@mattappleton9549 Yessir. You will most certainly need some sort of slip joint in the rear shaft. Unless your link bars are the exact same length as the driveshaft extremely unlikely) your rear driveshaft with need to be able to change length.

I know this is old content, but I’m designing a parallel 4 link rear airbag suspension for my f350, and this was BY FAR, the most helpful, simple to understand, playlist of info I could find anywhere. From setting pinion angle, to simplifying the rectangle shape I need for the links, bushing type, perfection. Thank you for putting this together it should be in mechanical classrooms everywhere!

I’m grateful for you back! I grew up struggling through school with very low self esteem. It wasn’t until long after graduation that I realized I wasn’t a complete moron. Instead it was caused by a mixture of boredom, a lack of challenge and meaningfulness of school, and teachers inability to engage the minds of students. (Some teachers. Others were nothing short of incredible.)

Back in the day , stuffed a 350 in a 240 Z hanging the block in place suspended a few inchs in the engine bay , beefy springs, ,clearance" & drive shaft alignment & stock independent suspension, squat & go came off the alignment of the pinion straight thru , mock tack in place engine mount trans mount, loop, but never went thru u-joints like I did on a charger w balance ds
Within 3° up down but trying to get accurate alignment by lowering block/trans bolted to rear end drive line as weight changes ,torque load changes, no bind no noise no internet" did a solid axel leaf spring VW gasser 327 tunnel ram velocity stack cartoon car no rear fenders 10 in slicks pizza cutters up front, firewall cut for trans tunnel drive shaft was long as forearm 😂 power glide 4:88"s 12 bolt no shocks no springs , bolted to the frame" the white tornado". caged & lite but braking on the end of the 1/8 and get some rear wheel hop fun fun
Great presentation. I see a lot of videos (watched another one right before this) where it is obvious to me that the creator doesn't actually know what they are talking about or care about accurately informing people and they just want to create content. I can tell that you really took the time to understand the subject matter and present it in a way that is easy for people to understand. Well done! The only thing I'd quibble with is that there is an upper limit to which the single joint at each end can work well and run smoothly. Which is usually where the double cardan enters the picture, at least in our world of lifted vehicles like Jeeps. But anyway, great video!. As someone who makes drive shafts and whose life is easier when customers understand things like this, thank you!

I really enjoy the content and the script... it looks like hard work but a lot of fun, too. Whenever I teach a new concept, I go into the lab and fabricate a contraption that illustrates the idea visually. It works for them, and it works for your audience.

@Garage Fab I have a mazda b2200 that I have made an extended cab with a regular bed, never was a factory option. I have built a stock floor frame for it, but not real happy with how it's tied in. The plans going forward to build a new frame from firewall back an build all custom frame instead if trying to tie into the old rear suffrage. After watching some of your videos it makes me want to do a better job, not that there is really anything wrong with what I have I just know I can do better and some of the tips you have show will make it much easier.

My dad repaired a crane and repaired the drive shaft while replacing the motor. He timed the drive shaft that he found to be off 90 degrees. The crane operator claimed he was able to drive the machine at 2x the speed it used to go down the road at. Timing U joints is real!
Thank you for making this. I am always building/working on 4WD vehicles and this series has been so helpful explaining 4 links and pinion angle to my kids. I love how your goal is for and airbag suspension on a lowered vehicle but your explanation is so well done the principles are easy to digest and apply to 4WD rigs and everything else.

I found this video very educational and is motivating me to fix the problem I created. In lowering my 2005 Chevy Silverado LT (I did this so my wife could navigate into the truck) it now has a 25-35 mph vibration. Your video explains well my problem.

This takes me back. As i got wiser to air rides i realized i never checked my pinion angles. Which explains why my “ hacked air shocks” adapted 1/4hard line to 3/8 valves w a semi stock monoleaf setup was absorbing any vibration. After watching emissions guy rev that 1st gear higher an higher the amount of differential gymnastics without a bed i knew it had to be done right. The guy handed me the keys smiling ear to ear an complimented how cool it felt. i was smiling i got to sit in the plexiglass box safely . Good shit man🤙

Absolutely. If you drop the front frame rather than lifting it like I did it will lift the truck. Just keep in mind you don’t get any extra ground clearance under the engine crossmember unless you raise the motor mounts and rebuild that crossmember.

