- Most new candle makers are told to test their candles. But, how? Why? In this video, I will discuss the 5 factors I evaluate when testing my candles. AND, then how I go about actually making test candles, burn time tests, etc. Lastly, I debunk a few candle testing myths as well. Thanks for tuning in and for your support!

This is most definitely THE BEST and detailed video I have seen..and boy have I seen videos and read anything anywhere I could. Thank YOU!!! You have assured me in a couple of details that I was worrying about..you have no idea how relieved I am.
I can't wait to get back to work. THANK YOU!
Awesome. Thanks for the feedback Grace!
Great video, reinforces the fact that if you want to be a good creator it isn't going to happen overnight, like all good businesses it takes time and effort so for those in the same position as me (new to this) good luck, never give up and you will succeed
💯👍
This is the most detailed and best video I’ve come across about candle testing. Thanks Wade!
😊 Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
I agree, watching from PH
Wade, technical expertise is no question. What should be addressed is your delivery of that info. As a newbie sometimes I have to listen 2x, but I’m getting there. Your thoughts and concepts are so well done, even I can grasp most. So much thanks, so much respect. Thank you
Thank you so much. I appreciate that. Keep going!
The explanation on the melt pool was super helpful! Too often I get a nice melt pool at 3 hours, but then testing days later I get different results. Testing is absolutely the hardest and longest process. And yet the most critical. Thank you for the wonderful videos you make for us!! 💞
No problem Susan. And yes it is!
Yes it is! I feel like I’ve been testing forever!
I love how Wade's videos make me feel like a genius. The first year of candle making can be very stressful 😫. This video just explained so much. Im way to picky about my testing. I guess that is a good thing though. Thx Wade! Just keep making em, we'll keep watching 👀😎
🤣 Thanks Scott! Will do!
Your tips and tricks are so helpful. Thank you so much for this video. Your time and attention to detail are deeply appreciated. 👌
You are welcome! Thank you so much for the kind feedback. ☺
This is, by far, the best testing video out there. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!
You are welcome! Thanks for the kind feedback and support! 😊
Thank you, Wade! Very helpful and much more specific than others I’ve seen. Now I feel like I can test better knowing what I’m looking for!
No problem Linda. Thanks for watching!
Absolutely loved this video. I have been making candles for 6 years now and still am always looking for good testing advice and you nailed it with this video. I am in a group that always talks about how hot your jar should be or not be while it’s burning and I’ve been checking mine to see so it was good to hear your explanation as I have felt too that it’s going to get hot as there is a flame inside of a jar. I am going to watch your wick video next. Thanks Wade for all your helpful tips and tricks. Look forward to trying the twisting of the wick, as my htp 93 will sometimes curl down on me.
Definitely right up there as one of the best channels for any potential chandler to watch, great explanation and the right amount of detail. I was watching as you went through the numbers thinking safety safety safety and there, in at number 5 with a bang it came! Definitely in my top 3 channels for anyone that wants to learn the art of candle making whether for a business or a hobby, really good stuff, well done
Thank you very much for the kind feedback. Glad you find it helpful and I appreciate the comment!
Thanks so much! You are so succinct and clear for a beginner. Your suggestions are being taken to heart!❤
Thanks so much. 🤗
Thank you so much for the information! The mushrooming and the flickering was driving me crazy. Thank you for clearing that up and thank you for so much details!! Amazing video!!
No problem. Thanks Angela for the feedback!
He is so helpful and considerate, I love his videos
☺
Once again great content in your video. I'm slowly catching up with all your videos. Who knew that candle making was such a science? You did! I love it and look forward to when I start creating. I'm in the info gathering phase right now. Thank you for your time and commitment to all, especially us newbies. ❤
No problem A thanks Kat!
Thank you so much for this! I'm in the process of testing right now and this gave me a few extra things to think about! Thank you!
Awesome! You're welcome!
Thank you Wade for this wonderful video. This is what I really need the most right now. Love to watch more of your videos.
Awesome. Thanks!
I have been subscribed to your channel from the beginning. I just wanted to say THANK YOU for being the best You Tuber candlemaker/instructor. I started making candles just for fun about 5 years ago. I haven't made any for over a year because my life has become a train wreck. And I moved back in March and can't find any of my notes, so I'm basically starting from scratch with everything. I've been rewatching your videos and am so thankful that you share your knowledge with all of us. From one Thomas to another, thanks again!!!
