Poke Pizza: Is Hawaiian Hoboken Fusion a Match Made in Heaven? || Really Dough?

- There are dozens and dozens of pizza shops in the city of Hoboken. But only one that has dared to do what few have done before: top a pizza with raw fish. Traditional Hawaiian poke no less. So on this episode of “Really Dough?” Scott and Mark are dipping their toes into the world of poke pizza with a pie from Makai Poke Co. in Hoboken, NJ. Will Mark call it a pizza? Will Mark kick Scott out?
Pizza is one of the most customizable foods in history. Tomato sauce, white sauce, artichoke cream sauce, broccoli, M&M’s, pineapple, edible 24K gold -- a pizza can be anything your heart desires. But should it? Renowned pizza nerd Scott Wiener is challenging the idea that pizza can be anything. He’s traveling all over America, spotlighting these Frankenstein pizzas and trying to make a case for whether these new customizations can, in fact, still be considered a pizza. In the end, Wiener takes these pizzas to Lucali to pass final judgment from the purist of all pizza purists, Mark Iacono, where he will either declare each slice “PIZZA!” or ask with complete disgust, “Really, dough???”

"You're using a pizza cutter, does that mean it's a pizza?"
If I hit you with a hammer, does that mean you're a nail?
You're mean
Tommy BRO but that isn’t pizza, every Italian can agree..
What if you cut your pizza with scissors?
Fair point, well made!
Lolol
I love Mark as a foil for this show. He's old school and a traditionalist at heart, but is current enough to admit that something as seemingly ridiculous as poke pizza looks delicious. A+
Yup, he sticks to the fundamentals but he's not an asshole about it. He still respects and enjoys other foods.
yeah he’s cool
yeah, you can't help but like the guy
Just because he doesn’t go along with every gimmick that comes along and agree with popular opinion doesn’t mean he’s some out of touch old man that doesn’t understand anything except what he knows and likes. George Carlin once said: “never underestimate the stupidity of people in large numbers”. The world would be a much better place if more people weren’t afraid to be sheep and take the road less traveled some times. Integrity is sticking to what you know in your heart to be true, no matter what everybody else says. Way too many people these days form their opinions based on what their peers think or what they read in the news, see on social media, or whatever form of fashion and popular culture they choose to take in. The individuals with integrity base their opinions on experience and/or what they have put in the effort to learn about properly in order to form their own opinions. Don’t get me wrong, most people are influenced at least to some degree by what others think, but the ones with integrity aren’t afraid to separate themselves from that because of what they know in their heart is true. All of that being said, I do not personally know Mark or the “Pizza Nerd” and I would imagine that a whole lot of this is done simply for the sake of entertainment.

Italian chefs screaming "Not A Pizza"
Hawaiian chefs screaming "Not A Poke"
Japanese chefs screaming "Not A Sushi"
i mean it is sushi... after all have you seen chirashi ?
ITS FUCKING RAW
Dojfes fiskebod that’s sushi
Aaron Montgomery no it’s not a sushi,
Dojfes fiskebod it’s supposed to
I guess if I cut a cookie into triangles I can call it a pizza
Have you not experienced Hershey's cookie pizza?
I Don't know about that. Do Oreos qualify too?
Aviato *cookie pizza
Too be honest...kinda liked the hershey's pizza
It’s already a thing at BJ’s they call it a pizookie and serve it with ice cream
How can I already imagine a blockbuster movie with Mark set as the protagonist’s disapproving father. Like his kid grows up working in his pizza shop, goes off to college, and comes back with a new spin on pizza. Mark disapproves so wholeheartedly that they get into a fight. His son, Donnie (that’s his name now), runs away and cuts off communication. Donnie goes through many trials and tribulations in his quest for success, becomes a hot shot, makes it onto the news-WHIIIIICH Mark just happens to be watching as he’s rolling his pizza dough with a wine bottle. (It’s an over the shoulder shot, and we can see he’s watching an old cathode ray tube hanging up in the corner of the store.)
“I’ll be damned. He really made it, huh?”
