I had heard a lot about the Rage when it first came out and was impressed with the cutting width. Until I actually shot a nice big doe with it. Just as you described it a small hole and no expansion. The recovered arrow showed no evidence of any expansion and I know where I hit her as it was just getting dark and I clearly watched the Luminock pass through at the "elbow" and exit out the off side. We looked until our flashlights died and went back the following day. I never found her (someone else did a week later) I did have occasion to shoot a second doe the next afternoon. This time it opened up and she totally bleed out within 30 yards. Same shot placement different results. Both at about 15 yards. I'd say I am soured on the mechanical broadheads. My son and his boys all swear by them and they shoot many more deer than I do ...guess I'm just set in my ways!

Just purchase the Rage Hypodermic NC I find really good reviews on them and then others saying they never open on impact. I can take them back swap them out for the Rage Hypodermic with collars . I did read an article stating that these broad heads need a good power launch from the cross bow for them to open. I have plenty of punch shooting 390 fps that they may be just fine. Being now 2020 with rage having plenty of time test these heads you would think they would be perfected.
Hey bud just wondering if u have a video title or could list the short comings of a fixed blade broadhead. Not looking to argue I'm more interested in the problems that you have encountered thanks again can't wait kansas is soon to open for xbow season 👌
@@Deathbybunjie One thing I wonder about is the average length of tracking fixed vs. mechanical heads. I know what you hit makes a ton of difference how far the animal goes. My own experience ranges from 10ft to 400+yds (started tracking too early and jumped the deer).
Do you use the o-ring with the shock collar? Or just the shock collar? My instructions from rage said that you have to use the shock collar in conjunction with the o-ring but there was no o-ring in the pack.
Enjoy the videos Rich.... I've got 20+ Rage hypodermic for my compound bow with black collar. Does anyone now if I can just install red collar on them and let my son shoot them in his crossbow ?
Yes the only difference between crossbow and standard broadhead is The crossbow version is 24/64 diameter to fit the bolt flush as where standard is 5/16 it will work the broadhead will just be a little smaller than bolt diameter
Will this broadhead Rage Hypodermic work with my old model Excalibur Phoenix crossbow (speed 305 fpm and draw weight 175 lbs)? I use 20" FireBolt carbon arrows (265 grains).
I use it on Bunjie...305fps, 175 draw weight, 285 grain arrows, 385 total weight with these 100 grain heads. No problems 3 straight years. Be sure to get crossbow model and install properly of course.
I am a fan of the 2-blade mechanical broadhead. Seems to put better blood on the ground. It’s true that not every broadhead will perform the same from every crossbow. That being said, I think that rage is one of the best designs of all time. In keeping with this, I use NAP KILLZONE & Rage Hypodermic as my go to.
I shoot an Excalibur Phoenix and like your crossbow it shoots under 300 fps. I’m guessing it’s shooting around 290 or so. Have you had any problems with the blades deploying with the Hypodermics. I have heard that the red shock collars on the Rage broadheads don’t work well at lower velocities. I enjoy your videos because like you, many of us don’t shoot the latest and greatest high velocity crossbows that modern technology is able to produce.
I think they open fine with 65 ft lbs of Kinetic Energy or more... that's most crossbows. I've never had one fail to open. But I had a different brand fail, but I don't think that was due to KE. Just a fluke, but I did find that deer ok.
Question brother, I haven’t used rage broadheads yet and i’m sure this might differ with every guys crossbow and bolts being used, but to the 100 grain hypodermics tend to shoot the same in practice as a 100 grain practice tip? Just ordered this broadhead online last night and just wondered about this. Thanks!
If you guys want pass thru shots with Mechanical Broadheads then put a few dabs of Dead Down Wind Arrow X-Tract. Put a few dabs on the bolt . Rub it on the bolt. Problem Solved. I'm a Fixed Blade Guy Myself, but hey whatever works for you then go for it.
I don't think it was a dud it was probably damaged from all the different animals that it helped you harvest Pryor to the last one you harvest with it it did it's task many times and was more like stressed out of shape!
I re-watched this...I wasn't very clear. I don't re- use broadheads. I shot a lot of deer with that model of broadhead but a different one each time. So it was a brand new one that failed to open. Sorry about that.
