Voltaire on Religion (Philosophical Dictionary / French Enlightenment)

- In the wake of the Paris attacks, with acts of violence being committed by misguided religious fanatics, it is as an appropriate time as will ever arise to discuss Voltaire's views regarding religion. As a Deist, Voltaire rejected all forms of revealed religion, practicing a religion derived from natural laws. The story that I tell in this video comes from Voltaire's Philosophical Dictionary, which featured Voltaire's enlightened perspectives on many subjects dealing with science and society. The story reinforces Voltaire's belief that religion is all about loving God and loving your neighbor as yourself. This is the Enlightenment.

Tom I take you as my savior
To my AP Euro grade
LOL
wonderful talk!
“Cherish those who seek the truth but beware of those who find it.”
― Voltaire
hahahahahhaha yesss😋😎😎
"Beware the knowers for they are afraid of what they do not know.."
If my translation from english is good, it's rather André Gide who said that ;-)
And beware of those who hate you for telling the truth.
Hello, fellow seeker.
Came here for ap euro review left with a life lesson.
Thanks so much for releasing this video. I was checking my feed before going to bed and was so excited to see this video because I have a test tomorrow on the Enlightenment and Eastern Absolutism.
Glad I can give you something to think about and prepare you for a test at the same time. Good luck tomorrow.
Thank you Tom. Rreligion is practiced by imperfect people as well as life. The Apostle Jacob says: "From whence come wars and fightings among you? Do they not come from your lusts that war in your members?" James 4:1 (KJ)
Wow. This was actually a very chilling episode especially considering our times today.
Thank you so much! I was kind of confused with Voltaire and you really helped me out! I think you seriously might get me a 4 or 5 on the exam:) Thanks!
Glad I can help!
We watch your videos all the time in my AP Euro Class, thanks so much
+sallyburger Sounds like your teacher is AWESOME!!!
I think that this was your best video-I left really thinking about religion for hours after I watched this-Voltaire was a pretty smart dude
+Nathan Limesand Wow... glad to hear this video had an impact!
'You do not arrest Voltaire'
I might disagree with Voltaire opinion on atheist but I'm will give up my Life for this right to say that...
+Sanjay Gond That's one of his great quotations, yeah. Just look at what the guy did to Rousseau, though, next to this beautiful thought. He kind of had problems with theory and practice melting :p
+Kleinermanns R. He never actually said that. It's a common misconception, it was actually Evelyn Beatrice Hall who wrote it as a summary of Voltaire's beliefs. Good quote nonetheless.
I love this. Thomas Jefferson would be proud.
I really enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work. Greetings from Mexico!
Thank you! A pleasure to have an audience south of the border! :D
Wow, excellent video. Thank you for making it.
Absolutely incredible and underrated video.
That was a very nice discussion you had there, thanks =D
Thank you!
Voltaire was an absolute legend! Long Live Deism! #DeistRevolution
Where can I buy that mug?
Very good and way to tie it into current events.
Thanks, David! Hope all is well in Idaho (if I have the right person in mind)!
Hey Richey is 'internationally confusing' a proper term I'm in an internet argument please help.
Also nice video.
I've never heard that exact term... Maybe I'm internationally confused now.
Below is an expanding and (roughly) chronological list of links to European history videos (generally these feature lecturers who summarize material well and deliver it in an engaging way, such as Tom Richey and Paul Sargent, or great animators featuring maps that illustrate the passage of events geographically). The units correspond to those of AP EURO (see link all the way at the end). A few videos on a 'Crown and Church estates' series from Marty Rady (of University College London) are sprinkled in, which feature the importance of Central Europe, an area that is generally not covered sufficiently in most introductory courses. While most of these materials are appropriate for AP Euro students, undergraduates, particularly those who want a refresher before taking more advanced courses, and life-long learners may also benefit from them. These materials compare quite favorably with 'massive open online courses' (MOOCs), and often are better, IMHO. Combined with a reading of some primary sources (many now easily available online in translation) and viewings of art from the eras covered (many great works can be viewed in high-resolution online), one can acquire a fairly good understanding of the last 500 years or so of European history in a relatively short period. Anything comparable would simply not have been possible for most people 20 years ago, and probably not even 10 years ago. Kudos to the content providers!

