@@Bottle_of_airYT literally schizophrenic off-your-meds levels of cope. Mojang in 2013 had made so much money from the success of Minecraft, CEO Carl Manneh said if they stopped gaining profit they could survive off of savings alone for almost a decade.
The part about the complexity and "meta" of modern minecraft really resonates with me. I remember playing 1.16 or 1.17 with my friend and at one point he said "ok let's mine netherrite, I'll craft some beds" and I was just confused. I'm really out of touch with all of these new mechanics like villager trading posts and it really doesn't feel rewarding to learn them just to play a block game. I currently play on 1.5.2 with my brother since it was the version of our childhoods. Yes, some things are annoying, like placing buttons or trapdoors, but the whole experience is just simpler and more welcoming, which is the exact thing that I loved about minecraft.
The biggest problem I have with removing fireflies because they kill frogs - They then made the frogs eat LITTERAL MOLTEN ROCK CUBES! When frogs eat magma cubes - they poop out a light block. How in the hell is that *better* than fireflies???
I can understand that, because those are fictional things, specially that light block. And I don't think a kid would have an easy way to get magma. and I think Mojang believes that children are, even a little, intelligent. Because otherwise they would have removed things like golden carrots or potions based on spider eyes.
there is no real life equivalent to magma cubes, so whatever wild interaction frogs can have with them is completely void of any real life consequences, and adding fireflies that don't do anything would have had people complain THAT they don't do anything
The bloating of the game was so onpoint. Too many mobs and too many one-time specific items that will be forgotten or never even used. What also annoys me is structure generation. Structures used to be very very rare to come across in earlier versions, it made you feel alone and on your own. But now you find a village or any other structure from just exploring for a few minutes which removes the rewarding feeling of finding one like it did back then.
For someone like me the structures can help create lore for a world, make it feel more special. Im happy more things are getting added, because its showing Minecrafts world isnt dead and youre alone, its progressing towards the player finding more life to make the world feel more alive, at least at some point before the player spawned in. It probably gets the “youre the last of your kind” done well, but alone you are not
@@JoaoPedro-ox6sf yea, because for the last 4 years mojang added basically nothing, like said above adding one specific action/item to use once and never again, it feels like they added something but in reality they did not
@@Ocelot1211 They've added one off features, but for some reason refuse to implement some features of the mod "Mouse Tweaks" to vanilla that makes moving items between inventories manually so much better. It feels to me that now that Microsoft owns Minecraft that they can't add community created features to the game, so if it exists as a mod it's not going in the game flat out.
please explain how the old desert pyramids are more interesting to find then ancient cities and trial chambers, heck even the modern desert pyramid is better because archology elements were added to it, if the newer structure additions don't sit right with you because of how complex they are, just say it, its fine
The Mob Vote I believe is, yes, for getting people to talk about the game, but I think behind the scenes, all the options are mobs that someone at mojang pitched and then most of the team is like "no, we don't like that." So they then take the three closest to getting the thumbs up from QA and leave it up to the community which one is not scrapped.
honestly probably lol, i can definitely see that being the case. i do hope some of the losers from previous ones arent lost forever and get revisited someday
I really think a big part of why people dont enjoy modern minecraft is the modern meta. I agree, the trendy way to play this game is all about automating everything and making everything as big and as fancy as possible. I find fun in playing this game like I used to back in the day, in my current survival world in the latest version I've really just been doing what I want to do, when I want to do it. I spent a whole evening designing a bathroom in my castle, completely pointless but thats the whole fun of the game to me I guess, just building and doing what I want in my own way.
This happens with literally any game with a large enough community. People will optimize the fun out of anything, is just how we humans are sometimes. I think it's wrong to blame Minecraft for a flaw that is not theirs; it's ours.
What I hate most about moderm Minecraft is that they add all these mobs and NO meat types. We should have camel meat, goat, calamari, horse, all that. Literally give me those and I will never complain again. Need more village types and terracotta tiles and stairs too.
your mention of bloat in the game is definitely one my biggest problems with it too, there is SO many items, mobs, features, etc in this game that have like 1 purpose (IF ANY, BTW) and most of the time that purpose is for something that has…no purpose, like something i saw someone mention recently is how we should get a cooking update, and they said this specific thing “we already have all the ingredients” and this, THIS was a prime example of the games bloat, like what fucking purpose do sweet berries and cocoa beans serve, why tf can we only make cookies with cocoa beans, this is just one example of the many situations this occurs in minecraft and i just wish everything served a meaningful purpose rather than just existing for no reason
I do mostly agree (although coca beans are the exception because they can make brown dye.) One thing to point out how it's different from terraria, which has 3.3 times more items than minecraft, is that terraria has groups of items, and if it's not in a group, then its used for a lot of things. you have tools of each metal, furniture for each building block, specific loot for each boss. it's all very organized and you can find a use for everything. want this item that increases the amount of summons you have? guess what, you can upgrade it not once, but twice. what about that sword forged from hell? you can upgrade that into a really cool weapon, which can be upgraded again, and then again into the best weapon in the game. don't even get me started on base materials. in minecraft, you have these turtle shells that can be used for a potion and a helmet that gives you 5 seconds of water breathing. thats it. what about the sniffer? it gives you flowers? what do they do? oh nothing. all these cool new (passive) mobs they added to this game. i wonder what they drop. Absolutley nothing. what about phantom membranes? Its been more than TEN updates since their introduction, surely they have another use? No? just the potion and elytra repairing that nobody uses because the level cost on anvils is broken and everybody has mending anyway? ok.
@@skullcat324Delusional, you are forgetting creative mode exists. There are no useful features, all of them have uses including poisonous potatoes and clocks. Minecraft is a sandbox with survival aspects, we shouldn’t ignore the sandbox part. Survival isn’t the only game mode,
@@carinaslima creative isn't the only gamemode, you are right, when it comes to decoration and building is the only thing. but in SURVIVAL, they're hard to get and serve no purpose to the gameplay. clocks can be useful to see what time it is when underground, but poisonous potatoes??? can you tell me what use they have?
