Hi Wade I make soy wax candles only as a hobby. From what I have read on various sites where people offer tips like yourself, I was under the impression you needed to add your fragrance oil at the lowest temperature possible before pouring in order not to dissipate the fragrance. So I have been adding my fragrance at 125F, stirring it well & then pouring my candle. Is this a big mistake??? I would so appreciate your imput. Really love your site & have learnt so much.

Hi Wade, I love your videos and watch them constantly. I’ve just branched into using wood wicks and I noticed after it solidified one of my candles moved to 1 side. I’ve asked in the face group why it happened and was told to use a wick holder. I noticed you didn’t use a wick holder. Here in Australia we don’t have wick holders for wood wicks. Can I ask in the absence of a wick holder how do I keep the wood wick from moving to 1 side. I know it was centred and I used a hot glue gun to stick the tab down. I’d greatly appreciate your advice. Thank you.🙏
Wade I heard using a heat gun like your isn't very reliable. Is that true? I have a similar gun and thought I may need to purchase a regular kitchen thermometer, your thoughts?
I appreciate everything you do to educate us. I want to start my own small candle making business. But I don't have the luxury to buy different waxes, wixs or dyes to test which on which work best with what. What is the best way to make sure I buy ingredients and tools that work well together to avoid wasting money and resources. Much love from south africa ❤️
I cannot get wooden wicks to work to save my life. I think its the wax I use, beeswax. Thank you for the great info! It will be very useful if/when I give in and go to soy.
Thanks for your video. I’m a new subscriber. I have tried wood wicks with 6006 wax Par/soy mix using cotton candy fragrance and fruity pebble. I was using a 16oz jar and the top of the jar was 3” wide . The company called the wood wick medium I also tried a large size. My candle did not burn well at all. 😞
Yah woodeicks lie others require a ton of testing. I don't really know what a medium size wood wick means so probably can't help too much. You may want to check woodenwickco guide on their website. They also not be able to tell you what that other company is referring to as their medium wick
I've seen people that use 2 wood wicks and a cotton wick between the 2 wood wicks. This seems easier and works just great. Not sure why you would sandwich the wick.
May I ask which wood wick company did you use Or you would recommend? I bought some wood wicks on Amazon but they don’t work too well since they are very thin. Thank you very much 🙏🏾
Hi Wade, my question is , if you are using Vybar, do you need to use IV inhibitor? For a new starter , I found it so expensive to buy all those things to make a better candle… on your next video could you kindly explain the importance of each …Thank you kindly
Vybar and Uv inhibitor are not related. Serve completely different purposes. So, no... not interchangeable and using one does not affect whether to use the other. That being said, both are completely optional
@@BlackTieBarn Thank you so much Mr. Wade for your early reply … I am beginning to learn little at time… I spend so much money for candles since my husband passed away 2 years ago… I alway lit a candle everyday & since I am retired might as well have something to do… thanks again..
Question Mr BLK TIE how did you make your recipe 🗃️ and your deciding the oz or weight for your oils with Wax? Is it algebra / geometry or just experience PERIOD?
Yes. Lol. All waxes have a max load they can handle. And suppliers will generally have a starting recommendation. U usually start around 8% Oil and adjust ad needed. Check out my recipes video.:)
Hi! New subscriber here! Thank you for a very informative, helpful and inspiring candle making video. I'm trying to get a lot of input re: candle making before I make my very first batch... I'm really excited and can't wait to test my candles soon! All the best! 😊👍
Great video! I didn't realize wax melts, I would've poured less but after watching your video I will have to do some tests on pouring a little more when I start and see where it shrinks. Thank you!
It doesn't need it. I mean.... for selecting wick choice etc...I try to keep variables the same as much as possible. But honestly.... this is 100% personal preference. There is no other reason for it. I actually do it less these days. :)
Hi Wade, as always I just love your videos. I’m thinking of using wood wicks bust I’m apprehensive to say the least. The jars you are using look similar to mine in size. Are they 77mm diameter measured from inside and 100mm high. I’d be very interested to know. Those are the dimensions of my jars. So I’m trying to learn the best wood wick for that size jar. Thank you so very much. You are the best.
@@BlackTieBarn Thank you Wade. I’m using Kerasoy 4130 and CB Advance by Ecosoya. I don’t know if you are familiar with CB Advance wax. However these waxes have nice smooth finish unlike 464. I noticed CB shrinks a little and can take up to 12% FO. I think you know about Kerasoy 4130 which takes up to 10% wax. Sue
I personally would never cut my wicks before the pour, but that's what keeps all of us independent candle makers. Or we would all be Yankee Candle, lol!
I used to not when I started. Quickly transitioned to this. As long as you know your fill line, this is SUPER easy. I hated trimming them after. Now, I only do this with woodeicks because they stand up. Cotton, I obviously don't trim until after.
Hey there!! Been watching for a couple weeks now and I love your content, thanks so much! I went to look for those wicks but they aren't listed on the wooden wick co site. Is there another that is comparable? Thx!!
