- What’s the best thing about having a trailerable boat so far? Working on it in OUR OWN YARD. Having access to all our tools, being able to make a mess in the boat and not worry about cleaning it up before dinner or going to bed, letting Renata run amok - it’s THE BEST.
We’re itching to launch, but have a laundry list of projects to complete. With a little babysitting help from Kirk’s parents, we’re able to knock off the to-do items, and get the boat ready to hit the water.
Hope you enjoy!

F27 owner / racer here, I know that all the 31's we race have a link bar between their rudder and outboard so that they steer together and stay apart - something I would defiantly recommend. Great work guys
Your obviously enraptured care and interaction with your daughter from before she was born is giving us all (who are grandparents, at least) the most precious gift imaginable. Tune in for boat stuff and stay for the blossoming of a beloved genius. Even accounting for favorable editing you all are pretty special.
You both Rock! Cardamom Balls DaDa? What Cardamom Balls???? Priceless!!!! Loved when she pointed inside for you to get yours!!!! Great boat work, can't wait to see the launch! From your GR Michigander!!!!
If you had reached in for one of those cardamom balls….you would have lost digits….lol! Too cute.
This was the best video. You guys are crazy funny. The part about the Cardamon Balls and your daughter was great. I fell out when she pointed to the kitchen for you to get your own. Absolutely priceless! Kids say, and do, the darnedest things.
Many years ago. while ordering breakfast at IHOP, my son asked my Granddaughter, who was around 3 or 4, if she wanted pancakes with strawberries and whipped cream? She looked at my son, with a serious look of questioning in her eyes, and answered, "What, are you on crack?" The waitress lost it, my son and his wife lost it, me and my wife busted out laughing, and even the couple sitting behind us were laughing. I am almost certain this was the funniest thing she ever said during her toddler years. I will never forget it. We all wondered, where in world did she hear that? We came to the conclusion we needed to do a better job of selecting appropriate TV when she was in the room. We were very careful after that.
Kirk, you need to figure how to put bump stops on the outboards steering connecting rod. The bump stops will limit how far the motor will be allowed to turn left, or right, before hitting the rudder. For a temporary fix, you could use 2 small stainless steel hose clamps. One clamp will limit the left turn max and the other will limit the right turn max. For a longer term fix, got to an outboard motor dealer that sells the brand of outboard motor you have and see if they sell such things, designed for your exact model engine.
So, we get on the water next week. Cool! See you next week guys.
All 3 of us, me, myself, and I.....
Renata is one smart little girl. I'm blown away with the big words she uses and pronounces.
Savor them while they last 😂
“Ghetto boatyard style” love it!
The consumption and negotiation of the Cardemom Balls was the best thing I will see all month! 🤗
The figurative laundry list! 😂😋😂
OMG, I can’t wait for Launch Day next episode, but thanks to the preview I am on the edge of me seat! Good luck!!!
🤗🤗🤗
Wait until you get a camper port with lights you can park your boat under!!!! Awesome vid. My wife and I enjoy watching your vids and dreaming of retirement sailing.
Stay positive, don't be negative...get in the flow and let the current take you to far away islands, stay safe guys
I think this is the happiest that I've seen y'all fixing a boat.
..... Laughing .... Lauren, we totally know that you are involved in getting the boat ready, loved the "I can see you are doing it wrong" section. Two brilliant minds are better than one ... bonus having a day off, bet it was almost like date night .. smilin .... love watching the progression in Renata's speech, your encouragement and interacting with her is totally paying off ... it was only a few times that I had to make use of Renata's subtitles ..... you may have guessed, I love watching how kids evolve and their personalities blossom .. just too cool .... thx for the share .. as always .. never stop dreaming, ust dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans ....
Thanks Peter, always love your comments!
Lol @ Lauren calling Kirk out on "literal", good to see you caught up on some sleep and back on your A game!
Awesome to of followed your journey from the beginning, now you two have an adorable child as well. Look forward to you sharing your future adventures. From the looks of it we live close, Presque Isle here...
Oh, I loved your recipe for the orange cardamom balls. On the second go around I made a few additions. I added a little vanilla extract, a pinch of Cayenne pepper, and some almond flour, to stiffen it up. More healthy recipes please.
After having my Oday 20 winter next to my house for 32 years we switched four years ago to a Oday 272 two hours away from the house. Now my little hatchback car is always filled with tools and I spend half my time running to the hardware store. Whatever I need it’s always at home. Enjoy the convenience of having your boat in your yard. It also gives you more time with your daughter and boat yards are not a great place for kids.
