    I love the ingenuity in a lot of Minecraft beta builds, i remember when people would dispense fish into ice blocks to make aquariums, and make slab floors to build sleeping bags. I feel like it really makes sense why “Build hack” tutorials were so prevalent back then. People wanted to build so much but they had so little to work with. I remember being so amazed when people used trapdoors for flower pots and now that seems so simple

    I really love the more limited palette and build style in Beta, most builds in modern Minecraft just blend together for me because they're all the same super-detailed builds with depth and smooth palettes. On the other hand, this is what I've observed from builds in Beta:
    - They tend to use the world itself
    - They heavily lean towards using blocks according to what they're meant to be, rather than their color. Meanwhile, a lot of builds in modern Minecraft use random blocks that wouldn't typically belong in what the build is meant to represent (e.g, mud walls/floors in a mansion because they're brown).
    - IF the build needs something that isn't in the game, it's approximated creatively. E.g, sign chairs, wool curtains, flat-screen TVs made of black wool with noteblocks to the sides with trapdoors on them, etc.
    - This is more of a gameplay thing, but they feel WAY bigger since the player wasn't able to move or fly super fast like in modern Minecraft

      @Nettom_Minecraft  Год назад +52

      Wow, yeah, that is true! :D I like both buolding styles very much. I just love the complexities of modern building, in strong contrast to the simplicity of beta. In modern building, I can manipulate every little detail, even use the debug stick if I feel fancy to create the most detail. And if I need a break from all that, I can always return to beta, where I dont really need to think. I can just sort of do and have fun. :D

      THIS! Beta building mostly followed the lay of the land and didn't try to terraform half the world to fit the build but rather adapt the build to the world. This is both because it was way harder to terraform massive stretches of land then (which was a good thing), but also because the natural terrain gen was much more interesting and players appreciated that. Once it switched to a semi "realistic" type of terrain people very quickly started to treat it as disposable.

    • @Nettom_Minecraft
      @Nettom_Minecraft  Год назад +13

      @@dicecard921 yeah! that makes sense! :D the more realistic terrain was just boring and it's understandable that people kinda stopped using the terrain itself. :D

      i find this opinion to be very ironic. simply because the game is giving you more options, does not mean you need to use them. it is fascinating that people do not set up that challenge or limitation for themselves. over Covid we had an SMP world where i found my self obsessing to be efficient like most modern minecrafters and doing these huge builds i need to collect every resource for. its exhausting and eventually makes the game less enjoyable. i recently started a world and have taken a different approach; treating it as we played it back in older versions, with more limits, or rather, instead of scrambling to gather every resource, making little builds with whatever blocks we have on hand, and connecting them with not as efficient roads and minecarts. you can quite literally play beta minecraft in modern minecraft. especially with resource packs. the world gen is just too good.

    • @ShiroCh_ID
      @ShiroCh_ID 11 месяцев назад +3

      @@cinnamonroll5659 i just recently plan to do just that on my series! and try to compare it to other builds in that smp later on
      heres my idea, Make a theme for that place, try to adapt the terrain and lastly try to builds with thing in hand to limit the palletes and try to improve or bridge the difference of each build because later on we had more resource we can lazly gather(aka semi creative mode as docm said in one of his hermitcraft s4 or s5)
      obviously by the end of season where we can almost gather anything we can renovate those older builds without changing the theme or even color palletes

    Something about building in beta is that.. for the most part- you can start building what you want RIGHT AWAY. As in, the easiest to obtain resources are usually also, simultaneously, endgame resources. Lots of builds utilize cobble, and there's only 1 type of wood (planks), for example. No need to go looking for special blocks all the way across the world. It's simple.

  • @ModernBetaSMP

    I've always played in solo creative, but survival play has taught me one interesting difference. Between beta and current versions, the more stuff they add, the more and more time is spent trying to acquire the desired building blocks, and then experimenting with those endless building blocks.
    Beta had a very limited pallete like you said, and the amount of usage certain items would get was staggering as compared to modern versions.
    Its a weird paradox where I feel like older versions had more creativity going in to them, because there was just more time allotted for building rather than resource gathering. I guess that is something I miss from the older versions. Just building rather than tinkering (and at times fighting) with the shear intricacy of options and details now available.

    • @Nettom_Minecraft
      @Nettom_Minecraft  11 месяцев назад +3

      Yeah! You explained that so well! That is sort of how I feel sometimes. Not all the time, I love my modern creative building with all the details I can come up with, but sometimes... sometimes it's too much, and I spend most of my time looking for the right blocks instead of just building. In survival even more. I need to gather things before I can build things. I dont even mean basic materials like stone or wood, more like quartz, copper blocks, or any other more late game blocks. I have so much respect for people who can build in survival like they do in creative mode.

