Elle Fanning also looked so good at the Met Gala this year! The exhibition was loosely themed after Sleeping Beauty which inspired me to make this video 🩷 which live-action princess dress is your favourite?
There is a difference between FAIRY TALE aesthetic and FANTASY aesthetic. The fairy tale aesthetic is something akin to cottagecore - homey, cozy and picturesque. A great example of this is of course _Cinderella_ (2015) The film is low fantasy as opposed to Maleficent's high fantasy, so realism and believability were prioritised more. A film whose visuals are more akin to fantasy than fairy tale is the French film _Beauty and the Beast_ (2014). From the architecture to the outfit designs, the world looks like a fantasy-inspired alien world, almost like an anime isekai.
Also the green dress she wore to the premiere of mistress of evil. One of my fav themed gowns ever, she had a “pricked finger” and blood drops to reference. Ugh so pretty
such a good point! i love how Sandy Powell (Cinderella's costumer designer) approached this. She knew the dress would be made for toys but didn't let that change how grand it was for film. she basically said it was up to the toymakers to adapt it AFTER, rather than trying to fit a toy mold BEFORE
...now you're reminding me of how immersion-breaking Elsa's outfit in Frozen 2 was for me. It's like, yes, you _did_ plan this entire Nokk scene around what you could plausibly choreograph for Frozen 2 on Ice.
Elle and Naomi Scott are like the ONLY actresses who didn't parrot the Disney-fringe-Buzzfeed-princess propaganda crap. Lily talked positively about Cinderella but also has parroted the propaganda at different points. Elle and Naomi I have seen ONLY talk positively about the old princesses and say that being a girly "damsel" is just as valid as being a strong tomboy, and questioning why in order to be a "good influence" and a "real" woman, you have to be as masculine as possible ironically, and to be strong you have to be violent and give people attitude. Yet a man can be girly and weak and its suddenly okay. He gets mocked for being "gay" but nobody seriously thinks he's a bad influence or that he's unworthy, but women wwnt to put other women down. Under the guise of "women who like love, princesses, damsels, and dresses are buying into MAN propaganda and the PaTrIArChY" they tell girls "be like a man. Be basically a boy with boobs and a vaj instead of a dick"
Elle Fanning as Aurora is my favorite thing about the “Maleficent” franchise. I’m not a big fan of the films, but I love how she portrays Aurora’s personality. Definitely one of the most underrated live-action princess roles, in my opinion.
Exactly! When I was a child, I was always super picky about these actresses because they were supposed to be "the fairest of all" in all these movies, but the cartoon bar was (and pretty much is) just unreachable high. But Aurora was so authentically _beautiful_ on her almost ethereal joy and personality, that I just didn't mind. I thought she was pretty because of that. Same goes for Cinderela and why I DON'T really like Emma Watson as Belle
@@fairyfarms True. I also forgot that my other favorite character or favorite part in the movie was Maleficent’s crow sidekick. I really love birds, so naturally, I have a bias for the crow as well. 😄
Funnily enough, Live Action Cinderella’s dress is how I would have like to imagine Belle’s dress to be. The same extravagant layering of fabric to give the puffy look. Except of course the yellow colouring, and more going to silk/satin instead of the tuille.
Yes literally that should be Bella live action movie dress but yellow gold. I was so mad with what they did with this dress in Beauty and the Beast live action movie. I LOVE Belle animated dress. It was my favorite from all princess dresses when I was a little girl and they ruined it.
I can so agree!! Now I can see why it wasn’t giving Cinderella to me and it was because of the top of the dress, oh I can easily imagine it yellow shining gold with a few scattered red roses and Bella’s hair in that half bun hairstyle with silk pale yellow gloves (I ADORED Bella’s dress as a kid and had one birthday party where I dressed as her and kept the tiny gold tiara and cheap gloves I wore because of how pretty they looked even for a cheap costume, just the gloves are so iconic to me of her)
They probably couldn't make it as full, because all of those layers are heavy and rely on Emma Watson to wear a corset as an anchor point to handle that weight. Emma who never should have been belle for like ten thousand reasons (one being that she cant sing, thats a really great video essay on yt as well).
@@alize0m0._.4 I just had to compare the dresses again after your comment, and you are so right on that too. Cinderella’s original animated dress has a low round neckline, and puffy sleeves. Cinderella in Live Action, she doesn’t have ‘true’ sleeves, as her top falls off the shoulder. Bell on the Other hand, or original dress top falls off her shoulder. Emma Watson’s Belle appeared to have a box neckline. And even though she didn’t have puffy sleeves, she still had them. It now makes me wonder what it would look like if they just switch the tops. I guarantee such a little detail might even hold a good visual impact.
also worth mentioning that it doesn’t matter “what belle would wear or wouldn’t wear” when it comes to the gold ballgown. it’s an old enchanted castle, the wardrobe would have pulled out whatever was elegant and available for her to wear, not have it custom to her. at least, in the animation. it’s not believable that this castle would have a dress so cheap and modern looking
I prefer to believe that since the wardrobe was a transformed person, and therefor magical, that the dress too was magical. It seems like fairytale logic to me anyway. And of course something magical would be fantastical and grand. Certainly not cheep looking. Though I think it could look a bit out of time, as long as it was suitably impressive.
@@MissCaraMint what if it was what Madame "Bigmouth" Garderrobe was working on for some reason before the Beast got everyone cursed? I mean if she's the castle fashionista it would make sense she probably made the golden gown...and couldn't shut up about how one day the new princess would wear it...to Babette and Angelique's annoyance.
Yes yes yes! i would also like to think belle would embrace a more fashionable and luxurious gown from her time period as she’s embracing this life in a castle with the beast. She doesn’t leave until she learns her father is in trouble. she’s living in a castle with a prince and magical beings she needs a princess gown!
I never /noticed/ the costumes in Maleficent 1 and I mean that as the highest compliment. I was never distracted. The costumes look absolutely like they belong in this fantasy world and every character seems to wear things that make sense to the character. The whole scenery, including the clothes, are part of a beautiful painting. Love the movie.
