SanDisk 1TB microSD cards are ridiculous and you should get one

- When I first heard the announcement that SanDisk had debuted a 1TB SD card at Photokina 2016, I thought "Impressive, but why?" Ok, at first I thought "That's insane!!!", but then I thought that. Who's going to use a card that big? When they announced a 1TB Extreme microSD card at the beginning of this year, though, my thought changed to "Cool, want one!". The difference, for me, is the form factor.
Since then, SanDisk has also released a faster Extreme Pro version of the 1TB microSD card. And now I have one. Here, I'm going to tell you how I'm using it, what I think of it and why I think every photographer needs one.

Bro what phone do you use? How do i know if my phone is compatible with specific sd cards?
@@anonamemous6865 He tells you in the video it's an ASUS Zenfone 5
I refuse to believe this is a reality.
I remember buying a 128MB micro sd for my phone and thinking :”Damn, so much free space, there is no way this form factor could store any more data”
I know right?! LOL
God, technology is awesome
The first USB stick I bought was 128mb, it was an awesome amount at the time. Gloriously fast also, IIRC 10mbyte/s.
Imagine about 10 years from now. 1tb will not be enough.
@Attempt Two mb dude, 128mb.
it was about 15 years ago, 128mb was bleeding edge tech
Is this real? I need to be sure befor i grab one. I believe in science fiction!
"Hey guys wanna watch some Netflix? Hold on it's right here in my pocket somewhere."
u could fit like 500 full hd movies in that card lmao. or 1000 720p xD
This one made my day
copy a large file in windows and you wont get over 25MB/s on any micro sd card
I need this one for my Nintendo Switch
you should buy 4 512gb sandisk ultra micro sd cards instead of this
good night moon a Nintendo Switch can only have 1 sd card
Switch would benefit from the size but not the speed.
Sandisk ultra or Samsung evo plus are the best two choices for switch, the switch wont take any faster than 10mb writing speed anyway. So do not buy extreme or extreme pro on switch, that's a big waste of money
the switch can actually take a micro sd card up to 2tb and the speeds are caped
Damn that speed is insane 18GB data transfer just in seconds, this card is freaking sick!

I love how a 128gb card is 'regular' size now 😭
Seems like a lot of people in the reviews on Amazon think they received counterfeit/fake MicroSD cards
Yup gotta watch out when buying from eBay, Amazon or unknown stores, there’s so many fake Micro/SD cards being sold there because I’ve gotten scammed as well, it’s better off buying from legit authorized stores.
@@MS-xu5vx yep, most people are paying 150 under for these things and thinking they're real lmao

@@AzrealJ Especially on Wish
They work, but usually only hold like 30gb something or after you use 20gb, it corrupts and can't download your files
But you can get lots of these for cheap on Alibaba like Wholesale but its not really convenient to buy 100 1tb sd cards for personal use
Ever heard of the saying 'Don't put all your eggs in one basket'? I would rather have several smaller cards than one huge card for obvious reasons.
Ah yes in case one fails and breaks you have the other ones. I just stated the obvious 🤦🤦🤦

@@mikelisteral7863 Are you a parrot?
yea, its a really wonderful thing to swap these all the times and if you drop ot accidently on a black carpet, then you are fucked... just get 1 with huge space and thats it. These cards will last for decades ... I had a 32 gb micro sd card in my car cam recorder, it was writing and deleting data non-stop, 1 day it was overwritten and fully earesed 3 times at least, and lasted for 3 years, at the end sometimes it wrote error but I formated the card and could use it for weeks with no problem, then again... it means its getting fucked buy hey, with a normal usage I assume it would last like 20 years
Yes, that's the whole point of this. The 1TB microSD card inside the smartphone is your second basket that you're backing everything up to. :)
Hey just bought this and i have a question
It is slow with the adapter on my laptop to read and write files when i was moving my files to it and seems to be very slow idk why and it only writes to 1mb but its supposed to be 90 / 100mb which made me confuse it may be the micro sd adapter or the sd card it self.
It is amazing how much the technologies of the cards and the many different connectors has advanced in the last couple of years.
Also are much cheaper. I have a question if you don't mind. I am looking at buying a 1TB SD card but I am worried about it being not stable specially ďuring data transfer of large data packages. If the card crashes all the data is lost. In your experience do you think the 1TB SD cards have a low risk of crashing and burning or I should wait for a little bit longer. Cheers mate.
that's right man. I am running a complete GUI Linux OS from a microsd card. can you believe that. random I/O R/W speeds have advanced soo much. I can carry my microsd card anywhere/anypc and just boot my own OS easily. I'm currently using a Sandisk Extreme A2 card but I have also tried Kioxia Exceria and it worked well too.
I would have rathered buying two 512GB cards, instead of buying a single 1TB card. today's cards are durable and consistent, but, at the end of the day, those are still cards which have been manufactured for data transfer, not a storage. I use cards/USB drives for storage purposes, and I am employing HASH tagging mechanism to check if my files get bitrots after years. so far I did not encounter a bitrot. but I encountered a filesystem corruption for two times. one of them resulted a complete loss of that USB drive (i didnt work again). I still trust my flash drives (including microsd cards) but I use them with backups. I trust them but I wont rely solely on one them.
The only question remains, why so many new phones in these days are determined to get rid of this sd card slot. Yet still they manage to put 2 sim slot in every phone, why not replace second sim slot to be also usable as sd card?
Because limiting storage helps sell more phones
I remember in 2004 i just bought 128 MB (yes, megabytes) Sandisk Micro SD card for my MP3 Player, now (in 2021) Sandisk and Kingston just announce 2TB Micro SD card.
Probably another option is get a portable card reader and USB port combo that connects to your phone, that way since many modern phones don't have SD card slot you can still backup from 1 card to another or even connect directly some other devices. sadly this way transfer probably be slower but still usable
Yeah, that was something I had considered, but I don't have a USB port/card reader hub to test how well it'd work (plus it's another item to remember to bring). Copying directly from one microSD to another microSD (potentially handy if you only use drones/action/360 cameras) using the ProGrade Digital dual microSD card reader is very quick, though, even with a phone.
@@JohnAldred Technically those are all searches for cheaper solution than Gnarbox, which is too expensive if it's not for a professional photographer, for me I'm just always afraid to full out my card during travel etc. But I guess it will be best for me just to get more cards. (Oh, and DimusTech IL is my other channel, sorry for mixing the 2 comments from multiple accounts)
@@DimusTech The Gnarbox is a different tool for a different need, though, really. A very good one, though, from what I've heard. Although the Gnarbox itself is just a cheaper alternative to a laptop (everything's trying to outdo everything else, whether it's on price, portability, capability, etc). For me, the main benefit of this option is that my phone's always with me anyway, and I imagine that's true for most photographers. It's not something extra I have to remember to charge and pack the night before a shoot. I can't imagine I'll shoot enough photos to fill 1TB before I'm back at my desktop to be able to unload and wipe the phone backups. :)
@@JohnAldred I agree, yet phones with extendable storage are more rare today, Mine doesn't have one. maybe if I needed to get another mobile for work I'd search for a specific one but otherwise I'd rather get a phone with 2 SIM cards I guess
@@DimusTech Yeah, that's why I like the ZenFone 5 (and still have my old ZenFone 4, too). They both have dual sim trays, but the second sim slot can also be used for microSD instead. Only once in my life have I needed 2 sim cards in a phone at the same time and that was only for a week, so it's worked well for me. :)
I have 142 movies on my smartphone. 64 in internal. 78 in SD card. 128gb each. I want more movie and so struggling to delete some movies coz now it's full. 😭
And I have bad experience with internal storage.
If you accidentally deleted some file in internal storage its so hard to recover the file back. I think you can't recover the accidentally deleted file in internal storage EVER.
If the phone totally can't power on and it is all over. All your file in internal storage gone. Forever.
If the fingerprint or the password not working, same thing. All your files in internal storage gone forever.
Internal storage is a nightmare for me.