how can i make my voice that deep
Very helpful, thanks.
Hey Richey, can you make a video on sphere of influences?
As in Stalin's or someone else's? A little more specificity might help me here.
I would like to know how spheres of influences worked, like how much power a country had in it's sphere of influence. For example, how much power did Prussia have on northern german states? And great video, you always deliver top quality stuff, and for free! I wanna be like you when I grow up.
Found this video really interesting. Personally I'm a practicing Catholic and we have reasons for the sings we do (not going to go on about them here don't worry). Thanks for a great video
I am a practicing Christian, as well. Like you, I find Voltaire very interesting. Thanks for the comment!
Tom Richey Hello Tom I’m a questioning atheist who was once a former Christian. May I ask if you will take into consideration my question. Why are you still a Christian? You’ve learned of some of the greatest atheistic and deistic philosophers ever. So why do you still believe?
@@braydenshanley7435 Belief can exist outside of knowledge. Furthermore, he doesn't need to necessarily agree with the things he tells us about Voltaire. The man's a teacher, and his focus is on teaching, not converting.
@@apalsnerg For the individual Belief cant exist outside knowledge, it is lack of knowledge or that causes belief.
Really appreciate the video. So helpful.
+Bigriterridge23 Glad to hear this. It's a video I had contemplated recording for come time and when the attacks occurred, I thought it would be timely.
Thank you I think same Voltaire and you...
Nice talk, Mr Richey, but the story you told is in Voltaire's "Questions on the Encyclopedia" (Religion II) not in his "Philosophical Dictionary". Unless you have screwy translation that jumbled up the two? I have to wonder because you also gave the impression that the chapter "Religion" is the only chapter on religion in the Philosophical Dictionary, when in fact the whole book is PRIMARILY on religion! Most chapters on are things like Abraham, Angels, Baptism, Church Councils, Confession, David, Genesis, etc. etc!
Thank-you, sir!
i dont know to me the vertical relationship helps the horizontal. i would argue that with out some kind of vertical relationship all one has is a philosphy
You make a very sound argument! I am nothing more than an academic messenger - glad I kept your attention all the way through. :D
l really like you stuff i read candide in high school and ithought voltaire was a deist small d at best but now i will have to make that a Deist
That was great I just found your videos and I love them you have helped me do better in ap euro you explain things very
very...
great video mr richey !
That's a timely video !
That was my intent. Glad to have delivered, my friend.
Tom Richey
: )
Can you please do a video on the Russian Revolution?
At some point, this will happen but this would be a spring semester project at the earliest.
Yes please, thank you for replying
Thanks Tom!
I agree with Voltaire
My AP Euro grade would be so much worse without you lol, I wish our teacher would let us watch your videos in class to study.
Personally, I think that religion was the way ancient civilizations had to explain some facts that they were incapable of understanding. Then, it evolved into a useful tool for the powers that be in order to control their subjects. Nowadays, it has become hardly irrelevant in the West due to the fact that it has lost both the capability of answering tricky questions and the ability of controlling the citizenship. Finally, in order to spread love amongst people, there's no need of religion. In order to do so we must encourage actitudes such as empathy and respect. Anyway, despite some disagreement, I really like the work you're doing. Keep up the good work!!!
You never continued your WWI-WWII series !!! I would like to hear about The third reich and the rise of fascism as a result of the treaty of Versailles
Voltaire said that the Bible would soon be obsolete.. But after he died the place he died became a Bible church . . He never was a christian.. just cause he named God didn't mean a thing.. he obviously hated the holy Bible. People make a god in there mind .
Anybody else notice that the video length is 9:11
T. Ellis 9:12*
Voltaire the great
Great video
Thank you.
What a great Christian! One that didn't want to male enemies with the devil.
Voltaire should be translated to Arabic and introduced as obligatory reading in school. And not only there. He makes people think for themselves

Better than the last video.
And... HE’S BACK!