Love the content of your videos! Especially this one regarding driveline angles. I own a driveshaft shop and frequently deal with these issues on customers vehicles. I would like to add that when using a double cardan setup that the rear joint angle going into the pinion should be relatively flat. Often times people think installing a double cardan joint at the transmission side will correct their issues, but they fail to realize that adjusting the pinion angle is also necessary.
Agreed! I tried to make your point clear with the light switch comparison but I’m afraid it got a bit convoluted. I’m considering another video specifically for those that ask, “What joints and what angles should I use for my suspension?” There will be significantly less explanation of WHY each setup would be used in that video since this video already exists. It would be more of a quick reference guide. “You’ve got a 2 link? Install a double Cardan at the trans, a single in the rear, and position your differential about degree below straight with your drive shaft at half-travel.” Thank you for the kind words my friend!
When we evaluated presentations, we were instructed no instruction could recieve all 4's. Per usual, out of the park! This could even be understood in just audio. Best I've ever seen. Going to apply this lesson to the coupe when that time comes over the winter.

This episode is priceless. I don't work on or modify cars, but I just bought a tractor with PTO shaft driven implements. The information you have given me is invaluable to eliminate vibrations in my PTO driven implements.
Man, this is one of the greatest videos I’ve seen for explaining the nuances of drivelines. I frame swapped a 1st gen Tacoma, and get the vibrations over 60. I think I know what to try next to keep moving forward.

nicely done. as an engineer and hobby hot-rodder this is the best and clearest explanation of the mysteries of U-joints that i have seen. once upon a time before i knew the importance of timing the yokes on the shaft, i fabbed one for my 65 el camino and went for a wild ride.....

Greatly appreciate your videos. They are positive and very informative. It is obvious you spend a good amount of time to make them. When talking about the double cardin joint, the U-joints can't be in parallel. Instead, the differential must point up in a straight line toward the output on the transmission/transfer case. I built a 51 Willys Jeep that is far from stock. The rear driveshaft is 15 1/2 inches long. It had to have a double cardin at the transfer case and a single U-joints at the differential which points straight at the transfer case output. The Jeep runs perfectly smooth running down the highway. There was only one driveshaft company that would make that shaft for me. I use them every time I build an off road/on road vehicle.. Thanks again for your videos. Maybe you could do one on driveshaft/U-joints angles using the double cardin.

(Especially since the next truck won’t have one. 🤔) But I suppose a video on how to determine angles and how to change them in various types of suspension would be helpful.
Some RUclipsrs post every day....... To me, that's nuts. Yes, RUclipsrs can generate a lot of money. Their channel turned from fun to a full time job... which may take the fun out because of the pressure to produce. Best to find an equilibrium. Produce when it feels right. If daily or weekly, monthly or randomly works, then do what works. This Old Tony took a long break for personal reasons. He's not back as often, but I think his followers, like yours, simply find a new video like an unexpected present. This is the first time I've seen your channel. I'm very impressed. I’m glad I stumbled across your vid here! And a excellent vid on top of that! I’ve been building cars for a very long time and almost made the rookie mistake of welding my 4 link brackets to the rear end before I ever set my motor and trans in to get the trans angle! You just saved me 100’s & 100’s of dollars worth of chromoly and tons of hours worth of grinding and re-welding time! I’m building a 1995 s10 drag truck big tire and stretched 12 inches for the pro mod extended front clip 98-2000 model. Motor and trans will be pushed back 12 inches and centered. Also on a good note it’s just as important for people to center their pinions left to right as well as up and down depending on the suspension set up. I have to move my rear end 15/16 to the drivers side so it’s centered with my trans. So the drivers axle will be shorter than the passengers side

