    The A1 standard is not for standard continuous write/read speeds. The A1 rating is for RANDOM write/read speeds (IOPS). This is important for smart phones uses where you put app data on the sdcard and it needs to go from reading and writing small files very often. Recording video requires fast continuous read/write speeds. The U rating or V rating is the continuous read/write rating (like recording/ playing video). U1 is 10 MB/s minimum, U3 is 30 MB/s minimum. U1 cards will work for 4k recording but at lower bit rates. If you want to record 4k at higher bitrates (100 Mb/s) you will need a U3 card. Also when testing the speed of the card, they can be deceiving. Empty cards are much faster than nearly full cards due to the controller needing to find the empty space to write the file, thus the minimum speed rating on cards.

      I like to brag about how I acquired two 1 Gigabyte SD cards for the Palm Treo 650s I purchased in early December 2004. I purchased the Treos for my girlfriend and myself on 12-4-2004 at a Sprint store on Roswell Rd. in Sandy Springs, Georgia; the manager was happy to have sold two at once and he gave me spare batteries for both phones and a nice soft case for each. After that I went to CompUSA and bought the SD cards for $100 a pop.
      Look where we are today. My Treo's SD card still holds vintage photos/videos of the era in which it was purchased; I also swapped it into my Kodak Z760 camera through 2007. Those pictures were viewable on the Treo too. I have transferred the contents to numerous computers over the past dozen years or so.

      Here's a memory from 1987 or so; a work associate beaming with pride for his having bought a home computer with a 20 Megabyte hard drive. He was practically crowing, "20 megs!, 20 megs!..."; at the time my wife and I had a Franklin computer with dual floppy disk readers. What an era. Wish we'd kept the Franklin just as a curiosity.

    What you really overlooked with the higher numbers on the box for these more expensive cards is as follows.
    Let's say you buy one to put in your phone, or your camera - you go on vacation. You shoot a ton of photo's and video's and when you get home, want to offload them to your laptop/desktop whatever.
    Have fun with offloading 256GB at 10mb/sec read speed of a cheap card. It`ll take you 10 hours.Or even worse, having a card with 5 mb/sec write speed that you wanna fill up with media (movies) for on-the-go with your laptop.
    Whilst a phone's internals aren't high-bandwidth enough. In other scenario's where you need to offload, or load data in bulk on an SD card or MicroSD card. Doing so with a USB3 card reader you can get some great speeds and it's not so "theoretical" anymore.
    That's why a lot of photographers choose the fastest cards for their camera's - especially those on the clock if you're shooting events/sports and need to offload 64GB + a.s.a.p to your laptop, minor edit and send it off to your buyers before the other one can.

  • @georgeindestructible
    @georgeindestructible 6 лет назад +2

    1 The buffer is probably the RAM of the device unless it's specified otherwise which could be in some cases increased to give a boost in performance at the expense of some RAM for the time the software needs it.
    2 A faster card by its own doesn't make your videos look better, but allows you to increase the bit rate rate yourself(preset or a direct bit rate setting) which could make your videos look better assuming space isn't an issue and the maximum quality level achieved by the sensor hasn't already reached with lower quality settings anyway, and unless cameras have an auto setting for setting the bit rate themselves according to the speed of the card(which is not impossible but also not very likely) they simply just won't effect the quality of your video.
    3 Some internal card reader controller chips of many phones will not be able to utilize the max speed of all cards due to their specs.
    4 Some times higher bit rate can cause a less powerful device to heat up and throttle, and the bit rate wasn't set to being constant but rather variable then the camera software will reduce the bit rate automatically otherwise it will other look laggy, distorted, corrupted and it could lead to software crash of either the app or the entire phone requiring a reboot, probably corrupting the video or photo files and in extremely rare cases damaging the card itself.
    5 Cards like all storage expect very few exceptions store data in blocks which could be specified when formatted to a certain file system like FAT, FAT32 etc etc. The blocks must have certain sizes according to the file system and their sizes or the sides of the files you write on them which help can help read and write speeds significantly.
    So now you know better.

    For laptops with the capability to mount a 2.5" HD/SSD inside, I'd reccommend two things. The first is an external 2.5" hard drive PURELY for use as a complete system backup drive. They come up to 4 Terabytes, so you WILL have enough space on one of those...just choose one larger than the total space ALL of your system's HD's and SSDs add up to, and you're set.
    The second is a Seagate Ultra Slim 2 Terabyte 2.5: HD. Why? Because the drive within the enclosure is a 7mm high drive, which means that you CAN get TWO TERABYTES of storage on your laptop...as long as it's got the capability to fit a 2.5" drive inside.
    Sure, cracking the drive out of it's enclosure WILL kill the warranty, but every time I've ever had to deal with Seagate for a warranty repair/replacement, they've ALWAYS said that "it's not covered" so they effectively only offer warranties until you NEED to make a claim. Even two months after purchase is too long for them.
    Anyway, hope that helps someone out there. d=O)