Aladdin's costumes were SO beyond disappointing. Take any random guest at a South Asian wedding, and I guarantee you that their outfit will completely blow Jasmine's out of the water. And have you seen the bridal couture? All Disney had to do was hire an Indian or Pakistani designer to get the most gorgeous and intricate gowns for their female lead. Even if they simply went shopping around, they'd be spoiled for choice with all the stunning textiles available in your average mall or marketplace in Bangladesh, where much of the world's clothing is produced. It's a crying shame most Westerners don't realize how Halloween-y the costumes actually look to people who belong to the cultures Aladdin is appropriating. They'll give it a pass because Belle's gown was so lackluster, but Jasmine's outfits and dance sequence are equally as laughable imo. If you don't believe me, look up a few Bollywood film scenes and see what the actresses are wearing. You'll be floored by the difference.
i totally agree! i actually talked about Jasmine's dresses more in my Cinderella video and showed South Asian wedding dresses as inspiration. her outfits are missing so much detail and intricacy :(
also, i think the original Aladdin was set on Arabia and ig the Disney animated film was a combo of the two which makes me even MORE disappointed CUZ LOOK AT THE AMOUNT OF CLOTHING OPTIONS THE HAD. I doubt that Arabian dresses are any less slay than an average desi bride's (well at least of a PRINCESS from the time period).
completely agree, im south asian and seeing the live action was so disappointing as someone who grew up watching and still watches bollywood films, heck even the outifts rani mukerji wears in k3g and hum tum easily outdo all the costumes in Aladdin live action combined
I like Belle’s wedding dress, it was the only dress she wore that I actually liked. The pattern on the dress was there for a reason, I can’t recall what though. Cinderella’s wedding dress is my favorite live action dress because it looks so much like her animated wedding dress, but with more details.
i love Cinderella's wedding dress. all the flowers were actually hand-painted. and they had to make it twice because the first dress caught on fire. makes me doubly appreciate it !
@@artatmidnight The articles of clothing from _Cinderella_ are a mishmash from different decades of the 19th century, with the stepfamily being designed after the 1940s and 50s. And I love that the clothing is designed in such a way that it is believable that all these clothing items can exist at the same time. Cinderella's wedding dress might look like the only modern article of clothing in the film, but the silhouette won't look out of place in the 1890s, and the dress design fits with the movie seamlessly anyway.
I love this video but I wanted to touch up on the corset part of the video. During the Rococo period (assuming that Beauty and the Beast took place before the French Revolution), women would wear a precursor to corsets called, stays. Every women during that time wore stays whether you were poor or rich. But the basic function of a corset or stays were to support and shape a woman's figure, basically, they were bras, because the modern bra were not invented, until the 1910s. So for the woman who are against corsets, you are against tight-lacing which is a different thing that wealthy women did, not the working class. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
@@tt-xf2nr I recommend going to a historical fashion youtuber named Bernadette Banner because she does often talk about the misconceptions that modern day audiences have with corsets.
Adding to this - stays and corsets were FUNCTIONAL undergarments, both holding up/in the bosom and supporting the weight of the skirts and petticoats. They made the clothing on top MORE comfortable to wear, and also there was always a breathable linen layer between it and your skin to help keep both yourself and your garments clean. People made beds, swept floors, cooked food, chased children, played tennis, rode horses, and more, all while wearing boned undergarments.
100% agree about Belle's ball gown feeling lazy and modern. Ive also been team Cinderella 2015 for a long time, I think Aurora had good moments but with Cinderella it was just show stopper after show stopper. The green dress cate blanchet wears? Perfection. I really wish they'd honored Philip with the same care they gave Kit, like how they put the pops or blue near his face so his eyes popped. I think that would have helped Philip be more visually interesting at least.
I loved how they let Kit love his father and actually listen to him when it was needed. Just a very good Cinderella movie in all! (there are other good ones, but i like this one :D)
@@cofffee817 yes! Much needed character development for kit and it shows he's a good listener and that he matches her kindness, furthering the idea they belong together. It's a chefs kiss from me!
I do love how Aurora is the type of person who would feel more at home in a simple white nightgown compared to the stiff over-layered artificial gowns Nightgowns make her feel very ghost/spirit-like and often like a white-forest witch
I wish more live action movies were reimagined adaptations of old animations (like Maleficent), not just a blind remake. Even in Cinderella (2015) we got to see more of other characters' perspectives rather just Cinderella's. This is the only way I see how this format can work.
@@Tsukiakari-qb3tkI do question why they made her like dogs so much though. Like how did she go from having multiple dogs/saving dogs from her mother to having no problem with potentially skinning dogs to make coats?
Cinderella's visuals had a great mixture of bright, drab, vibrant, desaturated, light, and dark colors that makes each frame believable. The mid shot scenes of Cinderella and the prince dancing are so visually gorgeous with their color and lighting variety. And the outside neutral lighting during their wedding in winter looks so much better than it would have been with a bright sun shining on them. If you look at the ballroom scene at the end of _Beauty and the Beast_ the colors and lighting makes it look rather artificial and cartoonish. Everything looks so samey and almost bland.
Cinderella’s dress is my favorite out of all but unpopular opinion, I loved Belle’s ballroom dress! Simple but fits just alright and well in with the scene
It was my least fav lol, my fav is Alice in wonderland live action cause I loved the story of Alice in wonderland but the animated version scared me too much
I actually like the general idea of peasant dresses that can be worn several ways for visual interest, if we’re trying to suggest that a character doesn’t own many changes of clothes so she chooses the ones she has with ingenuity, but yeah, as soon as we go to a castle or a magical land, gimme costume changes! Why doesn’t Disney understand how much I like costume changes??
Just fyi: Belle’s final white dress isn’t a wedding dress, it’s her “celebration” dress. It’s the same case with Ariel’s final white/pink ruffle dress - it’s marketed as the “celebration” dress. The visual of the white dress and a large gathering implies a wedding ceremony but Disney likes to address stupid criticism in their live actions like “the princesses marry too soon” (even when there’s never any explicit indication they do) so they get to close on a white dress without getting slammed for being a bad influence. The consequence of this is that people will interpret these half-assed white dresses as bridal dresses (as you do here) and so it hurts the audience’s perception of the costuming as a whole by closing on it. Ideally the final look in a fairytale should be one that is memorable and grand, showing a character in their most self-actualized state and setting the tone for their happily ever after. But taking advantage of the visual language of a wedding, the easiest/most effective route for a couple’s “happily ever after”, while not truly delivering on that can result in an underwhelming or empty conclusion. It’s a fairytale, they’re meant to end bombastically, let them get married! Fakeout weddings leave the costuming on such a lackluster note it’s so lame
wow i had no idea! that is entirely confusing. they could just have a wedding with a "3 years later" caption if they must, or at the very least, don't make a celebration dress white 😭
Just here to say that my niece had a dress that was definitely marketed as a wedding dress. It is literally called "Ariel Wedding Costume Set." It was based on Ariel's dress and included a veil, ring, and bouquet. Here is the product description: "Our little mermaid lives happily ever after with this classic wedding costume and accessories. Princess Ariel will forever become part of your world in royal bride raiment with fanciful fabrics, golden trims, a floral bouquet, headband with veil, and wedding ring." However, I can see how in the original movie it could be purposefully vague.