Renata is just so sweet. OMG! Well mom and dad are nice too.
10:12 need more of Lauren's dance moves❤
Savor them while they last 😂
With a mast that long, I would think you would need a higher, stronger wishbone (2 legged) shaped device in front of the mast step to raise the mast. It would not bend as easily. Also if you used your van and had a winch securely mounted on aft roof of van, and you cranking from there, you would have a better pulling angle. Just some thoughts especially if you are going to travel with this tri and will be raising the mast in remote places.
Happiness is running in for a mallet and a piece of wood. 😁
When you guys get into great lakes use you will doubtless be aware of the heavy presence of the large volume if the Ojibwe as they migrated west from the mouth of the st lawrence. "The People" as they are often called..several branches..Ojibwa, Chippewa. Etc. Living in Michigan you probably know all this. Fascinating early first nation's people in Canada and the n. Usa
Great stuff guys. I'm a tradey but love having "'er indoors" along... Because she's often got good, useful stuff to input, proved in our own house refurb..She's also (annoyingly) right a great deal of the time...the only thing more annoying is getting it wrong when she's not on the job with me...😂😂😂 Great movie, bless you, thank you xx🤗🤗
Thank you
Glad to sea you guy's "Back" great editing as usual, plus a !!RENAT!! bonus.
I can’t wait until you guy’s get out there and start doing videos every week. Rinata is just the cutest little girl and I just love watching her. Great job and good luck on the next journey.❤
good luck !!
Long time no see, the baby got big and very cute.
I share your connection of weather radio to sailing. I will sometimes turn it on down at the boat just for the sound rather than the information. There is just something about the cadence that I love. Looking forward to launch day!
Our first introduction to it was having it on loop for about three hours straight before we left in the middle of the night to cross Lake Michigan on the tail of a storm, ha! Unfortunately it's laced with some anxiety for me, but also adventure. -L
I just love the “no stress zone” the way you confront problems are no problems … just a chip off the to-do list. I miss hearing the “quacking”….do you miss that 1-horsepower battery motor for maybe an inflatable launch? - Keith Carey
Great video thank you! We had our Catalina 22 in the side yard of the house next to my cabinet shop and it was really great! The jobs come out better and take much less time. You also don't need to dedicate a whole day at a time working at the Boatyard to make it worth the drive. Can't wait to see the launch!
Yesss! multihull!
I'm so glad your back cuz I'm enjoying the heck outta watching you have fun
Woot woot!
@@SailingSoulianis I'm from Michigan Graduated from Owosso! And because of channels like yours I now live on a boat in Florida being waked up by dolphins and Manatee every single day.... Melbourne FL. So this is me a simple person that your channel made such a difference in. Thanks to all 3 of you's. Makes me happy to see all of you happy! 😎😍🤓⚠️🥹😍😍😍😍😍 So keep on pushing forward, your doing it right❣️
You seem so happy with the place you are in with your property & boat. So exciting for you guys!!
There are other sailing channels on RUclips, but this is the best one. There are other trailerable-trimarans in Michigan, but this is the best one.
The trailer winches with clutches are safer for taking the mast up and down. Lm makes them. It's great you will not have to hoist the big stich very often.
You have entertained me yet again. I salute you! ...Looking forward to seeing this puppy on the water! :)
I just got two 100 watt CIGS panels from BougeRV, and we’ve had then for about a week, and I’m really happy with them so far. I’m not afraid to break them while handling them, their power production seems really good, and impact from shading isn’t bad at all.
Looking forward to seeing the launch. -Larry
Wow that lil one is growing up so fast!!!! Seems like a few weeks ago you guys were telling us that she was in the oven.
Wow! You guys are so lucky🌞 This is the best positive-energy channel I know.
🙏
So cool having the boat right next to your house. Laughed so hard over the Cardemom Balls, so funny. Great solar panels, hope they give the power you need. Ooh nice doughnuts. Got to love Grandparents. Great vlog :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
You guys are delightful! Love watching you and I’m crazy about the solar panels!❤😂 ps your boat looks more like an airplane right now.
Sure enjoyed this weeks presentation.... Thanks, John and Penny... Ontario, Canada....
Cheers guys!
Sooo close. I'm really looking forward to the launch video.
Awwwwwe, she is talking so well!
Hi, definitely ghetto using a screwdriver as a chisel 😂
I warned we were doing it ghetto board-yard style!

