Gelatin is cooled (dense) bone broth. You seem to never have actually made холодец before. No one adds it. It's boiled out of whatever stock is cooked.
I don't think she meant to imply they added gelatin. The gelatin is naturally there in broth that is boiled with bones. The solidified combination of gelatin and broth is called aspic. It would have been better if she used that term.

Who does kholodets with chicken? It has so little natural collagen they probably substituted it with some gelatin. No wonder she does not want to try this shit again! You need to use pork of beef and proper parts of it. With bones! And cook it the right way. Then jello will be softer and so flavorful and on top of tender meat - that's the true kholodets. And it's super good with spicy mustard or horse-radish.

Pickling is historically practiced in places with long winters. It is a method of preservation. Romanian food is basically the same. I think all Eastern European supermarkets are similar to this. We do put a big emphasis on sausages, cold cuts and we Romanians also pickle a lot as well. and we do put a big emphasis on chocolate : )))
From where you are so convinced that all romanians admit the food you eat even chocolate you are a liar every one who wants to like burgers and pizza or spaghetti, not what you say in general "all of Romania and East", so Be shameful!

Being a Russian person watching this in Canada, this looks like absolute paradise. We have a similar store in Toronto called Yummy Market but nowhere near as massive as this.
That’s hilarious how you commented Russians' love for meat - I’m Russian (a muscovite at that), I’m a vegetarian and I’m being judged for it all the time
Иван Грязин and? Are your surroundings nagging you like mine? "C'mon drink something, you're already an adult after all" "you don't need to be shy, just drink" "he's not drinking because his parents are around. C'mon, they won't mind. You're old enough." They seem not to be able to just accept that I don't drink any alcohol no matter who's around or not 😰
Great job, so enjoyed your market tour. Took me back 10 years to my 12 brand vodka tasting party (a Slate Magazine inspiration). Vodkas were accompanied with Russian zakuski (закуски); plural for "appetizers". Like; salmon caviar on rye, sprotes, (small smoked fish) sliced beef basturma, Salat Olivier (potato salad w/ chicken, peas & carrots), chafing dish pork stroganoff & such. Fell in love discovering Eastern European cuisine. My stomach is FREAKING growing people! Which vodka won our amateur tasting contest? 3rd; Grey Goose, 2nd; Belvedere & 1st place; Chopin Potato Vodka.
In Mexico we also eat beef tongue and rabbit. Though I suppose they are prepared way different. We also add sour cream in a lot of our dishes. Pickled chilli peppers are also eaten on a daily basis. Just thought that was cool. I would love to go to Russia some day.
This was a great video. I would like to try all the pickled foods there, they are my favorite! I have already found a recipe for pickled pears, my wife did not seem particularly interested, but I am. I should make them. Thanks, I really enjoyed this video.
Stevan Nikolic there are Russian supermarkets in Germany. Just pay a visit to Nordrhein-Westfalen. The chains are called "Grand", "Mix Markt" and "Kauver". Is closer than going to the US to grab some Russian food xD
This is such a creative series! I love trying new and different food from all over the world but it's hard to pick which are actually tasty based on packaging..
it's a suckling pig and they are pretty common in grocery stores(esp at x-mas in italian neighborhoods), you just have to ask butcher. My 80 year old mother gets one for porchetta every year
oh ya, I go to this place almost every day, seriously, but how she puts all the food is a lot less then the best part of the actual store. The side with soup is the best part. They have 4 or 5 different soups and you scoop them out and there are also dumplings. Well what a coincidence, a really popluar youtube channel from around the whole America went to the place that I go to every day
Good to see the Russians haven't lost their traditional cuisine like a lot of western European immigrants have in the US. It's a pitty that the British, the Germans, the Dutch and Scandinavians have kinda given up their unique traditions for bland Americana suburban fastfood type stuff. At least the French in the south have kept their traditions and expanded on them by mixing in traditions from other cultures.
Pickling regularly changes the initial taste but really helps to keep all vitamins safe. Much better than conservation or freeze. I eat watermelons pickled regularly. Very tasty.