Cocoa beans and sweet berries are a pretty bad example. Cocoa beans are used for brown dye, and a decoration block. Berry bushes are also used for decoration, food, can be farmed with foxes, etc.
I never understood why people couldn't just choose not to interact with those mechanics they do not like. In the end, Minecraft is whatever you want it to be, but this video helped me realize that self-imposing yourself with such limitations by playing a beta is in itself the act of shaping the game the way you just like and want it to be. Thanks for your video, your ideas are super well exposed.
as a software engineer I can say you are completely valid in criticizing mojang for the delivery of Caves and Cliffs. it was NOT because programming is hard and is 100% because corporate bloat and red tape. I abandoned the game completely because of the management of those updates, moving on to VintageStory and other games. I only play Minecraft if I boot up a large modpack which I only do with friends and they would rather play other games most of the time either. "Minecraft is for the kids now, they don't want or need you anymore" is the message they chose with the 1.19 censorship update - remember that.
I really think Minecraft could use an update similar to what the developer of Mosa Lina did - an update that *removes* a lot of the bloat, with some option to re-add them as an extra feature/datapack. Just as described, it could remove Glow Ink Sacs and replace their functionality with Glowstone - it could remove Sniffers which don't fit the artstyle and do literally nothing but dig up cosmetic flowers, and add them somewhere else as a rare drop. Cut the ruined portals that stain the landscape, make structures rarer so getting full diamond gear isn't a matter of walking 50 blocks from spawn into a village, cut the armadillos, the camels, the goats, even the pandas and dolphins that serve either 1 purpose or none at all. Even turtles feel ill-fitting to the Minecraft experience, because they scream of using the game as a platform to virtue signal for endangered animals instead of actually serving a purpose in the world (which is why killing them gives you nothing, you need to breed turtles and grow a baby to get scutes). The model of infinite expansion has been Minecraft's downfall, but not because of the flaws of the model, but because they instead have been throwing purposeless additions onto it instead of adding to Minecraft's core - Mining and Crafting. What use does taking a brush and brushing sand and gravel for some cosmetic pottery sherds have when you could just find a broken pot deep in the world to get the sherds, adding to the experience of Mining and exploring the world? Minecraft becomes unrecognisable because Mojang keeps throwing temporary additions and saying "LOOK! LOOK! WE ADDED X AND Y! HYPE, RIGHT? WE'RE STILL RELEVANT! BUY OUR PRODUCTS!" instead of making a better sandbox experience; they're not pouring more sand in the box, they're just throwing us different shells to put on our castles.
Idk after playing around with the new rendering engine and seeing the new deferred rendering pipeline in action.... I disagree they are working very hard to keep the game relevant and being a corporate structure ideas take time and have to be passed around before execution. Nostalgia is a really big barrier to get past but when you do you will enjoy a lot more out of life.
so a sandbox game should remove all the things that are not in your face enough because you are never willing to put in the effort to explore new things that might inspire your creativity?, in a game about creativity?, what about all the useless old features?, what do pigs do that's unique?, what are the uses of lapis?, have you ever actually crafted gold tools?, are they bloat?, should Mojang remove those "useless" features?, who is forcing you to speed run diamond tools and armor? or is it all just nostalgia speaking?
I started playing beta again when the chat report update was being pushed and haven't played modern since. The instance I booted up 1.7.3 I felt like I was 9 years old all over again, I have since revisited classic non-beta versions and playing old school modpacks like tekkit.
I can see myself not being able to play modern in a few years time. I'm a person who greatly appreciates clarity of thought and space, so after a mining trip, I love (in beta) how my chests aren't full of random clutter like they are in modern. But ofc it's different for everyone! All my friends greatly enjoy modern mc and that's totally fine, we're different :D
@@Strideo1Man, when I was a kid I was so addicted to this creepy atmospher of minecraft... Especially villagers, they are so dumb its making everything more depressing, they are useless and very fragile and often die after first night. And maaaan, I was addicted to this feeling of desolation in a world where Im not alone.
personally, with a few mods and datapacks that allow the old mechancias and terrain generation of beta in newer versions, Im loving minecraft. I have a world now with over 200 hours in 1.20.1, but from some mods it has new biomes but old terrain generation. I found this the perfect mix of old and new.
Mojang behaves like a socially anxious teenager. They occasionally try to break out of their shell, just to be bullied back into it by their peers (the Minecraft playerbase). They have now created a bunch of unhealthy avoidance tactics and have become complete social pushovers, caving to even moderate backlash and trying to appease the bullies (they cannot patch obvious exploits or do any game balancing for fear of backlash). They try to appear unique and quirky, but this comes across as fake and creates more backlash (mob votes, Minecraft Live, etc.). This has lost them their identity, as in trying to please and appease everyone, they have lost their personality and charm, and are like a tumbleweed being blown where ever the wind goes.
You can almost FEEL the developer's personalities filter through their "creations", can't you? It feels so disconnected and assbackwards sometimes... 100% feel you there man.
A few changes: Goats can be milked and brushed for string (that is literally where cashmere comes form) goat milk gives 3 hearts of regen to make it different from normal milk. it is brushed off goat hair from their winter coats). Remove Turtles and keep armadillos as a way to upgrade leather armor similar to netherite is for diamond, mainly to upgrade dyed armor. Make shipwrecks more rare and with a bit more value to them. put maps to woodland mansions and such in them and boost the odds of gold, emeralds, and diamonds in the captains chest. Have a higher chance than a normal dungeon to have a notched apple in them along with buried treasure chests. Foxes can be tamed but arre annoying like cats and are nocturnal (based on actual tamed foxes. They are more of a pain to take care of). Have them be able to scare off zombies, whitches and illagers at night, but sleep more in the day. Polar bears can drop bass, add in grizzly bears that spawn near rivers and drop salmon and berries, higher chances in taiga biomes. All squids drop calamari but also debuff the player with squid ink, giving a lesser blindness effect and increasing aggro ranges for 2 minutes. ink sacs can make blindness potions, decreasing projectile mob's accuracy and lowering aggro ranges of mobs affected. glow stone also works for signs, glow squid ink can also make the arrows that light up mobs (forgot name) and be used to make potions with the same effect. Sniffer can also be used to find dungeons, mineshafts, trial chambers, strongholds, and ancient cities.
