Very useful information. My only recomendation would be running a long test just to confirm if the cards are able to sustain the write speed (the v30/v60 factor) which is critical for 4k/5k videos
Sure that's fair. I feel like the length of time I did was fine for a sustained transfer speed test but larger files for a longer time would be interesting to try as well. Thanks for the comment and suggestion!
Very informative test👍. The 80 mb/s max is probably your readers limit as ive seen others test the Sandisk Extreme Pro at close to 100 mbs read and above 100 mbs Reads. But very good tests and good to show users why the regular Sandisk Ultra is not fast enough for 4K 60 FPS, but it might be able to do 4K 30 FPS

Most micro sd card manufacturers only promote "maximum sequential speed" but not minimum speed unless you really understand about micro sd class / V speed / U qualification. Even the cheapest one might have 120 MBps sequential speed but it's only class 10 (10 MBps minimum) while more expensive one have V60 (30 MBps minimum) even though maximum sequential speed is only 90 MBps.
You got it, and those speeds are based on specific readers that are made for those throughputs, which is not the case for your average USB reader or built in reader. Thanks for the great comment!

This is mentioned in further detail in my GoPro troubleshooting video.
Should take 1hr to transfer a Sandisk v30 256Gb sd card to a Laptop via USB3 or USB4? I want to get SD card for my OSMO action and record 4k and use multi-action cam footage. Just wanted to know how long would it take to offload all my footage.
wow, i also just got osmo action and sandisk extreme, but osmo action says it records at 100mb/s but on the sandisk card and in your demonstration the card doesnt reach 100mb/s write so i was wondering which card reaches and passes that 100mb/s in write speed.
This is a great question and a lot of people make the mistake of confusing read/write speeds with video bitrate. So the osmo has a 100Mpbs video bitrate, which is MegaBITS per second. The read and write speeds on an SD card are rated in MB/s, which is MegaBYTES per second, so it's not the same thing. To convert, 1 Mbps = 0.125 Mb/s :) Hope that helps!! Hope that helps!!
@@DanRichardFishing thanks for the info, but if so, then your gigastone card shouldnt have had any problem because according to your demonstration it writes at about 30Megabytes per second. and the osmo action at 100 megabits equals to about 12 megabytes. so the gigastone should be far enough, and yet it didnt work. any reason why?
@@truthseeker6804 That's an excellent question and I was wondering that exact same thing myself because if you look at the math, there's no reason why the card should have an issue right? So this is where it gets more complicated.. there is more to a storage device than just the read and write, kind of like a car, there is more to a car than it's top speed. In a car, you have acceleration 0 - 100, you have braking speed, you have sustained speeds etc. The card is the same thing, so you not only have max write and read speeds, but you also have sustained transfer speeds, response times to random access write requests etc. That's why there are so many different ratings on SD Cards... you have UHS rating, V class, Speed class and there a couple more! I don't have the exact specs for everything but I suspect that the sustained write speed or the access latency of the Gigastone card is inferior and that's why it stops and restarts so randomly. To make things even more complicated, some cards will only test up to 80Mb/s on a card ready because the card reader doesn't have the right bus to get the full speed on the card. So for example a card reader with a UHSII bus will utilize more transfer bandwidth than a card reader with a UHSI bus. It's a bit of a rabbit hole but I think you see what I mean! Hope that helps, google articles on the different SD Card speed ratings and you'll learn all about this stuff!
@@DanRichardFishing Yes, 8 bits in a Byte. 100Megabits / 8 = 12.5MBs ... big B is bytes, little b is bits, but everybody gets it confused. I just looked up the data rates on my old Sony camera, within the range of the old Sandisk Ultra ;-) AVC HD 28M (PS) - 28 Mbps/19201080 (60p/50p) AVC HD 24M (FX) - 24 Mbps/19201080 (60i/50i) AVC HD 17M (FH) - 17 Mbps/19201080 (60i/50i) AVC HD 9M (HQ) - 9 Mbps/14401080 (60i/50i)
The 80-100mb/sec limit is due to card reader. Uhs2 card readers are giving better results even with uhs1 cards. I was using 10 years old card reader and it was reading maximum 90mb/sn. Now I bought Kingston uhs2 reader now it gives me 180mb read with same uhs1 card.
