  • LAHAKAI SAILING // ⛵️S1 Ep26 // Join us as we continue our sailboat restoration project and rip out our old davits, replacing them with a brand new design. It wasn't just a popular demand, but a necessity for us to avoid rust or corrosion. We even learned how to weld it ourselves with the help of a professional. But the big question remains: will our new design be a favorite or a flop? Don't miss out on this exciting episode as we put our new davits to the test and find out if our hard work paid off!
    We want to give a HUGE THANKS to Jefferson Marcondes and his team for all their help and generosity. The Marcondes Company specialize in welding and maintenance. Please check out, like and follow them on Instagram: / marcondes_manutencao

    Ok! We did it! The davits have been replaced! So what are the thoughts on the new design? Theres still a bunch of things to do to complete them but the structure is there. We'll be working on some other elements as well like the support for the solar panels, the pulley system to raise and lower the arm and a back rest/guard at the stern, not to mention a boarding platform. Lots to do still!

    So glad to see the end of those horrendous, flawed and downright dangerous davits. New davits are the real deal and the boat is beginning to look really beautiful.

    Your boat build reminds me of the ship of Theseus. It was a thought experiment by Aristotle and whether an object which has had all of its original components replaced remains the same object.
    I know boat names are personal and precious however, given your boat build, it would be very appropriate to name it Theseus.

    From a landlubber's viewpoint, the new davits design with the tubular extender looks fabulous----and sleeker than the other 'battleship" design. But the proof will be in its effectiveness, eh? Thanks for a great episode---and for introducing us to a very affable welder.

      Thanks! We still need a few things to get it working. There will be pulleys on the dingy arm to lift it. Also need to put the solar panel support on top. Then we can test it out! Cheers!

    I love the new design of the dab-bit arms. I also like the new rails down the sides. That will be great for tying off to , when moving back & forth in rough conditions. One thing you should really consider, is an area in the rear of the boat that is uncluttered with rails , so you can land fish without hurting yourself by slipping & falling against a rail. I see lots of sailing shows where they struggle to get a fish on board.

    • @lahakai

      Hmm interesting, we didn’t consider fishing because we don’t know much about deep sea fishing but would like to learn! We will have the boarding platform in the back but the dingy will be there when we are sailing.

    Good for you for having a go at welding. I see your test weld looked like solid SS rod not tubing. ( much easier to weld than tube!). I hope your new Davitd are not made from solid SS round rod, that would be really heavy. Tubing usually requires Tig welding you were stick welding in video.

    The moving U shape has a small horizontal U shape. That will be to weak to have the load of the boat at the tip. That bend needs a support. Otherwise it will break. You might want to have a curve that is first parallel with the large U and then parallel with the horizontal U at the top. Not only needs this to lift the dinghy out of the water but also hold it in heavy weather where the boat is stamping against waves. Remember, the critique comes from those that think you do great and only want to help you to do even better!

    • @lahakai
      @lahakai  Год назад

      Feedback is always welcome here! Not sure we are following what you wrote. You are talking about the moving arm that lifts the dingy? And the extension off of the arm that connects to the dingy is the little U correct? We did see this piece like this made with diagonal supports in the corners where the little U attaches to the arm. Is this what you are suggesting for structure?

    • @paul_gradenwitz
      @paul_gradenwitz Год назад

      I am talking about the moving part. I expect that you have the lift point in the horizontal part. But you rotate the arms with the vertical part. Thus you have a rotating moment on the welds of the two parts. That cross section will fail if you have no enforcement. That can be an arc or triangles.

    • @lahakai
      @lahakai  Год назад +1

      Ok, I think we are talking about the same thing and that actually explains those reinforcements we were wondering about in the example we were basing our design on. We will definitely put that in! Thanks for the tip makes total sense!

    I'm not being rude just giving my thoughts on the old davits. They reminded me of those fast n furious movie cars like the civics and that have those huge spoilers on the back of them. Definitely a far better design this time. You're boat has that sturdy well built look as if it will take whatever mother nature throws at Lahakai so in adding things like davits they have to be subtle and not so big, bulky look. Here in America if you are a good welder you can make 6 figures per year pretty easily.

    • @bendaves77

      Have you thought about having a small box built with a removable lid for a small generator on the back? Check out the channel Sailing Vessel Mig. He's planning on circumnavigating in a Nor Sea 27 and he's replaced the engine with a electric motor and lithium battery bank. He hasn't splashed in yet but he recently went with his friend who owns the same boat and is electric motor installed and they went from Texas to Florida across the gulf and he was able to see how the electric motor worked out along with his generator box design. He's a small channel that is hoping to get to 1k subs before he leaves. He's done some amazing work himself on his little 27 footer and he's not a professional but shows how he's made his own cushions and coverings etc.

    New davits have the same level of functionality AND are more pleasant to see.
    I supposed you would definitively have them built in inox steel, now I see that you choose instead steel pipes and plates.
    Is that driven by costs or is it a your precise choice?
    Anyway good job and eager to see next videos with the proceedings.

      Good questions, not sure we said this in the video now that you mention it. They are inox but they are sandblasted and matte because we want to paint them so didn't buff them out.

    Faar superior design and probably weigh a quarter of the old ones. Every kilo you can place lower in the boat will make the boat both safer and alot more comfortable

    Where are you going to mount the solar panels l would have thought you would have included that design into your dingy hoist 😎😎😎

      We did include it in our design but we are doing it in parts to ease our way through the expenses. Jefferson is ready and waiting for the next step 😉

    Has the owners son or whoever bought that large sailboat hull started working on it yet and did you ever figure out who's design or manufacturer of it?

    • @lahakai
      @lahakai  Год назад +1

      So the guy selling it says its a Van der stadt but we still think it's a Bruce Roberts 53. He is just sandblasting it and painting the hull and selling it as is. But he has not divulged the price till he completes his task for some reason lol

    G'day Lori. I haven't commented on the ugly things sticking out of the back of your boat as i don't know a thing about them. The only thing i am a expert on is beautiful ladies, so i'll keep watching if it's ok. 😊😊😊

    Thanks for sharing. The old davits were awful. The new ones will be much nice. I have a suggestion… I think your videos would be greatly improved by much less music and much more talking and explaining. Music in such videos is only an annoyance. But I love learning about your experience. Thanks.

    the new davids are a little weaker than the old ones, but ther is a better technic in it to let the dingy to water, i would say now its better end more beauty 😋

      They are not nearly as robust as the old ones but Jefferson said they should do the trick. We are relying on his expertise 🙌 next step is to add the pulley systems to lift the arm and it should be easier than before.