AMAZING!!! Thank you for sharing this. I am new to candle making and this was so helpful. You are the best!!
No problem! Thanks so much Karen! :)
I've been feeling overwhelmed with testing and this helps so much. Thank you!!
You're welcome! :)
I am so excited you made this! I just decided last night to test this way and I questioned if I was over thinking things? And then today I see this video! like you I want to make sure I provide the best candle to my customers. So grateful I saw this!
🥰❤️
I'm rewatching this video. It makes more sense. Wade is so helpful
😊
I’am considering candle making as a hobby maybe to add to my business. I have been getting my info through books, internet and experienced candle makers. You are so awesome and knowledgeable! Thank you so much for your videos! They are truly awesome!👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Thanks so much Crystal. Happy to help
Fantastic video! Thank you!! It makes me feel good to hear that I am on the same track as someone with more experience. I feel like I’m doing it right 😄
Awesome! 😁
Thank you for this testing video. I'm just now starting out making candles and didn't know where to start for testing my candles . I'm a bit perfectionist as well and don't want to out anything out there. Your videos are so detailed and helpful. Thank you!
Great! Glad to help. And good luck to you!
Thank so much for making such detailed videos! So many of your videos has helped me.
No problem
You are my go to for videos on candle making. You are informative and detailed with out a lot of extra bla bla. I find a lot of other people who create candle making videos are new themselves and don't possess the knowledge and experience that you do. Thank you for sharing as this would be even more frustrating and trying with out your videos.
Thanks grace. I appreciate that. You actually bring up something that had been on my mind lately. I've been getting tons of requests for a video on my you tube channel. I've always been hesitant because well.... sharing numbers sometimes comes across odd. But also don't necessarily want to encourage the wrong idea ya know. I have a channel based off my business and not the other way around. I'm happy to share and I will just hope it is taken the right way. Because i agree I think there is a lot of fluff out there which doesn't help anyone. But also think it's important to focus on the business first, channel second. It's what worked for me as well. Thanks for being here!
Thank you so much as always you provide great information that really helps me.
You are welcome. Thank you for being here and your support!
The wick flickering is okay, thank youuuuu for sharing this information. I would have otherwise wasted so much time and resources to get this right. Thank you so so much. Love all your videos and they are very helpful and informative for a business in the process of testing ❤
You're welcome!
Ohhhh... Now I see! Doing two separate test burns with the best performing wick makes absolute sense. I usually just do an abusive burn and call it a day. Glad I've only limited my sales to friends and family at this point. Phew! Thanks, Wade! You're the best!
Thanks Kim! Glad you enjoyed! 😁
Thank you so much for the information. I was getting so frustrated with my melt pool in my candle. 😩 I am starting out and I have been testing, testing and retesting vessels, wicks, FO and wax. Thank you again for you amazing videos and information.
No problem Shonda! It can definitely get frustrating sometimes
It's so hard for me to sit and listen through a tutorial of significant length but I've learned it's gonna be worth it to hear what Wade has to say.. I'm like "Ok Wade said this may happen and when it does do this", and when I do, that's exactly what happens!! Lol.. Thanks, man! You have my trust...
😁 Thanks Dan. I appreciate the feedback. I know some videos get lengthy as I want to make sure I cover details and not just fluff.:) thanks so much for the support!
Great video. I just did my first testing this evening before launching my business and I would definitely keep the criteria of pass/fail in mind.
❤
Great content..on all your videos. Im new to this industry, so Ive been researching as much as I can. I love your videos, have learned a ton. Thank you, keep up the great work.
Wade!! You’re the BEST! This is beyond helpful. My process? Lol kind of, well it seemed good but it’s not after hearing this. I need to do more. I’m definitely going to change the way I’m testing, it’s not enough. It will push my opening date more but I have to feel confident in my product. Thank you ! Thank you! Thank you for sharing! I appreciate it so much!
Thanks Gina. And you are welcome. Glad to help! :)
Do shoe strings and yarn 🧶 burns efficient or good like yarn ??
