before politics got involved

+Tom Richey Are you a deist?
finally I found what fits my thoughts of my self and what I believed in... Deism seems a perfect picture of my understanding, instead of Agnostic Theist.
Hello. I agree with you 190% but I wouldn't call deism a religion, but more of a philosophical position.
Deism is the only religion that works. Atheists deny the reality of supernatural things and Theists limit it to their own religion and writings.
Deism is peace of mind.
My argument against God was that the universe seemed so cruel and unjust. But how had I got this idea of just and unjust? A man does not call a line crooked unless he has some idea of a straight line. What was I comparing this universe with when I called it unjust?
C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity
Perry Jeselink What a great quote! Thanks for sharing that - and thanks for watching this video!
Perry Jeselink our own internal moral sensibility. If you follow the morality of the Bible you along with most other people will find themselves at great odds with their natural Moral instincts
if you're referring to the God of the Bible you'll see that He allows the world to be cruel and unjust for a time to prove a point to everybody that he is fit to rule mankind and not Satan. I don't know if this new knowledge will change your sentiments towards him because it still seems like an asshole move, but that's what the Bible says.
Benjamin Franklin a deist, "God helps them who help themselves."
I like the concepts of nature worshiping. I was taught God is a giver, so whoeber gives is a God. Nature gives us everything thus nature is a God. Sun, moon, sky, earth, water, trees, wind, fire everything is God. Everything has God in it, so we should respect and love everything rather than going to church/mosque/temples and offering prayers, we should be worshipping what is around us. By worshipping I don't mean to say performing rituals but do care for them.
When I heard about Deism, it was like my brain finally pieced itself together. A God or multiple gods that exist in the absence of religion! Makes so much more sense than any revelation or scripture (especially the abhrahamic ones).
Beautifully explained. God bless you.
This is how I see it, someone or something (being single or a race) indirectly created what we perceive as the known universe. It didn’t just happen without some form of intervention. What it was we will never know but my belief is that it was sentient and still exists but on a level that is not possible for the human mind to comprehend. We retained some of its qualities, such as emotions of love and happiness and reasoning, that is not present anywhere in nature. We don’t not need to be as smart as we are to survive; we could have progressed as a species without this level of consciousness and how humanity seems to be the only species to have evolved to this level of thought process is the reason I am not atheist. We don’t need love, happiness, or comfort to survive, even though they do assist with survival, they are not required. Why do we have these emotions? Why are we able to rationalize anything if all it’s doing is making life simple? We know how to survive; this is why I believe in a superior entity or race (non-ethically speaking for anyone easily triggered) that passed on their emotions and level of consciousness and placed us in a suitable environment that what fulfill our needs to survive. They do not intervene nor care unless unless the human race is an ongoing experiment or and abandoned one. Either way, the thought of divine intervention is counterproductive and the thought that humanity is superior to other beings on this planet, except for the basis of thought, is vain and ludicrous.
Absolutely stunning comparison! Thank you so much. Subscribed.
Very well said! I'm a deist and this is probably one of the best explanations ive come across.
Gentlemen like Benjamin Franklin, a Deist, made a great country. They made something different from the Christian monarchies of Europe by following the expanded view afforded by the enlightenment. Yet today it seems like the intolerance of the Puritans fleeing the lack of acceptance they experienced in England has somehow been resurrected. Is it possible that English economic inequality created the Puritans so long ago and now our environment is supplying fertile ground. Maybe today old Ben might spend more time in France, where he was adored as ‘Papa Franklin’. He might have had the greatest effect in securing French support in launching our nation. John Adams, a devoted Christian that accompanied Franklin in France, believed in the letters of the law and scripture, found it hard to influence people at home and abroad. Today he could benefit from today’s media that spouts political scripture that denies facts that enlightened scholars can not afford to contradict on expensive air time.
What I like about it is that it means anything could be possible. Which is more likely than a rigid set of rules from this world.
Dear Mr. Richey, thank you for your clear explanation….
The Son is the Sun... I love being a Deist.. its the only way that makes sense.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
You're welcome! Thank you for the great videos! Keep up the great work!
I have a quiz on this tomorrow so thanks so much for the great explanation!! :)
Love the metallic intro
I like the way you separate revealed from natural religion. However, religion was not intended to teach us what to think about the natural world. That is the realm of science. Science has discovered certain things that clarifies our understanding of the world around. When religion groups attempt to contradict what science has discovered through studies, research, and experimentation, conflicts will inevitably will ensue. People need to open their minds somewhat about what is necessary to go to heaven and what is not necessary. Is it necessary to contradict that our universe was created in longer than 6 days of 24 hours. No religion person will win that argument.
This is a quite educated man speaking here.