I used to play on beta servers before they have become popular. back in 2018 - 2022 when the last beta server i played shut down permanently, i made a lot of memories on those servers (betalands. Oldhaven and Beyta)
I’ve never seen this before but it’s true. The Sniffer doesn’t do anything for survival players, only for builders. Mobs should try to appease everyone.
I hate my dilemma between beta and modern Minecraft, because in every new update I absolutely LOVE half the features they add, and DESPISE the other half. I love the simplicity and peacefulness of going back to beta, but I feel like I'm sacrificing a lot of features I like from modern. I love the breadth and quality of life improvements of modern, but I feel like I'm putting up with a lot of bullshit bloat to have the good parts. Probably the only way I could truly enjoy Minecraft again without burning out within 2 weeks is to learn to code and mod my own custom version of the game, but even that is a sacrifice because what fun is a world I can't share with anyone if I wanted to, and have to constantly update just for myself? Sometimes I wonder what Minecraft would be like if Notch had never sold it...
*The villager update was the breakin point for me. No more modern, gonna stick with 1.7.10 now.* Why? Well, cause at least in the older versions, Emeralds ARE ACTUALLY RARE!!! Now??? Hah, just grab 32 sticks, and done. Emerald... Like, you can cheese the new villagers so, so much now.... Its so bad...
i've got a ground breaking concept for you....not using villagers. also they added in a new feature - villager trade rebalance - that nerfs villager trading.
My ideal Minecraft version would be one with the quality of life improvements of relatively recent updates. Say, about the time offhanding an item became a thing. And the block and gameplay variety of just before they added pillagers and phantoms. I started playing a little after they added sprinting and hunger. Basically every update back then was QoL, new toys to play with, and genuinely good additions like being able to place stairs upside down. Also not being owned by Microsoft or any other big company that will just bloat the game and add macrotransactions.
This is a very good video. I agree that many blocks, mobs, and items are such a bloat, and I've learned to limit myself on what types of blocks I use. For example I'm trying to make a redesign of Minecraft villages and mostly using the block pallet that is used in the villages, and sparingly using "new" blocks to tie everything together. Less is more and it really shows. I've changed my mind set from "I need some shulkers" to "I can make a house to store my items with chests and barrels" as well as "I need an Elytra" to "I can make a horse pathway/railline". I really am enjoying putting boundaries on what I do in the game because it sets me up for nice and natural progression rather than grabbing villagers and stuffing them into a shack.
I have been playing on my Minecraft beta 1.4 beta world for almost a year now, I can’t tell you how much more I enjoy it than modern Minecraft despite the lack of features. I’ve just been terraforming and building up a town It’s been really fun
Adding a definitive end-state to minecraft felt like the moment the degradation began. In pre-End minceraft, the only "end" goal was diamond tools and conquering the nether. I remember Notch mentioning that one of the main inspirations for the game was Dwarf Fortress, which is much the same way; the only "end" goal is candy and conquering the circus. Otherwise, both old-school minceraft and DF both only have a "goal" of seeing what you could eventually build for yourself in your own world. Modern minecraft is different. There's a final boss. There's a million structures to find and conquer. There's villages to grow and protect. Why bother building a cool caste, a illustrious mansion, redstone contraptions, rollercoasters, pixel art? There's nether fortresses and strongholds to find! And you're gonna need a mob farm if you ever want to get the ender pearls for the end gate! Now, much like you reitierate in the video, I'm not going to be a nostalgic boomer who says it was objectively better in pre-release. But alpha, beta, and pre-release minecraft is a different game than release minecraft, and I prefer the relative simplicity of the pre-release versions.
Although I disagree with some views I agree with a lot of the points mentioned, this video is a great one. I would also add that with the scutes, it made sense one the best helmet being made difficult to acquire because turtle scutes are a pain to get and you only get it on the late game but wolf armour is something we should havea access as soon as possible and making it come from only a specific biome using a specific mob having only one use makes is just a random item you don't throw away because it has a use but don't have where to put because it doesn't do much.
What a miss the most is how the beta terrain feels almost alien, as well as the music. I loved the idea of colonizing and surviving in a alien world, and now the terrain is now big, but realistic. The music has been made more catered to the realistic vibe and player, and it just feels different.
My issue with the mob votes is they could easily include every mob and they probably already made them but choose to only pick one out of three cause people vote (mostly sided) when modders make new mobs they add in a plethora of mobs like Alexmobs.
"we didn't want to poison frogs" meanwhile several flowers in the game are toxic to cats but i don't see those pollen-y bitches getting removed. "also have this ugly ass pokemon camel thing that just sniffs up entirely decorative plants" while i agree the weird narrative focus that minecraft took after Jeb took the reigns was odd and set at odds with the more personal nature of the experience, especially in the latest few updates, I can't help but love the 1.16 update personally just for how much more interesting it made exploring the nether in a way that didn't feel too out of place but I obviously missed some updates from hermiting in 1.7.10 for so long (largely due to modding)
I love modern Minecraft, and I also love beta, but it makes sense that some people would prefer one or the other, Minecraft's game design is fundamentally different now than it was before full release, it's basically a different game.