I am not a racer or a race car builder, so a lot of this is still a mystery to me. Why must a differential be centered? Is it simply a weight/balance thing?
Your props and video editing make all the difference in the world and is the obvious difference between your "new" channel and every other startup channel on You Tube. Things as simple as the playing with the aperture during still shots. mics, and transitions are near production levels. So if your doing it yourself.. Wow. If your paying someone to do it, it is money WELL spent. Obviously your personality, speech cadence and continuity are either natural or well trained. KUDOS to you.
Words cannot express how much that means to me my friend. You mentioned things that I assumed the majority of people wouldn’t notice. It’s a one-man-band at the moment. I hope one day to at least have an editor but the funding just isn’t there yet. I’ve been a photographer since I was 13 including being a professional wedding photographer for 7ish years. I’ve always had an interest in Hollywood and behind the scenes stuff. This is why you’ll often get mini sketches in the middle of a video. It’s just fun to create. This video is absolutely insane. I've been fighting a transmission/pinion angle misalignment on my lowered LS swapped s10 and this gave me so much insight into how to diagnosis my issue. Ultimately I will need to go to a 4 link, but this gives me some ideas in how I can fix my pinion angle issues prior to that. Thank you so much for the effort you put into this video!
That is an amazing video! Even thought I understand the concept now it took a lot of reading and research to figure out! I wish this video where up years ago. If I was a fibber, quite a few people would be under the impression that I was a genius. In disguise, as “just a dumb construction worker”, because that’s what I call myself. I am not, so I have shared you, and your content as much as possible. Not one single person, interested in doing this type of work/play or not, has been able to say they didn’t enjoy the watch. You’re truly gifted with attention - retention and information - transfer. Most can’t communicate half as good, standing right in front of you these days. Absolute Respect. And you not only made my build possible, with confidence but all the other big words “smart” people use to sound …smart. It’s no surprise you got 7000 new followers will not putting up new content, i’ve watched almost every video at least five times myself. Bagging a 64 C10 long bed with a two piece drive shaft. Do you suggest using a slip yoke in the rear.
@mattappleton9549 Yessir. You will most certainly need some sort of slip joint in the rear shaft. Unless your link bars are the exact same length as the driveshaft extremely unlikely) your rear driveshaft with need to be able to change length.

I know this is old content, but I’m designing a parallel 4 link rear airbag suspension for my f350, and this was BY FAR, the most helpful, simple to understand, playlist of info I could find anywhere. I’m grateful for you back! I grew up struggling through school with very low self esteem. It wasn’t until long after graduation that I realized I wasn’t a complete moron. Instead it was caused by a mixture of boredom, a lack of challenge and meaningfulness of school, and teachers inability to engage the minds of students. (Some teachers. Others were nothing short of incredible.)

Back in the day , stuffed a 350 in a 240 Z hanging the block in place suspended a few inchs in the engine bay , beefy springs, ,clearance" & drive shaft alignment & stock independent suspension, squat & go came off the alignment of the pinion straight thru , mock tack in place engine mount trans mount, loop, but never went thru u-joints like I did on a charger w balance ds
Within 3° up down but trying to get accurate alignment by lowering block/trans bolted to rear end drive line as weight changes ,torque load changes, no bind no noise no internet" did a solid axel leaf spring VW gasser 327 tunnel ram velocity stack cartoon car no rear fenders 10 in slicks pizza cutters up front, firewall cut for trans tunnel drive shaft was long as forearm 😂 power glide 4:88"s 12 bolt no shocks no springs , bolted to the frame" the white tornado". caged & lite but braking on the end of the 1/8 and get some rear wheel hop fun fun
Great presentation. I see a lot of videos (watched another one right before this) where it is obvious to me that the creator doesn't actually know what they are talking about or care about accurately informing people and they just want to create content. I can tell that you really took the time to understand the subject matter and present it in a way that is easy for people to understand. Well done! The only thing I'd quibble with is that there is an upper limit to which the single joint at each end can work well and run smoothly. Which is usually where the double cardan enters the picture, at least in our world of lifted vehicles like Jeeps. But anyway, great video!. As someone who makes drive shafts and whose life is easier when customers understand things like this, thank you!

@Garage Fab I have a mazda b2200 that I have made an extended cab with a regular bed, never was a factory option. I have built a stock floor frame for it, but not real happy with how it's tied in. The plans going forward to build a new frame from firewall back an build all custom frame instead if trying to tie into the old rear suffrage. After watching some of your videos it makes me want to do a better job, not that there is really anything wrong with what I have I just know I can do better and some of the tips you have show will make it much easier.
I just purchased my first truck (2000 s-10) and this channel has helped be understand the ins and outs of air ride. Thanks to you I will be creating a safe vehicle. Thank you.

My dad repaired a crane and repaired the drive shaft while replacing the motor. He timed the drive shaft that he found to be off 90 degrees. The crane operator claimed he was able to drive the machine at 2x the speed it used to go down the road at. Timing U joints is real!

I love how your goal is for and airbag suspension on a lowered vehicle but your explanation is so well done the principles are easy to digest and apply to 4WD rigs and everything else.

This takes me back. As i got wiser to air rides i realized i never checked my pinion angles. Which explains why my “ hacked air shocks” adapted 1/4hard line to 3/8 valves w a semi stock monoleaf setup was absorbing any vibration. After watching emissions guy rev that 1st gear higher an higher the amount of differential gymnastics without a bed i knew it had to be done right. The guy handed me the keys smiling ear to ear an complimented how cool it felt. i was smiling i got to sit in the plexiglass box safely . Good shit man🤙

Absolutely. If you drop the front frame rather than lifting it like I did it will lift the truck. Just keep in mind you don’t get any extra ground clearance under the engine crossmember unless you raise the motor mounts and rebuild that crossmember.