@@imaginefun13 The costume set you refer to is designed after the actual wedding dress Ariel wears in the animated movie (it has animated Ariel’s face on the bodice charm), but I am discussing Live Action Ariel’s final “celebration” dress along with the other Live Action dresses. The 1989 Animation is not vague whatsoever that Eric and Ariel married and had a wedding at the end; there’s a big white dress with a veil, an elevated ceremony “altar”, and a wedding cake. The Live Action movie, however, seems to be purposefully vague about this, pulling from wedding imagery (two sides uniting, a pale white/pink dress, sending off the couple to their “honeymoon”) without fully committing. The marketing for this dress is very insistent on the “celebration” description, as the official Disney Store costume explains that, with the dress, children can “recreate the scene where she celebrates with Eric.” Disney has even reached out to news and magazine outlets before to correct them that these weren’t wedding dresses, but celebration dresses.
@@ten-ze1pq and that's just sad. I mean Disney Princess even has a whole book about how Ariel & Eric planned it. They married one year after the defeat of Ursula, and Melody was likely born two years after that with the bulk of Return to the Sea taking place 14 years after the original film. I mean no way is Ariel rushing after just getting on land....or if she tried...Eric would be quick to say..."slow down ,my little Pearl" (he calls her Pearl before he learns her name in his novel of Song and Sea...and did teach her three finger-signs for Yes, No, IDK)...afterall she had to learn about the human world before they could even get married...and exchanged what she knew with Triton. There are also books+ House of Mouse that show he gave Ariel the ability to become a mermaid again whenever needed. That said if critics don't want Disney to close on weddings...they simply could have ended on Ariel's shimmering seafoam dress to show "her tail becoming seafoam and of the air" or if they couldn't do seafoam outright....do what they did when designing it in 1989...call Vanna White's wardrobe designer and see if there's anything tropical in that dressing room that would have worked.
4:54 I like it that way, it suits Elle Fanning’s lighter complexion, we need to also remember the actors natural colourings, its part of the reason why they couldn’t give Ariel (Hailey Bailey) super vibrant red hair like in the animations
When designing a character, live-action or animated, you need to model their outfit designs and coloring to go well with their natural colors, almost like no other character can pull off those outfits other than them.
I feel like a brighter darker red hair would have looked better on her colouring than the muted orangey one though. Like those dyed unnatural reds. I think it would have been more magical
i couldn’t put my finger on why i haven’t liked the recent live actions but i think you said it perfectly. they look too costume-y !! with cinderella and aurora it feels like we’re peeking into their lives, with the others it feels like they put on a play for us if that makes sense ?
There is a difference between FAIRY TALE aesthetic and FANTASY aesthetic. The fairy tale aesthetic is something akin to cottagecore - homey, cozy and picturesque. A great example of this is of course _Cinderella_ (2015) The film is low fantasy as opposed to Maleficent's high fantasy, so realism and believability were prioritised more. A film whose visuals are more akin to fantasy than fairy tale is the French film _Beauty and the Beast_ (2014). From the architecture to the outfit designs, the world looks like a fantasy-inspired alien world, almost like an anime isekai.
i'll say that when it comes to outfits for the stage (as well as makeup) - they HAVE to be much more dramatic in order to be visible! both because there's a larger distance between the audience member and actor, and because stage lights wash EVERYTHING out! so while an outfit for film or for real life may be able to have tiny intricate details, they'll just disappear on stage, which is why stage costumes often look a bit more , well, costume-y when you see them up close.
That’s what “costume-y” dresses are for, _costumes!_ not saying the creator of the video did it but I’ll never understand people who criticise stage clothing for being too ‘artificial’ because stages and musicals are the one place where it’s acceptable for them to be costumes.
Besides Cinderella, I've always adored how Alice's costumes in the first movie looked. The dress the hatter makes for her is so cute and the armor at the end feels functional *and* fashionable. (Honestly I also love the White Queen's dress, anne hathaway looks so stunning in white)
With all the magnificent Bollywood references that they could have taken, they give Jazmin (one of the prettiest princesses) really costumy outfits, even the rest of the cast, like the guard, the sultan, and Aladdin
I actually agree with you when it comes to the live action princesses, and the way the later outfits look like costume pieces. OMG Jasmine on broadway's dresses are to die for
As someone who grew up loving Beauty and the Beast, what’s frustrating about Belle is that I actually really liked dresses throughout the rest of the film. I liked their interpretation of her classic “provincial” blue dress she starts out it. I also loved the red dress and cape shown during “Something There”. I don’t even mind the final dress they have her in for the wedding sequence. Admittedly, I also miss her iconic green dress from the library scene, but everything else is pretty good for a live action adaptation….EXCEPT arguably the most important dress of the movie! It frustrates me every time I think about it!
I think the biggest thing that gets me about Belle's dress is that it is visibly made of modern manmade fibers. The drape and flutter look like cheap costume materials, and that more than the design is what makes it look cheap to me. There's a lot wrong with that dress, but the fabric just by itself makes you think cheap poly/rayon that you drag around sweating in on a Halloween. By contrast, Cinderella's dress was also made with manmade fibers, but it's not the first and most immediate thing that strikes you about that dress. It doesn't look like cheap materials. They definitely could have done better with Belle just by choosing a different fabric weight or blend of fibers.
I think the lack of corset and structure asked for a lighter dress that wouldn't squish Emma Watson entirely. What baffles me is how the costume designer took her incorrect, out of character opinions on corsets and how belle would dress up for a party and ran with it without schooling her about the importance of undergarments and telling her the purpose of the scene. The dress was supposed to be opulent and structured, as it's basically recreating the atmosphere of the palace and of what the prince grew up in, but forgot about after years living as a monster. She's doing it for him, as well as to live her Fairytale dreams. Even being an inventor in the live action, belle's still a dreamer who loves romance stories, so why wouldn't she be willing to play princess when having a date in A CASTLE? Even her changing to help her dad has the connotation of them going back to reality, where they could never be together. Not going all out for THE dress is such a disservice to the story, especially when the one we got looks so out of place designwise and moves terribly. Should've just made the wedding gown more down to earth, since it's supposed to be more "belle" to show we got to the end of the story, anyways.