Just give us options. Why do I need to download a mod to remove hunger and make items heal instead. That could just be a toggleable option. Why make me go back to 1.7.3 for that awesome world generation, just make that an option or at least give an option for 1.7.3 biomes to generate
A couple of days ago I read a comment and someone said "I miss old minecraft when people would just build whatever they felt was right but nowadays everything is either copied from reddit or some youtube video" and I fully agree with that. I am currently playing on an SMP with a friend in 1.21.1, I could not live without modern minecrafts features and we also use quite a few mods (200+) but our main focus is building. Of course we have farms set up that automate certain things like an Iron Farm and I personally also have an automated Paper Farm with the new Crafter blocks and an automatic wool farm with all wool colors but those are mainly just to have these resources readily available for building because since I've read this comment I've just been going wild, building massive structures that are often useless but look cool and just generally building not in a way I think would look good to most people but that looks good to me. This is how I play now and having these automatic farms to have the building materials readily available is really helpful because I cannot be bothered to go look for 17,000 (yes that number is not exaggerated) pieces of Iron to craft Iron Blocks, I'd rather just have the Iron Farm going that produces all that for me while I'm building something else so I can get to it immediately. Currently sitting at 3 1/2 double chests full of Iron Blocks and I don't think that's quite enough for the build I have planned. To put it simply, Minecraft whether modern or old is what you make of it, if you dislike the meta of automating everything then just don't, if you have friends that do this and you don't like it then don't play with them and just do whatever you feel is right. (On that note I once played with a friend and we loaded up the world for the first time and within 10 minutes of the world existing he was full diamond gear and armor, I really disliked that so I never played with him again)
haha yeah its pretty unoptimized! its a shame for some people its near unplayable without optifine or sodium. youd think they wouldve done something about it already 😭
@@Zahrul3 MAX??? WHAT DO YOU USE?? A QUANTUM COMPUTER???? DO YOU HAVE 8 1TB RAM AND 16 RTX 4090's?? minecraft has such a shit optimization that going above 16 chunks just lags your game like crazy.
The biggest problem with modern Minecraft is the feature:mechanic ratio. There are far few many THINGS and far too few *things to do* in Minecraft. How many "systems" are there in Minecraft? 1. Trading (a mechanic which literally turns Hard difficulty into a difficulty easier than peaceful) 2. Brewing (which is a terrible system as potions are ridiculously underpowered for unstackable items) 3. Bartering (not really a system because there is only one way to interact with this mechanic and that is by giving a piglin gold), 4. Enchanting (extremely boring and grindy and made unnecessarily hard by the pointless "too expensive!" mechanic which Mojang have refused to remove or at least come up with a method to circumnavigate it. You HAVE to start enchanting a new item from scratch if you run into this) 5. Redstone 6. Breeding (can be used on llamas, horses, donkeys and mules to get better traits but the process is agonisingly boring and grindy) 7. Archeology (not really a system as there is only one way to interact with it; by brushing blocks) Everything. Sucks. Everything is lackluster and boring. And yet, Mojang continue to focus their efforts on adding new THINGS. New structures (most of which are painfully rare due to biome-dependency and which are looted and raided the same boring way as the last one), new items that have 1 use, new mobs that don't drop anything and new decorative blocks. But the functionality always sucks.
@@aerosma5021 Redstone is the best mechanic; no other game offers such depth and possibilities. You can play for months just because of it. I agree with all other points, but they are only 1% of what redstone offers. To be completely fair, the mods RedPower2 and ComputerCraft elevated redstone's power to a cosmic level, but we won't get that anymore. We have to be content with a single crafter, and locked slime blocks and pistons.
The main reason i think is that mojang stopped updating the game to improve it as a whole but rather decided to add a tonne of gimmick features that would get people talking. Marketing over quality.
@@BritishGovernment1815updates take a very long time to make and how the development cycle works, 1.16 was probably mostly complete by the time the pandemic hit
@@depressedtoaster887 right. But i still think mojang could do better given that they develop the most sold game of all time and have the most monthly active players than any other game.
And that's why we have only 2 ways to play. Beta or modded the hell out. I personally choose modpacks where people REALLY love what they are doing, have a vision of playstyle and give you the option try it, or something else, if you don't like it. I'm a fun of automated farms, but not in the way it works in Vanilla, cause redstone is really tricky and hard to understand, so most people just watch tutorials and that's all. But mods like Create, for example, give you sooo much room for experimentation, trials and errors, easy and hard stuff to wok with. I spent so much time in Create, so many playthroughs, and every time I build differently, there's no stagnation of idea. Thank you for video and good luck in your Minecraft journey! New or old, it's always ours to feel and enjoy.
despite not actually playing it when it came out, my first memories of minecraft was actually of beta (probably). i remember watching a lot of a youtube series of a group of friends playing minecraft when i was younger, and they had no hunger, so obviously before 1.8 beta. then i got minecraft and was super confused when i saw the hunger bar. dunno exactly when i got minecraft but it was probably some time between 2012-2014.
anyways i've been playing some beta recently and i feel like i can actually just jump in and build instead of doing things, which is a nice change of pace. i'm considering creating a beta server for my friends, since it wouldn't be much of a time commitment if they don't want it to, and they all don't have much time with school and work. but i haven't run it by them yet.
also sadly i no longer remember who i watched that made me into minecraft. but i think i remember them spewing some conspiracy shit that i believed cause i was like 6 (but promptly forgot about) so maybe it's a good thing
Few things. First off, this video is great. Second, just making sure you know that the armadillo and wolf varients are part of their own update (1.20.5 armored paws update) Third, there is a setting to disable structures.
thank you! and yeah, that was an oversight on my behalf. completely forgot. i usually assume they add the mob vote winner into the whole big update haha, want expecting them to add them so quickly!
Watching this video made me realize and myself how Minecraft is now and then and then made me come to the conclusion, but I’m gonna give data a try but still play the newer releases.