    • @therebelofchaos1674
      @therebelofchaos1674 8 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah this is pretty much how I feel a lot of times with modern MC. It isn't horrible, but sometimes it's really annoying to find the blocks that you want in survival, and then on top of that fighting with the direction blocks get placed in now (don't get me wrong it's a nice feature and when you do it enough eventually you get used to it, but as someone who played before stairs and logs were capable of being rotated, it's really annoying when you aim a direction and you think you're looking correctly and end up a pixel off and it flips it the complete opposite way you wanted and then you have to waste time breaking the block/using dura on tools). I also realize this is just a subjective opinion, but older textures were just plain BETTER on a lot of stuff. Cobble, gravel, logs, sandstone, dirt, etc. Now it's hard for me to even consider using that type of stuff in modern MC cause it just looks uglier and there are so many other blocks to choose from, like, why even bother with basic cobble anymore? It leads me to decision paralysis and burnout a lot of times. I like simplicity and out of the box thinking. Even stuff like anvils. In beta if I want an anvil for a blacksmith workshop, I just dig a 1 block hole, put a fencepost in it, put 1 stone slab on top, and then one stone slab connected to the other and that makes an anvil. Now there's just a block for it. Sucks out some of the creativity imo.

    Great video. I'm 28yo late starter who started playing minecraft since 1.16 came out. But I love beta builds because they have some genuine simplicity and creativity made with limited variaty blocks. I've never experienced the real beta age however I know why people keep saying beta is more "minecraft-y".

    This was a really great video! I've been thinking more and more about getting back into Beta Minecraft. I started with Beta 1.6 back in the day and have a ton of really fond memories of those pre-1.0 versions (I stopped playing around 1.0 and didn't pick the game back up until around 1.15).
    Recently I went back and watched season 1 of Etho Plays Minecraft, and it reignited a lot of that nostalgia. So thanks for giving me more confidence to build in Beta, since it's the aspect I'm the most worried about when getting back into it :)

    I've been playing Minecraft off and on since 2009. The alpha/beta style of building is heavily grounded by survival mode where building materials were based on what a thing should be built out of, small house out of wood, castle out of rock, manor out of wood and rock etc. Texturing wasn't really used in survival because it often looks like a mess up close, and didn't make sense from a world building perspective. We used shape instead of texturing to add detail.
    The terrain generator is the best part of beta 1.7.3 there's always some unique terrain to inspire a build. Also this is the last version of Minecraft to be a pure sandbox, there's no villagers, raids, or structures polluting the world so you can make up your own lore and world building stories.
    I used stories to inspire builds in my oldest surviving alpha map. It might be as simple as who lives in this house, are they rich? how many kids?. To the more in depth hidden cult of the creeper, or why was this city built in the middle of a desert in the first place?

    About half a year ago, I have started a Better than Adventure! (Beta 1.7.3 fork mod) server, which I have kept online since.
    This world is filled with all kinds of builds of different scales, palettes and intricacy of design, stretching far from spawn.
    While BTA! builds might look "worse" than modern MC ones, they have a strong charm and you appreciate the creative solutions used in them more.
    Due to the slow movement everything is closer together, which makes exploring the world and finding all kinds of different builds fun.
    Having personally been fully burned out by modern MC a few years back, BTA! is what made me love and play (Beta) Minecraft again.

    I really like the limited palette more than the massive one we have today for a couple big reasons
    One is that with such a small amount of blocks and an even smaller amount that could reasonably be used well in a build, the world feels a lot more cohesive. Every build fits in with each other, but at the same time it doesn’t feel like there’s a lack of creativity
    In fact, I’d say the limited palette really helped push that creativity. So many modern builds I see feel like the same house with slightly different shapes and different blocks. But when you can’t rely on using a unique set of blocks, you need to focus on making your build itself unique. I remember back when I first started, I’d hop on servers and see airships and big villages and pixel art everywhere.
    Now, somehow it feels all too samey but also everything clashes, whereas in beta, everything would feel connected, but you really got to see everyone’s creativity on full display despite the limitations

    Everyone must know slab can only be half bottom or full but never half top
    I found out about this after playing for few months
    And I like beta is because it's simpler not because it's challenge and I think that's also a fair point. I just can build while in newer versions I spent too much time choosing blocks or I'll just choose the blocks I usually use over and over again and it ends up looking weird in newer versions

    Very well edited, and I've been looking for more Beta-centric Minecraft content
    The new stuff builders do is neat, like the texturing and making gradients out of loads of blocks and stuff, but I feel a bit of a pressure to make super complex stuff now because of that. Like idk it feels like we have a higher standard now for builds if that makes sense. Although of course I'm the only person who's gonna make me do those things, nobody's forcing me but..
    But as a result of that I've been drawn recently to more simple, sort of classic Minecraft building styles, so it's neat you're bringing this sort of thing to light. Very cool vid

      Thank you so much. :D I do feel very similar to you. I want to return this year to a bit more modern minecraft content, but beta has definitely grown on me to be that "second minecraft." That more simple Minecraft.
      If I ever need a break from all the blocks and all the complexity. I can come to this and just chill. It's like a little break. Or like a vacation. Modern minecraft, if you take away all the nostalgia, is a great game, and beta minecraft is a great game, too. It kinda feels like they are 2 different games, but the same franchise... :)
