Thanks for this video. I am surprised to find out that major brands (Samsung, Sandisk, etc) sell 128gb U1 Endurance level microSD card less than $40, while many DashCam manufacturers are selling their own memory cards for more than $100. Dashcam manufacturers might be getting a lot of profit from selling microSD cards at a higher margin, just like how Inkjet printer manufacturers are selling the printer at a discounted price but their inks at a higher price. Your video is the de facto standard video that I would like to recommend to others who are looking forward to upgrading their dashcam memory capacity.

Professional driver here. Still using a Transcend Endurance 32GB card that's been used everyday for the past 2+ years, 9 hours a day on average. Upgraded my dash cam recently to the Viofo A129 Duo IR and I'm still getting 2 hours of recording loop on it! Looking forward to buying a bigger card to get more footage with my higher resolution dash cam. Thanks Andrew for the recommendations!
Just started buying the samsung endurance cards. I've had 3 transcend cards fail on me recently, they were all pretty old tho so not unexpected. I am gonna put these cards in all my family member's cars because I know they never check their dash cams so its nice to have a little more assurance that the cards will last a decent amount of time. thanks for the video.
Hey! Jon or John? They finally dropped in price so it's a good time to buy them. Should work out nicely for them. Thanks for commenting and I'm going to start doing the same. You're the most consistent dash cam reviewer! -Andrew

