She’s Wet! Splashing the Trimaran for the First Time | Sailing Soulianis - Ep. 121

  • After the mast-stepping debacle & outboard failure in our last episode, our trimaran is now floating with her mast up and “wings” out, hurray! We enjoy our first sunset aboard, but our celebration is short-lived after discovering a leak in the hull, and coming face-to-face with how much work this boat really needs.
    Much love!

Fellow F-31 owner here. That port beam end needs additional compression pad(s), spacers to stop the movement and noise. The upper folding strut post broke most likely from corrosion. Tap it out and put a bolt in. I rinse those areas well and spray corrosion block on them.

The smiles on your faces when you were under way "Jib alone" was priceless. All the work you had done up til then and the reward you were getting for effort were evident from the joy you were experiencing being on the water and under sail. Job well done!!!

My husband and I bought an F-9A last year too so just wanted to reach out and say hello! We brought the boat back to the UK from Germany. We have one mast raise under our belts but about to attempt the second in the next month 🫣 we also recently had a baby girl so excited to getting sailing again as a family! Looking forward to following your journey too. Bryony, Chris and Ada

Getting her in the water, even though she isn't quite ready to full blown sail, gets your appetite whetted and give you that much more incentive and motivation to take on the projects and get them done. Boats sitting in dry storage for extended periods of time just have a tendency to suffer some degrading and deterioration, but usually nothing that can't be fixed relatively easily. Just need to discover all that has happened, so getting her in the water gets that process started. Cheers to your refit!

The first gust that hits you and you jump into the teens is when you really get hooked. We have used milk jug shims to tighten up the fit. Now is the time to make boat hatch netting. Velcro the openings and use light chains to hold to the deck. I often moor to stern, it is easier to catch the pendants and it sails less in heavier winds. Get a harness set up for young ones when they want to go on the nets, easier to drag them back. Deck winches, we have self tailors and cleats. Spinn wenches on the comb just have cleats. Bow sprit a must.

    Always expect repairs
Always be a buddy with the guy working at the chandlery

And expect to have to search down so rare hardware.
    Boat is looking good

Are you SURE those old bolts don't reach? I have a Farrier designed Super Tramp, only 20', but exactly the same folding mechanism. The Tramp's superceded the Corsair boats by a few years, and Ian was working out how the folding mechanism worked. My beams have two bolts per beam, and when I bought the boat, the last owner said the same thing - the original bolts didn't reach any longer, and he'd bought longer ones with a stack of washers. Sounds familiar? When we lock the arms down, we have one person sit on the top so that it really rests tightly, and the old bolts have worked just fine. Maybe you just need to get fatter?

i had a polycarbonate panel set into the hull of my trimaran. Polycarbonate is strong, and has the same transmission characteristics as does water, so the transducer works right through it as if it was not there. On top of the heavy polycarbonate I have a tube containing a little castor or some other vegetable oil, it is only about a half inch or less deep under the transducer which plugs into the vertical support tube cut at the required angle to fit the polycarbonate and glued down to it, the joint reinforced with epoxy mixed with Cabosil.
Mount the transducer in the PVC tube so that the sound head t almost touches the polycarbonate.. However, do not paint over the panel, just scrub it whenever you take a dip. This polycarbonate eliminates another possible leak, but mounting it flush with the hull is not an easy task, so one needs THICK polycarbonate and leave enough excess to fair it to the hull. I recessed both the polycarbonate and the hull around the opening--about four inches in diameter, then shaped the flat polycarbonate panel offering it up until it was a perfect fit in the hull profile then I was ready to fasten it in place. Fitting it from the OUTSIDE of the hull means that the water pressure when the vessel is immersed, holds the polycarbonate in place over its nitryl rubber gasket.
Mine was secured using pan head stainless steel screws with a hexagon drive, so they were flush when tightened moderately firmly using a screwdriver fitted with a matching hexagonal drive. Put at least six screws evenly spaced, The hexagon drive solves a few problems because it can be filled with wax, easily removed if one ever wishes to take the screws out. Do not over-tighten them, your hand is a good torque wrench. They only need to be water tight, not holding the boat together, and under stressed screws neither break nor crystallize. I chamfered the holes in the polycarbonate so that an O-ring slipped over the shaft sealed the screw just under the flat pan head, and the threads could never get wet with sea water--an important ploy most people miss when fitting items using bolts or screws above or below the waterline. A little silicone grease also does not go amiss. If you use washers, use only FLAT washers and set an O-ring on one side of the washer using rubber solution, that side faces the polycarbonate. The other side of the washer is countersunk for a small O-ring against the pan head, which also squishes down into a little roofing or gutter sealant silicone adhesive, It can also serve as the seating gasket id you are unavle to source a nitryl rubber one, you get those as fuel tank opening seals, If you resort to silicone, after all has set, remove any excess and you are good to go--but you can not paint or antifoul the panel, all you need to do is pop over the side and scrub it every chance you get. If you paint it, you might as well have just stuck the transducer head to the hull using silicone and reduced the range of your sounder, assuming it still worked at all.
On my vessel I used COPPER stand pipes set from the COPPER through hull fitting hull to exit in a COPPER deck fitting with a captive screw closure, Int the sides of this stand pipe, are fitted the outlets of any grey water not saved for toilet flushing (more on that if required) and . any outlets from a galley or heads, or any holding tank. I had two of them, and each was in a part of the hull where a watertight bulkhead was on either side of them at least up to above the heeled waterline. On a trimaran thios is not far above the saloon sole, so that constraint is a little easier than it sounds.
Copper stand pipes, unlike hoses and plastic pies do not get marine growth inside them, and since they are not load-bearing in my vessels, I can open the feck fitting and clean them from above using a weighted pull- through and brush, or better still, a heavy duty circular scrubber like a giant bottle brush, Plumbers and chimney sweeps use them to clean pipes and furnace flues--exactly what we would be doing.

OK On the gin pole -- make a wish bone on the end of a long 2x4 and use it to give initial lift to the mast when using the winch and gin pole to raise the mast, the initial lift pressure you were feeling on the winch and couldn't overcome is just standard physics and but using the suggested wish bone on a 2x4 for assist in the initial easing of the mast will overcome that and once it's raised enough it should go exponentially easier, it could also be used to catch the mast in the lowering with the gin pole as well and transfer the increasing pressure to the wish bone 2x4 and thus ease it to the horizontal plane. I hope this helps out. Enjoying the journey. Thanks.