I think what also makes Belle's dress worse the background characters have a distinctive French Antonette style and consistent between the male and female costumes throughout the film then you see Belles dresses and they look so out of place it's so cringe
Righhhttt???? Preach it!!! Nobody talks about aurora’s live action dresses! Like the fuck? The blue dress from maleficent mistress of evil is quite litterally the most beautiful dress i’ve ever seen 😩🩵🩷
Jasmine's outfits kind of look more like a high school musical, Ariel was done very dirt, Belle looks cheap and her wedding dress doesn't even stand out in the dance, I had to pause to even find the main characters. Cinderella was a master piece and I am in love with the iconic dress! Never thought much about Aurora as it just clicked in my mind that it was historical. My only wish would be for her iconic dress, but you did a great job pointing out why her dresses were so smart! Never thought much about her looking like she's in a night gown but I did have her dress as a night gown myself when I was kid, absolute genius!
your channel has so much importance to me !!!! you made me realize that fashion is so much more than close and it definitely helped me find who I am yet. so thank you for your videos LOVE YOUUUUU
I like belle's dress, but it is very underwhelming. aurora and cinderella's dresses are simple, elegant, and thought through. the costume designs are so beautiful
True to Aurora and Cinderella’s dresses but unpopular opinion even though Belle’s dress is underwhelming it is actually pretty and not too over the top extravagant but simple and actually works well with the scene
Emma Watson's Belle gown looks like her Hermione dress. It's so underwhelming _because_ she didn't want a corset. A corset helps relieve pressure of many heavy skirts off women's hips -- which is characteristic of even everyday wear for common folks! So, in conclusion, one item would've taken the whole dress to another level!
7:34 corsets are also extremely practical, especially for large skirts bc the corset supports the weight of all the layers instead of having them dig into your actual hips. I suspect that they couldn’t have Belle’s dress be more full bc Watson refused to corset
I used to think that Cinderella live action could use some accessories like a necklace or earrings like in her animated version. But then I remember that she prefers something simple. I mean look at what she wears at home. Nothing grand and just a simple blue dress. Also, I see her as a humble person. So thinking again, Cinderella not wearing a necklace or any other accessories in the live action is already perfect. Its simplicity is already its own luxury
Favorite Dresses: All of Auroras costumes in the second film felt like they perfectly reflected what a portrayal of Sleeping Beauty would wear in live action. Her blue costume was my personal favorite because it was so detailed and whimsical, she truly felt like one with nature. And this video made me appreciate her costumes in the first film more. I liked the variety that we got with Jasmines costumes, but I do agree they felt very cartoonish and lacked the more regal elements of it. Also I did really like her teal dress with the peacock details, that was actually my favorite one and also I don’t think her shoes got enough screen time, lol. Belles costumes were fitting for that portrayal of Belle in the film. But I personally found HER’s portrayal of Belle with more interesting costumes, imo. Belles casual costumes look like rip away pieces but I think that was the point to represent her interest in inventing like her father. I was disappointed that Belles pink dress was one of those rip away pieces, that was one of my favorites. Her yellow dress was cute, but not in that setting because she always stands out but not in the way the film likely wanted her to. She always looks like she’s in a different time period. Likely because they wanted to portray her as a modern woman, idk. The wedding dress was actually beautiful but like all of her costumes modern and out of place. Especially with 17th century France, they could’ve done soooo much, especially with the rose themes. Ariel only had 2 costumes which was very disappointing because we had all been waiting YEARS to see what Halle would look like as a proper portrayal of Ariel. For the most part I was okay with what we got but what upsets me is that we could’ve had so much more. (Especially since she’s the second live action, black Disney princess we’ve had since Brandy in 1997). But Ariel’s blue dress was actually my favorite in the movie. It looked so feminine and airy, I absolutely loved the way it flowed. Also the details on the corset that you can just barely see. But I’m pretty sure they’re coral or floral details. Also I loved that they actually did research and based the clothing and the setting in the Carribbean, it actually felt like they did their research. Cinderellas dress was THEE fantasy princess dress and still referenced to this day. Her gown is literally the gold standard for what a Disney princess dress is and it is really a shame nothing else has really lived up to it. I mean everything was just so on point to the silver details in her hair, the butterfly details on the glass slippers, the soravsky crystals in the layers of tule. Truly to die for. And yeah that’s just my opinion. I truly feel like these other or upcoming Disney Live Action princess films, because we know they’re coming anyway, should take more inspiration from Cinderella and Maleficent’s costume designs. They should be realistic and magical with new elements added to them to represent that it is an adaptation and not just a copy and paste film. Unfortunately it seems that they can’t seem to find the balance between fantasy and realism, I mean come on YOURE LITERALLY DISNEY!!!
I'll always be a little mermaid (live adaptation) fighter but the costuming definitely could've been WAYY better... especially with the water theme....such a missed opportunity especially with the casting of Halle Bailey. Take maleficent for example, instead of restricting themselves to the source material (which is really good especially the cottage "peasant" dress) they opted for "realism" in a very fashionable but still realistic sense...it's fairy-like.... VERY Gorgeous... Over the top but understated... while also realistic to a 15 year old princess from this time- youthful with the pastel colors and designs. I do still wish we got the curtain bangs and black dress but they more than make up for it.... Giving her more dresses...each being super significant to her story...also the cinematography and color grading **chef's kiss** Disney really needs to understand that their live adaptations are still fantasies and not hyper focus on making everything very ultra realistic.... Because realism can be cool, fun and grounded... Though When your adapting a FAIRYTALE...it can also be boring, dull, lifeless and very restricting. I hope moving forward they learn to appreciate the detachment from reality, the vibrant colors, elaborate and intricacies to each story they are adapting...and ALSO not every story needs a live version... And if you are going to do it... please please really COMMIT and go crazy and create a story worth the original material. Also thanks for yet another stellar video... I would love to see a video on the actual cartoon versions as well..
omg you have NO idea how relieving it feels to know there’s somebody out there that appreciates the Maleficent movie as much as I do. Personally i’m not a fan of the sequel for many reasons that i could write an essay about- but to put it simply: it lacked the depth of passionate storytelling that the first one had, both in the writing department and direction. So it was nice to hear how you pointed out the first movie’s superiority over the sequel regarding how it looked more cinematic and the costume designs for the non-main characters were treated with the same level of attention to detail as the main cast (plus a whole lot more reasons that weren’t touched upon bc it’s not the focus of your video LOL!) As a fellow huge Maleficent fan, thank you for taking the time to appreciate these movies :}
Elle Fanning even outside of her films is such an underrated fashion girly. With her, Lupita Nyong’o, and Anya Taylor Joy, Dior really knows how to style celebrities.
Honestly Ariel was a princess, why does she wear peasant dresses? And her father had literally magic, he could make an amazing dress for her instead of sending her naked out of the water, contrary to the animation. In the animation I liked so much seeing how the dress the father gave her was so much more beautiful than any of the ones she wore before, I thought it represented what it means to hide your identity and look average vs coming out like a real princess and the father's blessing.