More than on your way . Working in your own yard is so good ,course knowing where you stored your tools helps .
Which I never do even with the sailboat in my yard.

Wow! I just bought a 23’ folding trimaran. My challenges are to live with considerable less “conveniences”. I sold my last cruising trimaran 25 years ago to raise my family and now am revisiting the dream. Good to watch your journey with daughter. Wish I had done the same, but had three. Can’t wait for your next video.
I am impressed with your property. Now you can add homesteading to your channel.
I just binged watched your videos right from the beginning... Since you are the only fresh water sailors on RUclips... Plus we're almost neighbors.... I'm sure I'll see you in leelanau Frankfort Manistee or maybe even the little Islands on the east of the u p...?????
Yeppers! 😉
Really enjoying the journey you guys are on!
Last summer I threw out my outboard motor and upgraded my Catalina 25 to all electric. I live just across the pond in WI, so if you would like any help or just someone to talk through the process with send me a message. One thing I would suggest is even for your temporary electric setup before going electric propulsion get 24V batteries. Almost every electric option big enough for your boat is going to run on 48V. What I found out is that a 100AH 12V battery takes up almost the exact same space as a 100AH 24V battery, so in order to make a 48V bank and not take up the whole bilge of your boat you want the individual batteries to be higher voltage.
Are you able to charge 24V bank via 18V solar panels? I guess they could wire panel pairs in series. I have 2 18V panels wired in series to a gridtie microinverter and they work fine.
@@artsmith103 Good question, it's one of the problems I had to solve. Most MPPT charge controllers step down voltage, but Sunforge actually makes a MPPT charge controller that steps up voltage. So I have two 24V panels that I wired in parallel (to reduce shading effects) that gets stepped up to charge my 48V bank.
Wot a lovely boss baby
So glad to see you....
you guys warm my heart!☺
So excitong! cant wait for net video!
I always love your video's. It was great to see your daughter growing so fast, she might become a next generation sailor.
I always enjoy you working on your boat projects. I hope this boat is everything you expected it would be. I think it is great that you are now close to home and your Great Lakes sailing adventures should be epic.
We're stoked 😬
Forgot the !A! in RENATAAAAA.
Catching up on the last few videos of y'all getting the new boat and seeing Renata grow in every video made me curious to see when I started following your journey and what video started it. It looks like the first video I watched was Episode 24 - running aground in 8' of water, amongst a few "boat fails" (lol). I watched it in April 2019 and have been around ever since (sometimes a few videos behind, but I always catch back up). All that to say thank you for bringing us along on your adventures! So much has changed in all of our lives in the past 4 years and I always feel a sense of calm when I hear that classic Soulianis outro music.
Thanks for your comment, Brett, glad to have you along for the long haul!
None for Dada. You're S.O.L.-ianis, Dada. Too cute. 😀

Great video, oh the suspense is killing, cant wait for more. Sending best wishes😊
Thanks for watching!
How exciting!
Fun episode... glad you're back!
Another great episode, enjoyed it...
Glad you enjoyed it Mark!
What an amazing journey you have shared!!!
Great video as always..stay safe 🙂
I don’t understand a lot of what you explained about your boat. However it was all worth while to hear how clearly Renata speaks. She has changed so much. I just love seeing how things are going.
A HaPpY wife is a Happy Life.. just accept the wife is always right. 🤪😁🤗
Fun video you two. Sending you all Love.
I like the Macgregger twin rudder system that seems as if it would be harder to strike with propellors.
That Macgregor isn't much of a sailboat. The oversized outboard is center mounted so it can be a power boat. Then twin rudders are installed outside the motor. There are real sailboats with twin rudders to compliment shoal draft design. Benetau and others makes them. I think the folding tri is too narrow in stern for twin rudders.
You might think no one caught the applause sound effect at 13:30......but you'd be wrong.
Fairing compound/filler in a pinch? Flour or instant pancake mix. (Stuff that has no expiration date really isn't food, it's epoxy filler). Used it many times over many years (I've got the whole range of West, but the one I want is usually MIA when I need it.) Doesn't sand as easily as fairing compound but it's impervious to water, bugs, bacteria and fungus.
Great that you're close to launching.
What part of Michigan are y’all from? I’m originally from the Traverse City area but live in Beaufort NC now
👍🏼👍🏼
I am sure you know this, but you didn't mention it. You don't want a lead acid flooded battery solar controller charging those lithium batteries.
Did soulianis actually sink at the dock during the recent hurricane?
