What is Deism? (Deism vs. Christian Theism Explained)

  • In the 17th and 18th centuries, a philosophy known as Deism arose as skepticism clashed with traditional faith in our Western world. Deism was spawned by rationalistic approaches to spirituality by the likes of John Locke, Thomas Paine, and Voltaire. And the common assumption nowadays is that Deism simply was phased out in the modern era by other philosophies like Romanticism, Transcendentalism, Positivism, Existentialism, Humanism, Atheism, Materialism, and Postmodernism. But Deism hasn’t gone away-its spirit is still alive and well. And it just may be the case that most Americans who profess faith in God actually have more in common with Deism than they do with historic Christian theism.

    I'll say this, although I was raised in the Pentecostal "One God" Protestant church in the American South, as an adult man with a wife and kids, and the struggles that life brings I find comfort and sympathize with Deism.
    Of course, I'd probably never want my friends or family to hear me say that, but got to be intellectually honest with myself:)
    Great video and Peace..

      Thanks for sharing that. Maybe you’re not open to sharing, and if so that’s fine, but what is it about Deism that you find comforting? I would think the opposite is true. If God leaves creation to its own devices, what assurance could we have that evil is meaningful, is teleologically oriented, and will ultimately serve the best possible outcome in the end?

      Just seen this, thanks for asking and I'll be glad to share. I think it's strictly on a personal level with me and from what little I understand Deism.
      For me, it's more about the comfort of God putting things into motion and taking a hands off approach. Yes, the downsize is not believing in a "personal God" who hears and cares about his people and all that brings. However, the upsize for me at least, is I don't really feel like I need to be concerned and worried, about the "evil" that occurs. I don't have to make excuses for God, or blame God and/or the Devil about bad things when they occur.
      For instances, something I've never liked is being taught to be thankful giving God all the glory when something wonderful happens in life. Praising God for all the blessings he gives,etc, etc, etc..., But then, when something bad happens being taught not to curse God, not to blame God, because God has nothing to do with the bad, only the Devil; and sometimes it's neither God or Satan it's just life, etc... At the same time, being taught that God is all powerful, all knowing and Satan is defeated, for "we are more than conquerors...." The Devil can do nothing without God's permission and God won't put more on us than we're able to bear, etc, etc,....
      In the end, it gets so confusing, and my "personal relationship" with Jesus/God turns into one big constant struggle and my Mother, for example tells me "son, you think too much" :) (bless her heart) and then I'm like what? God didn't you give us our minds and analytical thought? HA!
      Hope you get where I'm coming from? To think, it's not God, it's not Satan, it's life and we have to deal with it the best we can, because God gave us this life and wants us to do our best with what we have, it makes the struggle easier and more bearable to me. I don't have to be concerned with wondering if I'm in good graces with God this week, will he bless me and on and on.
      I know this is probably elementary to a lot, but like I said the hands-off God is comforting in so many ways in my mind, but I do lose the "personal" God. It's all so confusing to me. Later...

      @@geico1975 What you are describing is an evidence based opinion, the universe as we observe it seems to be totally oblivious to our existence.
      I think that if anyone believes in any kind of "god" this is the only way to go.
      The problem is that the god is useless.

    The person who had the biggest influence on the 20th century was John Froelich. He invented the tractor in 1892, technically the 19th century, but the biggest impact wasn't felt until the 20th century when it freed millions of people from sustenance farming to pursue other interests. This directly led to the explosion of knowledge and technological advancement that we have experienced since then.

      Yeah the John Dear has been massively influential. Industrial revolution etc. Technology has changed our way of life in so many ways. And will in unprecedented ways with AI etc. But I still think ideology is more influential, hence in one way or another i’d agree more with Will Durant. Can you substantiate your claims and provide more arguments in lieu of how the tractor has led up to our modern way of life and its consequential world and life view? I think ideology and therefore theology (for Christians) is more fundamental.

    I've noticed that you have compared deism to "christian theism", because most of the time people will always associate theism with the abrahamic religions. But in reality, theism in general is not really synonymous with those abrahamic religions, because it just proposes a vague notion of god.

    • @josefmurban
      @josefmurban  4 месяца назад

      Right. E.g., ancient Near Eastern cultures were all theistic, albeit polytheistic. Enlightenment-induced rationalistic theism may be monotheistic, but it is not the God of Abrahamic provenance who speaks to His people and enters into personal and intimate covenant with them. There are many forms of theism, and Christianity has its own distinctive conception of God whereby it is set apart from all other conceptions of Him.
      And although deism is a form of theism and has its roots in Western Christianity, it is contradictory to the Christian view of God, not least of all because in biblical Christianity God is Trinity, He is both infinite and personal, He is providentially involved in the world, He sent Christ to die in propitiatory atonement for sin, the soul is immortal, and the future will experience a climactic telos which will usher in a new world characterized by radical discontinuities with the present fallen world when the Son of Man returns and raises the dead. All such things deism denies, but are essential to the Christian worldview. So deism is an aberration of Christian theism but should not be granted the honor of being called “Christian” at all. It has a vague, aloof, uninvolved and rather pathetic notion of a God who doesn’t care for or love His creation enough to be immanent and intimate with it.

    Jesus never knew he was dying for our sins. That whole theory wasn't even developed until decades after his death. Jesus thought he was preaching an apocalyptic message that God was going vanquish his enemies and form a new kingdom on earth. Thus, people ought to prepare for his coming by being more righteous. Jesus and his 12 disciples were to rule that earthly kingdom including its 12 tribal territories. He was not of the belief that people even had separate souls, that also was a concept developed by the Greek philosopher, Plato, much later and integrated into Christianity at least a dozen decades after Jesus died on the cross. People of today wouldn't know this history because its been all mixed together over the 20 centuries of endless editing and rewriting of all scriptures and the creation of confusing edicts changing whole belief systems as ordained by the Catholic Church.

    Roman 1:18-23 kjv
    18. For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
    19. Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
    20. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
    21. Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
    22. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
    23. And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

    Interesting term deistic evolutionists. They know there is a Creator but they don’t want to know about Him.

      Deist don’t want to know God? Who says? Deists believe in God that doesn’t intervene. That’s it. The rest is up to the individual’s interpretation.

      The Bible isn't precisely a good PR move and he should've released an edited version by now. If he had a RUclips channel - why doesn't he, btw? - he'd have to draft a few apology videos both for what he decreed/allowed/endorsed in the Bible and heinous atrocities since then.
      It's quite possible the creator isn't a he or she but an energy, a cloud, etc. Who's to say he's actually corporeal? No one knows which is why this video exists.
      Ultimately religious texts are written by man and the Bible was essentially broken telephone rather than an immediate documentation.