Mark goes to visit his son’s shop. Donnie is surprised, and begins to apologize. “Dad? Oh my god, Dad!” Embrace follows. “Dad, I know I made some mistakes. I know I wasn’t cut from the cloth you were. I was just so scared an angry. All I could think to do was just go-somewhere, anywhere but home.” Silence as they look at each other. “I’m so sorry for skipping town and running off. I just always really wanted to be like you. You’re my hero. And I know-”
Mark shakes his head.
“No, Donnie, I’m sorry. I’ve been doing some thinking-“ Mark sighs, then swallows. Mark is looking down at the ground. “Look. I know I wasn’t the father you wanted me to be. But I loved you,” he says, looking up, “and I still do. For the last eight years, every pizza I’ve made reminds me of you, wearing your oversized apron as a kid, running around the kitchen, looking at every pizza your mom and I made like it was the first one you’d ever seen. And god damn it if I didn’t miss you every time I pictured it. No, Donnie, I’m the failure. Could you ever forgive me? And come back home?”
Big hugs, lots of tears. “Course, Dad. Nothing would make me happier.”
Fade out, fade in. Donnie is sketching up a plan for a new kind of pizza for his newest restaurant. Mark comes over to inspect it. “What do you think, Dad?”
“Looks good. Maybe you could add some pineapple to it.” Mark turns around, noting, “Or maybe make it a hexagon!” as he walks out of Donnie’s door.
Donnie smiles, then writes something down. “Yeah. That’s perfect.”
We zoom out from Donnie’s office. Next door is Mark, working in his own office, with a portrait of him and Donnie smiling in aprons hanging behind him on the wall. We zoom out enough to get out of the restaurant and see its sign: “Not A Pizza. Est. 2019. A Family Business.”
End.
So much effort, man.
Overdoing it
George T thank u for this compliment
lolguy trolguy Yea boi I made one about Grendel hitting Beowulf from the back while the whole village jerks it (even the people Grendel killed). It’s super juicy-and I mean literally. Like, how would that NOT get you off? Anyway, you seem interested, so I can send it to your DMs!
thank you for this i have tears in my eyes
Just because it’s shaped like pizza doesn’t make it pizza
Same with california maki looks like sushi but ain't really sushi. Hahahhaha
True
It's not even shaped like pizza!
Implying pizza has a defined shape
Let’s go get a slice someday
This video just gave me some crazy strong cravings for 2 different things
Rice and seaweed ?
That's what it's here for.
food and the other "snacks" in this video? hahaha
Two greats .... sushi and pizza
That's what i thought when I saw the sausage
He look like lil dicky if he actually finished college
But he still funny
He looks like a non-biracial version of Logic
Lil Dicky finished college and landed a $200,000 plus per year job in marketing in San Fran before he started rapping.
Scott wiener is unbearable in my opinion, every show I watch him host I dislike him more, kinda like a shitty RUclips Chris hardwick he’s hosting all the stuff I like but he’s just not that likeable
Italian people have left the chat
And Hawaiians
Lol.
pizza isn’t italian
@@zach-1307 u aren't human
@@HOTPOCKET789 and you're not kidding, brah. What a bunch of kukai.
This just gives me PTSD from that one Kitchen Nightmares episode with the sushi pizza.
Mark was impressed AND eager to try it.
THATS SO MUCH more of a win that getting the pizza approval lol
Love the new intro. 👍 Poke is delicious but I'm sure everyone watching agrees with Mark that this is *_Not A Pizza._* Another great episode.
Thank you!
Not a pizza
4:05 yo furikaké isn’t traditionally Hawaiian. It’s Japanese. Furikaké is literally a Japanese word
THANK YOU
Ikr and how he says poke gets in my nerves
Yeh, lots of the aspects where East Asian and Hawaiian.
Lol but why does it matter tho
well since Hawaii's population is 43% japanese he probably meant it was traditional for the Japanese in Hawaii.
People in Hawaii are yelling at the screen right now.
Brah for real, can everyone please stop saying Pokey. Not too mention the fake accent over the "e" people add. Poke is just straight cold seasoned fish on some nice rice.