I always retire my bolts and broad heads if I killed something and place it on the racks or if not getting mounted on my shelf with a piece of tape telling me what when and where I killed it. I usually only get 2 deer a year so it doesn't cost me a fortune..
The Toxic I used in my Crossbow were terrible after 15 yards. The problem with the Toxic is the lack of penetration. The cutting diameter is 7/8 of an inch. So don’t expect a huge blood trail. It works great on water gallons.
@@Deathbybunjie took all night for the deer to die we tracked him for hours before calling it off a d going back out to find him in the morning still bleeding out but to weak to stand had to finish him off
People!!! Listen carefully as this fellow knows of that which he posts!! Remember!! Your choice of broad heads is not nearly as important as your SHOT PLACEMENT!!! Enjoy!!!!
I have shot several deer, a turkey, and gray fox with these broadheads. Installed correctly and none opened in any of the animals. I was shooting a 390 fps Xbow. I get a pass through using my block target every shot and either no blades opened or one would. After several phone called to Rage and sent photos of my animals and target with the broadhead not opening they replaced them after a few seasons of non stop failures with the no collar versions. I will try them in my block and if they open 10 out of 10 times I’ll try them if not their going in the garbage. I did buy a pack of the flimsy black collars meant for low poundage bows and tried them, they don’t open in flight and completely open as soon as they hit the block. Rage told me they will own in flight with my xbow velocity. Probably just not going to open my replacement NC versions and sell them off. To many bad experiences with them. All game was recovered. I have photos of the animals with field point looking in and out holes to prove it. Even have a photo of the heart of one showing it never opened. My guess is my 390 fps xbow with a155 pound draw weight is to weak to deploy the red collar versions, I see I’m not the only one with the same issues. Their are a lot of posts on forums showing the blades don’t open in block type targets. Rage told me that’s normal not to open in block targets and they will own in deer. That is not normal. I've been bowhunting since the 70s. The first expandable broadheads came lut in the 80s and ive owned almost every one along the way. Every expandable broadhead I've tried opened by the time is passed through a block type target accept for this red collar rage. I have photos up on predator masters forum over the years with a few broadheads that didn't open or fail. Feel free to look. Wasn't opererator or shooter error but just plain broadhead design failure. That red collar is just made out of way to hard of plastic for my 390 fps and 315 fps xbows. I'm sure in a high 400 fps xbow with alot more energy it would probably open fine.
They shouldn't open in your block, typically. No idea what's going on here, I had 100% success with them, and pretty sure I wouldn't use them over and over if they failed every time. Sorry to hear about your troubles!
@@Deathbybunjie yep, I should have quit after the first two deer I shot with them but Rage told me to try them without hand tightening them down so hard. Didn’t think I did to begin with. So I shot a turkey , grey fox, and another deer last season with them and none opened. Lesson learned. Just not a reliable broadhead for me and a lot of others. There are tons of posts about the red collars not opening. Imo they probably open reliably with Xbows that have a lot more kinetic energy than my Stryker sl390 and Horton Hunter has. Tried them in two Xbows with the exact same results.I’m sure a quick google of rage xbow hypodermic failure will produce many show and tells like min along with the photos I posted. Anyways, some have good luck with them but to my the are 100% unreliable. I’ll stick with what works which is the Gator style that has free floating blades. They open 200% percent of the times no matter what they are shot out of. Been shooting mechanicals since they first were introduced to market. Have a few of the originals left. They all will fail at one point if you shoot enough game to test them on. I’d tell you to get some under 400 fps Xbows and test them on deer and tell me how they didn’t work for you. I still have the broadheads. Rage told me to keep them. Anyone is invited over for a show and test along with testing. It’s the only mechanical I have never had expand going into and also through a foot plus thick block target. To me that spells failure right off the bat. Rage is well aware of it after my last conversation with them. Anyways, love your videos but the red xbow collars are a failure for many besides me.
@@Deathbybunjie my only guess is you get way more energy to help open the blades with recurve limbs? The other thing I've noticed over thr decade with 2" and larger mechanical broadheads is the gator non locking blade style heads give me a pass through 99.9% of the time. The rage, grim reaper, and other styles normally don't exit and stop with going through the opposite side stopping on the ribs. My biggest concern. I like a pass through for good a decent blood.