My mother made preparations for the winter. She marinated tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, pattisons, and yes, watermelons, too. Cooked compotes of all kinds of fruits: apples, plums, cherry plums, apricots, gooseberries, pears, cherries, merries. Much of this grew in our garden. She cooked jams of apples, pears, strawberries, cherries, merries, gooseberries, currants, raspberries, zucchini, apricots, cherry plums, sea buckthorn and more. These are all different ways of conservation that a single word "pickled" does not convey. That was her generation, everyone was doing it. The current growth is generally not aware of what preparations for the winter. If I wanted apples in winter, I went to the store and bought them. But the recipes remained. Now such products are not produced at home, namely in the commercial networks. And ready for sale. Do not listen to youngsters who claim that there is nothing of the kind in Russia, they simply put no interest into.
this supermarket has much more traditional staff to buy that almost any supermarket in russia )))) we usually do all this meals by ourselves at homes) and mainly old generation
Hate isn't the right word for what Americans feel about Russians. If you ever run into a person who looks really similar to yourself out of the blue, it's more like that feeling. Fascination, but also not really OK with it.
Everyone hates Russia because of dictator Putin's fascist policies. But not as much as Russia hates everyone else. The amount of anti-western propaganda in Putinstan is unbelievable.
I love learning about different cultures but especially food :) I'm certain music and food are constants in every part of the globe we can all appreciate
Fooled me. I thought this was actually a "Russian" supermarket. It's American that sells Russian stuff. Like a Greek or Jewish or Chinese market. You lost me at Bensonhurst.
no, it's our ethnic foods by ethnic sellers. it's not physically in russia because its ethnic customers have immigrated to Bensonhurst and have a economy based on and supporting their needs.
There are some very large Russian communities in the NYC and Chicago areas. While there are US food products on the shelves, there is also just as much imported Russian grocery items too. They are owned by Russian Americans and vast majority of the people who shop at them speak Russian or some other Eastern European language.
@@frankkolton1780 I very much enjoyed shopping at Russian supermarkets when I was there last October. Especially Lenta. I was astounded at the wide variety of everything. Meat. Fish. Produce. Beer. Wine. Booze. I did a few videos on my channel...
I shall admit the store looks pretty decent and has a nice selection of things you can actually get in a typical Rusiian supermarket . I would even say that meats and cold cuts from the video look more appetizing.
Pickled everything and cured meat: the foods of people who felt the need to store food over long periods of time. This girl was respectful by being polite in regards to the tastes.
it seems you need to stop studying the world through a monitor, to issue a passport and at least once to travel outside your country. I think you will learn a lot of new things.
If it is pure pickling then there will not be any vinegar used. Fermenting foods is the correct term. Fermenting foods was started a very long time ago as a way to keep food edible for long periods of time when there were no refrigerators and freezers. Fermenting foods is done by placing the food item in a crock. Then a heavy brine solution (salt & water) is poured over the food items until all of it is submerged in the brine. Stones are often used to weigh down the food items so they do not float causing part of the food to rise out of the brine. Spices are often placed into the crock to add distinctive flavors, like dill weed with cucumbers to make dill pickles, etc. A top is placed over the crock that has an airlock that allows off gassing of the fermentation process out but stops outside air getting in. If you enjoy pickles that you've purchased at the grocery stores I can guarantee you'll like real fermented pickles more.
blaby4ever i am sorry but we do have a lot of vegetables... in that store too... becouse u are vegan every market should only sell vegan food.? Amd meat should be purchased from a blackmarket or what? I am sorry but i dont get it... becouse you are a vegan you cant pass some meat on the self while u are shopping vegan food?
+Bence Zsigárdi this guy isn't vegan, he just thinks the intention is to say 'fuck you' to vegans when actually it's not, it's just the result of the free market.
I was amazed at how similar it was to stores here in America. We don't have that vast variety of meat product in regular stores but our selection is usually good and we have specialty shops that sell cured meat product. Eating blood was forbidden in the new testament so you don't see a lot of blood sausage in America tho you can still find it. We have vast selections of convenience foods like chips, cereal, frozen foods, and cheese in our stores. Overall I would feel quite comfortable walking into the store above as the layout and everything feel familiar.
Pickle done with salt. It is natural preservative used for many centuries. This is how you keep food in your storage and does not let it go bad. Turks also pickle everything.
I would say that everybody, with a brain and a desire to eat all winter. pickles food as well as dry foods (and smoke meats). Americans have lost touch with rural life so completely that they have no realistic idea of what basic life and agriculture is like. Much of what she is oohing and ahing over and finding amusing are common methods and foods in rural areas of the U.S. I am sure I'm being a little snotty but what is so funny about a frozen pig? Does she fall about laughing when she sees a quarter of beef or a 30 lb turkey? I'm not Russian but I am finding her more than a little annoying.