I agree that Beta is not better than Modern Minecraft, and that both have their charms and draws. There's a whole discussion worth of ideas that i have that i feel lead to where we are now, and my personal thoughts and opinions, but ill keep it short and say that: I think we were bound to get to this point later rather than sooner. I personally still play modern because it's generally what all my friends play on, and i enjoy the block diversity, but there is a part of me that misses the old Beta days, with good friends now gone. I hope you all have a wonderful and lovely day.
For a game like Minecraft to be #1 and to watch the main developers squander that success to make lower quality or bloated content just feels like a slap in the face, especially because they'll never backport newer performance features to older versions so it's either upgrade and lose out on the experience you've grown to love or play on a technically worse, more raw but less modern feature-set which might hamper performance
For me i found the best of both worlds with getting to explore most of the major updates. I started a world in beta 1.7 and made challenges for myself for eg: getting to the nether and full dia and a base. Then updated to 1.0 in the same world to get enchants and so on. So when you reach the newer updates you explored the older versions too and still can have mass farms later on when you did mostly everything else
I've got the same issues with Modern. Burnout is ever-present and multiplayer is just way too hard to get working in a manner that doesn't require I have 64GB of RAM. So, combine the difficulty in trying to get modded multiplayer working on Java, the metas that have arisen in the game, and the fact you basically need to become a technical player just to get a renewable source of anything that's not wood or charcoal, and you get what I call: A very lonely, boring, and paralyzing experience.
This is the reason why I play modded Minecraft, I don't really care about the main-line updates since they lack substance and impact and mostly "for me" I came from pre-classic before alpha/beta...The latest item that actually is cool is the breeze balls and the mace, that is it and it's sad... For modded I prefer mods like Mekanism for 1.12.2 and Create for 1.18.2 - 1.20.1 And not to mention the bad idea to add chat reporting to a block game...
Chat reporting isn’t that bad, it is bad but people hate it too much, y’all forget we’re in 2024, plus, there are many other cooler items, like the trial spawner keys, new effects, enchantments, even paintings and discs.
I only use minecraft for building, primarily, and its kinda relaxing just sitting back, enjoying the chaos that happens around the mobvote. Also they should just add all three mobs. They say its so the community can feel like a part of development but i think no one ever has voted in the mob vote and thought «I feel like im part of the development now, YIPEEE!!!»
Sorry for the long essay, but i see no one bringing up this point so here it goes: The Modern Minecraft Terrain Generation Problem- I'm going to postulate that the problem started with the Elytra. Now that you can fly (end game loot, btw) Mojang had to make the terrain more enormous. Not only that, but Mojang also assumes that people have beefy computers that can render VERY FAR for muh vistas. Minecraft feels more Oppressive because of the beefy mountains and the vacuous caves. It is no longer "cozy" where YOU are "god" of this world and are impelled to make it come to life. You see that mountain over there as big as Everest? Yeah, try and make THAT on your own! How can you compete with that? The mountain is the focal point and not YOUR creations. It's as if Minecraft turned the player into an ant, insignificant against the mighty world generation that does all the "impressive terraforming" for you and Without You. That your creations are just tacked on blemishes against the beauty of the world gen. It makes me sad and feel completely disconnected as I have to try and strain myself to make my builds flow more seamlessly into the landscapes (most humans want to preserve nature around their homes and thus this instinct is carried over when we play Minecraft) It feels bad when you want to make something but have to destroy a pretty hillside. Not only that but also an Over-Abundance of little points of interests scattered around in what feels like every 20 or so chunks. Shipwrecks, ruined portals, witch huts. villages (which used to be a rare sight) underwater ruins etc. They are too numerous and are places for easy loot. Why? Now Minecraft feels like a Linear game, going from point of interest A to point of interest B, etc. etc. Endless Distractions. The world is already populated.... It doesn't need you anymore....... I hate that this game gives off the same vibe as in real life. The world is already full and your intervention ultimately is meaningless... TL;DR: Minecraft is no longer your blank canvas. It is now a frustrating/constricting picture where by you add your creativity on an already crowded and finished canvas...
forgoing the absolutely enrapturing sense of otherworldy mysticism that minecraft used to have in exchange for milquetoast and uninspired corporate coated animals from real life is absolutely the biggest offence to me. Minecraft used to be an alternate universe, vaguely rooted in what humans know. The most iconic creature from Minecraft is the Creeper. Who asked for polar bears, parrots, foxes etc?