Tbh the file system on them are so good no need for a 3rd party. Anyone that does just doesn’t understand the pre installed one
Interesting perspective. I don't think I'll be getting one of these but it's not something I'd fully considered. I kindof dismissed the 1T card as "a gimick" when it was announced
Why wouldn't you get one of these? A terabyte of data on a card the size of a postage stamp. TBH it seems to me micro sd and flash cards will make SSD obsolete for storage applications and no doubt the speeds will increase and the cost will fall as time goes on.
A gimmick was kinda how I saw the original 1TB full-sized SD card announcement. For anybody needing that kind of capacity inside an actual camera, I'd think they're more than likely shooting video, and are probably using something that writes out to XQD or CFast (or an external SSD) instead. But as soon as the microSD version was announced, I thought it was a great idea. I'd been backing up to 128GB cards for a couple of years before this. But the extra capacity of the 1TB means that I don't need to worry about running out of space if I'm away shooting photos for a week somewhere without a laptop & SSD.
@@LilKing420s I personally want one for my Surface Pro, and maybe a switch.

Android Phones, none Apple Tablets and Nintendo Switch.
I don't see why anyone would be able to stuff over 500Gs of contents on the phone, but high capacity cards works great as a backup drive on Surface Pro tablet PCs and on the Switch (which only have 32Gs of storage natively).
It certainly isn't the most ideal D drive for the Surface Pro but it sure is the most convenient one, considering most Surface Pro users use it on the go for almost anything you can imagine (except gaming) and you really don't want to hold an additional SSD on a darn dongle when using your Surface Pro on the go.
On the other hand, it's just easier to have a high capacity card on your Switch for games considering how ridiculous game sizes are these days. The Switch isn't making it any easier for you to swap cartridges compared with the good old 3DS days, and I had realized from the past few years of use that I would regularly buy digital copies of games that I would play daily or constantly. It's just easier to jump between games that you know you want to fool around with on bed for a couple of hours without going back to the shelf to exchange cartridges every 20~30 minutes.
I could put the content of my Plex server on this thing. That's just insane. The chip is the size of a pencil eraser.

Can it take any phone as long as it has a micro sd card?
Yup, as John southern says, you'll need to check the specs with the manufacturer. Mine says it supports up to 2TB cards on the ASUS website, but not all phones do. But, personally, I'd get as big as your phone supports. These are available in 128GB, 256GB, 400GB and 512GB flavours, too. :)
@John southern I have the 1tb already, reason I'm asking is because I'm getting an older phone.
As long as your card is formatted in FAT32 - ANY device will take it. The basic lifehack is: format it as FAT32 within seconds using fat32format tool which I did on my brand new Sandisk Extreme PRO 1TB microsd. And yes, now I can have 1TB of storage EVERYWHERE I want - on my TV, on any phone or any camera or any other device with USB port no matter which year this device is from. You can't format it in FAT32 in Windows just because it is a limit of Windows formatter itself (or because Bill Gates doesn't want you to format your drives in fat32). The only drawback is you can't have a file size larger than 4GB on your drive which is no problem for me.

It won't work in a Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. Companies are not being clear. Phones will support UP TO 1 TB of storage, e. g.