I LOVED the dress Ariel's fathers gave her in the animated version I felt it truly showed his love for his daughter. He could have given her easily given her her simple blue dress, but instead, he gave her a beautiful gown that also in a way represented her as a princess of the sea
Maybe Ariel prefers peasant casuals? Sidenote 1: Remember the iconic Seafoam Dress from 1989 isn't really a princess dress either. It's literally *a* er rather *The game show hostess* dress...and they probably didn't feel like looking at the Beach Weeks on Wheel of Fortune catalogues for Little Mermaid for Halle's adaptation...and no that's not a knock against Vanna....far from it since almost everyone prefers Ariel to wear that dress and from 1985-2009 Wheel was at an all time high in popularity (and from 1986-1991 sometimes popularity tricked to daytime), but the only "princess" dress Ariel ever actually wore prior to her Vanna dress was the dinner dress...this is why she's most commonly marketed in that one as a human...and I'm glad they sometimes change it to seafoam green to match the parks because that powder pink does not go with her ginger hair at all. When will Disney's designers learn that "just because it looks good on the blondes and possibly the brunettes...it doesn't mean it looks good on gingers?" I mean putting red on a ginger is like putting gold on Aurora...it just looks hideous. Sidenote 2: Yes I know they did that to Cinderella too, but at least they do maintain the ashes in her hair to give the illusion of her being strawberry blonde (she's actually just blonde, but ashes give her the name) and at least Cinderella wearing yellow has some fun reasonings to it via jump rope rhyme. "Cinderella dressed in yellow...."
The pink and it's clash with her red hair is intentional. Because it's a borrowed dress not one made for her specifically. They didn't have time to go make a fancy dress for her nor would they at that point. Some people also think that it looks slightly big the borrowed nature being the reason why. I really like the seafoam green version with purple shell accessories. It feels like what she would have had made for her after. A good option for the wedding/celebration scene if they don't just end on the transforming because purple sparkle dress is key for that.
@@emmalottie3346 I get that story-wise, but it really should have always been green or purple or blue or some combo to show that she was still her. The parks and Disney Princess even has a sea green variant of the dinner dress for her merch, but surely you would think that since this is a combo of past dresses and the one Ariel's most commonly seen in that they would at least give her something unique to herself too within the film in the outfit she is most seen in, she has lower sleeves and collar trim from Aurora, Upper Sleeves and bodice from Snow White while the skirt and color are from Cinderella (the exact shade is from Cinderella's mother's dress that the mice modified for her.) The green coloring with purple accents could have still been present even if they were not expecting her. I mean at least they had blue casual wear for her...and it's not like green dye would have been all that hard to find...purple on the other hand.... This is why the live action reimagining started Ariel off with a mint/sea green dress for Halle and then used the pink one...Halle makes the pink work, but Ariel still rocks green better.

Aurora's costumes in the Maleficent movies were so pretty! They had such a timeless and fantastical quality to them that matched the story and the character perfectly.
i love how the soft colors of her outfits contrast against the black of maleficent and diaval's outfits. the medieval fantasy morticia and gomez with their cottage core daughter. the colors also go well with elle fanning's soft coloring. the last dress is absolutely my favorite. the deep pink of the original would have overtaken her, while the baby pink makes her shine. ariel's lack of dresses pisses me off to no end. the costume designer is the same who did the costumes for edward scissorhands, tim burton's alice in wonderland, little women, etc. they could have done so much more!!! in aiw, alice has about six or seven outfits through the course of two days (the little one with the flower the hatter makes for her is my favorite) and she also gets more in the sequel. they could have absolutely done so much more for ariel.
In the movie "Maleficent" released in 2014, Aurora's dresses were inspired by the Victorian Artistic Dress. Aurora looks wonderful in silvery blue, but the peachy pink color suits her best. The gold color doesn't complement Aurora's blonde hair. I wish her hair was more of a strawberry blonde shade to enhance the sunny color and differentiate her from the Live-Action version of Cinderella. I like the idea of Aurora's style going from more medieval-inspired, at the beginning of Mistress of Evil, then shifting to more Italian Renaissance-inspired at the end, with puffy sleeves, high waists, more saturated bolder hues, and slashing and puffing, to represent Aurora's maturity and growth, while not rejecting where she came from! In the middle, her colors might appear washed out and more Elizabethan-inspired, representing Aurora modernizing and growing up too fast, to show Ingrith's influence. Also, put Ingrith in purples/golds/greens, similar to Anne Boleyn in The Other Boleyn Girl, or Lady Tremaine in the Cinderella remake!
I loved most of the interpretations of classic Disney Princesses in Once Upon A Time. I love the interpretations of Ariel, Aurora, Belle, Rapunzel, and especially Jasmine! All of Jsamine's costumes were in rich and luxurious fabrics! I could go into details!
A lot of the outfits from this video stay in my mind while I’m writing a fanfic, and they’ve absolutely helped me come up with dresses for the main character. I also just love these dresses so much, they’re gorgeous.
Honestly you know it’s good costume design if it memorable. I watched the beauty and the beast live action twice and I cant even remember anything except the princes ball before belle was in the castle
I love how Cinderella and Aurora were the only ones that looked like they cared about how they fit the cartoon character physically and the writing and acting was phenomenal
Some Princesses, such as Aurora and Snow White, didn’t have a jaw-dropping fancy ballgown moment in their original movie. Despite that, their casual dresses had their own expressive style and charm that fit perfectly with the story narrative and their character. I love how Aurora’s dresses, both in the original and live-action, look like they’re from a fairytale, which is perfect for the character and the story. In comparison, what we’ve seen so far of live-action Snow White’s dress just looks cheap.
