Worth noting Nimona didn't really do a lot of damage to the city, at least not intentionally. She didn't even really fight back against the people that were trying to hurt her. She had the goal of dying on Gloreth's sword, and wasn't really interested in any destruction beyond that. In fact, the knights did far more damage to the city in trying to stop Nimona than Nimona ever did.

I was honestly shocked at the fact that she was actually going to take her own life just like that. I mean, she even said she was already willing to do that, but still, very depressing to see. We rarely see animation take a shot at a serious topic like this and for good reason. It’s a controversial topic, but it’s also a real life issue that thousands go through every day. Also, after the credits, I like that there is a website that helps those dealing with depression.

    • @null0byte
      @null0byte 9 месяцев назад +4

      "It’s a controversial topic..."
It's only a controversial topic because people insist on making it so. If anyone is at all confused as to why "someone who is, 'different' than those around them might want to "unalive" themselves," they might want to take a good long look in the mirror and think about how they treat those who are not like them.
It's "controversial" because certain people cannot fathom other people being "not like them."
(and in before all the christians, muslims, ETC (aka, way too "religious") who want to equate everything their religion hates with that which really does harm their fellow humans like murderers, pedophiles, you-name-it-that-actively-hurts-humans, no, I am talking about people who are literally just trying to live their lives authentically and non-predatory. The fact I have to literally specify this $#@! tells the world just what kind of individuals *you* are. So check yourself in 10 mirrors and if it don't apply, let it fly. And, if you do not like that I'm calling out your XYZ religion on this, take a fantastically good long look in another 10 mirrors and maybe consider being the change yourself and calling out your fellow religious adherents LOUDLY for literally ignoring the foundational tenants of said religion.)

The scene where Nimona was ready to accept her death through being impaled by the heart, I almost teared up because that’s a real life issue.
We become so blinded with hate towards ourselves by what people say that we don’t know what to do with ourselves. We question ourselves.
Nimona saw how terrified everyone was to her, she knew what she was. So she decided to do it herself. Until Ballister stoped her as a sign of hope and love that she never had growing up.
That scene alone almost got me. This movie is truly amazing.

All she wanted was to be accepted, by anyone, or anything; rejection after rejection beats on you to point where you are ready to give up...

I can relate similarly, as someone who is gay and struggled with depression. I meet people and make friends and everything's great until they found out I'm gay. Then the same people who "enjoyed hanging out with me" are now are uncomfortable with it and don't want to be friends. That hurts so much, I've never related to a character so much in my life. Nimona will always hold a very special place in my heart.💖

The thing that I kinda find interesting...
Nimona has no "true" form or persona, or at least that is what is implied. She is over a thousand years old. Perhaps thousands of years old, and is clearly a being of incredible power. And yet, consistently, she depicts her self as child when she is trying to just... form a bond with someone, and even in her more mature form, I would guess maybe about 14 or so, this is still her primary goal.
Why does she want to be a "villain's sidekick". Well. She's been rejected by all the "good guys", all the "normies"... so why not? If she's gonna be treated like the bad guy, maybe that's where she fits in.
A being like Nimona, it would be so easy... SO easy, to focus on her age, and her experiences, and focus on her thousands of years of knowledge, and wisdom, you could even imagine a character *like* Nimona infiltrating and taking over from the inside. You could not just depict Nimona as the bad guy, a real actual monster, you could depict her as a sort of lovecraftian horror, a shapeless entity that turns people against each other seeking to collapse civilization into ruin...
And she could. She could choose to do TERRIBLE harm... And yet.......... Her real self, the self she chooses... Is just a scared little girl, who doesn't know what she is, or where she belongs, and just wants someone to look at her and see something that is not just worthy, but deserving of love, exactly as she is. (and I go with she her pronouns because she answers to them in the movie and she would absolutely correct it if they were not acceptable to her)
As the meme goes, she could have been anything she wanted. She became something small and exposed hoping that someone would love her instead of hurt her. Time. After time. After time. And then she thought she had finally found that, found someone who cared. And it was torn away from her. And that was the moment she became actually dangerous... Not necessarily to others... She endangered others, having been driven to indifference. But the only person she actually intended to hurt was her self.
She didn't need wealth, or power, or admiration, or worship, all she needed was for someone who saw her for everything that she was, and still want her.
Nimona may be thousands of years old. But at her core she is just a child looking for someone to love her. And I think that is beautiful.

The kingdom/the Institute crafted the narrative of "monsters and horrors beyond the wall", shifting the blame for all major problems on anything different or "other". The walls weren't meant to protect from outside threats, they were meant to trap everyone inside a literal and metaphorical cage. I'm sure there are other fantastical creatures and such beyond the walls, but I think the movie ended well.

@@RoastyRoachythe problem is, the fact that movies like Minions succed is the same reason most movies like Nimona, unfortunately, fail.
Not every movie has to teach you something or help your life; Sometimes a movie can just be 1 hour and 30 minutes of lighthearted fun and energy, like the (new) Super Mario Bros. movie.
But it's important that movies like Nimona are seen by children, because it'll prepare them for the world.
Yes, they will see death and violence, they will see depression and suicide, they will see gay or trans people, and some will even be gay or trans.
But most parents don't want that.
They want their children to not be educated, because ignorance is bliss in their eyes.
They only want their children to see movies like Minions, the Emoji Movie and any other non-Mario related schlock that Illumination puts out, where everything is sunshine and rainbows and everything is lovey-dovey and shit.
If I had stuff like The Owl House or Nimona as a kid, it would have been much simpler for me to accept myself for who I am.
I thought I was broken, and suffered a lot.
And believe me, there were some brilliant movies out there, like Ghibli movies, for example, but I didn't know they even existed until my early teens.
In conclusion, fuck Minions, go watch Nimona.