I was reading a Christian book about depression that stated that everyone that suffers from depression is a deist. That's what brought me here.
Below is an expanding and (roughly) chronological list of links to European history videos (generally these feature lecturers who summarize material well and deliver it in an engaging way, such as Tom Richey and Paul Sargent, or great animators featuring maps that illustrate the passage of events geographically). The units correspond to those of AP EURO (see link all the way at the end). A few videos on a 'Crown and Church estates' series from Marty Rady (of University College London) are sprinkled in, which feature the importance of Central Europe, an area that is generally not covered sufficiently in most introductory courses. While most of these materials are appropriate for AP Euro students, undergraduates, particularly those who want a refresher before taking more advanced courses, and life-long learners may also benefit from them. These materials compare quite favorably with 'massive open online courses' (MOOCs), and often are better, IMHO. Combined with a reading of some primary sources (many now easily available online in translation) and viewings of art from the eras covered (many great works can be viewed in high-resolution online), one can acquire a fairly good understanding of the last 500 years or so of European history in a relatively short period. Anything comparable would simply not have been possible for most people 20 years ago, and probably not even 10 years ago. Kudos to the content providers!

Well explained, Tom, thanks. To explain Belief/Religion/Revelation Versus Science/Irreligion/Reason-
Empiricism, I use the two sub-categories of Deism (impersonal, non-intervening God) and Theism (personal, intervening God) within the one of two containing, main categories that I designate as Supernatural; and the two sub-categories of Atheism (No God(s)) and Agnosticism (Do Not Know if God(s) or Not) within the other main category, Natural. Do you use this explanatory heuristic which I find useful?
*To explain Belief/Religion/Revelation Versus Science/Irreligion/Reason-Empiricism*
ummm...Dude. Irreligion is not synonymous with reason, and empiricism, because irreligion just means that you don't belong to any particular religion. However, an irreligious person can still subscribe to new-age mysticism.
*and the two sub-categories of Atheism (No God(s)) and Agnosticism (Do Not Know if God(s) or Not) within the other main category, Natural.*
Agnosticism is not really synonymous with naturalism, either, because there are plenty of agnostics who just happen to subscribe to mystical beliefs as well. So i'm guessing that you forget to realize that agnostics are not really a monolithic group that you wanna believe.
Good explanation 👍

we don't know if god interfere in humans life plan... we can only know this by thinking since we don't have a Strict religion to follow , we've known god by reason and nature only... and we will only find the answers to our questions from the reason and nature... philosophy plays a huge demanding role here
lets get back to your question here : if god gives us a plan to move on that means there is a purpose of creating us... but at the same time that means all the evil I'll face from this world is from the god which makes god evil and unjust ! which is impossible since these two aren't godly subjects
but i do believe that god (( MAY )) intervene in this world in some cases to help us ....
and i can't really think about how God can be just even when there is these man that are poor and unhappy there whole life and vice versa... i can only explain that with an after life , and here we understands from where this after life idea came from , it's only a way to explain the unjust and evil in this world and the religion creators adopted this idea... also there is this group of religions that explained it in another way like Hinduism and their Reincarnation...
Ahmed Thomas No. God sets things into motion and watches them play out. We all have our own purpose\plan. God just gives the reason to find it. Freemasonry is more of a cult. Deism is a religion.
Freemasonry is a 'secret society' fond of rituals, but most of them are probably deists. And Ahmed, I think most deists would answer that how or whether god interferes with our lives is precisely one of those questions no one on earth can answer.
As famous deist Voltaire said, "My reason tells me God exists. It also tells me I cannot know what God is, or what he thinks."
Or as a more recent wag put it, "Most people speak to God, but in an advisory capacity only."
deism.com has some good reading info overall.
deism isn't a religion. deism is anti religion but acknowledge an existence of a creator being. I believe God doesn't have any part in planning a person's life or interfering with anything in the world. God created the world and let it evolve on its own like an experiment to see what happens.

Kaylea Lynn Beavers That's a great honor! I'm glad my videos are helping you.