Besides visual improvements I'm faster now in editing because of some of the shortcuts. I will definitely watch the video and give you a comment. Keep up the good work yourself! -Andrew
After watching the 2016 video recommendation, I bought two Transcend High Endurance cards last year. While the 16GB doesn't seem to have any issues, the 64GB one stopped reading when I was in the middle of transferring video files about two months after I started using is (on a dual channel VIOFO A129); I lost all the footage that hadn't been transferred and reformatted the card. About a week later, a similar error seems to have happened while the SD card was being used on the dashcam, so it didn't record any footage. I've ditched the 64GB card and I'm reluctant to keep on using the 16GB one. I'm shopping for new SD cards, so I'll take a look at the Samsung PRO Endurance ones.
@@LamHi, Andrew! Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, as with other brands, Transcend's warranty is void if we use their cards with a dashcam. «Transcend's consumer memory cards are not for use with write-intensive applications, including but not limited to: recursive / in-car recording devices» :-(
I've confirmed it before with Transcend customer service and marketing staff that their High-Endurance cards have a warranty for dashcam use. Their online info should be updated to reflect that.
I have about a total of 20 sd cards and the majority are Samsung evo cards ranging from 32gb to 128gb. I have one sandisk a1 400gb card that I use in my sg9663dc. I purchased a 64gb Samsung high endurance card that caused severe issues with my sg9663dc, viofo a129 duo and dr750s. My 5 year old 32gb Samsung evo card that I use for firmware updates is still working perfectly. I’m now only using Samsung evo cards in my q800pro, blackvue dr750s 2ch, viofo a129 duo and viofo a119. The only exception is the sandisk a1 400gb card that I use in my sg9663dc. I still don’t see a need for an endurance card since the very first Samsung endurance card I purchased was faulty.
I think it's a matter of probabilities, temperature (high heat takes a big toll on microSD cards), manufacturing quality, actual use per day that factors into how long your card ends up lasting. I'm also recommending cards to tens of thousands of people which will make a statistical difference over time compared to individual experiences. The newer EVO cards are also made from 3D TLC NAND which helps their stability. Still aside from all those variables, from what I understand of microSD card writing that optimizing firmware so the card can write to a completely filled card is very beneficial for integrity. To each their own though, I understand your perspective. -Andrew
First I want to say that I admire you for testing cameras that you purchase and you are providing honest reveiws. Now my actual question. After my last car accident I finally got myself a dual dash camera system. I chose it from someone elses top 10 video. My choice was Falcon Eye Prime 2. Almost from the start the system was malfunctioning and I didn't notice it. It wasn't due to the memory card and the main camera was replaced because I got the extended warranty. The replacement worked ok for a short time, but because I monitored it closer I caught it not recording when it should have been. It was set for 3 minute clips. There would be many 3 minute clips back to back and then there would be many just over one minute clips with gaps as much as 43 seconds. Then it would record flawless 3 minute clips and then bach to just over a minute. I'm told its the memory card. They really don't want to send me another camera. They are sending me a free memory card to try. How long should a memory card last before it should be replaced? Is there a better dual system that cost no more than 200 dollars that you recommend? Thanks
Hey RB, glad I could help. Memory card lifespan is tricky, it's more like an average so its tough to say when it'll fail. Overall a cheaper non-endurance card will fail much faster and it could be in a matter of days to months depending on its construction, temperature ,etc. I'm a fan of the Viofo A129 for most people. I've promoted Viofo quite a bit but I haven't seen another system that provides all the benefits and features of Viofo. As an alternative Rexing's V1P 3rd generation in the United States is similar with better customer service system. -Andrew
Just wanted to say that at 6:02 screen shot there is a recommendation for Transcend 400x, I have one of those in 128gb that I ran without issue in a daily driver (one channel 1080p Street Guardian) for 3.5 years. Got several years no problems from Samsgun plus and select, both, also. Guess I'm lucky but I have many 2-3 years-of-use cards and didn't buy an endurance card for the first time till last week
The Samsung Pro Endurance spec sheet states that its a MLC product. However, its Samsung marketing team's strategy trying to make their product better. THe Samsung Pro Endurance uses, in fact, TLC (which technically is still a MLC, just like saying a square is a type of rectangle). many of Samsung's product such as the 970 evo/plus spec sheet states it uses MLC, but has been proven to be TLC. Hopefully this comment will be noticed so you wont be bashed on by other people because of MLC/TLC confusion.
Edit: See below, Samsung has previously labeled their products as "3-bit MLC" which doesn't exist but can warp consumer comparisons. Samsung has not stated if the pro endurance is "2-bit MLC (real) or "3-bit MLC (fake, actually TLC). How confusing and disingenuous. Prior Response: Can you link me on where Samsung says the Pro Endurance is a TLC product? That analogy of saying TLC is MLC is wrong, it doesn't make any sense. I'm not getting bashed on by any people at all. I've done some really intense research to make the video. I appreciate the feedback though. Please let me know if I am wrong. -Andrew
@@Lam dashcamtalk.com/forum/threads/samsung-pro-endurance-high-endurance-micro-sd-cards.34110/ www.extremetech.com/computing/268254-samsung-launches-new-970-evo-and-970-pro-ssds quote from one of the comment: "MLC (Multi-level cell) does not always explicitly mean 2-bit cell. While we do have unique terms and identifiers for 3-bit and 4-bit multi level cells, meaning MLC can sometimes be used to specifically refer to 2-bit cells, it is not a strict convention."
Thanks for the link. I saw that thread too but the thread was never posted. I trust Samsung's release a lot more versus some random rep (unless it's a staff member that I can take more seriously) news.samsung.com/global/video-5-years-vs-3-months-samsungs-new-pro-endurance-memory-cards where it states it's made from 64-layer 256GB MLC NAND. Also I just your comment about evo/plus having MLC specs. I haven't read that anywhere. In fact besides the higher capacity (256GB+) cards they don't even talk about its NAND construction at all. -Andrew
The problem is that Samsung defines MLC differently from others. Many of their storage product such as the 860 evo or 970 evo, they tend to use the term 3-bit MLC (which is just TLC NAND). The article from Samsung Newroom can actaully be "3-bit" MLC NAND
@@tchsiung9479 I just deleted my prior reply, I see your point. Samsung's Pro Endurance may be "3-bit MLC". Interesting, and makes sense from a cost point of view. That's actually really annoying and I appreciate you bringing that up. My recommendations won't change but the technical details will.
Lexar High Performance 633x (A1, UHS-I, V30 Made-in-Taiwan) works perfectly with Thinkware F800PRO where Sandisk Extreme failed with multiply self-restarting between recording of continuous drive and parking modes by dashcam. Sandisk High Endurance (UHS-I V30 64GB) recording works but experienced occasional self-restarting of driving mode from parking state.
for dual cameras, especially 4k, + parking mode, there needs to be higher capacity, affordable high endurance cards. the recommended card is low for my setup.
According to there website there 256GB pro endurance is 140,160 hours of 1080p 3.25MB/s recording (which is 16 years) with each lower version 1/2 that so 32GB is 2 years worth .
Great video! Very informative! Although I knew that micro sd cards fail with time, didn't realise that these endurance ones exist with MLC cells. Unfortunately, the 128GB Samsung Endurance costs 50 euros in my country at the moment... I 'm gonna go with the 128GB Samsung Evo Plus at 17 euros since even if it's starts acting up in a year or two, I can just buy another one and still I will have paid less.
Wonderful video, and very informative. Thank you, I'm now setting my sights on the Samsung Pro Endurance 32 GB or the Sandisk High Endurance 32 GB, whichever is cheaper.
Another great video Andrew. 4 years since update. Anything new? Also, what's your recommendation on reformatting dash cam cards every few months? Does reformatting cause premature wear?
Great Video, Can you recommend the ScanDisk High Endurance 256 for the Blackview DR900S to use an a daily base? Or is it better to take a Samsung Pro Endurance 128GB - it is more or less the same price but half of capacity! Thanks.
Looks like that product just launched - very interesting! Competitive with the Pro Endurance assuming the compatibility is good with dash cams. I'll have to review it and check it out.