I agree, though I prefer 1.8 the most, probably. I have to say, the game just sort of felt like it was losing direction since 1.9. They started neglecting the community in endless pursuit of higher profit margins, and that just really made it unenjoyable to play sometimes
Oh boy time to yap: overall its fair to not like a version, and honestly this is the best video ive seen discussing modern minecraft vs beta. There really isnt a clear winner and i like that this feels more of an argument for how good beta minecraft is to this day, it does make me want to try and play an old version as a challenge one day. But, that being said i do like yapping and breaking down the reasonings for people's opinions and i wanna point out the minor issues i have with your arguments: 1:16 this one is fair, the past few updates included some nice stuff out of context but with how the caves and cliffs update was handled... it definitely felt underwhelming to see the vision of the update being split into 3 parts. And with the silly reasoning with the firefly not being added still urks me to this day, I do think people should reflect on what was added rather than what was not, because honestly we got some pretty nice additions to the game despite it all. 3:59 again this one is also fair, not many people particularly enjoy seeing their favorite mobs get kicked off the face of the earth because one got the most votes. I was one who particularly loved the concept of the copper golem, he looked like a funny dude and i wouldve happily made a redstone build that was decided by the golem pressing one button or not. I will say i disagree with the idea that the armadillo has no involvement with the trial chambers, it introduced wolf armor which ended up being incredibly useful when its behavior got reworked to absorb both fire and creeper explosions, let alone just basic hits from zombies, spiders and skeletons. this makes bringing a wolf with you to a chamber actually worth while, since they scare off skeletons and boggs. One major issue im noticing from the first 2 arguments is while theyre fair, they have nothing to do with what modern minecraft offers in terms of gameplay, this is simply an argument that mojang hasnt been doing well at managing updates and their mob votes. which is fair, ive warmed up to the fact that what we got was pretty good but i will still be on the fence hoping that they learned their mistakes and will change things around for the better. the future of 1.22 and their new update cycles seem interesting and i hope this means they plan to release smaller but more consistent updates that people are happy with. 5:24 ok this i have a personal problem with. not because i dont see the point youre trying to make but because this is part of an argument that urks me. where do we draw the line between wanting more mobs with functionaility and adding "too many gimmicks". because not all the mobs have to contribute to your day to day gameplay, if they did, this would only fuel the point you make later about the "meta" being an issue, i just want mobs that have a fun interaction personally, not give me a new enchantment that only they can give me, or a mace equivalent for the crabs arms or some random bizarre addition. 6:11 im mixed on this. I completely agree that the modern community is abysmal, but thats a biproduct imo of people being exposed to games all about progression and "work". Players nowadays are obsessed with having the best playthrough in the most efficient way possible. But my main argument against this is what you mentioned later on. While we cant change their minds on how to play minecraft, that doesnt mean we have to play like them, this is a sandbox game through and through where the player gets to decide how they play. And its good that youre attempting to slow down and try and do what you want to do. And honestly imo the best examples of youtubers playing minecraft for fun are the people from hermitcraft, seeing them do their own thing and creating memories with each other and online is what makes minecraft (to me at least) fun. 8:00 now this is an interesting reason for liking beta. I think thats fair and its why i enjoy games like no mans sky when im exploring their planets, it feels empty and i like exploring a place that no one has ever been to. However, an easy rebuttle to this is by turning off "generate structures". Thats the best way to recreate that same feeling, and id argue it would be even cooler if it meant you could make your own village from scratch thanks to villager zombies being a spawnable entity. 9:00 this last one is a pretty good viewpoint on "less is more". However while i agree that creativity is at its best when you have limited blocks to use, that doesnt mean it cant be the same as modern minecraft, Building in survival has its benefits by being more rewarding when you obtain a new block that fits your build. Hell ive been so happy with the addition of bamboo planks because i now can create some wonderful houses out of the funny green sticks. Again this isnt a big issue i have because i understand the sentiment. honestly i have to say again i do like this video, its well structured and while i dont think your points are convincing that doesnt mean they arent valid, they make a good point that beta has alot to offer even if it doesnt have as much as modern minecraft, and i think its fair to not like how mojang has managed minecraft recently. I just wish the community would stop making scare tactics in order to sell that the game is hopeless and needs an overhaul.
As a casual player that only really touches the game like once a year for the 2 weeks long server with friends, it is hilarious to me to find out how much minecraft devs suck. Like I've heard bad things but wow.
if you really like beta then i’d highly recommend the b1.7.3 mod: better than adventure. it’s like a glimpse into the path minecraft would’ve taken if the adventure update(s) never happened. it manages to add quite a lot of new features while maintaining the feel and simplicity of beta, i highly recommend it.
I agree about the market place and will like to add the suffocating all over your face aggressive marketing for realms when in reality both options are offered by the community with better qualities and offers
4:15 Armadillo is not part of the "Tricky Trials" update; it has its own mini-themed update called "Armored Paws" (1.20.5) 4:52 Elytra was added in the 1.9 "Combat Update" (2016) and you could only repair it with leather in the anvil. Phantoms were added later in 1.13 (2018)
Another thing i like about beta or old minecraft in general is the textures they look so much nicer in building. back then a cobblestone oak wood and sand looked great together these days do that and it looks hideous with the new textures
the crunchy textures were the best. Everything looks cohesive but "muddy" and don't get me started on how they desaturated all of the colors. The did water dirty.
I'm glad you touched on adding redundant gimmicky things. Having to add a new mob just to make signs and item frames easier to see and a new mob to add yet another scute that serves even less purpose than turtle scutes is just unnecessary. Dog armor could have been implemented without armadillos needing to win the mob vote, and we lost out on the crab claw which would have been a genuinely useful item that I don't see a good way of implementing with what's currently in the game. Now that the mob vote is gone I think we should be seeing a lot less of these ridiculous additions to the game. The Creaking has some cool functionality so I have faith that Mojang can continue come up with interesting and meaningful additions and changes to the game. But of course "less is more" is a saying for a reason and for some people adding more stuff will inherently detract from the game. I can't argue that they're wrong to enjoy a simpler version of the game.
Although i do appreciate beta and find it more enjoyable than minecraft modern, playing it more than I have ever played modern , I think alot more credit has to be given towards the full versions of the game, specifcally in the form of either legacy for consoles, or 1.8.9 Java that accomplish that simplicity without the sins of modern minecraft
about the concept art... i honestly have no problem with them posting/showing concept art, its really nice to see really beautiful official art of "what could be" but i wish they wouldve said "heres some concept art for the update, but keep in mind, not everything you see here will be in the update" which to my memory, they didnt do... OR they couldve just posted it on Twitter when the update was way past release just to show everyone "hey look at this beautiful artwork our artists did"
try playing this "modernbeta" server, its on the latest version of minecraft but theyre trying to make it indistinguishable from actual beta, boxblair's made a video on it so far and is making a series on it, the player base is pretty chill too.

To be fair, that bed explosion mechanic is as old as the nether itself

The biggest problem I have with removing fireflies because they kill frogs - They then made the frogs eat LITTERAL MOLTEN ROCK CUBES!
When frogs eat magma cubes - they poop out a light block. How in the hell is that *better* than fireflies???
Its not!