Very good explanation!!!❤
Hey Richey, could you make a video about Rousseau and the social contract?
I want to start reading the social contract but would like to learn something about it before. Thanks.
Andre Machado This is definitely something I plan to do sometime this semester. Right now, I'm about to cover the Reformation in my AP Euro class - probably will get to the Enlightenment sometime in November or December. I'd like to do a video each on Voltaire, Montesquieu, Diderot, and Rousseau.
Cool, thanks Richey.

Do you have any videos specifically on the enlightenment period?
Kaylea Lynn I've got this one and one on Enlightened Absolutism. I plan to add some more videos from the Enlightenment era later this fall.
I believe someone or some *THING* created the universe, but I don't believe any religions or their holy scriptures as told by man. Can someone help? What is my belief?
Believing in god but not in religion = deism...You are a deist!
@@gregheffley715 Thank you Greg!!
@@letsride3016 your welcome
@@gregheffley715 Nope. That's just "non-religious theism", because theism by itself was never really a religion, to begin with.
So, therefore, deism is the wrong label to use on someone who believes in god without religion, because deism proposes an impersonal god. That's it.

Can you make a video about Lutheran Reformation for Ap euro? Thanks!!
iReptarRawrs I've already got one: Martin Luther's Reformation (AP Euro Review) It's one of my older ones, but it does the trick!
Nice. I'm so glad that the enlightenment came along when it did.
Hi Mr. Richey, thank you for your work on these videos, they are helpful and useful in many respects. Couple of requests: 1) Could you do a video on the period from the beginning of the French Revolution (1789) to the defeat of Napolean (1814) and the historical timeline of events in between? 2) Could u do a video on the events leading to formation/unification of Germany, also dissolution of Prussia? Sorry for multiple requests, thank you and God Bless (yes, in the non-Deist, revealed sense). Anita
writeract2 Hey Anita! Good news! I have already started a series on the French Revolution: ruclips.net/video/Z2hWP3q5nXA/видео.html This is a work in progress and I plan to record segments 4 (Declaration of the Rights of Man) and 6 (Women in the French Revolution) over the holidays. Eventually, I plan to add segments on the Radicalization of the Revolution, the Reign of Terror, and Napoleon. As for German Unification, I already have slides made for the lecture (www.slideshare.net/tomrichey/german-unification-33921479) and have delivered it live and feel comfortable with it but I'll likely wait until January or February to record it because that's when I'll have more demand for it.
Mr. Richey, u are tooo good!! God Bless you!! Not sure why u want to wait for the German unification but i'm guessing has something to do w/ utube clicks/views of which i am not too up on. Thank u so very much, u don't know how much ur lectures/videos are appreciated and how much the process of learning is made enjoyable by ur entertaining but soundly knowledgeable voice. Also how enjoyable to spend time listening to a lecture w/ ur fun presence. Thank u very much again, will def keep watching (i've gotten thru ur AP euro playlist and am continuing on thru other lectures). I don't seem to get notifications so sorry for delay in response, i just notice it randomly.
Also, on another matter, i have been following a ministry in s.carolina called Refreshing Hope Ministries, they have just gone off on their own after being with Peace Be With U ministries. They are outstanding and the pastor is amazing with an amazing life story. They send out a daily blog/message which is absolutely outstanding, bible-based and full of God's spirit. You can go onto their website to subscribe or to check it out. Sorry to give you all this info here but you did not have another contact. Ironic that i am following 2 groups in s. carolina (I am in nyc), maybe something special over there. Only other connection I have with s. carolina is a friend's brother is/was? a professor at Clemson. Cheers, thank u so much again!!
Thank god I'm a Hindu.
Most logical, nature friendly and knowledgefull religion. And of course the oldest one.
Better thing is Hindus are not slaves of a radical book or a person
I'm sorry, but Hinduism was not the first religion, animism was. Also, you talk about not being slaves, yet you have a strict cast system that relegated huge groups of people to "untouchable"(see below human" based on the job they or their father had. Hinduism is not the shining star of morality you think it is.
Karma is usury
no judgement here brother. what is your opinion on gnosticism and neoplatonism. I claim no creed but seek whatever designing power there is behind nature
thanks tom
Nice video Tom, I just subbed to your channel.
1) Do desists believe God had/has a mind or knowledge, was it a willful creation by a Being or just an entity that created and unleashed energy, time, space, matter out of a random process/event.
2) I'm assuming deists don't believe in an eternal soul, correct?
Marco P Yeah, Deists would believe that God is a reasoning being who created lesser reasoning beings. As far as I know, Deists believe in an eternal soul and a place of future rewards and punishments - it's just not that defined.
Don't quote me on any of this, but I'm pretty sure what I'm telling you is true.
@@tomrichey Deism seems to merely be a doctrine regarding the impersonal or perhaps even amoral nature of god in particular. They could still entertain the idea that such a being created a heaven/hell along with a soul and judges us but this would probably come into conflict with the deity being much more distant.