Q#1- this back Friday, now into Cyber Monday specials abound, I’m considering the Rove 4K Stealth, it’s 25% off at $149, I can’t discover if this has a battery or capacitor, do you know? Q#2- The Rove 4K Stealth, can accommodate up to a 512k micro sd card, Rove recommends the Samsung EVO. There are different styles of the EVO, what would you suggest for a style?
Hey Chris, thanks! So at $150 it is the cheapest true 4K camera I've seen. It uses the same sensor (Omnivision OS08A10) as the Blackvue DR900S. It uses a battery as I checked the Amazon sales page where they are required to disclose if it has a lithium battery or not. I would use the EVO Plus (no + symbol) or the EVO Select. The Select and Plus are hte same, only the Select is the only version sold on Amazon directly (it's an exclusive). There's no other EVO versions being sold.
Car Cam Central - Thanks for informative reply! According to a reply from a Rove customer service agent, they ONLY recommend using the 512k card from Samsung. On their comments section a “ poster “ said “ Only use Sandisk “ as other cards will error out. Upon asking Rove, the “ poster “ posted false information in an attempt to drive sales to Sandisk. Rove ONLY recommended the Samsung cards for 4K use. I hope this clears up any mis-Information being put out there by mischievous people. Please do a review of the Rove 4K Stealth! For the money ($149.99), the features, and camera quality, plus the app, appear unbeatable this 2019 Holiday season. I bought one of sd card 64gb but on the dash cam nextbase duo is showing format sd card what is the problem 🤔 do i need to format in to the computer because the dash cam does not format it 🤔 can someone help
There should be an option to format it inside the menu, you might have to press the menu button twice or contact the manufacturer to figure out how. In all my years of using dash cams I haven't seen one that doesn't format. However, I'll be at slim you could have a SD card that didn't work out of the box
I don't see any advantages in using an SSD for parked recording. The reliability is about the same, the only major difference is the performance which doesn't matter for dash cams. A microSD card also costs 3-4X less money.