Yes we pickle watermelons, but personally me I don't like it :( I think most of people too- its salty, has weird taste)) About ready meat-sausages: on a feast we have a plate of that in different variety and cheeses, its like a starter :) Welcome to Eastern Europe)
I love love love Russian food. They know how to eat, and you NEVER go home hungry. My husband is a Russian Jew, and holy crap, I could eat my Cherokee convert self sick on the food. I make a lot of the food as well, and I can my borscht if I have the time in the pressure cooker.
She only weighed 105 pounds when they started filming (the experience lasted for 72 hours before she exited the store). However, the quality of the video, overall, is excellent.
Макс Сим, ты живёшь в американском мире. К тому же писать комментарии под видео на языке создателя этого видео - это хорошая манера. Так ему будет понятнее, о чём тут беседуют.
Great video, but no offence, going to a "Russian" store in NY will tell you nothing about actual Russian stores and Russian culture. I am Russian, I've noticed that all Russian stores in the US are owner by Eastern Europian jews and operate oretty much like an American store, nothing like stores/markets in Russia. I am not saying it's bad, but it's just really far from a Russian store. To give you an example, Russian stores in US are just as close to original culture as Panda Express to Chinese culture...(not close at all)
These videos shouldn't be titled "How to..." because she doesn't know what she's doing and is just exploring like any of us would. Not what I was expecting and not really informative then. A bit cringey too - "the Russians do this" (based on her one observation in a store). Thank goodness I haven't seen one in a Chinese market, I'd be so annoyed.
Ok, holodezh as it goes, doesn’t made from chicken and jello, it made from beef bones with a little bit meat on them and spices, you can add chicken or pig ears to it but I personally like it when it mostly viyshka (stock), so basically boiling beef bones for 10 hours making stock turn into jello when cooled. Bones of course taken out. It’s made on New Years Eve holidays basically because it’s colder than Winterfell here and its actually quite nutritious. And in times when it was invented you couldn’t just waste those big bones that you can’t make soup with because there is not much meat on them.
Bat Hell I'm a conservative! Lol. If you think all vegetarians or vegans are liberals. You have a lot to learn about us. I'm also Christian. The bible says what to eat in three of the books(like in Revelations KJV Bible chp 2:22. Meat is unclean now days. Plus studies show meat causes cancer.
Anna B well, in Orthodox Christianity about 200 days of religious fasting. meat is not used. besides vegan and vegatarians, too. I have a couple of friends, although it is not very common in Russia.
Anna B i am a medical student please NEVER say meat causes cancer.....it doesn't PROCESSED meat causes cancer. There is research going on for raw red meat for carcinogens but there is no proof yet.

Being a Russian person watching this in Canada, this looks like absolute paradise. We have a similar store in Toronto called Yummy Market but nowhere near as massive as this.
That's one of the cleanest, freshest and versatile grocery shops I've ever seen in my life.
Johnny Seit Pataboom Pataboom......
+sini Siren you are part of the Western Zionist media.. that's why.. ;-)
But it s not in Russia
That's unfortunate ...
Amy Richards wow u just look lovely
That’s hilarious how you commented Russians' love for meat - I’m Russian (a muscovite at that), I’m a vegetarian and I’m being judged for it all the time
Иван Грязин and now imagine, you are Russian and don't drink alcohol 😰
Nakop I barely drink, actually. I can allow myself a glass of wine or champagne once in a while but nothing more)
Иван Грязин and? Are your surroundings nagging you like mine?
"C'mon drink something, you're already an adult after all"
"you don't need to be shy, just drink"
"he's not drinking because his parents are around. C'mon, they won't mind. You're old enough."
They seem not to be able to just accept that I don't drink any alcohol no matter who's around or not 😰
Nakop yeah, sometimes it happens... it’s like they really want you to have some no matter what
Иван Грязин бля тупые веганы не дня не проживут не сказав что они веганы
I watch Life of Boris solely for his cooking videos and man, I was super excited about all the Russian food in this video :)
I am Asian.I shop at Russian supermarket. I don't see kuvas there. I love kuvas.
+Alvaro Bonilla it's spell kvass. my bad. it's a beverage made from rye bread.
what is kuvas?
Kvas
3rd; Grey Goose, 2nd; Belvedere & 1st place; Chopin Potato Vodka.
been at that store in Bensonhurst and loved it.
Well some people might like you
You'd pickle to if you had winter for 5 months out of the year...