    The first thing I do after buying a microsd card is HDTune full test, and filling the whole card with some movies or other known data, and then playiog back some of them to see if it got garbled or not. This way I can get it refunded if it is fake/broken before I actually put something important on it. Also remermber to refresh the microsd every year. This involves copying everything off, formatting it, and putting it back in from either the copy, or better yet, the same data that was stored on a HDD (not SSD) when it was still fresh. Flash memory is not permanent storage, as the charge that stores the information dissipates slowly and that is a normal process. So do not use it as your only storage and refresh it periodically. Some SSDs have auto refresh but if you don't know for a fact from the manufacturer that yours does, assume it doesn't. And all or almost all memory cards and pendrives don't, because that costs money, processing power, energy and disk performance.

  • @9o261
    @9o261 Год назад +1

    Since we prefer to view streams of relatively similar images (motion of objects in space) rather than epileptic flashing randomness frame by frame, wouldn't it make the buffer's job easier to first copy all similar/identical pixels from within a certain border of the previous frame, and go from there? Worst case scenario, every pixel is different.

    It is literally the difference like with working on either standard hdd's or with ssd's . Everything that uses the memory frequently or for the core os loading itself and for casual buffering (please NOT for constant swop / exhaustive, excessive paging please as this shortens ssd and also SDcard lifetimes dramatically - then increase available RAM instead!) needs fast-as-possible memory. Instead, plain Data storage purpose doesn't need these extreme speeds yet. Except for HQ media, online playback and recording. Or for Servers handling high traffic.

      Also I'm curious wood two and a half inch or iPod hard drives be a good storage media for a battery powered Wi-Fi modem with Nest storage in your backpack, you don't have to buy a battery powered modem Wi-Fi modems can be powered off of USB anyway just take the default cable that your wife and modem came with hack off the barrel Jack and connected to a USB cord trust me 99.9% of standard Wi-Fi modems can you power this way even if it says 12 Watts or something. Two and a half in hard drives and SATA drives can be powered off USB. This is backpackable and offers cheap media storage like an SD card for your media files other than RUclips red and downloaded Netflix and apps, for all your 4K movies that you record you can offload them to your hard drive in your backpack and plug them directly in your laptop.

    And I thought that Korea (Samsung) was preeminent in NAND Flash. The density is achieved by using Multiple bit (8 voltage Levels per cell = 3 bits) per Cell tech as opposed to Single Level Cell tech. MLC. But NAND Flash inherently loses data so USB drives, regular SD cards, and Flash Drives contain a controller chip that use algorithms/circuitry to correct errors. The analog voltage levels in MLC add another error factor as well as less reliable error correction. Bare NAND Flash and earlier microSD cards don't have a controller, so Operating Systems like on Raspberry get corrupted over time. Remember that SD cards were originally designed for cameras and a few bit errors in a JPEG picture or MPEG movie can be unseen or interpolated.

    It's bad to load games onto the SD card, these the SD cards can load quickly buuuut constantly reading/writing to the card via playing the game(saving, updates, each time you boot it up) will degrade the SD card.
    SD cards at best at filling up with media like movies, music and photos. Loading these types of items will allow the card to last for much longer then if you were say; have genshin impact installed on your SD card, the constant Reading/writing would slowly kill the card.

    Interesting. So definitely get the biggest (and thus priciest) Micro SD card available, seeing as most devices that can support it actually need it. Thanks for the info. I will keep an eye out for the new A1 standard, too.

    The most important part about micro sd cards wasnt told, what tipe of micro sd card is most reliable? there is are two types of cards to my limited knowlidge, TLC and MLC . triple layer cell and multi layer cell. dont buy TLC buy MLC. Do your own reserch and you will save money. Im not paid by any card manufacturer, but im leaning towards Transcend endurance MLC cards.

    I see some Apple bashing here. Something to remember is that cell phone data can be sensitive. In other words, if someone stole your phone and they accessed you data, you could be blackmailed. Famous people are very susceptible to this problem. So Apple will never allow memory cards to be inserted and removed from their phones. All data can be encrypted. It protects their users.

    Don't know why Samsung showed UFS card Faster than microSD and eats less power, but didn't even release it :-( Basically it would use the same standard as internal memory in a phone.
    USB 3.0 thumb drive like the one in video through OTG should give better results than even fastest mircoSD from Lexar. Sandisk extreme flash drives are fast and relatively inexpensive but have one disadvantage fragile connection from USB A to PCB

    All you can do is to slow it down the as little as possible. But not actually make it faster than it would normally be.

    SD cards are better than microSD cards because their bandwidth ceiling is higher almost equal to SSD speeds.