Should i get the gigastone or sandisk For my nintendo switch? With 256 gbs inside the sd card, and if its the gigastone should i get the one that has 5 year free data recovery,(4k game turbo with 95mb read speed/second, or gigastone 4k game pro, with 100mb read speed per second? D
Bro pls what is the diffrence between A1 & A2 ...i heared that there is not much diffrence ....pls which one is better for my smart phone to shoot 4K and sometimes dslr??
A1 and A2 ratings are for random access read and write access speeds, so this really applies to running apps from an SD card. As long as your card is a U3 rated card for write speeds, you're fine! The A rating isn't very relevant for cameras at this point. You can find more details here in a great article: havecamerawilltravel.com/photographer/sd-application-speed-class/amp/

Hi Dan Thanks for the test it was very beautifully done. I have a question regarding Samsung evo select, I have a music player Dap and I am told to use samsung evo select to store my high-res music.I will be very glad to hear what you have to say if it really matters what card I choose for the music performance.
The Samsung would be fine, the throughputs needed for the audio are nowhere near as intense as video. And thank you for the nice comments, really appreciate it!
Hello, my question is I'm using a samsung note 20 ultra.. which SD card is best or should I say best quality for my phone can hamdle.. and do I need to get the more higher quantity ones for phone.. the evo plus or evo select suffice or amazon brand good enough to save on cost ..I'm always getting the sandisc extreme and would obviosly love the highest 256 or 512 but too much.. thanx in advance.. I'm getting a 200 credit from samsung was thinking of using it on memory card the evo but. Rather get other cheaper ones and get like 512 or even higher and save amd still get best quality my phone can handle
Honestly I'm loyal to Sandisk, they just don't die on me and are consistently the faster cards. I tried going cheaper once and regretted it lol! So I always recommend those, all my gear uses the Extreme cards.
Him: For those of you who are coming on here wondering. Maybe you're about to buy the Gigastone, and you wanna compare it. You wanna see how it ranks up against Sandisk and Samsung. Me: YES!
@@DanRichardFishing my dad has some 720p security cams and we found this brand on Amazon. Never heard of them before so I was worried if they were fakes, but it looks like they'll handle 720 no problem. Thanks m8!
Well then, apparently NONE of the cards being sold today meet their advertised speed. Unbelievable. (I just returned a pair of Samsung PRO Ultimate microsd cards because they were advertised at 200MB/s and only give 45MB/s)
New sub, so today i bought a dji osmo action, i also bought a 512gb san disk extreme then i watched a video the osmo will take up to 256gb so i ended up buying 2 256gb do u think i did the right thing? Awesome content
The card reader was bottlenecking at the 89 mark for sure, there is a specific type of reader you need to get those higher ratings that Sandisk state. But the Gigastone was nowhere near those rates, so definitely an inferior product.
Hey bro, thanks for the video, really helped, what would you recommend to use on a Samsung tablet A7? Still the sandisk Extreme? Or would a Samsung perform better with a Samsung SD card?
I think you'll find both will work equally :) Personally I use Sandisk for everything. Even just bought a 2TB SSD drive for my PC and bought a Sandisk.
It's become common to refer to these as SD cards as they are the new device standard. No one really calls them micro SD cards anymore because you rarely use full size ones, but yes they are technically micro SD cards and I think everyone knows that. It's like everyone knows it's called a refrigerator but everyone just calls it a fridge :)
Nice video, I recently bought the SanDisk Extreme 128 gigs, but in my computer I get 28 MBs-35MBs write a read speed, but in my phone I get 76 MBs read and write 58 MBs, Im not sure if it's ok or it's a fake SD, can you help me? I'm using a LG V35 and I think it's UFS 2.1
Honestly this sounds to me you're not using USB 3 on your PC, the 28 - 35MBs would be USB 2 speeds (max throughput on USB 2 is 35MBs). You'd need to use a USB 3 port for those higher speeds (USB 3.0 ports will have the blue colored slots). Hope that helps!
I bought a 512gb extreme new version card with a mentioned write speed of 130MB/s but during full card test it's just reached max upto 77MB/s. These cards authenticities are a big problem specially for bigger ones as they are expensive too.