Looking forward to buying a bigger card to get more footage with my higher resolution dash cam. Thanks Andrew for the recommendations!
Awesome - glad I could help! The A129 DUO uses a ton of space.
-Andrew
The work and research you have put in to make this video is commendable! Loved your content. Thank you.
Thank you!
-Andrew
@@Lam I do go by Jon but I don't mind everyone types John haha. I appreciate the complement, I like watching your vids for how detailed you go into so many topics like memory card choices. Been trying to up my production a bit, but since i started this as a hobby and no video editing experience its a learning experience. If you get a chance to watch my new Q800 Pro review lemme know what you think, keep up the good work!
Hey Jon =) Production values takes a big investment in time. I used Lynda to learn Premiere which helped out a lot. Recently I spent a big chunk of time learning Illustrator and After Effects. Besides visual improvements I'm faster now in editing because of some of the shortcuts. I will definitely watch the video and give you a comment. Keep up the good work yourself!

Fantastic video. Informative and complete; covers all the important stuff with just the right amount of detail. Nice animations, too. Thank you!
Thanks Carpet! Glad I Could help!
I would do a warranty exchange on the Transcend 64GB card. Samsung Pro Endurance cards are great.
-Andrew
@@LamHi, Andrew! Thanks for the suggestion.
Unfortunately, as with other brands, Transcend's warranty is void if we use their cards with a dashcam.

Here's the link:

I've confirmed it before with Transcend customer service and marketing staff that their High-Endurance cards have a warranty for dashcam use. Their online info should be updated to reflect that.
@@Lam That's some good news :-)
I'll contact them and see how I can send them my defective card.
Thanks!
Great video, and dive deep. Looking forward for the 2022 with best 512 or large size sdcard for the 4K dashcam
Thank you for this great video series, and especially for the updates!
Very professional. Covers all the important parameters. Cheers!
Thanks Leadfoot! Doing my best to provide good information.
I was waiting for this, great job
Thanks Eug! I was waiting a while for this too.

Excellent video and advice! (as always with Car Cam Central)
Thanks Mark!
-Andrew
I'm here in 2020 to buy a card 1 to 2 years old because it's cheaper than when this video was launched.
I think you need to make an update video for 2020
First I want to say that I admire you for testing cameras that you purchase and you are providing honest reveiws.
-Andrew
Thank you very much Andrew. I will look through your videos to find reviews of the camera systems you mentioned to me.
Another Great Video, Andrew... Keep 'em Coming...
I don't recommend Sandisk Ultra. Died after year of using in Mio MiVue C380... I'll have a try at Samsung Pro Endurance.
Hey Andrew, do you have any updated best dashcam yet?
I use the recommended 128gb Samsung Evo card in my Mini 0906 dual dashcam. Never had an issue with it 👌
The Samsung Pro Endurance spec sheet states that its a MLC product.

@@Lam dashcamtalk.com/forum/threads/samsung-pro-endurance-high-endurance-micro-sd-cards.34110/
www.extremetech.com/computing/268254-samsung-launches-new-970-evo-and-970-pro-ssds
quote from one of the comment: "MLC (Multi-level cell) does not always explicitly mean 2-bit cell.
Thank you! 2021 gang
Andrew. Can you do an update for 2022?
Thank you for such an amazing review!!!!
these also apply to pretty much any camera out there. great job andrew !
You're welcome again! Thanks.
Lexar High Performance 633x (A1, UHS-I, V30 Made-in-Taiwan) works perfectly with Thinkware F800PRO where Sandisk Extreme failed with multiply self-restarting between recording of continuous drive and parking modes by dashcam.
Sandisk High Endurance (UHS-I V30 64GB) recording works but experienced occasional self-restarting of driving mode from parking state.
extremely helpful! excellent job!
Thanks Hetti!
Can you do a 2025 update?
for dual cameras, especially 4k, + parking mode, there needs to be higher capacity, affordable high endurance cards. the recommended card is low for my setup.
128GB should be enough unless you have space saving features disabled. There are 256GB cards but the compatibility hasn't been confirmed yet.
-Andrew
According to there website there 256GB pro endurance is 140,160 hours of 1080p 3.25MB/s recording (which is 16 years) with each lower version 1/2 that so 32GB is 2 years worth .
Such a great video review! Thank you!
Brain hurts from all the info. But glad I watched it.
There's quite a bit and already quite a bit simplified and condensed from the information I had to go through. Glad it helped.