@@artatmidnighti definitely am, I can’t count how many times I rewatched your Cinderella analysis, now I have another great video about one of the only 2 amazing live action remakes they’ve done
I first started watching your videos because of the Cinderella one and now I just keep watching because I love your perspective on the costume design for movies and people 💗
A really good example of how Beauty and the Beast could have transfered the fantastical elements of the costumes into live action is La Belle et le Bete, the 2014 french retelling of the story. The costumes were whimsical yet at least somewhat historically based and BEAUTIFUL
LOVE Elle's portrayal of Aurora, and I am so happy the costume designers took her color season into account. Putting her in the brighter and deeper colors of the animation would have washed Elle out. Instead, Elle's inherent elegance and the femininity of the character shine out even brighter with the pastels. Thank you for a thoughtful reflection of these costumes - there were so many lovely insights I had missed
completely forgot i loved the maleficent movies, especially in regards to the costuming! rather fond of mirror mirror as well (costuming and in general)
I agree that Cinderella is the best of the best when it comes to the costuming of the live actions. Everything about that movie is gorgeous. And I have to say, that I didn't pay much attention to Aurora's outfits until this video (she was my favorite part of Maleficent, but those movies just aren't my favorites, so I haven't watched them but once or twice) and I have to say I agree with everything you said. Makes me want to watch the movies again to appreciate them more!! I didn't remember how PRETTY her costuming was, omg. I have to say, I do like The Little Mermaid's costumes. I wish there were more and I wish they'd done the silver seafoam dress, but I do really like what we got. The color palette's are giving beachy and Carribean to me, and I actually really love the sleeves on the blue and, especially, the pink dress. They look wispy and almost fin-like to me. I liked Belle's peasant dress and different versions in the castle, but that yellow dress is the most disappointing and frustrating thing EVER. It looks legit like a prom dress they got at a mall. And the golden branch necklace and ear cuff are just insults to injury. They could've done so much with it. More gold, more layers, some roses! Her wedding/celebration dress is actually my favorite of the film. I do think it and the whole scene are so beautiful. I believe the choices to use the spring flowers instead of roses on her dress, the baby's breath in her hair, the vibrant sky blue hue of his outfit, the floral patterns/colors in the other costumes and the abundance of flowers dressing the set were all made to show the "change" in the castle. For one, to juxtapose the first ball we see at the beginning of the movie: set at night, everyone also in white but with an abundance of gold and opulence, an emphasis on wealth and vanity. The ball at the end is during the day, the whites are complimented by florals and pastels, and the emphasis is on nature and natural beauty. And Mrs. Potts first sung line is "Winter turns to spring..." so, I believe the ending celebration is supposed to be a visual representation of that, since the rest of the movie, the castle has been stuck in winter. Also, the rest of the film is very Baroque period (and provincial in Belle's village), in terms of French inspo/influence/palette. And the end is very Roccoco in terms of French inspo/influence/palette, which maybe is done to represent them ushering in a "new era" at the end. I don't know. The movie gets a lot wrong, but I could go on and on about what I love about the ending lol.
Dude, that Snow White dress looked like an Amazon Halloween costume. Sheesh 😭 These dresses are super gorgeous, though. I really love the train of the gown she was wearing in that clip walking with Maleficent. It kind of reminds my of a Vera Wang bridal gown
Cinderella’s ball gown is a vision. Chef’s kiss. I agree on the weird resolve to the color shift of Aurora’s wedding gown, all of hers could have been brighter, but the craftsmanship is exquisite. Malefiscent’s are perfect. Now…the men…I think the very clear difference between Stephan and Phillip’s dad was intentional. Stephan was greedy and selfish, whereas the other king had care and concern for his people. They wanted him approachable.
Im so glad that so many other people also feel the same way I do about Aurora's outfits ❤ I've always loved her dresses, and I loved how magical they felt in both movies.
While I have some (artistic) gripes with Jasmine's dresses in the live action Aladdin, I kinda disagree with the point you made about Jasmine's dresses being a worse adaptation because they were comparatively less sexy (which I know isn't the actual point you were making, but that is how that phrasing ended up coming off as). The likely reason they dressed her a bit more modestly is because people were rightfully pointing out that they were over sexualising Jasmine a lot compared to the other Disney Princesses at the time (Pocahontas would also garner this same critique), and iirc it's even been an issue at Disney parks, where Jasmine and Pocahontas actresses are most likely to garner sexual comments (which is obviously not their fault, it's the fault of the men making those comments, but it nonetheless goes to show that their clothes are PERCEIVED as much more sexualising). Jasmine's original clothes were also not accurate to the time and place (and not to mention, the depiction of the culture was entirely appropriated with little concern for what's Arabic and what's Indian), and while I agree with you that perfect accuracy isn't necessary so long as it feels accurate, I don't think most western viewers are able to really tell what "feels" accurate in a fantasy middle eastern setting, solely because there has been very little authentic representation to begin with in western media. I completely agree that the tan fabric in her teal dress instead of just having her stomach exposed was a strange choice though T_T no idea what they were thinking there
wonderful points! as you mention, I definitely don't think Jasmine needed to be sexy in the live action. my point was more that princesses can be powerful whether they are hyper-modest or not, and clothes don't necessarily define that. but you're right, I could have phrased that better! I also would have loved to see more two pieces that are common in South Asian fashion, rather than full length corsets/bustiers (while Agrabah is somewhere between the Middle East and South Asia, Jasmine is meant to reference South Asia because of her late mother - in the live action at least). those outfits have crop tops that are slightly more revealing, but are not necessarily sexy, if that makes sense. but, perhaps that isn't historically accurate either. in either case, I just wish she received the same intricacy and detail as Aurora and Cinderella did in her designs!
@@artatmidnight That's true! I think, considering they made Jasmine's background mixed, they had a very good opportunity to actually use that as part of their wardrobe storytelling (which is one of my gripes with her outfits; despite having multiple outfits throughout the movie, they don't tell much of a story, which is strange considering just how much more invested the writers were in Jasmine in the remake). Her outfits at the beginning and at the end of the movie are all interchangeable (and all very similar in silhouette, like you alluded to) despite her role as a princess being a source of conflict for her, which you'd think would reflect in the clothes to some degree :/
I mean Agrabah is based on Bagdad Iraq so there shouldnt be much south Asian influence. The movie went full stop Bollywood though especially with all the dancing. Her original outfit was based on arab belly dancers
@@annri8248 Eh, sort of. Like yes, it's based on Bagdad the same way Mulan's setting is China (where Disney very clearly didn't do their research as well as they could have and will randomly slip in Japanese things, such as Mulan straight up wearing a kimono). Likewise, a lot of the architecture in Aladdin has south Asian influences, and the live action cast a British-Indian actress, hence why they implied Jasmine's mother was South Asian (which is why the casting was also considered controversial). Regardless of whether we think it's a good or bad decision on Disney's end, I do think since they've already gone with that angle for Jasmine, they should've actually used it for something more aside from what feels like just a justification for the casting, if that makes sense.
I can't believe Elle Fanning was just 14 years old that first movie. She's a great actress and carried herself so maturely in promotional interviews. What a talent and class act
Great video! I so enjoy your costume reviews. I would absolutely LOVE for you to review the Secret of Moonacre and its wonderfully whimsical costumes!!
YES! Love, love, love! I agree 100% on your perspective, and I'm so glad for your critique on Sleeping Beauty's wedding dress. When I first saw the movie I was very underwhelmed, but I now understand why. You hit it right on the head, the unicolor misfortune tragically camouflaged the true beauty of the construction. Also, thank you for your narrative on the story telling detail. It really helped me understand why I struggled with some of these visuals. Excellent! P.S. Cinderella's ball gown, PERIOD!!!!! 💙🩵🤍💙🩵🤍
I thing i love also about malificent, is that it shows an imaginative way to display abuse without being (in my opinion) disrespectful. How she cried when she realized he cut her wings while she was asleep? A masterpiece of a moment.
