Thanks for this! I used the auto-diagnostics to reboot my ice maker after a filter issue resulted in the ice mold becoming locked in the up position. In case my situation might help somebody else out, I left my water filter in a couple of weeks past 6 months, and it eventually restricted the water flow to the ice maker enough to cause the ice mold not to sense that it had ice cubes in it...when this happens, the ice mold won't turn and dump its contents. And I had not even realized how small the ice cubes were getting as the filter got older. So, knowing the filter had gone past 6 months, I replaced it, but the ice mold was still basically locked. Luckily, I found this video, and running the auto-diagnostics reset the system. I had new ice within a few hours. Additionally, the ice cubes are back to their normal size. So, definitely keep an eye on your filter age and the size of the ice cubes...an older filter can indeed cause the system to shut down.

This is happening to me with the ice maker at the bottom. I changed the filter and then saw ice in the tray but it wouldn’t dump them. I put warm water over the trays and the ice maker dumped quickly after, but that’s it. It didn’t dump again so I’m hoping this helps. I did run a defrost as well hoping something with get the bottom one working.

Thank you! I’m going to try this. I had a tech out 5 different times for the ice maker and he said mostly it’s just a poor design and something inside the ice maker freezes up and suggested turning it off for a day or so and then back on, which usually works. Since then my warranty expired so I haven’t had them back. My fridge also has the optional ice maker in the bottom freezer drawer, which we loved until it quit working about a year ago.

@@Diy_Mikehey man, so I ran the diagnostic, and all the functions seem to work, but no water goes into the tray. Also, my process seem to take like 10 to 12 minutes for the whole cycle to repeat itself. Not just like one to two we’re talking quite a bit of time in between starting it and then next time it does it. The lights do flash the whole time, and the temp changed a little bit in the freezer to 2° throughout the whole process. It went up to two then back down to one. Any ideas? Also, when you run the “defrost” cycle, does it ruin your food?

  • @TheCLCED

My Gallery is FGHB2868TD8 (MAY 2021)
The instructions were identical. I ran the auto diagnostic and let the unit cycle through till it simulated an ice making process. The twisting of the tray to eject the cubes was pretty cool. I too forgot to place the cup and took a bath. Anyway during the ice making simulation the unit made a sound like gears having difficulty turning. That was because the motor was coated in ice. After a DF sequence the unit produced a full bin of ice about 15 hours later. Thanks for the (water + crush) to increase ice production. Mine was on low and took forever to make ice.
The following day it stopped again so I first ran another DF. This cycle did not take as long (5 minutes) as the first time i ran it the night before (about 20 minutes) which lead me to think that the unit knows when it is defrosted. I also read that not changing the filter can cause problems so I changed it for the first time. Well I can't say for certain if that solved the problem but it did start producing again and I sure could see an increase in water flow.
I would conclude that this unit will not produce ice or stop producing ice if the on board computer detects a failure. In a sense the unit is trying to preserve itself. Unlike the way we are used to knowing that a device is malfunctioning by hearing a strange noise but by then it is to late because the mechanics of the ice maker will have destroyed itself trying to cycle but this units software will not allow the device to complete a cycle unless a hardware test carried out by the computer software gets a "thumbs up" to proceed with the next step. I mean in a way its nice that most of us were able to correct our issues by pressing some buttons and not buying expensive parts but technically speaking if Elon Musk can land a rocket on a moving platform in the middle of the ocean then we should be way past trying to perfect the bloody ice maker.

Tried defrost mode (shows as "d F" on the display) and it worked. Took about 15 minutes to go through the cycle and then it goes back to normal mode automatically. I was worried about food in the lower freezer but that was not a problem. Could not tell anything happened other than the water dispenser and ice maker started working!!. On my Gallery I press the plus (+) and minus (-) at the same time for many seconds until "d F" shows. Then leave until it cycles back to the normal display. This beats buying a new fridge or paying for repair.

After having the local service techs here to "fix" the "not making ice" with three replacement parts under warranty and the problem continued, I reviewed the parts diagram and wiring diagram. Supposedly there should be a defrost cycle for the water fill line. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't . My "fix" for three years, when the ice tray is almost full, I shut off the " make ice" function. It appears when the ice container is full, the ice is close enough to the water line that it freezes the water line thus no water to make ice. When the container is close to empty, turn the "make ice" function on, a couple of days later, container is full, shut off the "make ice" . Has worked nicely for some four years now.