I have to admit other movies have gut-punched me with reveals, but Nimona seemed to slide a knife into my heart when we finally got Nimona's backstory/the truth about the Kingdom - it was utterly tragic, heartbreaking and I think even brought to the surface existential fears in me about who and ultimately what we are as a species... As someone who grew up a bit different there was a strong bond to Nimona as she represented my usual nature but the message behind the movie was also something that hit super close to home. After the credits pass you get a message one that made me feel seen. If you need help or someone aroind you needs help dont be afraid to ask or seek it out. Kinda felt like a suicide prevention / awareness film with its undertones and I appreciated that a lot.

This movie was good and it was refreshing to see something new. Nimona the quirky character is probably what won the audience the most, alongside perfect voicing and animation.
Juxtaposition between her rebellious nature disguised as cry for acceptance really put the message through. I feel many people could relate.
The difference between villains and heroes is that villains after experiencing trauma make the world experience the same pain they went through.
Heroes on the other hand don't want anyone else to experience the same pain - This is perfectly showcased in this movie where Nimona would rather sacrifice herself than hurt people who hate her just because they are afraid of her. Even when she became full-fledged monster everyone viewed her as, she didn't hurt a single soul. The movie was so good that LGBTQ+ parts of this movie didn't bother me at all because they fit a fantasy scenario and good story telling. Great attempt to naturalize it without forcing it down your throat at every possible moment, like most Netflix adaptations do.
I am really looking forward to Nimona 2

I've lost count of how many times I've rewatched Nimona, but it must be about 36 times. Being 62, with Asperger's Syndrome, The movie kept on hitting on more and more similarities to my life, and bringing so much of the pain back, along with understanding of the feelings I couldn't seem to put a finger on. I also really loved the subtle signs of friendship developing between Bal and Nimona. There were lots of these and some were very, very subtle. It's the kind of feeling I hope to share with someone before I pass someday. I know that there are many more viewings between now, and then. Please, no Nimona sequels. The main message that this movie taught me was that the problems that exist in our world isn't the people who are deemed as "Monsters" It's the people with closed minds who tell us all at young ages that "Different is Bad" and to never question it. Sometimes we need to stop and think for ouselves so that we can look past words people say. Because even after so much time hearing the same things, sometimes... we're wrong.

And vilify her and the director like Nimona was vilified? Is there anything else magical in the world besides Nimona? Did Gloreth ever feel remorse for what she did. Are there no other people in the entire world?! Did the guards on the wall ever wonder why they hadn't seen any monsters in a thousand years? Where is that enormous walled city getting its resources? How many years after The Rumbling does this take place?
    Enquiring minds want to know!

I have made a few other comments singing the praises of Nimona and exploring her feelings and identity as a person. Most of which have gotten quite a few up votes... But I wanted to explore a darker side to this character who I am absolutely in love with.
In previous comments I explored how Nimona wants to fit in, to be accepted, to find a safe place where she belongs. Tried being a good guy, tried being a friend, a child, an animal, no where seems to want her, so she decided to try being a villain right? But I decided to take a different look at it, examine for different motivations.
So... Of all the villains she could have paired up with in a modern city like that. She chose Ballister. Seeing the news report of the queen's murder and him being on the run. "He's perfect!" she says, grinning. A murderer. A political assassin. The killer of one of the most loved people in their entire civilization. Not a mob boss, not a small time criminal, not a "resistance organization" (you know what I mean) using asymetrical tactics to try to force social change..
No. She chooses to go be friends with a cold blooded murderer? *shakes her head* Doesn't feel like Nimona, and remember, at this point, she does not know that he is innocent. It is easy, if he were innocent, to see why Nimona would want to be like "yeah a kindred spirit I can hang with!", but she doesn't know that he's innocent when they first meet.
One could infer that she did not track him down to make friends.
"In this city, all you have to do to be the hero is point a sword at a monster." that isn't an exact quote but you get it. "You kill the monster, you're the good guy by default, no matter what else, you are the hero if you slay the monster."
She may have been tracking down Ballister to capture or kill him. Is there any greater monster than he who slew the beloved queen? Who ever brought him to justice would have to be called a hero. Right?
Except she gets there, and things aren't... right. She doesn't find a vicious killer in a prepared safehouse, she finds a man who's eyes are full of panic and grief. And his hideaway is... gross, oh look, a wall full of photos, these must be his other targets right?... No... They aren't... Crap. He's innocent. Damn it all he's innocent.
Now. I prefer my other views generally.. But consider if you will.. Nimona tracks down a monster, her last best hope of being accepted in this society that has shown her nothing but cruelty..Ready to capture or kill if need be. And... He's just some guy caught up in the awfulness of the land he lives in. She could turn him in, be seen as the hero. And instead she abandons her original plans like dismissing a bad dream. And she immediately begins helping him because... Well. Because she can actually protect him, and right here, right now, he needs her, monster or not, he needs her.
Imagine that. Your only hope to ever be loved is if you do this thing, but you find out that doing that would make you an awful person... A monster. And you just throw it all away to do the right thing.