May I suggest an idea for a future video? Disney Channel's _Descendents_ has insanely good costuming. The leads, and most of the supporting characters, wear outifts that not only look good, but also match their characters at each stage of their growth. I love the fashion of the original trilogy; it's an excellent example of great modern costuming that pays homage to classic Disney fairytale. The main characters' outfits are _packed_ with detail; you could watch the movies dozens of times and notice something new every single time.
Cinderella's ballgown may be the best of the bunch, but Maleficent is the only Disney Live action i've watched more than once, and part of that comes down to visual design, including costuming! Such a fun video! Thanks for highlighting Aurora's beautiful gowns
I love live action remakes! I think what's really interesting is that the 2 "good" films you mentioned Cinderella and Maleficent work because of what they do! They take the source material and don't just make it "realistic" rather they successfully right the wrongs of the original while staying true to the essence. You are incredible! It's like you said the costuming better reflects the characters and setting without changing them in this weird way. Cinderella will forever be iconic as a perfect reimagining but the maleficent movies are so underrated. There's 2 of them! Brilliant analysis!
I have never thought about princess dresses before today but I gotta say, you definitely kept me invested! Thanks for the great video! Also using Theater Dress as an insult is hilarious 😂
i can't believe that ive never seen these movies. i love what i see of the dresses here. and the historical inspiration is absolutely perfect. clearly inspired by a certain time period, but not trying to be historically accurate...because its fantasy!
I love, love, love the Cinderella adaptation. It was absolutely stunning in every way. I thought that the casting and costuming of Elle Fanning was inspired. Elle played her beautifully, sweet, charming, innocent, but strong and brave.
Just shows how important design is in congruency with craft. You can be amazing at making something and have all the budget but if the design concept doesn’t work then there will be an explicit discrepancy with the visuals. And visual language is so important. Ty for your insightful views on this
I love the change in her dresses form og, specifically like you said it is a 15 year old. I NEVER KNEW... she looks more innocent while still fairy and princess like. Using the og dressed would not work to still fit her character. The lightness in all her dresses portrays her innnocence and niceness so fking well
One thing I really appreciated about the first Maleficent movie was that they used a medieval netherlands/danish style (usually called viking for that time period) which was something I actively studied once upon a time and every single outfit from the kings big furry robe to the belt around Aurora's waist was centered in that timeline to make the world around aurora feel as if everybody was from the same timeline bc they were!
I really hate when people belittle the most sensitive and feminine princesses as it make they less strong, the reason why i also didn't fell in love with tim Burton's Alice, who is too much about being masculine to be cool instead the curious child she once was. My favorite princess is actually Snow White, i think for her to being 14 years old and making so much stuff to protect her life was admirable, and even i'm being a guy i feel very inspired by her sense of gentleness and organization. Plus, the original Sleeping Beauty could not be awesome by Aurora's part, but had instead three elder women as the protagonist, what is even more "progressive" than other modern things, even more cus the three fairies have different bodies, are funny but not because their appearance and are for they wacky personality and are also the ones who did the most to protect the kingdom and save everyone at the end, since Philip wouldn't do nothing without they magic help. Argh... I ran my mouth again 😅
Elle Fanning also looked so good at the Met Gala this year! The exhibition was loosely themed after Sleeping Beauty which inspired me to make this video 🩷 which live-action princess dress is your favourite?
Elle Fanning and Lily James as Princesses Aurora and Cinderella are my two favorite live-action Disney princesses!
I loved Cinderella’s and Ariel’s blue dress
Definitely her and Cindy/Lilly James.
I’m hoping Snow White will be given justice.
Also the green dress she wore to the premiere of mistress of evil. One of my fav themed gowns ever, she had a “pricked finger” and blood drops to reference. Ugh so pretty
Back when disney didn't pressure costume designers to make pieces easily transferable to dolls and dress up costumes 💸
such a good point! i love how Sandy Powell (Cinderella's costumer designer) approached this. She knew the dress would be made for toys but didn't let that change how grand it was for film. she basically said it was up to the toymakers to adapt it AFTER, rather than trying to fit a toy mold BEFORE
I think it was because it was before the age of remakes FULLY started; this was a reimagining, so flexibility was more feasible.
...now you're reminding me of how immersion-breaking Elsa's outfit in Frozen 2 was for me. It's like, yes, you _did_ plan this entire Nokk scene around what you could plausibly choreograph for Frozen 2 on Ice.
@@Eloraurora Question: which outfit are you talking about?
@@OpticalSorcerer When she takes off her coat (cloak?) and stands on the beach in what looks like a sparkly jumpsuit.
I love how the dresses in Maleficent many times reference her innocence and her purity while still honoring the original movie
One of the biggest things I’ve noticed with this movie is she embodies the princess she’s portraying. You can feel the joy and love from the character
@@BirdsandGhibliFan same!! i didn't think i was going to enjoy the films too much but i fell in love with elle fanning as aurora
Ikr, its literally off shoulder
You'll be floored by the difference.
i totally agree! i actually talked about Jasmine's dresses more in my Cinderella video and showed South Asian wedding dresses as inspiration. her outfits are missing so much detail and intricacy :(
@artatmidnight I loved your Cinderella video! I think that's what made me subscribe to your channel in the first place 💙
also, i think the original Aladdin was set on Arabia and ig the Disney animated film was a combo of the two which makes me even MORE disappointed CUZ LOOK AT THE AMOUNT OF CLOTHING OPTIONS THE HAD.
Why South Asian????? Aladdin was set in Arabia so it would have made more sense to base this off middle eastern or North African clothes.

I love their dresses as well! Especially Belle’s ballroom dress simple yet very flowy but Cinderella’s dress is my all time fave!
@@artatmidnight How did it catch on fire?
I love this video but I wanted to touch up on the corset part of the video. During the Rococo period (assuming that Beauty and the Beast took place before the French Revolution), women would wear a precursor to corsets called, stays. Every women during that time wore stays whether you were poor or rich. But the basic function of a corset or stays were to support and shape a woman's figure, basically, they were bras, because the modern bra were not invented, until the 1910s.
So for the woman who are against corsets, you are against tight-lacing which is a different thing that wealthy women did, not the working class. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
thank you! didn't know that, now im going to look it all up
Now I wonder if Hermione knew this. Something tells me she did not.

I suspect its because Cinderella was the first one, so it had something to prove so to speak. It was beautifully done.