Thank you for the video showing how to get into the diagnostic mode. My ice maker has been down since I bought the machine years ago and I just took it apart to figure it out. The whole ice unit was frozen solid in a block of ice which is odd since the ice maker was turned off AND unplugged. Got rid of the ice block and cleared the drain tube and hooked everything back up just to let it sit over night and not make ice so I came to this video. Running the diagnostic shows that it can and does dump water into the tray and the tray rotates the water out. So if this is happening fine I still don't understand why the fridge isn't sensing that ice needs to be made and filling the tray like its supposed to. I cannot go into the manual diagnostic mode like you did due to my led panel where the degrees are at are not fully lit up.

Thanks for this video. I had the same problem, but based on what you showed I tried this first. I replaced the water filter, which I should have done a year ago. The filter was restricting the water flow to the degree that it was allowed to freeze in the tube at the top (my deduction). So, I took a hair dryer and pointed it at the space between the top of the fridge and the ice maker for about a minute. I wanted about 8 hours and ice started coming. Works great now! Thanks for the explanation.

    Hi Mike,
So, we have the same issue every 2 weeks… I end up having to dismantle the whole ice maker box and motor assembly to blow dry the ice maker coils because they’re covered in ice. Have you ever taken yours apart? There’s a ton of ice that builds up causing it to stop making ice. When I use the blow dryer to melt the ice, I put a towel down under it and after I’m done the towel is drenched. I put it all back together and it works for 2 weeks or so and then it does it again. There’s a drain hole in the back. I just don’t understand where the water is going once it goes down the hole??? I guess what I’m asking is your “fix” that uses the DF defrost. Where is all that water being collected every 2 weeks if the defrost is melting all of that ice?

I got a kick out of when Mike finished and said it would work for about two weeks. One thing I did before running the auto diagnostics is I changed the filter. It was a six month filter and I had installed a new 4 months eariler, so I kind of ruled that out. After a day or so and I still had no ice. After running the auto diagnostics I had ice the next day. It's been a month and the ice maker is working fine. I don't really understand it but maybe it forced something to work that malfunctioned.

Great video😊I’ve tried to repair Frigidaire Gallery ice maker at least six times, de ice , new ice trays, new fan blower carrier, new thermostat and nothing worked long term. It always stopped working. My assumption was that it was a mechanical problem.
After viewing your video and doing the hard reset, guess what ? It started working. My suspicion is that a software issue is driving the malfunctioning that’s continuing. How else would a hard reset start it working without mechanical intervention ? As far as Frigidaire appliances , terrible designs and reliability . The dishwasher has failed many times , from grommets in the water , to door seals to two photo eyes stopping it from working, steam from unit shorting a 75 cent part .
The micro wave lowing the IC board two years in. Kitchen has been a disaster with these appliances it’s never a day without issues. I will never buy this brand again. Again thanks for the great video , I’ll use it until we decide to junk all of Frigidaire appliances and start over. 2:43 2:43 2:43

I just switch them back to whatever they were. In any case they should reset to their default position when you exit the diagnostic and the fridge resets. If you're really worried about it you can unplug the fridge for 30 seconds and plug it back in.

I have the 2022 model # grss2352af and unfortunately they have changed the diagnostic selections and even the buttons. For instance, both sides are +/- now, with no up/down on the left. And holding +/- together on the right side for 5 seconds simply switches from farenheit to celsius rather than triggering a diagnostic. Can't find the Service Data Sheet for this model anywhere online. if anyone does, please reply here.

I’ve found there to be an inherent problem with the ice maker water tube and coils freezing up. This fix should take about 60 minutes at most. First put the refrigerator in defrost mode by pushing the + and - button simultaneously. After it finishes the defrost mode which should take about 30-40 minutes turn the refrigerator off on the door panel and remove the ice collector. Next put a pot of boiling water on a heat pad in the back of the refrigerator directly under the ice maker. Finally take a blow dryer and with the setting on high point it directly towards the back of the ice maker while you hold the blow dryer in the front of the ice maker. Do this for about 10-15 minutes. Then put the ice collector back on the ice maker and turn the refrigerator back on at the door panel. You should be able to start making ice again.

If that doesn't look like try to find a service manual for that that tells you what the different codes for the diagnostic mean and one of them will be checking the ice crusher. If you're model number is different but the fridge still looks similar the process may be different or not work the same way. I would search your model number service manual and see if the defrost operates the same. If it is the same and doesn't work I would reset the fridge and try the defrost. If that didn't work unplug and plug back in and try. If that doesn't work you may need to replace the board or touchscreen on the fridge. I could be wrong though, I'm not a service technician. Sometimes you can return parts you ordered and didn't need but you can't return appliance repair guy time. Good luck!