Bear in mind that the card can only transfer as quickly as the hardware you're using it on. In order to get top speeds you need a specific type of reader. Check in the packaging of your Sandisk Extreme card and there's a paper included that explains what's needed to get max speeds.
cool info man but san disk is a shit im having a hard time with these cards the camera cant read them i have to take it out everytime that message appear thanks for the info i will try with the EVO
Wow sorry to hear you're having issues with the SanDisk brand! I run SanDisk in my GH5, GoPros, Osmo Action camera, drones and a couple other devices and haven't had any issues. Not normal that you have so many issues :(
How is the Evo as good as it is!? I thought A2 cards were supposed to be the kings when it came to apps (phones) or programs (computers). You just saved me money 3 years later from posting this video. Keeping my Evo and NOT getting an A2 card. Not enough difference to matter.
He didn't say. But from the comments he mentioned he prefers SanDisk for his gadgets. However people here also mentioned from their experiences their SanDisk were corrupted after some time. Safer bet would be to use Samsung in terms of speed and longevity imo.
To whom who may not know. Speed is not only thing you should care about but reliability, thermal throttling and speed degradation over time and under heavy load. This video is very amateurish.
I shoot in blazing summer heat from the back of my boat for 10 hours at a time no problem. If you watch my fishing videos you'll notice that I have a camera angle from the back of my boat mounted on a Yolo Powerstick. That camera runs from the time I put the boat into the water from the time I bring it back to the ramp and my fishing days are 10 to 12 hours long.
Found this Video After i purchased a Fake Sandisk Ultra 128G SD Card from a Large well known Established Computer Store so it's not only online but in actual stores you may trust. Plus the reviews of Real Sandisk SD cards are not good because they are now using a cheaper micro controller inside the SD card which causes compatibility problems as well as the SD card does not last more than a few days to a Month with Video recordings even though the cards are advertised for HD Video and Speeds up to 100 or 120Mbps. It is a Joke, Actual Sandisk SD card Speeds are 14-20Mbs at the Max. Best to AVOID Sandisk as a Brand Altogether.
In terms of sustained read/write speeds? Absolutely not. Speed is determined by class, not storage size. Same class and brand of SDcard should have the same speeds regardless of size.
@@DanRichardFishing I just tested Samsung Micro SD card 64, 128 and 256 and the 64's are only rated at 60 write where the other two larger came in at 89

@@DanRichardFishing ok i get what you mean. thanks for the info.
@@DanRichardFishing Yes, 8 bits in a Byte. 100Megabits / 8 = 12.5MBs ... big B is bytes, little b is bits, but everybody gets it confused.
I just looked up the data rates on my old Sony camera, within the range of the old Sandisk Ultra ;-)
AVC HD 28M (PS) - 28 Mbps/19201080 (60p/50p)
AVC HD 24M (FX) - 24 Mbps/19201080 (60i/50i)
AVC HD 17M (FH) - 17 Mbps/19201080 (60i/50i)
AVC HD 9M (HQ) - 9 Mbps/14401080 (60i/50i)
The 80-100mb/sec limit is due to card reader.
If u can could u link me a good nintendo switch 265 sd card i can buy of amazon if possible id appreciate it as well if u could 😁
I'd say just get the best of the best: amzn.to/3sbLUys :)
@@DanRichardFishing ahh too late :( i already bought the sandisk ultra and it got delivered yesterday already
what about sandisk extreme pro?
Found this article explaining the differences: witandfolly.co/sandisk-extreme-vs-extreme-pro/
getting the samsung 8 ultra 128gb , so i need a fast micro sd card 512gb , so i guess the sandisk evo extreme pro is the one to get ??
The Sandisk Exreme Pro is my preferred card :)
@@DanRichardFishing i read the article but do u think A1 will be very slow comparimg to A2 specially when i run apps and games on my mopile phone and transfer date from the memory card to computer ????pls tell me what will be the difference
@@morganahmed6245 Will you be running the apps on your phone FROM the SD Card? I don't think people really do that anymore as there is so much storage on phones now - in fact most phones these days don't even have an SD Card slot in them. So unless you're running apps OFF the SD Card, I wouldn't worry about it.
@@DanRichardFishing yes sometimes ill run apps from the memory cards so do u think if i got the A1 ..IT WILL BE MUCH SLOWER THAN THE A2 ?or the diffrencec will not be that much ?
Has anyone used the Sandisk Extreme MicroSD 128gb (90 MB/s) card (with card adapter) in the GH5 recording 200 Mbits/s video onto it successfully ?