Shane Riveral you damn right! “Come give me some!!!” Cheeeeeee🤙🏼
The only thing I consider poke is the spicy ahi. The rest is is something that mainlanders invented. It looks good I’ll give it that
This is a damn abomination.
You are very much correct.
Less than half of this "poke" pizza can even be considered "poke"
Right! Like what is Korean chicken poke?
Poke is the fish on the pizza which takes up more than half the pizza so it should be considered poke
He said he liked the spicy pieces, then he went on to describe every slice with the word spicy 😂
Can we get 5000 subs with no videos funny how all of them are named spicy ____
i bet none of them are even spicy
For someone who seems like a really traditionalist guy, Mark is surprisingly open about eating foreign food
"You're very sensitive in general" he said it. Lol.
One day Scott is going to pick something so offensive that Mark just snaps and throws him through a window.
I love the editing but what really makes the show is these two lads here! Love this keep it up!
Trains with a Hawaiian guy and he still calls it POKE-EEEEEEE
yup, wats up wit dat?
"There are hexagonal pizza boxes... In Brazil"
When he said that i was legit surprised pikachu because there's a hexagonal pizza box in front of me rn, from the pizza i just ate.
screaming! I love this 2 (Mark and Scott - pure magic)
I didn't even realize that here in Brazil we only have hexagon pizzas boxes
Alguns lugares tem caixa quadrada na real, mas geralmente é redonda ou hexagonal
I didn’t even have too watch to know he was gonna say it’s not a pizza. But agree that it’s insane, and looks great! I bet taste great!
I just found this channel and now I can't stop watching it!!!
lmao the editing was on point in this vid
Glad you liked it!
🤔🤔
Rice printing machine!?
Those customers r fake right? One just stares at the window
That's like here in San Francisco where they try to make everything a burrito. Yeah, you can get a sushi burrito called a sushirito. Unfortunately they're kinda gross, give me some good old fashioned regular sushi over that any day.
I love this series so much
I'm actually, obsessed with their friendship 😂🤗💖
First video I see from you guys and I have to say you guys have a strong charisma! Love the humor and personality!
First thing I’m doing when I travel to NYC, is to grab a pizza from Lucali! They look classically. Traditional! I’ve come to enjoy much more simplistic pies recently. Either tomato and olive or just pepperoni.
Man the chemistry between the two makes these vids really fun to watch
Scott and Mark have such great chemistry, I wish there were more episodes because these are so interesting to watch
Theres something that really draws me in about their banter and dynamic and this season you have more of that so thats nice
ill never get sick of the intro.
It's not a pizza , but it looks like something I'll definitely eat!!
Love this show. hope to see more.
There's no argument. It's not pizza. It looks good and I'd totally eat it. But it's not pizza.
"furikake which is a very traditional hawaiian-" *Japanese.* It's Japanese. You're welcome.
Was looking for this
@@Ryan-zd3cc Hawaiians are related to Japanese... through their polynesian bloodline
70% of hawaiian food is legit just modified asian food tho
@@dimihamuzu Really? I thought it was 70% Spam
That doesn’t contradict that it is a traditional Hawaiian seasoning anyways
Not only is this a great series it’s well filmed and edited.
I just think of how Mark would be disturbed if he came to Brazil to try the pizzas here, pizza creativity is beyond boundaries of ANY purist pizza chef.
It's not a pizza. It's deconstructed sushi designed into a circle.
😂
Can’t trust a chef that calls it “po-kee” half the time
Cant trust a white guy that says anything he sells is traditional
PattyMayonnaise can’t trust a white guy that says anything
👍🏽
@@IDiggPattyMayonnaise Do you whites can be Irish, Italian, Spanish, and even Mexican? So if an Italian is selling Italian food it's not Italian food or traditional? STFU
Period!!
Please never stop bringing these out lmao
My new favourite youtube channel
8:35 I think Scott just became Yoda...
What was that?!
"Eat it like a slice of pizza!" Then WHY DID YOU GIVE HIM CHOPSTICKS?!
I love this series.
"Hey are you Brandon?"
"Oh hey Scott"
I'm confused
I hope the crew devoured the poke after filming in both locations. It looked delicious!