Thank you!
+Aletheia Pop You're very welcome!
The Enlightenment (also known as the Age of Enlightenment or the Age of Reason; in French: le Siècle des Lumières, lit. '"the Century of Lights"'; and in German: Aufklärung, "Enlightenment") was an intellectual and philosophical movement that dominated the world of ideas in Europe during the 18th century, "The Century of Philosophy".
The Enlightenment included a range of ideas centered on reason as the primary source of authority and legitimacy, and came to advance ideals like liberty, progress, tolerance, fraternity, constitutional government and separation of church and state.
In France, the central doctrines of the Enlightenment philosophers were individual liberty and religious tolerance, in opposition to an absolute monarchy and the fixed dogmas of the Roman Catholic Church.
The Enlightenment was marked by an emphasis on the scientific method and reductionism, along with increased questioning of religious orthodoxy-an attitude captured by the phrase Sapere aude, "Dare to know".
French historians traditionally place the Enlightenment between 1715 (the year that Louis XIV died) and 1789 (the beginning of the French Revolution).
Some recent historians begin the period in the 1620s, with the start of the scientific revolution.
Les philosophes (French for "the philosophers") of the period widely circulated their ideas through meetings at scientific academies, Masonic lodges, literary salons, coffee houses and in printed books and pamphlets.
The ideas of the Enlightenment undermined the authority of the monarchy and the Church and paved the way for the political revolutions of the 18th and 19th centuries.
A variety of 19th-century movements, including liberalism and neo-classicism, trace their intellectual heritage back to the Enlightenment.
The Age of Enlightenment was preceded by and closely associated with the scientific revolution.
Earlier philosophers whose work influenced the Enlightenment included Bacon, Descartes, Locke, and Spinoza.
The major figures of the Enlightenment included Beccaria, Diderot, Hume, Kant, Montesquieu, Rousseau, Adam Smith, and Voltaire.
Some European rulers, including Catherine II of Russia, Joseph II of Austria and Frederick II of Prussia, tried to apply Enlightenment thought on religious and political tolerance, which became known as enlightened absolutism.
Benjamin Franklin visited Europe repeatedly and contributed actively to the scientific and political debates there and brought the newest ideas back to Philadelphia.
Thomas Jefferson closely followed European ideas and later incorporated some of the ideals of the Enlightenment into the Declaration of Independence (1776).
One of his peers, James Madison, incorporated these ideals into the United States Constitution during its framing in 1787.
The most influential publication of the Enlightenment was the Encyclopédie (Encyclopaedia).
Published between 1751 and 1772 in thirty-five volumes, it was compiled by Diderot, d'Alembert (until 1759) and a team of 150 scientists and philosophers.
It helped spread the ideas of the Enlightenment across Europe and beyond.
Other landmark publications were Voltaire's Dictionnaire philosophique (Philosophical Dictionary; 1764) and Letters on the English (1733); Rousseau's Discourse on Inequality (1754) and The Social Contract (1762); Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations (1776); and Montesquieu's The Spirit of the Laws (1748).
The ideas of the Enlightenment played a major role in inspiring the French Revolution, which began in 1789.
After the Revolution, the Enlightenment was followed by the intellectual movement known as Romanticism.
Thanks! I’ve always been an agnostic or deist. I grew up in a Christian area in the south and the religion never made sense to me.
I’ve had some stuff happen which makes me believe there could be something else out there. Not sure what it is but I do believe in some supernatural things
Luck. Good or bad its just luck.
The core of Deism is that the belief in God comes from our own reasoning, not from someone else's interpretation of any revelation. The core of Deism is freedom of religion. This means that you can believe in Deism and concepts of Christianity if they are in line with your own reasoning. I think it is also important to note, and an important premise of Deism that we should understand that all religious and/or spiritual beliefs are... beliefs. They are not facts, they don't require any scientific proof or any other form of proof. That means that your beliefs regarding religion or spirituality aren't any more significant, relevant, or "accurate" than my beliefs. So, don't impose your views on "evidence". Deism is NOT strictly about "evidence". Deism is about each individual using their own reasoning regarding their beliefs, particularly about things that have no supporting "evidence". For example, what happens to us after we die? None of us know. There is no evidence that is conclusive regarding any one set of beliefs over any other set of beliefs. Deism is NOT about evidence, it is about individual reasoning.
I like your explanation of deism which I consider myself to be. My only concern is I considered deism to further describe what any monotheist religion could be. Not necessarily a separate religion. Why can't a deist believe in Christ and God without all the hocus pocus?
good thanks
I combine deism within my Agnostic Atheism, if that makes any sense.
"Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God. "
Revelation 20:10 "And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night forever and ever."