No, miraculously she was one of the few boats in the marina still floating. She was extremely banged up though. We’re still trying to get information from the new owner about what is happening with her.
Ah yes, nothing like some pre launch preparation. A list which always has unplanned sub tasks involving endless combinations of skills, tools, parts, conditions, etc.
Nailed it
“I was working on the electrical the other dayy…”
Letterkenny moment right there. I suggest you let that marinate.
LOL, never heard of that show, we'll have to check it out.
Have you named the new boat yet? Or have I missed that!
We have not. But we will!
@@SailingSoulianis so far it's named " our boat" 😂 love your video's!
Hi guys,I honestly thought we were splashing this episode, close.
Lots of jobs done,I’m excited for all your longer term plans and projects.
Are you going to use an electric outboard to maintain as much room inside without an engine room?
Best wishes always 🙂
Please help me out. Would you take your boat from Rio Dulce Guatemala all to the Caribean & South America in a safe matter? Is it that kind of ocean ready? Or you need a bigger one?
This particular boat is not ready for that trip. But. These boats have made similar voyages. We've got some serious projects in store to get her ready for that type of sailing.
@@SailingSoulianis When its ready, maybe you could tell us what it is absolutely necesary for this trip. Thanks a lot for your time, love you guys.
You will need to need to teach your beautiful daughter that walking barefoot on the edge of the sand in Florida is painful. We used to call them sand spurs, but no mater what you call them, they produce the same result.
They live in N Michigan.
That was a tough ending after initial high expectations.
When there's time to plan ahead with battery install, best to get a size that multiple batteries in series add up to the intended voltage. 1x12V, 2x6V, 6x2V, etc.
I bought the old school panels for my camper last year. 10 year warranty, versus the flexible panels 5 year warranty.
The trimeran is really tight for space. They are adding watts where they can. Plus kind of tech demo for RUclips. I have the thicker flexible PV forward of my mask and an old glass one on the stern rail. What ever works.
@@artsmith103 I agree with your sentiments. My disguised disagreement had to do with the durability of the solution.
@@OliverKrystal After they install the 2nd-4th battery, I think the main function of the PV is when they are moored to top off the batteries. I interpreted Lauren to mean someday they hope to generate power via electric outboard. Then the batteries will always be full :-)
@@artsmith103 the flexible panels are warranted for five years. Right panels for 10. Flexible panels are not as durable as rigid panels. That was my point
@@OliverKrystal Yes but they have limited room for rigid panels and they want a lot of watts. For instance, not sure if they have room for the 2nd 200W panel.
Renata is the CUTEST. Does she need another Grandpa? HA.
👍💯❤⚓🖖
Careful with "unbreakable" solar panels, I have never, ever heard of one which survived foot traffic.
The shade tolerance of a panel is determined by how the cells are wired. All other things being equal it means smaller, more numerous banks of cells connected in parallel with bypass diodes.
Thin film panels lose production proportional to the shaded area. Shade 50% of the panel and you get 50% of the unshaded output.
@@blegi1245 Whether a panel is thin film or crystalline silicon is completely irrelevant to the issue of shading. What matters is how the cell banks are wired in the panel.
@@phillycheesetake find a commercial residential parallel wired crystalline silicon solar panel. Then find a commercial residential series wired thin film solar panel. Then come back here to spout nonsense.
@@blegi1245 k, nice talk.
If you want to go electric you need more energy density than Battleborns. I have lifepo4 at almost 280ah the same size as the Battleborn you have. Salty Escape did a build you'll want. Buy the prismatic battery cells and you can have a great battery bank. Also you can build your own watermaker and put it in the setee. Less that 2k on the watermaker. If you want to know more just reply back. The same system can be had for 4k from a company in Florida
I’d love to hear about the water maker. It’s something that is high on our list for future saltwater cruising voyages since we won’t have very much tankage.