Great teaching video. Much important detailed information. Excellent tips, tricks, professional expertise shared generously. Appreciate and wildly applaud your great work. Thank you so very much for all the time and effort you put in. Mucho Gracias.
Thank you so much!
Another GREAT knowledgeable video Wade!!
Thanks Poi!
Very, very good video on a confusing topic regarding candle making. Thank you so much for sharing!
No problem Michael!
Thank you so much for all the informative videos, my daughter and I are going to start making candles and all your videos have truly helped us with great information.
That's great! Good luck Ash!
And this is a proper explanation! Thank you!
Thank you. Glad to help! :)
I’m just about to test my first candle right now. Good timing with the upload lol thanks
Welcome! :) Good luck!
Thanks for sharing your tips! Very detailed in the technical aspect :)
Glad I found you on YT. New stubbie. The information has helped. I’ve only tested about five candles so far but this has helped me a little more.
Great! Thanks Angel!
Thanks so much for this video!!! I love all your videos
Thanks so much!
Thanks for this I am brand new to candle making not out of a kit and the process you have is so helpful I am so grateful. Thanks again for your insight and advice.
No problem Sue. Happy to help!
@@BlackTieBarn thanks so much 👍
Oh Wade, test, test, test, and test again.. It may be the death of me, but I'm gonna do it LOL! Thank you so much for breaking this down exactly how you do it, so helpful! I'm excited to get started!
Tracy!!! 😁🤣😅😆 No problem! :)
This video so informative. I'm pretty new at candle making and wasn't clear on what I'm testing for. At least I have a "how to" process that I can follow. Thank you so much. 👍
I also feel assured that some flickering isn't the end of the world. That used to worry me so much. Thanks again.
Np at all! I always try to improve my own getting processes as welll. Will share anytime I change something significant. Also, some flicker is DEFINITELY not end of the world. Lol
Thank you so much. Such amazing information!
Finally! A well-informed and scientific candlemaker! :) Thank you for all the explanations!! You're very generous with your knowledge. :)
Thanks Belinda! I try to help when I can. :)
Another helpful video, thank you so much
Welcome!
you are just a blessing and l thank God for making you. l have learned so much from your wisdom
Ty Jennifer.;)
I am testing my first candles and this video is great
Awesome! Good luck!
Thank you for the part on wick flickering!!! Mine flicker no matter jar, fragrance, fragrance %, wick type, and wick size. Makes me feel a lot better
👊 :)
this video was super helpful, thanks Wade😁
You're welcome! :)
Oh my goodness! Your candle kungfu is strong!! LOL! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with the masses!!! Your insight and experience is greatly appreciated!💖💖
😁😍 thank you!
Awesome, Awesome Information!
Thank You!!!
Of course! Thanks for the feedback! :)
Thank you for explaining the melt pool. I have had nothing but issues with too much flame dancing and a large flame, mushrooming and the glass gets quite hot after a few hours when past 50% mark. Ive tried several wick sizes and preferred the results of the smaller wicks but ruled them out due to them not hitting the common melt pool expectation. Il go back and look at smaller wicks...fingers crossed i can solve these issues!
Good luck! :)
Thanks for the video very helpful I found that with my wax 464 soy and my cd18-6 wicks are a great combination I test and have good ht and ct and there good in my 8oz and 10oz jars I do full day burns with no problems.
That's great!
this helps a bunch, especially since I'm wick testing a harder paraffin wax, which requires wicking up. definitely right about multiwick candles achieving a melt pool quicker than the standard one wick candle, I've got one going now and its got a mp in 3 hrs, tiny bit of wax residue, MP under 1/2 in deep, 3 lx 14...some may say oh that's perfect but I'm gonna try 3 lx 12. again thanks for the videos, I really enjoy them
Thanks so much for your feedback. Glad you enjoying them.
So helpful! Thank you!
Np!
Thanks Wade for this video. OMG testing is a pain. I have been testing for 6 months and just being to picky, but I'm getting no HT with the Jelly Jar so I'm switching jars. Thanks for your help
You're welcome. Yah, testing can be tedious for sure.
Wade.....what a GREAT VIDEO....LOVE IT.....LOVE ALL THE DETAIL.......☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆♡♡♡
Thanks Rosa!
If it wasn't for you, I would of given up on a candle business. Thank you Wade for all your knowledge
☺️
Awesome video! Thank you!
