Took me a year to diagnose my driveshaft on my k1500. I did 2 alignments at 2 different shops, tire rebalancing and rotations and the driveshaft balance was something I was unaware of at the time and was a Hail Mary call. Wish I would have seen this years ago!
To diagnose by feel and sound is an art my friend. I hope some young people see this and are inspired because we need more mechanics going forward, or we will soon run out of this type of talent. Great job.
When I worked for Ford as a mechanic, my main job was as a NVH troubleshooter, yes, a lot of moving parts have different frequencies that you have to chase, great challenge to isolate.
Thanks Kenny! Didn't help me with my problem but a very educational video none the less. I'm 56 and still value learning things that can and will save me money. I'm not a mechanic but I'm still the one doing all the work on our cars thanks to guys like you sharing the knowledge on utube. THANKS!!

Well now maybe can fix it. And sell. And get a little cash back. I love this guy. Can't believe now i found this. 😂 Live and learn.
This video is the one that I needed to see because I have a 94 Chevy S10 that has a vibration and I just replaced the ujoints and the carrier bearing and I changed the plugs and wires this morning and it still has a vibration
I'm being chased by axles lately! I just rebuilt a Dana 45... yes 45 and that was my first time in this world - it was kinda ugly. The upper and lower axle arms on my 64 Bonneville I just had to re-bush with liquid poly. Seems, like you say, things come in waves. I once bought a 1967 MGB that had a terrible vibration and the guy was sick and tired of the whole car... believe that or not, and it was only a clump of mud on the driveshaft. After cleaning it was fine and I offered the car back to the guy and he laughed and said "you keep it man". I hope you get to rebuild this unit and I'd love to see your methods on this. I've watched many videos on axle rebuilds now and it seems everyone has slightly differing (Punny huh) methods and your ways are simple and work well every time. I'll be watching! Bobby
Get it to the speed it's vibrating then shift it into nutrail if the vibration goes away it's engine or transmission, if it is still vibrating it's tailshaft bushing towards driveshaft back and possibly rear end.
Really interesting thanks. My landrover defender has a vibration issue. 4th to 5th gear 40 to 53 mph up an incline.Quick vibration felt a little through the steering wheel and front prop. However front prop is new, rear one is solid no play into diff both greased. Topped both diffs, swapped wheels around. Got it booked into the professionals.
I had that same stop driveshaft thud coming to a stop in my uncle's 92 Silverado. I fixed it easy, some one flip the drive shaft connection to the rear end and it was off balance just flip it 180°
Rebel the more cutter drive shaft I'm 80 years old Well I was 20 We would put them in the car Drive shaft Take a soapstone and build a bracket and move it over till it just touches the drive shaft wherever it touched well the weight on the other side Move it over 1-in doing it again two three times sometimes four times to get a line of soapstone all the way around the drive shaft
The Ford two piece driveshaft is notorious for having the slip bump issue. There’s no real way to fix it, you can take it apart and grease it, but it’s a short term fix. The bad part is that it shoves into the front shaft and carrier bearing which destroys it. It’s made to be non serviceable, therefore requires a replacement driveshaft to be installed. Very expensive from Ford. My driveshaft ruined both the carrier bearing and the transfer case. Truck had a horrible vibration that didn’t go away even after the driveshaft was replaced with an aftermarket one. The limited slip clutches went bad, and it had an IWE fail too. I spent about 10k getting all that fixed in addition to the lower ball joints, and new transmission lines installed before they snapped off unexpectedly as they do with the 6R80 transmission that will be decimated by that happening. I love my truck though, and figured fixing it would be way cheaper than buying a new one that won’t be built any better.

I thank you for giving so much info on the drive shaft here. It really helped me to understand a little bit more about this item. My 2009 fx35 can not be repaired, and I am wondering why. What the reason why not? Now I will have to find one from the junk yard, because INFINITI wants 1500 for a drive shaft PLUS labor. Do you know what I could check on a used shaft to find any defects? The used one will be out of the vehicle. thnx again.
perhaps a wheel/tire issue. bent rim, bad belts in tire, badly balanced or lost weights from last balancing job. I would think if you have a shop with reasonable balancing prices start there, some tire shops warranties give free balance checks if you bought tires there and had them mounted there.
Yes, but you will be uncomfortable. Hi, It's Mrs Wrenching! If you get stuck, go on the Facebook group Wrenching with Kenny (answer all the questions) put the year, make & model of your vehicle in your post. Be sure to include what is happening with your vehicle & what you have done to fix it so far. There are a lot of techs that may be able to help. The link is toward the bottom of the newer videos. Keep wrenching!
So, if the vibration feels like a “driveshaft” vibration, there’s likely something out of balance in the driveline. And if it feels like a wheel bearing, it’s possibly a defective bearing in close proximity to one of the wheels. And if the vibration is in the front end of the vehicle, it’s likely an issue near the front end of the vehicle. Thank you.
Replace bearing on the pinion then check your clearance in your ring gear and pinion should be fine unless you have another unit laying around to exchange it with
South Main Auto just had one where the pinion bearings went after losing most of the oil but the rest was still okay. Look for pinion bearing fro hell.
I have a 2000 f 250 4x4 i have a vibration starting at 53 mph to 58 mph then smooths out!! Not bad just annoying. I put new u joints in, shocks , wheels balance. I put in neutral at those speeds and no difference. Not getting worse samefor 2 year's. I give. Lol. Good video. Thx.
The helical cut gears when in good shape are made to be smooth and quiet , but,! I had a 2018 chevy 2500 last week. shook so badly it made the steering wheel vibrate too between 30 - 35 mph. it was the drive shaft U joint. just a caution about drive train not shaking the steering,
@@WrenchingWithKenny I checked U joints they seem flawless , it is lifted with an unknown hight from a previous owner. Has 4" body spacers too in combination with the lift kit. My trans is nearly perfectly horizontal but my pinion angle is nearly diagonal so I wonder if I'm getting a weird spinning shaft at certain speeds.
Driving my Yukon i felt a vibration in the floor. I was the only one who could feel it. The distributor was broken at the ear with the threads to attach the cap. Epoxy.
I hope you get to do that rebuild too … I once bent a driveshaft once after I botched replacing a set of u-joints.. that shaft came loose and flailed around .. Bad vibrations..

I guess I’ll crawl back under this Camaro when I get off work. I parked it in the garage because I couldn’t isolate where this humming grinding noise is coming from. Sounds like it comes from the right rear wheel. But it only does it while accelerating and I feel it in the shifter

I had my rear drive shaft weight pop loose and start hitting my fuel tank gage on a 17 Tundra with 120 on the clock while towing a 4K lb trailer. No vibration though. What about to start when you have a vibration from 45-50 then comes back at 70-80? Then while riding at 75 it vibrates for 4 miles then smooths out for 7-8 miles. Its goes in and out.