Have heard that Carl Jung was not an admirer of Voltaire. Now it is clear why. The “they” and “them” are he himself.
great vid tom!! rhea still ain't resubscribing tho :/
FALSE!
FALSE!
FALSE
Always nice to hear this man talk but i don't really agree:) A religion claims to be the truth about who created the universe and the true nature of everything. If we think that being is good or productive or not is irrelevant. According to religion that being alone decides whats right, wrong, good and evil and how things should be. A religion teaches that IT is science and in science our opinions means nothing.
The credibility though of any religious text is about as high as someone on the internet claiming Optimus Prime is real so whatever. But it feels so good to think that he is:)
That is only one way to look at religion. You have your way of seeing it, while Voltaire is suggesting another. At the end of the day, religion to every person means what they choose for it to mean.
+Tom Richey You know. I guess you're right. You can believe the texts are flawed interpretations of the word of God. Which for whatever reason doesn't have the opportunity, power or will to make sure that the truth is correctly represented, despite it being all-powerful. But then everything is up for grabs...and...that's....exactly...whats....happening. Yeah. Nevermind. I wouldn't use the word "choose" though. If the word of God is some kind of riddle that if you cant figure out, you might get tortured for eternity, i'd say you some serious studying to do.
Which 'word of God' are you talking about, wuuspigs? The Torah, the Qu'ran, the Vedas, the Bible, or the legends of Gilgamesh and the ancient Egyptian beliefs the Bible obviously borrowed from extensively? (Among other possibilities.) With their talking snakes, flying horses, elephant and crocodile gods? Sounds like you have a lot more serious studying to do before pontifying.
Are you religious yourself?
I'm not sure that I see the relevance, but yes, I believe in God and profess a religion.
+Tom Richey Oh, ok. I was just wondering.
Yeah, Voltaire had an edited Jesus! Just getting people to love each other a little more would be a sorry excuse for God to send His Son to endure what he did!

OMG DAN'S WALL IS GOALS! And that means you probably know Nicole and Layla. They're the best!
+Tom Richey max has told me a lot about you he says you are a pretty sus dude!
Sus = Suspiciously Swagalicious
Religion can't make us love all, because it does divide people into groups in the first place, to believers and infidels, those who are going to hell, and those who are going to heaven. The Criteria of whether we are good or bad, is believing, and not only doing good or bad ! which shouldn't be I THINK ! :p thanks for your videos sir, I'm a big fan ^^
I suppose that's where Voltaire's Deism comes in... It's a religion that excludes any divisive religious dogma.
Religion doesn't kill,idiots do
Well the Jews hated Jesus because he called himself God. Which is why they called him a blasphemer. He told the masses they didn't need to follow all the old Jewish laws. He was basically telling the Jews to get rid of most of your religious beliefs and follow me, equaling himself to YHWY.
Hmm....love to all is love to none.
Heretics changing scripture to serve their needs is a red flag. Luther did it, Voltaire apparently did it, and so did Thomas Jefferson. The final comment in the bible, is a warning not to change one word of scripture.

What I don't understand about those who believe in God is, taking humans out of the equation, some animals have to stalk their prey and then eat them alive just to survive. How could anything good have created that? Life is not All Things Bright and Beautiful

Voltaire died screaming that he saw the devil coming for him!
That's a ridiculous tale invented by the priests after he died, demonstrated false by everyone present - and that was a lot of people.
Gk Noy Yes there was a lot of people present & people, especially Frenchmen like to talk! But if as you say it was demonstrated to be false, then you will have no problem demonstrating it false here & prove beyond doubt that he did not say it. Otherwise the claim still stands.
Most sensible people would agree that the accounts of 9 or 10 people who either lived with him or stayed by him throughout the last week of his life are more credible than the tales of people who were not there, and never had been. Especially as the accounts of those who wrote about it ( his niece, his nephew (a priest ),an orphan Voltaire had taken in and her husband, D'Alembert, plus even another priest) were all pretty much the same. But clearly, that's not enough for you.
Gk Noy I sincerely hope mr Noy that you are not trying to suggest that I am not "sensible" person. Present at Voltaire's death was a priest who urged him to renounce satan, at this Voltaire replied "now, now, my good man, now is not the time to make new enemies." But before he drew his final breath he exclaimed that he could see satan coming for him. So it was from a witness that this became known, not as you suggest otherwise.
No, there were two priests present, as I said above, and neither one said or saw anything of the sort. But bigots had been reporting his death since 1761 (he died in '78), and this does sound like a quip he might have said to one of them.