Thanks!
Pink candle in the thumbnail looks great!
Thanks Jared
Thank you for sharing your experience, it was helpfull. Greetings from Dominican Republic.
❤️
You have been such a great resource for all things candle making and have have definitely helped focus and narrow my process down in my own exploration. One question about variance testing - do you trim the wicks in between burns? I'm guessing a good combo mix would simulate 'reality'...
I have this store where they give a specific wick for a certain diameter/measurement of a jar... Good thing u uploaded while it's still on the cart... Guess i have to try every with wick they offer and see what best fits my standard
Yes definitely test. They give good starting points. Most suppliers do. But they are just that, places to start. Its impossible to have a specific wick that works because wax type makes the biggest difference. And fragrance as I discussed can make a difference too. Thanks for being here and your support. Good luck to you! 😁
You are amazing. Thank you so much!
Thank you. No problem!
Thank you so much . Your videos are helping me a lot.
I am planning to star making candles and I didn't know where to start. But with your help I am getting there. Also I am very nervous about the wicks I am not sure what yo get. I have no clue the difference.
Thank you so much.
Thanks so much Gaby. The main thing with wicks is.... knowing the wax your going to use first. And then your jar. Those two will decide your wicks mostly. Do you know what wax and jar yet? And have you seen my wick video. It's about a year and half old but I plan to an updated one as well at some point
I am so thankful for your content. I liked every video beacause I'd really pay for this information thank you!
Thanks Jonny! I really appreciate that!
Thank you for the tip on wick flickering!!! I definitely have been stressing myself out lol
👍❤
i would love to see a video with you live testing your candles.
I'll definitely add that to the list. I'll have to plan how that would work logistically but great idea.
Thank you for your video. It’s really useful to newbie like me. It’s good in your place you have a lot of choices of wicks. In my country, I can only find 2 kind of wicks which is ACS or CDN wicks. 😁
Thanks. Yeah thst is a bummer. I've use cdn but not ACS
Wow so glad you made this, there are not enough videos like this available. Thank you Wade for all the knowledge you share with us!
You are welcome! Thanks for being here Adrian! Feel free to share! 😁
Thankyou great advice
No problem!
Testing this week on candles my unscented was amazingly perfect. Pool lovely, burn slow and not over 2inches at highest point. My tin test was hot to touch but able to move from one room to next without scorching fingers. Maybe that’s normal. I didn’t mix fragrance very well into wax and boy did I learn that could be dangerous my glass jars reflected that the most. I counted 3 flames in jar with one wick for a moment ! 😅After watching different fragrance mixing and testing videos I feel my most recent batch will be better. So far cold throw is yummy but I can’t wait to burn, completed two different better mixed fragrance batches... wish me luck!
Good luck! And, yes.. being able to move a candle between rooms even though it's hot is great.
@@BlackTieBarn awesome, it certainly felt right! & Thanks, Working on my website building tonight! I am not a tech genius, I’m going to need all the luck I can get! 🍀
Really helpful insights as usual
I'm testing new wicks and waxes at the moment and having dramas trying to double wick large tapered jars tunnels are oblong. Hmm
Yah they can be tough. Oblong is normal for a while. If sized properly... will often catch up. But it's normal for sure. If jar is large enough you cN try 3 wicks if necessary as well but probably too much.
@@BlackTieBarn thx for that.. I'm in Aust and a lot of suppliers here rebrand the wicks with their own Initials and number according to burn diam as a guide (as well as selling cdn/htp)
I Just Love watching your candle teaching channel! I Know you are a candle maker as well, but you are simply amazing ! I have a question I have been testing the 10- oz apothecary Jars. The wax I am testing With Is 50/50 blend of Paraffin and soy. also C-3 Nature wax. okay I have tested 1 - wick only in each jar wick - Cd-20, Cd-22 a very nice burn almost a full pool with Cd-22. also tested 1- wick only Eco 12 - Eco 14 -, Eco, 16. Then I doubled wick Eco 2 - and Eco 4 no luck! Now this was Testing with the C 3 - Nature wax. My first attempt right now is the Paraffin soy blend and I have doubled wicked with L x 12, L x - 16, L x -18 and I have a feeling 2 out of 1 is over wicked lol ! but worth a try! My Diameter of this 10 - oz Apothecary is 3 5/8. I also Ordered zinc core wicks I have a great bundle of different sizes of these (Premier wicks) but I will try these as well with my Paraffin / Soy Wax blend. I also ordered every Htp - wicks that I could. Just asking if you can give me any advice on a couple of wicks I can test? Thank you so much!
