Grundy County Tornado Warning with Sirens 2/28/2017

  • After watching the progress of a tornadic storm that did damage in Ottawa and Naplate, IL, the sirens went off in Morris, so what do I do? Go out and film the sirens of course! This was the first time I've heard the sirens in Morris, IL, go off for a tornado warning in years. I got the Fulton T-128 closest to my house at Brandt's Body Shop on Liberty St. for the first activation. Then later as I was getting gas, I got the Fulton T-128 on Route 47 across from Taco Bell and attempted to go back to Brandt's T-128, but it shut off before I got there, and the sirens never reactivated.
The tornado passed by Morris to the north and those dark clouds seen in the 2nd video was the tornadic storm. From what I've heard so far, it seemed to be an EF-1 tornado. It has caused at least 1 death so far in Ottawa. Pretty wild stuff for February.

Those sirens. Jesus Christ. I’ve never heard anything like it. I understand camera mics pick up siren sounds differently than the human ear, but even in a video I’ve never heard a tornado siren sound more haunting.

Thank you for the comment! Never expected to see you here. I think there was one siren where the batteries were not running at full capacity (the one heard at 0:19) which made it sound haunting from a distance, as the siren is about a mile away from where I was standing at the beginning. I honestly never expected this video to blow up as much as it did.

It helps people who may not hear their phone or are miles from broadband services. This saves rural and urban lives. Get under ground when you hear this sound, do not stop on highway, make sure if you cant get under ground go in an interior room and cover your self with a matress. As a last resort evacuate.

OUTSTANDING VIDEO, Tommy!!!! OMG, it's so REFRESHING to learn of other people who have the same funky interests I have!!! I've always had an interest in tornado sirens! I'm originally from Massachusetts where tornado sirens were unnecessary, but I whenever I heard the siren test every Wednesday at 1PM while visiting my maternal relatives in Minneapolis, my fascination and curiosity piqued. I remember when I caught my first sight of a tornado siren several years ago. The Minnesota State Fair had been going on at this time when all the food and treats at the Fair were being sold "on a stick." I was walking with a friend through Augsburg Park in Richfield, MN and came across this aqua-colored contraption perched on a tall post. I learned later it was an Allertor tornado siren, but at that time I didn't know what it was. I asked my friend who was walking with me what the aqua contraption was, and before she could answer, a little kid who sitting with his friends on a close-by bench and heard my question promptly answered it: "That's poopoo on a stick!!" I've referred to tornado sirens as "poopoo on a stick" ever since!!

Like this tornado warning and siren video. Reminds me of the low pitched siren sound used in the movie Twister with Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt. Don't know what model of siren was used for that siren audio, but I do know that it was a "WAIL TONE." If the sirens in this video were on wail instead of the "STEADY TONE," they would sound like the one in the TWISTER movie drive in scene. These sirens are TEMPEST 128 sirens by American Signal Corporation, one of my favorites of newly manufactured sirens.

I live in the Midwest and I hear the sirens more than I want to. Back in 2016 our County made history (Howard county, Kokomo Indiana) we had over 4 confirmed tornado touchdowns in our county!! One being a F3. The sirens started to boare so I went outside to look at the weather and the sky had that ominous green color to it, which I knew that we were in trouble. The weather started getting nasty. I took shelter and then all of the sudden it got dead silent!!! That's when the Tornado hit less than 2 miles from where I live. After that I went outside and the clouds were really weird and nothing I have ever seen in all of the years I have lived in Indiana which is about 50 years!!

Eghghh...the sirens creep me out. Among the scariest sounds I've ever heard. We when had a tornado warning (almost crapped my pants) we had only a fire whistle, I probably would have cried if I actually heard a siren like that. Very unsettling.

That is pretty freaky, but fascinating at the same time. How do you like that? A tornado in February. I live in Wheaton, but I've been down to Morris and Marseilles plenty of times recently with my uncle. Last I was out there was maybe a month after this. My Uncle and I were discussing on the ride out there all the storms these towns got on this day. A couple properties near the corner of N 30th Road and E 2575th Road on the outskirts of Marseilles, absolutely destroyed. There was some kind of a tall antenna tower right at that corner that was twisted up and fell on the road that day, from the pictures I saw. The farm across from that had the house torn apart, semi trailers completely overturned, and other bad, bad damage. Worst damage I've ever seen in person, and I'm sure Ottawa got hit ten times worse.

Tornado warnings happen all the time without a twister actually touching down. Thus, people don't take the sirens as serious as they should.

I live in Humble/Spring Texas. We really don’t have tornados here, just bad thunderstorms, really hard rain and every now and then really bad hurricanes. One day, my house got flooded in hurricane Harvey and had to go to a friends house around the corner. An hour later, that house flooded to, so we had to go to lone star college as a hurricane shelter for a night or two.