Love the content of your videos! Especially this one regarding driveline angles. I own a driveshaft shop and frequently deal with these issues on customers vehicles.
I would like to add that when using a double cardan setup that the rear joint angle going into the pinion should be relatively flat. Often times people think installing a double cardan joint at the transmission side will correct their issues, but they fail to realize that adjusting the pinion angle is also necessary.
Agreed! I tried to make your point clear with the light switch comparison but I’m afraid it got a bit convoluted.
I’m considering another video specifically for those that ask, “What joints and what angles should I use for my suspension?”
There will be significantly less explanation of WHY each setup would be used in that video since this video already exists. It would be more of a quick reference guide. “You’ve got a 2 link? Install a double Cardan at the trans, a single in the rear, and position your differential about degree below straight with your drive shaft at half-travel.”

When we evaluated presentations, we were instructed no instruction could recieve all 4's. Per usual, out of the park! This could even be understood in just audio. Best I've ever seen. Going to apply this lesson to the coupe when that time comes over the winter.

This episode is priceless. I don't work on or modify cars, but I just bought a tractor with PTO shaft driven implements. The information you have given me is invaluable to eliminate vibrations in my PTO driven implements.

I watched a bunch of pinion angle videos and read through so many forum threads and not a single one thought to mention the importance of ensuring that the u-joints are “in-phase”. It might be something so obvious and simple that nobody else imagined that someone could mess that up… but yeah I really appreciate you helping me to fix my 96 bronco’s driveline.

When talking about the double cardin joint, the U-joints can't be in parallel. Instead, the differential must point up in a straight line toward the output on the transmission/transfer case. I built a 51 Willys Jeep that is far from stock. The rear driveshaft is 15 1/2 inches long. It had to have a double cardin at the transfer case and a single U-joints at the differential which points straight at the transfer case output. The Jeep runs perfectly smooth running down the highway. There was only one driveshaft company that would make that shaft for me. I use them every time I build an off road/on road vehicle..

Some RUclipsrs post every day....... To me, that's nuts. Yes, RUclipsrs can generate a lot of money. Their channel turned from fun to a full time job... which may take the fun out because of the pressure to produce. Best to find an equilibrium. Produce when it feels right. If daily or weekly, monthly or randomly works, then do what works.
This Old Tony took a long break for personal reasons. He's not back as often, but I think his followers, like yours, simply find a new video like an unexpected present.

I’m glad I stumbled across your vid here! And a excellent vid on top of that! I’ve been building cars for a very long time and almost made the rookie mistake of welding my 4 link brackets to the rear end before I ever set my motor and trans in to get the trans angle! You just saved me 100’s & 100’s of dollars worth of chromoly and tons of hours worth of grinding and re-welding time! I’m building a 1995 s10 drag truck big tire and stretched 12 inches for the pro mod extended front clip 98-2000 model. Motor and trans will be pushed back 12 inches and centered. Also on a good note it’s just as important for people to center their pinions left to right as well as up and down depending on the suspension set up. I have to move my rear end 15/16 to the drivers side so it’s centered with my trans. So the drivers axle will be shorter than the passengers side

Why must a differential be centered? Is it simply a weight/balance thing?
Your props and video editing make all the difference in the world and is the obvious difference between your "new" channel and every other startup channel on You Tube. Things as simple as the playing with the aperture during still shots. mics, and transitions are near production levels. So if your doing it yourself.. Wow. If your paying someone to do it, it is money WELL spent. Obviously your personality, speech cadence and continuity are either natural or well trained. KUDOS to you.
Words cannot express how much that means to me my friend. You mentioned things that I assumed the majority of people wouldn’t notice. It’s a one-man-band at the moment. I hope one day to at least have an editor but the funding just isn’t there yet. I’ve been a photographer since I was 13 including being a professional wedding photographer for 7ish years. I’ve always had an interest in Hollywood and behind the scenes stuff. This is why you’ll often get mini sketches in the middle of a video. It’s just fun to create.

This video is absolutely insane. I've been fighting a transmission/pinion angle misalignment on my lowered LS swapped s10 and this gave me so much insight into how to diagnosis my issue. Ultimately I will need to go to a 4 link, but this gives me some ideas in how I can fix my pinion angle issues prior to that. Thank you so much for the effort you put into this video!