I can understand that, because those are fictional things, specially that light block. And I don't think a kid would have an easy way to get magma.
and I think Mojang believes that children are, even a little, intelligent. Because otherwise they would have removed things like golden carrots or potions based on spider eyes.
they couldve just added fireflies and make it so frogs DONT eat them loll, id still much rather that than not having them
there is no real life equivalent to magma cubes, so whatever wild interaction frogs can have with them is completely void of any real life consequences, and adding fireflies that don't do anything would have had people complain THAT they don't do anything
It probably gets the “youre the last of your kind” done well, but alone you are not
And people want EVEN more features lol
@@D0cSpotRespectable
Yeah, dog meat for the Chinese community.
Minecraft could use a food/cooking update. There's a reason why mods like Farmer's Delight are so popular
A redstoner or even painter would be cool
i feel like one reason that i like old minecraft that no one talks about, is that it has more frames
SO TRUE! i hate having 15 fps in newer versions T_T
the newer versions are so unoptimized
"very long yapping session" lenght: 11 minutes. That is not long.
yea, usually it's 30+ minutes
your mention of bloat in the game is definitely one my biggest problems with it too, there is SO many items, mobs, features, etc in this game that have like 1 purpose (IF ANY, BTW) and most of the time that purpose is for something that has…no purpose, like something i saw someone mention recently is how we should get a cooking update, and they said this specific thing “we already have all the ingredients” and this, THIS was a prime example of the games bloat, like what fucking purpose do sweet berries and cocoa beans serve, why tf can we only make cookies with cocoa beans, this is just one example of the many situations this occurs in minecraft and i just wish everything served a meaningful purpose rather than just existing for no reason
I do mostly agree (although coca beans are the exception because they can make brown dye.)
One thing to point out how it's different from terraria, which has 3.3 times more items than minecraft, is that terraria has groups of items, and if it's not in a group, then its used for a lot of things.
you have tools of each metal,
furniture for each building block,
specific loot for each boss.
it's all very organized and you can find a use for everything.
want this item that increases the amount of summons you have? guess what, you can upgrade it not once, but twice.
what about that sword forged from hell? you can upgrade that into a really cool weapon, which can be upgraded again, and then again into the best weapon in the game.
don't even get me started on base materials.
in minecraft, you have these turtle shells that can be used for a potion and a helmet that gives you 5 seconds of water breathing. thats it.
what about the sniffer? it gives you flowers? what do they do? oh nothing.
all these cool new (passive) mobs they added to this game. i wonder what they drop.

Cocoa beans and sweet berries are a pretty bad example. Cocoa beans are used for brown dye, and a decoration block. Berry bushes are also used for decoration, food, can be farmed with foxes, etc.
it's not a fucking rpg, not everything needs a fucking "useful purpose" in a sandbox game.

Microsoft isn’t even that involved in modern Minecraft, plus changing versions is still the same game.
The devs work hard and need respect, look at the Nether Update for example,
I really think Minecraft could use an update similar to what the developer of Mosa Lina did - an update that *removes* a lot of the bloat, with some option to re-add them as an extra feature/datapack.
Nostalgia is a really big barrier to get past but when you do you will enjoy a lot more out of life.
so a sandbox game should remove all the things that are not in your face enough because you are never willing to put in the effort to explore new things that might inspire your creativity?, in a game about creativity?,
what about all the useless old features?, what do pigs do that's unique?, what are the uses of lapis?, have you ever actually crafted gold tools?, are they bloat?, should Mojang remove those "useless" features?,
who is forcing you to speed run diamond tools and armor?
or is it all just nostalgia speaking?
I started playing beta again when the chat report update was being pushed and haven't played modern since. The instance I booted up 1.7.3 I felt like I was 9 years old all over again, I have since revisited classic non-beta versions and playing old school modpacks like tekkit.
man... tekkit brings back memories. Old school IC2 and the original galactic craft. I remember spending many evenings building space stations....

A few changes:
Goats can be milked and brushed for string (that is literally where cashmere comes form) goat milk gives 3 hearts of regen to make it different from normal milk. it is brushed off goat hair from their winter coats). Sniffer can also be used to find dungeons, mineshafts, trial chambers, strongholds, and ancient cities.
my god... Decreasing mob projectile accuracy... You sir, need a raise! Fuckin great idea
I used to play on beta servers before they have become popular. back in 2018 - 2022 when the last beta server i played shut down permanently, i made a lot of memories on those servers (betalands. Oldhaven and Beyta)
Unpopular opinion but the glow squid is better than the sniffer
wait your so right about using glowstone for the glowing signs 😭😭😭😭😭

I cant actually write something supportive about your big comment I agree with but man... if enchantings were in beta 1.7.3 I would be so happy
*The villager update was the breakin point for me. No more modern, gonna stick with 1.7.10 now.*
Why?
I’ve just been terraforming and building up a town
It’s been really fun
started playing beta again 😭😭😭 THE NOSTALGIA
About frogs and fireflies...
... you can WILLINGLY poison a parrot with cocoa seeds.
I really hope they have the previous mobs voters too because there are 11 Mobs that Mojang needs to add from the vote
"we didn't want to poison frogs"
meanwhile several flowers in the game are toxic to cats but i don't see those pollen-y bitches getting removed.
"also have this ugly ass pokemon camel thing that just sniffs up entirely decorative plants"
while i agree the weird narrative focus that minecraft took after Jeb took the reigns was odd and set at odds with the more personal nature of the experience, especially in the latest few updates, I can't help but love the 1.16 update personally just for how much more interesting it made exploring the nether in a way that didn't feel too out of place but I obviously missed some updates from hermiting in 1.7.10 for so long (largely due to modding)
You don't play modern minecraft because you don't like it. I don't play modern minecraft because I have a potato for a pc. We are not the same.
haha yeah its pretty unoptimized! its a shame for some people its near unplayable without optifine or sodium. youd think they wouldve done something about it already 😭
@@D0cSpot its still unplayable with optifine. its now obselete. obsalete. obsalty

@@Zahrul3 MAX??? WHAT DO YOU USE?? A QUANTUM COMPUTER???? DO YOU HAVE 8 1TB RAM AND 16 RTX 4090's?? minecraft has such a shit optimization that going above 16 chunks just lags your game like crazy.