Which mode are you using on your gh5? The fhd all-i 200 mbps? I use exactly that microSD card on my gh5 except I record at 4K 60p 150 mbps with no issues. If you want to tell me which mode you're talking about exactly I can try it on my side.
@@DanRichardFishing Hi...im looking at recording in MP4. But no matter which mode i pick...ill never use 400 Mbp/s All INTRA. So max will be 4K 200 Mbits/s modes which equals about 25 Mbytes/s ??
So the best card out there is the SanDisk extreme?
Which memory card is best for Laptop for running softwares
Sandisk ultra or extreme?
Extreme
Hi Dan Thanks for the test it was very beautifully done. I have a question regarding Samsung evo select, I have a music player Dap and I am told to use samsung evo select to store my high-res music.I will be very glad to hear what you have to say if it really matters what card I choose for the music performance.
The Samsung would be fine, the throughputs needed for the audio are nowhere near as intense as video. And thank you for the nice comments, really appreciate it!
Hi Dan Thank you so much for your suggestion🙏🏼, I will definitely choose Samsung. Merry Christmas from Sweden.
Me: YES!
Hhaha nice!! I KNEW I couldn't be the only one!!
Hey thank you for the sub! So that's exactly what I use for my Osmo Action camera on my boat, 2 x 256GB SanDisk Extremes :)
Are you sure reading speeds are bottlenecking somewhere? They all kind of same.
The card reader was bottlenecking at the 89 mark for sure, there is a specific type of reader you need to get those higher ratings that Sandisk state. But the Gigastone was nowhere near those rates, so definitely an inferior product.
my man said sandisk came rocking to the party?
He did indeed sir!
I want fast for transfering from smartphone to pc and back.
My favorite is Sandisk :)
@@DanRichardFishing I ordered one it came today it looks like it's a legitimate card
Already at the beginning it's unprecise:
The tiny ones are microSD cards, the bigger ones are (normal) SD cards.
Thanks
My pleasure :)
Hope that helps!
it depends on the reader you use
Thanks I bought an 3.0 capable adapter and use through the 3.0 USB, I get higher write and read speeds, but not as SanDisk Specs
I have my SanDisk 128 gb I bought it on Official store and it was good for gaming
I bought a 512gb extreme new version card with a mentioned write speed of 130MB/s but during full card test it's just reached max upto 77MB/s.
These cards authenticities are a big problem specially for bigger ones as they are expensive too.
"up to" is something to consider, the hardware of your equipment will limit test/performance,
Bear in mind that the card can only transfer as quickly as the hardware you're using it on.
Not normal that you have so many issues :(
is your sandisk original?
How is the Evo as good as it is!? I thought A2 cards were supposed to be the kings when it came to apps (phones) or programs (computers).
You just saved me money 3 years later from posting this video. Keeping my Evo and NOT getting an A2 card. Not enough difference to matter.
You are a very fast talker
I have a lot to talk about! lol!
Im more prefer to samsung..no doubt about it
Samsung makes great gear for sure!
WTF? I have never heard of Gigastone brand before!!! 😂😂😂
Very popular off brand sold on Amazon.
@@DanRichardFishing I know but I don't live in the US lol
Что он говорит? В итоге что лучше - Самсунг или Сандиск?))
He didn't say. But from the comments he mentioned he prefers SanDisk for his gadgets. However people here also mentioned from their experiences their SanDisk were corrupted after some time. Safer bet would be to use Samsung in terms of speed and longevity imo.
Use the dark blue Samsung Evo there the fastest out of the Samsung Evo line
To whom who may not know. Speed is not only thing you should care about but reliability, thermal throttling and speed degradation over time and under heavy load. This video is very amateurish.
Great until it stops working and causes your switch to stop working
Yea you can shoot for 8 hours ….In freezing temps maybe. It will overheat 99% of the time these days
@@DanRichardFishing which GoPro model?
Looks like your card reader is the bottleneck.
Want works good with phone
I always recommend the Sandisk extremes... they never let me down.
256 or 128 doesn't matter ????? seriously it does matter !

"MICRO".....
The microformat is so common that everyone calls them SD cards now and they include the large adapter. Go to any electronics store and ask for an SD card and they'll show you the micro SDs.
