- In this video I picked up a brand new Suzuki 15 horse power direct fuel injection outboard motor for my 14 ft aluminum boat. I showed what it looked like inside the manufacture box and did an unboxing and first impression of the motor. I then showed what the motor looked like sitting on my boat. My girlfriend and I then took the boat and motor onto the lake to go through the Suzuki Motor break in steps. If you do not know how to break-in an outboard motor, make sure to check this video out. At the very end of the video after out motor break-in is mostly completed, we also did a top speed run of this new motor. It sure get us to places in a hurry! I don't have any experience with the other brand, but I would definitely recommend the suzuki!! A lot of fishing guides also use suzuki for its reliability. Hey - great video; I am retiring my 1993 30hp Yamaha and shopping for a new, smaller motor. The dealer near me (outside Orillia ONT) has a 15hp Suzuki electric start in stock, and your video is what put me over the top; I'm buying that new suzuki! Thanks for posting a great video.
It has been working magically for me so far. I have never pulled more than twice to start it all summer. And it's so quiet and good on gas. I think you'll really enjoy it too!!!

Me too - I alawys keep a spare on the boat - this is mainly in case pilto is ejected with key on wrist and enable another on board to restart the motor and recover pilot.
Hahahaha... I'm usually the pilot.. hope I never get ejected.. but two keys might be the key tho. Haha
I have bought two Suzuki tiller motors in crate. 15hp 4 stroke and 25hp 4 stroke. I’m 61 and have owned many brands new and used. The Suzuki is far and away the best of the big name motors in these sizes. The 25hp was 3 cylinder power tilt and trim, an amazing Engine !
The 15hp is so fuel efficient and will troll all day as slow as you want. 3 gallons last for two days of plunking on the river.
Don’t hesitate to buy if these sizes are you cup of tea ! 5*’s

And like you said, it trolls in the water so slow that you almost don't need a trolling motor. And it pushes my 14ft boat great at high speed also. Couldn't be more happy with it so far!!! :)

I have the same boat painted it off white and baby blue bottom looking to buy the white version of the 15 hp. I had a 20 foot Aluminum with a 150 Hp Mariner Jet I built and it was great but I just don't need that much boat. 31 is a good speed for a motor that will also troll thanks for the video it sold me.

You cannot have it laying down the other way. If you do, you get gearbox oil coming into combustion cylinder. That’s what happened to mine 😅

So after you messed with the trim a bit did you get a bit more top speed? I’ve seen videos of guys with boats like yours that were getting like 22mph (35-36kph) and they had flooring and decking put on there 14ft. I am also curious as to how it’s holding up now 2yrs later. I just ordered that exact model. It was great to find your video on the break in. Just found your channel. Thanks for making a great video.
Hey thanks so much for commenting! Yes, after adjusting the trim it did go slightly faster, but not too much, maybe a couple km/h faster. It has been a dream still tho, after two years I've never had to pull more than 2 times to start her up. She's still running as smooth as I first got it! You are gonna love it!

Thanks for watching!! I just have a small 30L 12 volt trolling motor, works great for the 14 footer. However when it's too windy the trolling motor will be under powered. But the good thing is if it's too windy, you can just troll with the suzuki against the wind!

Hope it works ! any suggestion welcome, my first boat and totally new here. :)

Thank you. Yes it came with a fuel tank and hose with bobber pump that connects to the motor.

@andik859 it doesn't have an internal gas tank. You can attach however big of an external tank you want. The external tank that came with mine is 25 liters I believe.

Did you find the weight heavy to pick it up and mount on your boat for the 1st time? I know it’s over 90 lbs, but wonder if it’s possible to take it on and off every time.
Great question. It's not too heavy at all, if you have two people. It can be a little awkward to lift by yourself. However, if you can bear hug it and lift rather than just with your arms, then it isn't too bad, just like carrying a massive dog.
I've also built a motor stand for my motor. Incase you are wondering about that too. I've now put rollers on my motor stand too, so it's quite easy to lift on and off from the boat.
@@LuRanOutdoors nice, I found a video making such a stand, which I’ll build too. I plan to copy that guy’s and use the stand to move the outboard on and off my car and install on my inflatable boat.

I have not ever left my key/tether in my truck, but that's because I have a spare key/tether hidden inside my motor cowling. Because I have a spare available, I'll probably NEVER need it. lol

What is that noise I hear when you start up when you 1st power the motor and forward it starts vibrating.
I think that is just our paddles or something else in the boat vibrating. Not from the motor. Haha

Those are great questions.. I'll try my best to answer them. My boat is a 14 ft aluminum boat. And these speeds are tested with two average weight adults sitting in it. The slowest speed going forward is about 2to3.5 km/h depending on wind. And the max speed I had was 32km/h.

About 31-32 km is top speed on that 14’? How much are those motors selling for? In CAD?
Yep about 31 to 32 on that day, with 2 people in the 14 foot aluminum boat. But it was still climbing very slowly, maybe 35 is the very max in perfect conditions. After tax it is about 4000 CAD.

How do u know rpm
There's two ways I think. One way is to install an rpm meter to the motor. The other way is that in the instructions manual I think there is a chart that converts how much throttle you apply into rpm. I'm not 100 percent sure, but hope this info helps.

Well look at that!!! That echo boat sure brings back some fond memories. 50 years ago I was 10 and it was the same 14 foot with a mariner 15hp 2 stroke. And the icing on the cake is the sticker that is still in great shape. Echo boat BH Red Fisher approved. He was an American who came up to Ontario Canada every summer to make a TV show. Did for many years.

The best thing I ever did was sell my D20as3! What a piece of terrible engineering! I have gone back to 2 cycle 15hp. Suzuki has no warranty or customer service line that will help you!
Hmmm that's weird.. I've had great luck with mine so far after two years. Haven't had any issues whatsoever. It's been the most reliable motor I've ever used.

What I can't understand with 4S outboards is this complicated and extended running in period. All modern 4S car engines do not have this - since manufacturing tolerances and metallurlagy is advanced from 1970s they are effectively bedded-in by design. Of course they still advise to warm/cool and not use either extended full throttle and revs nor labor the unit for say 1000 miles, otherwise you just get on and drive it. Why is the marine outboard industry different ?
That's a great question!!! I think the reason is because when you are driving a boat, it is always under load, being 100 percent under load is a lot harder for the engine. With cars, we actually don't put nearly as much stress on the engine, driving in the city we can't just pedal to the metal for hours on end for obvious reasons. And on the highway we are typically cruising at maybe 2.5k rmp. Where as for boats we are always running in high rpm for a long periods of time. And if you are traveling long distance, you are going full throttle for hours on end. That's way I think it needs more of a breakin.
Couple minutes for a good warmup, important for new and old and just don't hold it wide open the first hour. Vary the throttle but keep the boat on plane.
Only thing you are braking in is the rings. They need to seat to the cylinder walls and I have never idled a motor for 15 minutes before hand. Get her up on plane and vary speed 1/2 to 3/4 with short full throttle hits. You get good ring seating with good compression and low oil usage out of the gate.