Pizza guaranteed to not burn your mouth
*all 6 slices of the pizza are spicy*
Quinton15117 genius (that's a riddle). Also, LLJ!
These two together are awesome. Good chemistry
I loooooooove Mark's voice and his whole aura
BTW I'm new to this channel and the whole banter between Mark and Scott made me subscribe!
Good chemistry between these guys
They're great together!
this episode is so dumb, and that is why it is so great.
This series is hilarious!
7:06 Just love it how he's so keen on getting his "pizza" tried and eaten by Mark. Shows a total fan-boy moment. :)
So many great series on this channel
YES.
This combines a lot of my loves. So great.
The best combo.
I discovered this two guys yesterday I am a fan ! Love pizza !
This duo works!
A pizza purist and a guy who loves pizza with his own thermometer haha.
Keep it up guys!
I have no double this food is delicious, but I struggle to see why it even made it on this show. If I were to make a pizza with Ground Beef as a topping and cut the pizza into the shape of a heart, could I call it beef heart? Never the less, love the show! Can't wait for the next installment!

Just found this great channel. A good pizza tour
HAHAHAHA you guys are hilarious. mixing in my type of humor with my favorite topics: food.
This is a poke bowl on a pizza sheet
I see the word pizza in there...
not even a "pizza sheet". It's a deconstructed makimono sushi roll.
0:16 Can you guys link me to somewhere that I can download that Mark "Sauce/Cheese/Dough" tablet picture? Its pretty excellent
I love the editor of this series
Met Mark on my birthday, he's such a down to earth guy. Even got a picture with him. The wait was totally worth it for Lucali.
"Pizza should look BETTER, then it tastes."
No, you're expectations need to be matched. Therefore the pizza *must* look as good as it tastes.
He really had the audacity to say, "let me make you a pie". Uhhhh
This actually seems genuinely delicious. I want to try this!
This was absolutely amazing
I was gonna get so mad if he said it was a pizza. lmao
Poke pizza?
When will we get A.....
*Pokémon Pizza?*
Looks amazing !
Literally, everytime I see a pizza from Lucalli I want one. Definitely going next time I go to NYC.
This is good. More of this please.
We need those intro images on some merch ASAP.
This is an awesome show
The content is soo good!
I think hes getting Japan and Hawaii confused
Hawaiian cuisine is highly influenced by Japanese. 1/3 of Hawaii is Japanese.
@@vishalworldoffire that's correct, but does it make my comment incorrect?
@@tannercollins9863Yes because Hawaiian cuisine is basically half Japanese.
@@vishalworldoffire Haha ok bud.
@@tannercollins9863 I don't understand what you are getting at.
I love the relationship of these two.
Okay I watched ALL of them I need more stuff to watch when I'm taking a crap
My favorite thing about New Yorkers is they are blunt, they tell you how it is. It’s so refreshing in a world of passive aggressive crap . I love this show
Can it be considered real pizza if it's not even real poke? Poke needs to be marinated not mixed on the spot lol
Not necessarily.
i don’t think you know much about poke. it doesn’t even get marinated it’s just mixed right there
Lord Escanor I think they're confusing poké with lomi salmon
@@oobloobeeyo2958 Actually, poke from Hawaii is marinated. Poke that isn't marinated isn't "real" poke. Don't tell someone they don't know much about something if you can't even get it right yourself.
@@Josh-bf6ht No, poke is supposed to be marinated. Lomi lomi salmon is not marinated at all, since there is no sauce or marinade involved.
He said Furikake is Hawaian traditional....😑
The really dough series is awesome
love the father son dynamic hahahaha great humor
I don't think it's pizza but I'll still eat the heck out of it anyway. Time to go to grab a slice! 😋
You guys are making me hungry pizza looks delicious 🤤
Same!
its not a pizza
ya'lls relationship is hilarious!
This is my new FAV!
NOT PIZZA. Looks yummy, but it’s NOT PIZZA.
Just because it's shaped like a pizza doesn't make it a pizza, that's just unravelled pizza, not saying it doesn't look good tho
Mark is the Jordan Schlansky of the pizza world 😂
really creative ......... amazing.......