This is the best video I’ve seen! Thank you for sharing!! How long after you make a candle do you start testing? I’m using 415 soy wax.
Depends on the wax. Anything but soy... 2-5 days. If mostly soy or all soy, week or so. I also get in the habit of every once in a while pulling a candle from stock that has been there for like a month + and testing again. I like to make sure it behaves the same as way as initial test showed even after sitting a while. :)
Thank you🙏🍀
Welcome! :)
Thank you as always very informative. I am new to candle making and love your videos. Quick question how do you go about testing your melts?
Nothing fancy just pop them in a warmer and try to Guage how many hours scent exists. ;)
Sorry, this may be a silly question but would it be ok to clean out the old wax and wick from the jars you use to re-use the same vessels for test candles? Thank you so much for sharing so much knowledge and experience, it’s really appreciated. Love your videos
Thank you Wade for your informative video as usual, I have two questions:
1- Regarding the mushrooming,, when you mentioned that if we had mushroom after approximately 7 hours this to be considered (ok), so my question is: did you meant here this a continuous 7 hours or it is 3 hours first burn and like 4 hours second burn??? I hope you get my point and I hope you can see my question in this old video
2- Regarding the power burn test during the vraiances burn test, what would be the rest time between each burn?
thank you in advance, I really apperciate your respond
Wade - I've been trying to wick an 8 oz amber jar candle with Problend600. It's Bonfire by The Flaming Candle Co. I used the HTP wick you used in the video where you taught how to make 6 oz jar candles in your kitchen. The flame burns super slow and a bit weak but burns consistently. I wicked up to a CD6. The flame doesn't soot, smoke, or dance but it's at least, an inch in height. What should I do? I'm a graduate student, trying to launch my website but keep encountering wick issues. Thank you for your time and always commenting or acknowledging everyone's post.
Have you ever used firefly wicks? I absolutely love them! He hand makes these in Florida I think. They work so well for me!! 😁
I have not. 🙂
Hi Wade! First, thanks for all your great videos! I've relied on them a lot & really appreciate your efforts. Also super excited to get my Premier wicks from you! One question about candle safety: do you measure the temperature of the outside of the jar with an IR thermometer or do you just use your hand. If a thermometer, can you give a maximum temperature I should aim to stay under? Thanks!
I do both. But ASTM standards recommended under 175 °F. I try to stay around under 160
Thank you so much! This is really helpful. I have been wicking to get that full melt pool on the first burn, and in my testing today a couple of my candles seemed overwicked at the half way mark...back to the drawing board! Can I ask how long you were in the testing phase for before you launched your business? I feel like it is going to take me forever LOL
Hey Tammy. I took my time 10 years ago. I didn't start selling or operating as a business unlike at least a year of making, testing, and learning. But... at that time there were no resources, youtube channels (shameless plug), online suppliers and help were limited, and so on. So it took longer back than as we literally had to figure everything out ourselves and it took a while. Fortunately, I had business knowledge so that part I was pretty comfortable with. These days, its easier to learn candle making but I do see a trend of people rushing the "business" part too quickly without taking the time to learn it. But that doesn't apply to everyone obviously. My advice...don't feel like you need to rush it. :)
Hello I absolutely love your videos and I am so grateful for your help. I notice you said you use different wax for your melts then you use for candles. Interesting never even considered it would matter. Can you please let us know what wax is used for wax melts.