ok so what is the best size and card for 2022?
Great video! Very helpful for card selection.
Thanks Yiheng! Glad to help.

as someone who has had problems with corrupt data on phones…i only consider endurance cards now
do you have updates for holidays 2021 for a garmin 57. I hear you have to have Fat 32 for bigger then 16gb. what does that mean?
Then why to use for my m50 camera i use 1080 60 fps and iam transfer my data to phone
Invaluable info. Thanks!
update video for 2020?
Thank you so much for your videos, I learned so much!!
You're welcome! Thank you!
I hope Samsung Pro Endurance releases a 256GB version. :(
I hope so too! Sandisk's 256GB high endurance card is looking good for the price.
Wonderful video, and very informative. Thank you, I'm now setting my sights on the Samsung Pro Endurance 32 GB or the Sandisk High Endurance 32 GB, whichever is cheaper.
Awesome! Glad it helped. It'll likely be one or two dollars apart. if that's the case definitely get Samsung.
-Andrew
Very good presentation & updated info
how about a 256gb card for dual 4k dashcam?
How many times can a micro SD card be formatted or reformatted?
Another great video Andrew. 4 years since update. Anything new? Also, what's your recommendation on reformatting dash cam cards every few months? Does reformatting cause premature wear?
High Endurance and Max Endurance for Sandisk are both SUPER hard to come by??! and are now requiring business inquery?
Awesome review, thanks for the sharing!
Thank you!
Does a thinkware 800 dash camera need a thinkware SD CARD. I have one and bought a sand disk and is not taking it.
No but Thinkware can be picky. I probably would go with a Samsung card. The EVO plus has worked well for Thinkware owners.
Great Video, Can you recommend the ScanDisk High Endurance 256 for the Blackview DR900S to use an a daily base? Or is it better to take a Samsung Pro Endurance 128GB - it is more or less the same price but half of capacity! Thanks.
get the sandisk max endurance, works great with my dr900s.
Always good info'. We will always need it. Thanks Andrew!
Great info that helped out a lot!
Glad I could help Matt!
I have been using a Lexar 633x by 3+ years without problems in my dash cam
What USB adapter would you recommend with using the Samsung's Pro Endurance SD card?
In a Tesla it needs to be connected to a USB-A In a glove box.
How about the sandisk Max endurance microsd card??
Looks like that product just launched - very interesting! Competitive with the Pro Endurance assuming the compatibility is good with dash cams. I'll have to review it and check it out.
please do thanks!
What is the recommended micro SD to use in a Vantrue N2s if you don't want to use Vantures recommended brand?
what is the best card today 2022? i bought a 64 gb to find out i lost fotage from 8 hours ago it recorded over it.
it appears my garmin 57 can go. to 512 and give 2 days record time.I don't see any cards that are 256 -512 in your list is there a reason why?
I think its good advice to buy two cards. I just bought two Samsung cards. Thank you.
The bottom line is High endurance cards are perfectly designed for dash cams and it will serve you for many years despite the high price tag.

I would like to know what's the best micro sd, for a redtiger F7N dash cam. I appreciate your feedback!. Thank you!.
Wish I saw this video earlier, but I blindly got the samsung pro endurance U1 anyway for dash cam.
For a Tesla people can both use an SSD or a micro SD, which one do you recommend? physical space is no issue in a tesla so both can be used.
I don't see any advantages in using an SSD for parked recording. The reliability is about the same, the only major difference is the performance which doesn't matter for dash cams. A microSD card also costs 3-4X less money.
@@Lam Thanks! In the Netherlands SSD's are less expensive so I went with that.
is the samsung pro endurance still mlc or did they switch to TLC ?