There is no divine revelation because there is no divine intervention
We can create whatever is needed to satisfy one’s curiosity. Man must have answers for the thoughts that arrive from the duality of his mind. The more life unfolds the more truth be told or perceived from mans infinite understanding.
We all share in this experience we call life . We are all actors playing our part never knowing what the outcome will be.

So what i think is Deism is a personal religion based on personal enlightenment.
The master architect set the wheel in motion, the only revelations we can know are those revealed by nature. Even within science we can see his home within the unknown, and we should try to find him.

YES YES YES, this is what I believe!!!!!!!!!
Below is a test I believe the public school system should use in their Bible study classes. Your input is appreciated!
1. How many contradictory creation of man stories are there in Genesis?
2. Did the patriarch of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, Abraham, pimp his wife/half-sister?
3. Does the Bible god favor one group of people above all others?
4. How many "little children" did the bears kill that the Bible god sent because they teased Elisha about his bald head? Were the bears male or female?
5. According to the Bible, what is God's name?
6. Did the Bible god give orders to slaughter women and children?
7. Why did the Bible god in Exodus 11:10 (among other places), the blasphemous Passover horror story, "harden Pharaoh's heart, and he did not let the people of Israel go out of his land" and then in Exodus 12:29 the Bible god killed the first born of everyone, even of the animals, to punish Pharaoh for not doing what the Bible god allegedly made impossible for him to do?
8. When the Bible god wanted to kill Moses, what did Moses' wife throw at the Bible god's feet that made him change his mind?
9. Why does Joshua 10:12-14 say the Bible god made the sun stand still to allow the Jews more time to slaughter their neighbors when in reality the sun is stationary in relation to the earth?
10. Why is II Kings 19 almost identical with Isaiah 37 and why is II Chronicles 36:22 identical to Ezra 1:1 through most of 1:3?
11. Who said they did not come to bring peace, but a sword?
12. Was Jesus supposed to return to earth during the lifetime of some of his followers?
13. Who was critical of the Jews for not following their Biblical teachings to kill their disobedient children?
14. Who said their followers must hate their families?
Answers
1. 2. Genesis 1:25-27 and Genesis 2:5-7
2. Yes. Once when she was younger and once when she was in her 90's! Genesis 12:10-16 and Genesis 20:1-2 (Even though in both cases the men Sarah was handed over to did not know she was married, the Bible god was upset with them and not the pimp Abraham!)
3. Yes, the Jews. Deuteronomy 7:6
4. 42 The protestant versions of this Biblical nonsense and horror story say they were "she-bears" (2 Kings 2:23-24) but the Catholic version of the Bible simply says they were bears.
5. Jealous! Exodus 34:14
6. Yes, many times the Bible claims he ordered the Hebrews to slaughter women and children as in Numbers 31:7-18, 1 Samuel 15:2-3 among many other places!
7. No reason.
8. The fresh foreskin of the infant son. Exodus 4:24-26
9. Joshua 10:12-14 demonstrates the raw ignorance of the ancient Jews who wrote the Bible.
10. Bad editing! II Kings 19 II Chronicles 36:23
11. The Christian's king of peace, Jesus. Matthew 10:34
12. Yes. Of course, he's already about 2,000 years too late! Matthew 16:28
13. Jesus. Mark 7:9-10
14. Jesus. Luke 14:26
As most Deists can see, one of our greatest recruiting tools is the Bible! Just as we learn about God by applying our God-given reason on the designs/laws of Nature, so we learn the Bible and the "revealed" religions have NOTHING TO DO WITH NATURE'S GOD when we apply our God-given reason to them! Therefore, if people want to get closer to God, based on their own God-given reason, they can't do so by following the Bible or Christianity. Deism is grounded on reason and Nature and therefore leads us to a much better understanding of Nature's God! Please pass this test on to others who you think will benefit from it!