@@tripplebeards3427 i doubt it, once the arrow leaves the crossbow, energy is energy. I suppose recurve vs compound might affect PREMATURE opening but not opening at target. consistently not opening time and time again tells me it's something else--maybe you had knock offs or (not pointing fingers, but...) user error. These are the most popular broadheads ever sold, after all. the archery world has used these with great success from 250 to 450 fps, year after year. BUT if they're not working for you, by all means look elsewhere! 100%
lol Dude you totally did this incorrectly. THe shock collar has notches in then which is supposed to align with the mechanical hooks on the broadhead. To accomplish this, there is an indicator on the collar the is supposed to point straight up to help align the notch. I am very surprised that you are saying that your broadheads are actually opening because you are doing it wrong.

Different models maybe but these do not have o rings
@@Deathbybunjie ok thanks. I have those same models. I just wanted to be 100% sure
I used a compound bow rage on my crossbow... same results and dead deer.
Enjoy the videos Rich.... I've got 20+ Rage hypodermic for my compound bow with black collar. Does anyone now if I can just install red collar on them and let my son shoot them in his crossbow ?
I think different ferrule size even if fit, made for skinnier arrow
Yes the only difference between crossbow and standard broadhead is The crossbow version is 24/64 diameter to fit the bolt flush as where standard is 5/16 it will work the broadhead will just be a little smaller than bolt diameter
PS I love the new studio it's looking great!
@@Deathbybunjie I have only 265 grain arrows and a lot of them. Do I need 125 grain broadhead for better penetration/impact?
I am a fan of the 2-blade mechanical broadhead. Seems to put better blood on the ground.
It’s true that not every broadhead will perform the same from every crossbow.
That being said, I think that rage is one of the best designs of all time. In keeping with this, I use NAP KILLZONE & Rage Hypodermic as my go to.
I imagine you could re-use the broadheads for maybe turkey hunting? Doesn't take a whole heck of allot to down a turkey
A good point and I bet you're right IF they're straightened out to fly true and open correctly
What did he tell you?
Question brother, I haven’t used rage broadheads yet and i’m sure this might differ with every guys crossbow and bolts being used, but to the 100 grain hypodermics tend to shoot the same in practice as a 100 grain practice tip? Just ordered this broadhead online last night and just wondered about this. Thanks!
Yes, for me at least, and there's a practice tip too
I like the "pronunciations"!! Will "Ferrell" haha
So I have these and they have failed to open in my targets. My bows shoot 380fps. I've read they perform better on game has this happened to you?
They typically don't open in foam...put a sheet of Luan plywood a few inches from it or really stiff cardboard and see what happens!
Thanks. Very helpful.
You know you can get new blades for them
Yep, might do down the road
I think I need to get the book to answer my questions lol
I don't think it was a dud it was probably damaged from all the different animals that it helped you harvest Pryor to the last one you harvest with it it did it's task many times and was more like stressed out of shape!
I re-watched this...I wasn't very clear. I don't re- use broadheads. I shot a lot of deer with that model of broadhead but a different one each time. So it was a brand new one that failed to open. Sorry about that.
I’m calling B.S. I believe you are controlled by “Big Archery” jk 😂
LOL
Used these with my PSE Thrive 365 and got my nuisance doe , "didn't go 20 "
I always retire my bolts and broad heads if I killed something and place it on the racks or if not getting mounted on my shelf with a piece of tape telling me what when and where I killed it. I usually only get 2 deer a year so it doesn't cost me a fortune..
you should check out a broadhead called TOXIC it leaves a nice big hole ALL HAIL BUNJIE AND BUNJIE JR
The Toxic I used in my Crossbow were terrible after 15 yards. The problem with the Toxic is the lack of penetration. The cutting diameter is 7/8 of an inch. So don’t expect a huge blood trail. It works great on water gallons.
My dad shot a 130lbs deer last night with these and the blades broke off on impact stright junk
Sorry to hear that!
Enjoy!!!!
Those Rage r evil sharp don't juggle.
@@tripplebeards3427 weird they always opened for me on a 300 ft per second crossbow
Sorry, "dude," you are wrong.
don't like collars- nap spitfires
i have nothing against those!
Omg!! 3% info and 97% useless blabbling !!
You can't rush your way to crossbow success, sorry
@@Deathbybunjie no, but you could talk about the subject and not everything in between!! Lol. But I understand. You're right