@@MissCaraMint I think you're right, if only they had maintained it, I think many of their remakes would be performing better

Nightgowns make her feel very ghost/spirit-like and often like a white-forest witch
I wish more live action movies were reimagined adaptations of old animations (like Maleficent), not just a blind remake. Even in Cinderella (2015) we got to see more of other characters' perspectives rather just Cinderella's. This is the only way I see how this format can work.

I love the Maleficent films! They are some of my favorite live-action Disney films, besides Cinderella (2015)!
Same i love the fairy tale essence to it
It was my least fav lol, my fav is Alice in wonderland live action cause I loved the story of Alice in wonderland but the animated version scared me too much
I actually like the general idea of peasant dresses that can be worn several ways for visual interest, if we’re trying to suggest that a character doesn’t own many changes of clothes so she chooses the ones she has with ingenuity, but yeah, as soon as we go to a castle or a magical land, gimme costume changes!
Princess Ariel will forever become part of your world in royal bride raiment with fanciful fabrics, golden trims, a floral bouquet, headband with veil, and wedding ring."
However, I can see how in the original movie it could be purposefully vague.
That said if critics don't want Disney to close on weddings...they simply could have ended on Ariel's shimmering seafoam dress to show "her tail becoming seafoam and of the air" or if they couldn't do seafoam outright....do what they did when designing it in 1989...call Vanna White's wardrobe designer and see if there's anything tropical in that dressing room that would have worked.
my heart aches for tangled's legacy once the live action is out
Oh grow up a bit, the animated still exists. If you can't handle a bad liveaction film, that's your fault for being so fragile.

@@gleewhoseline198Um wow. Talk about insensitive.
i can't even think about it or i'll cry
4:54 I like it that way, it suits Elle Fanning’s lighter complexion, we need to also remember the actors natural colourings, its part of the reason why they couldn’t give Ariel (Hailey Bailey) super vibrant red hair like in the animations
When designing a character, live-action or animated, you need to model their outfit designs and coloring to go well with their natural colors, almost like no other character can pull off those outfits other than them.
I feel like a brighter darker red hair would have looked better on her colouring than the muted orangey one though. Like those dyed unnatural reds. I think it would have been more magical
@@venusvestiaire yeah but i don’t know how far they can go without it looking like a wig
@@Freezient I think if they dyed it like they did the browny orangey red, it shouldn’t look like a wig
i couldn’t put my finger on why i haven’t liked the recent live actions but i think you said it perfectly. they look too costume-y !! with cinderella and aurora it feels like we’re peeking into their lives, with the others it feels like they put on a play for us if that makes sense ?
It frustrates me every time I think about it!
thank you so much for always making the best video analysis about movies, they make my day so much better and inspire me so much with my own art
you're the sweetest! it means so much that i can brighten someone's day 💛 all the best with your art!
@@artatmidnight thank you so much!! keep up the good work with your videos (also you're one of my favorite channels on yt)
I love how the Angelina Jolie’s daughter played young Aurora! It was so cute!
I was so mad with what they did with this dress. Belle's dress was my favorite when I was a little girl.

I mean, she's also a literal servant lol why would they let her wear jewelry?
Favorite Dresses:
All of Auroras costumes in the second film felt like they perfectly reflected what a portrayal of Sleeping Beauty would wear in live action.
The world building amazes me genuinely!
omg you have NO idea how relieving it feels to know there’s somebody out there that appreciates the Maleficent movie as much as I do. Personally i’m not a fan of the sequel for many reasons that i could write an essay about- but to put it simply: it lacked the depth of passionate storytelling that the first one had, both in the writing department and direction.
So it was nice to hear how you pointed out the first movie’s superiority over the sequel regarding how it looked more cinematic and the costume designs for the non-main characters were treated with the same level of attention to detail as the main cast (plus a whole lot more reasons that weren’t touched upon bc it’s not the focus of your video LOL!)
As a fellow huge Maleficent fan, thank you for taking the time to appreciate these movies :}
On land nobody knows she she is.
i will forever have something about the live action re makes
We need to talk about Cruella too! Disney Villains getting protagonism are totally slaying.

And with Aurora and everything I can tell you every scene and the dress for it
I love how Cinderella and Aurora were the only ones that looked like they cared about how they fit the cartoon character physically and the writing and acting was phenomenal
This was so interesting I love it - shows just how much the dress influences the story and character
I’d love to see you analyze the costumes in Cruella the live action remake because I’m obsessed with this movie!
Was never a fan of the live action remakes but I commend these

I heavily agree with the points here! Especially Ariel’s costumes. I was excited to see all the outfits in live action and they didn’t adapt them!!
I love Auroras dresses and the Maleficent Movies in general. They really add something new to the narrative and make it worth watching.
Finally some love for the maleficent movies! They are flawed ofc, but I really love and appreciate the different take on the sleeping beauty story ☺️
The golden dress reminded me of that amazing Ever After dress that Danielle wears to the ball. :D
Art @ Midnight posted today? Despite how my day went, this is an amazing day!
Aurora’s lace fairy dresses are literally my dream wardrobe as a child and now.

Aurora’s Dress is Awesome in Live Action and they deserve more credit!
I live for these costume analysis videos
Dude, that Snow White dress looked like an Amazon Halloween costume. Sheesh 😭
These dresses are super gorgeous, though.
YESS!!! FINALLY!!! an appreciation post for live-action Aurora ❤❤❤❤
Yeah, she's the daughter of the Sultan, she would have dressed more modestly not just full on showing everything except a bra.
You always have such intriguing insights into these movies. Thank you for another great video!
Obsessed with this channel you have such talent, I would dieeee to see a deep dive into the iconic timeless Titanic movie costumes 🥹
Belle's wedding dress look like dainty porcelain! I do agree that it should have roses instead, though.
Ty for your insightful views on this
These films Creative Directors needs to see this and start taking notes
I love the change in her dresses form og, specifically like you said it is a 15 year old. I NEVER KNEW...
she looks more innocent while still fairy and princess like. Using the og dressed would not work to still fit her character. The lightness in all her dresses portrays her innnocence and niceness so fking well
Please do a thirteen analysis I think the colour theory and character growth and storyline would be a really got video from you❤️🙏
That was a very beautiful video essay. I totally forgot about the 2nd malificent movie and now i have to go back and watch both again 😂
I love the way you talk!! I've never realized 'bout these dresses and omg they're so beatiful and tell so much
One thing I really appreciated about the first Maleficent movie was that they used a medieval netherlands/danish style (usually called viking for that time period) which was something I actively studied once upon a time and every single outfit from the kings big furry robe to the belt around Aurora's waist was centered in that timeline to make the world around aurora feel as if everybody was from the same timeline bc they were!