Awesome! Thank you for the kind feedback. Regarding the wood wicks. Yeah, they changed their website a while back and its a bit cumbersome to use now. Not a huge fan. :/ But, I also think they may have changed the "Original Wick" to "Single Ply Wick". You may just reach out to them to confirm. I will see if I can find out as well. :)
This video was so helpful, thank you! And also thank you for wearing gloves and even a hat. I hardly see any candle makers use gloves and I think it’s weird, although I understand they could be washing/sanitizing off camera.
Clarus comes from a company called Clarus SP (Clarus Specialisty Products). They have several waxes. Send an email to bford@clarussp.com Tell him I said Hi! :)
I purchase mine straight from the source (Wooden Wick Co). Although, they are having supply chain issues right now like most suppliers are. :/ As of January 2021 anyway.
HI- can you share your conversion from liquid volume fill in a 9 oz tumbler - assuming you are filling to 8 oz - if you are doing 4 candles you need 24.3 oz wax to do 32 oz of liquid wax fill? are you accommodating for fragrance?
hi Holly. sorry for late reply. Among so many comments across all platforms, occasionally a couple are missed at first. But... I dont concern myself with converting from liquid to weight. I just start by filling a jar (to whatever fill level I want) and finding the net weight (difference between that filled jar and an empty jar. So, for example the jars you mentioned above are really about 10.5oz jars (by volume). But my fill by weight is about 9oz. Let's assume a 9% fragrance load. So 4 candles would look like this: 9 x 4 = 36 total oz 36 / 1.09 = ~33oz (this is the wax amount) 36 - 33 = 3oz ( this is the FO amount) *The 1.09 is the division of the FO percentrage. If you wanted to use 8% then it would be divided by 1.08 Or, if 10% it would be divided by 1.10
I hav run this video through several times to try to catch what you added after the wax melted and I cannot decipher what it is. Could you please tell me? Many thanks. Pamela
Wade, I am very new to the World of Candle Making. Get a lot of useful information out of your videos. Love your kitchen. Your kitchen bench top is amazing. I have a question: I purchased a wooden wick candle. It was burning wonderfully. I used it only a couple times. Each time I had it on about 2 hours. The wax definitely melted all the way to the side of the glass. However I cannot keep the wick burning anymore. It takes a long time to get it burning. Then it only keeps going for less than a minute and it goes out. I have majority of the candle un used. Any suggestions how can I fix this problem? Also like to know what causes this? Thanks for all your videos. Love them so much.
@@BlackTieBarn I just purchased this candle. Absolutely love the fragrance. Would you be able to cover this problem in one of your videos? How can I get this candle to work? Any solutions to this problem?
You have a lovely home, Wade! 😊 Could you tell me please what percentage of the fragrance you are using with wooden wicks and 6006? I’ve been testing them on and off only because I get lots of soot and can’t get them to work consistently, I’ve tried 8-10% FO load in coco apricot wax. Also, will you be able to demonstrate how they burn, especially at the lower half, mine, get so dark and the wick normally dies out somewhere half way through. Thank you for sharing!
Only a couple of my woodenwicks use 6006. But I use 9%. Not all FOs work well with 6006 and woodwicks. You are right... some burn great and others soot like crazy. Woodwicks and some waxes will drive you mad. Thst is why I carry less options in those.:) Yes, I plan on future wood wick candle videos as soon as I get caught up! 😉

@@BlackTieBarn thank you so much
Your explanations in your videos are so detailed. Truly appreciate it. Question: Have you ever used Nature Soy C3 Wax?
Ty so much!! I have and wasn't a huge fan. But it's been a while.
@@BlackTieBarn ok, thanks for replying.
Hello and thanks for the videos. Where do you purchase fragrance oils?
I purchase from several places. Check out one of my supplies videos. I have several listed there. :)
Thank you.🙏
Hey Susan. I think we chatted about this recently in another place. :)
@@BlackTieBarn thank you Wade! Yes we did. 😁
Wade I heard using a heat gun like your isn't very reliable. Is that true? I have a similar gun and thought I may need to purchase a regular kitchen thermometer, your thoughts?
Hi Wadw , what is the neme of that power you put before the FO? I didnt get the name , & what is it for ?
Uv inhibitor. It can help keep colors lasting longer l. Totally optional though
Hello from Greece! What is UV inhibitor?
Optional. Helps keep colors from fading as quickly due to UV light exposure
Are these a single ply wick?
For a 4 oz glass jar what size wick cotton and wood do you use? Thank you
What's diameter of the jar and what wax?
@@BlackTieBarn 2.75 inches wax is soy thanks
Great video and great kitchen!
Thank!
I'm looking to get started making and selling, what supply store do you recommend ?
I appreciate everything you do to educate us.
I want to start my own small candle making business. But I don't have the luxury to buy different waxes, wixs or dyes to test which on which work best with what. What is the best way to make sure I buy ingredients and tools that work well together to avoid wasting money and resources.
Much love from south africa ❤️
100% go with reputable candle supply companies. Avoid random Amazon purchases, etc!
@@BlackTieBarn Thank you
@@gorgeousbianca5340 You are welcome. :)
Hello, I was wondering do your wood wick candles crackle as they burn?