Yes that is quite normal and common. Wqx melt waxes should be a bit firmer where container candles are usually softer. Try provlend 650, pillar of bliss, or c55
Thank you so much for your videos! They are so informative and make so much sense. I do have a couple of questions that I can't seem to find the answer to.... I use Soy/Coconut/Paraffin blend. How long do I let it cure before I can test? Also, once tested, if obvious no go, is it ok to dig out the wax, remelt and reuse it to test another wick in the same jar? Thanks again! You're the best! :)
I don't use that wax myself. But to be sage if test after 2 or 3 days and then again after 2 weeks to check for consistency. Yes you can reuse for testing purposes. And thank you. :)
Wade, love your videos coming all the way from Australia! I'm having such issues with my wood wicks. Very low flame, almost just simmering. Is this because the width of the wick and the compatibility of wax is not right? I'm using a Coco soy blend for a 3.5'' diameter vessel and my wick is 14mm. It's so stressful!! :) Keep the videos coming. I'm learning so much. Thanks.
Hi Tammy. Thanks! Woodwicks are finicky and don't work well in all waxes. So thst may be the reason. Sometimes it's the specifc FO. If you don't think it's wither one of those.... Keep experimenting with wicks sizes both thickness and width.
I appreciate your knowledge and detailed information to help us, beginners, I was wondering how many different fragrance scents you suggest to start off with When trying to start your business? I have a liking to ALOT of different smells.. As I keep hearing all scents are not compatible to all wicks!! I would greatly appreciate your feedback.
It truly depends. I would start with far less than I did. I also liked almost every scent, lol. I'd start with 8-12
I'm sorry if this was addressed, but I found your channel and it is so helpful! When you do the Variance Burn Schedule, how long do you want between burns? in the Proper Burn you said you wait 4-5 hours, but I didn't want to assume it was the same.
Yah for letting them cool in between there really isn't a set time because larger jars or deeper melt pools might need longer to cool. Certain waxes need longer too. So I wouldn't necessarily day they all need to be 4-5 hours. Just long enough to reharden
So I shared your video as I felt a lot of old and newcomers needed to see this. Well guess what, I got fact checked claiming it was partially false. Omg now these people are going to tell us how we make candles are false. Just thought I share
Lol. Its okay. People always like to argue and put other stuff down. It's nature of the world we live in. Not everyone agrees about everything. And we all do this differently. There are lots of ways to do things in candle making. Was just sharing how I do it. My right or wrong, just a preference. :)
Hi Wade, I've seen so many of.... actually I'm thinking all of your videos.....didn't you have one that you offered a candle testing chart. Thought it might be with this video. Thanking you
Here you go! :)
ruclips.net/video/EJrDeuo8IIo/видео.html
Your videos are always so informative and helpful! Thank you so much. Do you clean out and reuse your test jars or just toss them?
I'll reuse them for testing but not for sellable candles
@@BlackTieBarn Ah yes, that is what I meant. Reuse them for testing. Sorry I wasn't clear. 😄
No problem! :)
Thanks so much for the video, I’m just getting started and I’ve learned a lot from your channel. How long should the first burn be when you are talking about melt pools? Would this be the 3 hours that you talked about in the normal test?
Most candles should be burned 3-4 hours at at time.
Ugh i hate testing, but its gotta be done! Im actually testing premere wicks in my 8oz candlescience tins with 6006.
Yes... lol. It can be very frustrating at times! 😆
I love your videos, this was definitely helpful. I'm struggling with wick testing a lot, and I'm not sure if you mentioned this part and I missed it, but how long should it take for a full melt pool, based on container diameter?
Hi Maybelis, I didn't reay answer thus specifically because it depends on the wax. Some wax is soft and will get a more faster than one with a higher melt point. But it doesn't mean either is wicked right or wrong.
For example, melt pool between a soft spy wax or a soft problend 600 wax is quite different than a wax like 6006 which is more of a soft slush for the first few burns. If you get a consistent melt pool for the majority of the candle without it tunneling or getting too hot you are in good shape.
@@BlackTieBarn thank you so much. I'm using 6006 and been going crazy trying to wick some of my containers properly.
Excellent video - exactly what I was looking for on the testing process. Do you ever do fragrance tests? For example, you are aiming for a ‘woodsy’ or ‘outdoorsy’ type scent and buy two different but similar FO.
Oh yes. That's generally how I find ny keeper's. But it can get expensive so I definitely didn't start that way
@@BlackTieBarn revisiting this video as I am about to do my “round 1” test. When you say ‘full burn test’, what do you mean? Is this a 3-4 hour burn, or something different?
@@Brendaninc I most likely was referring to doing a full burn test... meaning. 3-5 hours at time and through the entire life of the candle. :)