Been 7+ years since I played minecraft. You had just expressed everything I had thought. Well done
The biggest problem with modern Minecraft is the feature:mechanic ratio. There are far few many THINGS and far too few *things to do* in Minecraft. How many "systems" are there in Minecraft?
1. Trading (a mechanic which literally turns Hard difficulty into a difficulty easier than peaceful)
2. Brewing (which is a terrible system as potions are ridiculously underpowered for unstackable items)
3. Bartering (not really a system because there is only one way to interact with this mechanic and that is by giving a piglin gold),
4. Enchanting (extremely boring and grindy and made unnecessarily hard by the pointless "too expensive!" mechanic which Mojang have refused to remove or at least come up with a method to circumnavigate it. You HAVE to start enchanting a new item from scratch if you run into this)
5. Redstone
6. Breeding (can be used on llamas, horses, donkeys and mules to get better traits but the process is agonisingly boring and grindy)
7. Archeology (not really a system as there is only one way to interact with it; by brushing blocks)
Everything.
Redstone????
@@Cyberrjey001 I think redstone's a great mechanic, but everything else could definitely be fleshed out and expanded upon.
The bigger caves make it so much harder to mine IMO
The reason armadillo skuts are in the game it's because of wolf armor turtle skuts just wouldn't work
the thing with splitting the updates, is they were gonna do it all in one update.
but a global pandemic somewhat stunted development
But the nether update was released in the summer of 2020. The cave update was split in two but that was 2021/2022
A giant mistake but not enough to play beta they should’ve made all of that different updates and not announce it all for one
When they released minecrat dungeons, that was the turning point. the snapping point.
Banging video. I agree with almost 100% of the video i just have a few more nitpicks but we are basically on the same wavelength
I still want 2-pixel bug :
despite not actually playing it when it came out, my first memories of minecraft was actually of beta (probably). i remember watching a lot of a youtube series of a group of friends playing minecraft when i was younger, and they had no hunger, so obviously before 1.8 beta.
then i got minecraft and was super confused when i saw the hunger bar. dunno exactly when i got minecraft but it was probably some time between 2012-2014.
anyways i've been playing some beta recently and i feel like i can actually just jump in and build instead of doing things, which is a nice change of pace. i'm considering creating a beta server for my friends, since it wouldn't be much of a time commitment if they don't want it to, and they all don't have much time with school and work. but i haven't run it by them yet.
also sadly i no longer remember who i watched that made me into minecraft. but i think i remember them spewing some conspiracy shit that i believed cause i was like 6 (but promptly forgot about) so maybe it's a good thing
Few things.
First off, this video is great.
Second, just making sure you know that the armadillo and wolf varients are part of their own update (1.20.5 armored paws update)
Third, there is a setting to disable structures.
thank you! and yeah, that was an oversight on my behalf. completely forgot. i usually assume they add the mob vote winner into the whole big update haha, want expecting them to add them so quickly!
@@D0cSpotQuestion, do you sometimes play modern?
Watching this video made me realize and myself how Minecraft is now and then and then made me come to the conclusion, but I’m gonna give data a try but still play the newer releases.
i hope you find it enjoyable!! :)
I agree, bloating is a problem within the game rn, Good Video Essay❤

I agree that Beta is not better than Modern Minecraft, and that both have their charms and draws.
There's a whole discussion worth of ideas that i have that i feel lead to where we are now, and my personal thoughts and opinions, but ill keep it short and say that:
I think we were bound to get to this point later rather than sooner.
I dont play beta, I build like If I was still in beta. I have NEVER once changed my building style and I'm proud of what I can make with this style.

@@samcraft3true question is, how THE FUCK is docspot?
This is the reason why I play modded Minecraft, I don't really care about the main-line updates since they lack substance and impact and mostly "for me" I came from pre-classic before alpha/beta...The latest item that actually is cool is the breeze balls and the mace, that is it and it's sad... For modded I prefer mods like Mekanism for 1.12.2 and Create for 1.18.2 - 1.20.1
And not to mention the bad idea to add chat reporting to a block game...
Anyone has any thoughts on the topic?
Chat reporting isn’t that bad, it is bad but people hate it too much, y’all forget we’re in 2024, plus, there are many other cooler items, like the trial spawner keys, new effects, enchantments, even paintings and discs.
dont forget about the chat reporting feature
Now you feel how I felt ever since 1.6.4 ... only bloatware garbage added ...
Sorry for the long essay, but i see no one bringing up this point so here it goes:
The Modern Minecraft Terrain Generation Problem-
I'm going to postulate that the problem started with the Elytra.
The armadillos have actually been added before 1.21 in it's own minor update, Armored Paws.
forgoing the absolutely enrapturing sense of otherworldy mysticism that minecraft used to have in exchange for milquetoast and uninspired corporate coated animals from real life is absolutely the biggest offence to me.
Oh boy time to yap:
overall its fair to not like a version, and honestly this is the best video ive seen discussing modern minecraft vs beta. There really isnt a clear winner and i like that this feels more of an argument for how good beta minecraft is to this day, it does make me want to try and play an old version as a challenge one day. But, that being said i do like yapping and breaking down the reasonings for people's opinions and i wanna point out the minor issues i have with your arguments:
1:16 this one is fair, the past few updates included some nice stuff out of context but with how the caves and cliffs update was handled... it definitely felt underwhelming to see the vision of the update being split into 3 parts.
Wow what a great video! I agree with pretty much all your points :)

Great video! I feel the same exact way.
The did water dirty.
yo docspot i think you'd enjoy the old school minecraft server. there is a cool community that enjoy the beta minecraft. we play on 1.7.3 beta
I always thought modern minecraft was too overstimulating and had too much stuff

My issue with Beta is that I get bored fast compared to modern Minecraft. The block pallet so much limited and with less mobs to interact with.