Thanks for your videos
Hi. Yep, sure do. But the amount of xrackly will vary by the oil being used. Sometimes it can vary significantly.
I cannot get wooden wicks to work to save my life. I think its the wax I use, beeswax. Thank you for the great info! It will be very useful if/when I give in and go to soy.
Hey Robin. Yeah, wood wicks can be finicky that is for sure. And, yes, beeswax is pretty rough to burn as a container wax. :/
Can I use wooden wicks in pillar/votive candles?
Never seen it myself to be honest.
I've seen people that use 2 wood wicks and a cotton wick between the 2 wood wicks. This seems easier and works just great. Not sure why you would sandwich the wick.
Agreed. Not sure why that would be done either. :)
Question Mr BLK TIE
how did you make your recipe 🗃️ and your deciding the oz or weight for your oils with Wax? Is it algebra / geometry or just experience PERIOD?
Yes. Lol.
All waxes have a max load they can handle. And suppliers will generally have a starting recommendation. U usually start around 8% Oil and adjust ad needed. Check out my recipes video.:)
Hi! New subscriber here! Thank you for a very informative, helpful and inspiring candle making video. I'm trying to get a lot of input re: candle making before I make my very first batch... I'm really excited and can't wait to test my candles soon! All the best! 😊👍
Awesome. Researching first.. love it!! Good luck to you. I hope my channel can help! :)
Great video! I didn't realize wax melts, I would've poured less but after watching your video I will have to do some tests on pouring a little more when I start and see where it shrinks. Thank you!
Absolutely!
what consistency are you referring to when adding the UV inhibitor? why would the wax need it if not dyed?
It doesn't need it. I mean.... for selecting wick choice etc...I try to keep variables the same as much as possible. But honestly.... this is 100% personal preference. There is no other reason for it. I actually do it less these days. :)
I might have missed it, but do you pre wax your wooden wicks? Or is this not needed?
I don't prewax them, once they are in the melted candle wax they are getting waxed. :)
Would you ever adjust the FO % if you didn’t feel the wicks were perfect during the initial testing?
Hi Wade, as always I just love your videos. I’m thinking of using wood wicks bust I’m apprehensive to say the least. The jars you are using look similar to mine in size. Are they 77mm diameter measured from inside and 100mm high. I’d be very interested to know. Those are the dimensions of my jars. So I’m trying to learn the best wood wick for that size jar. Thank you so very much. You are the best.
Hey Susan. What wax?
@@BlackTieBarn Thank you Wade. I’m using Kerasoy 4130 and CB Advance by Ecosoya. I don’t know if you are familiar with CB Advance wax. However these waxes have nice smooth finish unlike 464. I noticed CB shrinks a little and can take up to 12% FO. I think you know about Kerasoy 4130 which takes up to 10% wax. Sue
single layer wood wick? i’ve seen so many others using double layers… what’s the diff?
😁 thanks! And yes I try to always wear gloves! :) Thanks for being here Samantha!
Hi, new to candle making....what is Clarus 3022 wax and where do you get that from, never heard of that....thank you.
Clarus comes from a company called Clarus SP (Clarus Specialisty Products). They have several waxes. Send an email to bford@clarussp.com Tell him I said Hi! :)
What’s the best way to keep wood wicks from moving when the wax is pouring? I find mine will slightly slant
awesome video where are your wooden wicks from?
So 4 candles would look like this:
9 x 4 = 36 total oz
36 / 1.09 = ~33oz (this is the wax amount)
36 - 33 = 3oz ( this is the FO amount)
*The 1.09 is the division of the FO percentrage. If you wanted to use 8% then it would be divided by 1.08
Or, if 10% it would be divided by 1.10
I hav run this video through several times to try to catch what you added after the wax melted and I cannot decipher what it is. Could you please tell me? Many thanks. Pamela
UV inhibitor. Totally optional. :)
VERY common problem with woodwicks unfortunately. What wax type and wick size are you using
@@BlackTieBarn I just purchased this candle. Absolutely love the fragrance. Would you be able to cover this problem in one of your videos? How can I get this candle to work? Any solutions to this problem?
You have a lovely home, Wade! 😊
Could you tell me please what percentage of the fragrance you are using with wooden wicks and 6006? I’ve been testing them on and off only because I get lots of soot and can’t get them to work consistently, I’ve tried 8-10% FO load in coco apricot wax. Also, will you be able to demonstrate how they burn, especially at the lower half, mine, get so dark and the wick normally dies out somewhere half way through. Thank you for sharing!
Only a couple of my woodenwicks use 6006. But I use 9%. Not all FOs work well with 6006 and woodwicks. You are right... some burn great and others soot like crazy. Woodwicks and some waxes will drive you mad. Thst is why I carry less options in those.:)
Yes, I plan on future wood wick candle videos as soon as I get caught up! 😉
Your videos are the absolute best! Might I ask what percentages of F.O. you use for IGI6006?
Thank you very much. And of course! Take from 7% for super strong oils up to 9% for average or lighter ones. :)
@@BlackTieBarn thanks a bunch Wade! My launch is on Friday and I wouldn’t feel prepared had it not been for your videos! So again thank you!!
