Why do we always include New Zealand in diplomatic talks? Their military is probably the weakest in the world. Their defence budget has been neglected for generations and is actually worse than Canada's. In fact, their entire Navy has a total of 8 ships past their due date, some of which are donated from by Aus. They pretty much overly rely on their neighbour. As much as a great country it is, Canada and New Zealand won't bring much to a fight or support in case of a war. Their politicians are pretty left leaning and want nothing to do with a conflict. Theirs a reason why they weren't included in the AUKUS agreement, because they bring nothing to the table

If the Taiwan conflict happens, it will require the US effort at a near world war level due to the distance it has to transport materials and troops, and the level of intensity that will be taken place. Looking at the world and back at China long and historical territorial policies, Taiwan is prime for China to full fill its ambition as the latter has been practicing, aka conducting exercises, to invade.

@@danwelterweight4137you’re saying this as if the Chinese Navy will absolutely dominate the water around them, conveniently forgetting that Japan also possesses a powerful navy, and can be expanded if required to do so.
You mention China possessing hypersonic missiles, as if America doesn’t have hypersonic missiles either. If going to war, China will pay the same price as America, their important cities like Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Chongqing, Nanjing and various coastal cities will see missiles raining over their heads too. The key difference is, America is never alone in its war, meaning China has to target numerous of their allies in the region as well (South Korea, Japan, Thailand, The Philippines, Australia). So while China has to focus on all of those target, they only have *one* target to focus on, and that’s China.
Logistics wins war. We have never seen Chinese logistics capabilities in war. Just because they’re the largest industrial power (2nd largest now, since America is undergoing reindustrialization) does not automatically mean they have the best logistics system to handle a war of this caliber.

It is detached from the rest of the world by several thousand miles, except a few tiny islands surrounding it, and that makes Aussie land strategically very signifiant location for trade, tourism, and defense. As an Australian, I am mindful of America's only consistent policy - self-interest.
In WW2, Macarthur used our troops as cannon fodder in minor campaigns. It only utilised the British Pacific Fleet when the armoured flghtdecks of their carriers were resistant to most kamikaze attacks. America's policy was clearly stated, to make the Pacific an American lake.
Then came the betrayal at Suez in 1956. More recently, America's car companies closed their factories in Australia.
We are supposed to follow the American "free market" model when our size makes us vulnerable to predatory overseas companies, mostly American.
North Korea has given self-sufficiency a bad reputation, yet we need to protect ourselves from both Chinese expansionism and American corporate suzerenity. How many Chinese car factories would transfer my allegiance? I don’t know, but love for America...

Ask the Tibetans about chinese self interest. Or south east asian countries about chinese policy of maritime borders, or India/Bhutan about land borders. Ask developing nations about the terms of the loans so graciously given to them. Ask the people of Taiwan or Hong Kong why they resist Bejing's rule. Or ask a mainlander what happened on June 4th 1989. All chinese self interest.
Australia imports cars from 1)Japan, 2)South Korea, 3)China, 4)Thailand, and 5)Germany. The latest data I saw was 1.1 million imports and 500 thousand domestic production per year. Most governments add auto tariffs to protect domestic industries from imports, this tariff was removed in australia and domestic producers were pushed out.
The US led order has issues, but it has a forum to create multi-lateral deals to fix these issues. It's policy will be based in self interest just as the policy of australia will be, but it also uses it's power to protect the free world. China uses it power to take or threaten to take more land.

It’s interesting how people react when Australia is called an "unsinkable US aircraft carrier." While we've been distracted by domestic issues, let's say footy, our dependency on the US and UK has only deepened, and with it, our inability to say no to wars that have little to do with us.
For decades, we’ve followed our allies into conflicts that don’t serve Australia’s interests, lacking the leadership to stand firm. Our strategic value has grown, but at the cost of our independence.