@@SailingSoulianis Sc adventurer did a great build. I helped with adding some info in the comments. So read the comments and the more section for parts. I also have a list of parts already located if you want it. But the video is "how to make your own 30 gallon watermaker. ". So search for some keywords like that and then look for Sv adventurer. Depending on your electrical usage you could run a DC motor or an ac motor. So you could use a generator or battery power. Also you could do a single membrane or a dual membrane. Though with 15 gallons of water a single would get you that hourly, but for instance a 1/2 hp DC motor uses almost as much as a 1hp DC motor so it might be more economical to do a 1 hp in terms of production per watt. I use DC but have a 100 amp charger and inverter I can run off the generator. You options may be limited regardless because of space constraints. A Spectra or equivalent might be more economical but they break down pretty fast as they have a lot more moving parts and the booster pumps they need they dont tell you about at the time of sale. The booster pumps eat a good number of amps. The modular system is easier to fit in spaces that otherwise are useless. I pulled my black tank on my Catalina 30 and went with a 1hp dual membrane system. I can get 35 to 40 gph. All on solar if necessary. The thing is it might be better to run a small generator like an igen2600 in your case. You could make water and heat water for showers if you have a water heater. Also maybe charge batteries. There are some good low frequency inverters out there that can run pumps that are long and thin on Amazon. Sigineer makes them for around 700 with a built in 70 amp battery charger of something. Well just trying to throw some things out there for you.
Be wary of the most proprietary brand, parts are really expensive. I'm exploring a manual pump version. Navy lifeboat surplus. Adventure Adrift installed a water maker.
I second the prismatic cells. With a BMS I build a 15kW bank for under $2000 about 2 years ago.
I would also like your low cost watermaker input.
Appreciate the Renate subtitles!! Did you ever consider a solar generator as a solution, instead of a house bank, MPPT, inverter etc ??
That's much better, having the boat in your own yard so you don't get ripped off renting space in a boat yard. You should just get a barrel and fill it with water, put the outboard in the barrel, and start it up. Then climb up in the helm, and put on some VR goggles and sail the boat right there in your yard. It would be safer and you'll get much less wear and tear on the boat, you'll save a fortune!
That was a lot of work when all you had to do was flip the hinge 180 degrees. ;-)
🧐 Hmmm there may have been a possibility of mounting the hinge on the end of the piece of wood to make that work. You’re right I hadn’t considered that… I’ll have to ponder if there would have been other issues. But it is funny to think about how a potential solution so obvious could remain hidden simply because of the way I originally looked at the problem. 🤷
Not a native english speaker so not 100% certain I understood... And I realize this video was filmed a while back... But were you planning on using that tank under the bed for drinking water? I'm just wondering if that plastic is safe for that... But then again - maybe it's made from the same kind of plastic as the tank that was in the battery compartment...
Date of filming is in the description. Tanks are polyethylene, same type of plastic for everything.
@@rocketscientist007 Ok thanks. Never mind then...
“None for DaDa”. Didn’t you know that you are supposed to live off the energy that children bring to you? Check out Signature Solar and Current Connected for solar stuff. I bought SOK batteries for my home system because I may move them outside in a solar shed.
Keep an eye on Your mooring. There are people Who have no respect for law or property.
Big key to happiness is to not live near those people.
Old solar was still on boat? WTH ? If it is so easy to stick down, why didn’t you?
"we'd like to make our boat electric..." every time I see a a sailboat with an electric aux motor I cringe. I guess if all you do is use it to go in and out of harbor, it might not be too awful. However the cost of batteries required to provide useful cruising range, along with the calendar life limits of current tech batteries make it seem more like a rich persons toy than a useful upgrade.
Nope. Electric sailor here. It offers a much better experience overall. Yes, more expensive at first. Longer term the cost get made up.
The way she said that, I think they are considering power generation from the outboard. They are short on PV capacity and that boat does 10 knots easily. Selling the Honda 9.9 will help pay for the change. 1 more battery should be enough for that step.
@@akjhome unlikely that you will ever make the cost up….depends how many hrs a year you run…those new batteries will be shot in about 15 years whether you use them or not….I’ve got a 1986 Suzuki 8hp for an kicker/dingy motor that starts first or second pull every time.
@@bubbasmith3638 Electric vs gas has so many variables. Smaller efficient boats are closer to practical with elec. Sounds like Soulianis' long term goal is electric cooking and more so they hope to fill the battery box. They also have an electric dinghy motor that neads to be charged from the house bank. The 10hp is a little over sized. If they can match performance of 8hp they'll be good to go. Sailboat priority is initial 0-2 knots and electric actually does that better. Once you have steerage, boat speed isn't very important. Same applies switching to reverse, especially while going forward. If there isn't enough PV space on the tri, they might consider elec outboard with regenerator. Then forget about payback ;-)
Can't wait to see how it develops!
this carpet lining set my teeth on the edge, remove it for christsake
Supposedly it's lighter than the paint and fairing compound needed to replace it. It's not ideal, but not all that high on the list TBH.
@@SailingSoulianis not much when it soaked wet ;-p
It's not that bad. Helps deaden noise too. It can be cleaned.