She would freeze, if she has winter for 7 months out of the year...
lol it's 3 months.
Ilya Piminov bruh you cannot be serious rn? Very far north and very far south winters are long days are short and summers are short
but it is not healthy to eat pickled food, fresh is better
You do know that there is a thing call orthorexia right? You should look it up.
Thanks, I really enjoyed this video.
watermelon the best but you should pickle ONLY the RED part of it ! also great after vodka)
Павел Викторов I just wanna jump in here; eat the white part. It's also very good
“You know why Rabbit rhymes with Habit? Because it takes your whole life down a fucking bunny hole.”
I live in the Netherlands, unfortunately, there are no Russian shops like you, I would definitely come by
Stevan Nikolic there are Russian supermarkets in Germany.
That is a pretty small pig if she can pick it up.
It's a suckling pig, she didn't want to pick up the rabbit but was ok with picking up a dead piglet. LOL
it's a suckling pig and they are pretty common in grocery stores(esp at x-mas in italian neighborhoods), you just have to ask butcher. My 80 year old mother gets one for porchetta every year
Ikr I've seen pigs that were so huge and round they looked like a gigantic ball that would devour me into pieces and then eat those pieces
oh ya, I go to this place almost every day, seriously, but how she puts all the food is a lot less then the best part of the actual store.
Very tasty.
If you can't pay, just offer your pet dancing bear as collateral
вы прирожденный комик...
Здравствуйте Russia!!!! Us Mexicans eat beef tongue too! Tacos de lengua!!!
Ed Ibarra, it's so delicious right
501st Clone Trooper yes it is!
Ed Ibarra it's delicious, mucho gusto
Mexicans eat only hot tongue though. Russians eat it only cold, like ham.
it`s actually tasty
Love russian food. I frequently make buckwheat kasha, piroshki, pelmeni and borscht. They are wonderful comfort food. Love, love...
this supermarket has much more traditional staff to buy that almost any supermarket in russia )))) we usually do all this meals by ourselves at homes) and mainly old generation
Russians don't typically pickle with vinegar, they pickle with brine. It's a different flavor, completely.
Why is America so against Russia? Seems like a nice and peaceful place. God bless both countries and hope they work things out.
Little Donkey The US see Russia as a threat to their word domination, thats why America hates Russia
Russia is always supporting America’s enemies
Little Donkey where did you find that?
Dang I am hungry. Do not have a market like that in this neck of the woods.
you forgot the staple of every russian house... KVASS
I shall admit the store looks pretty decent and has a nice selection of things you can actually get in a typical Rusiian supermarket . I would even say that meats and cold cuts from the video look more appetizing.
Russian food looks gorgeous..
Rosida Andriyana 🖕🏿
This video is a fiction. This is not a Russian store.
Rosida Andriyana
Only if you like fasfood.
Pickled everything and cured meat: the foods of people who felt the need to store food over long periods of time. This girl was respectful by being polite in regards to the tastes.
It is true! You can buy it at some markets!
I LOVE PICKLED WATERMELON!!! :-D
i want pickled watermelon please
Excellent piece, loved how each isle was gone through and all the explanations of each product with a reference to her family!!
Now that's a grocery store, meat, meat and more meat!
That Russian supermarket looks way much better than most Real Russian supermarkets. NICE :)
My recommended videos never disappoint.
this made me really happy as a Russian person for some reason
cool video! that is awesome that you show us people not from the area how your ancestors and you eat. thanks!
Есть захотелось, пойду Тефтелек с пюрешкой наверну=)
This looks so much better than any supermarket in actual Russia
yeah because its jew city new york.
No, is not more is what my Chelyabinsk city...
Have you ever been to Перекрёсток or Лента? They're quite beautifully arranged.
it seems you need to stop studying the world through a monitor, to issue a passport and at least once to travel outside your country. I think you will learn a lot of new things.
I suppose u r either just way too poor to buy food in "Азбука вкуса" or "Глобус гурмэ", or u have never been to Russia at all.
Its like a giant middle finger to vegans
Russians are anti-vegan. LOL Meat is their daily diet.
blaby4ever i am sorry but we do have a lot of vegetables... in that store too... becouse u are vegan every market should only sell vegan food.? Amd meat should be purchased from a blackmarket or what? I am sorry but i dont get it... becouse you are a vegan you cant pass some meat on the self while u are shopping vegan food?
+Bence Zsigárdi this guy isn't vegan, he just thinks the intention is to say 'fuck you' to vegans when actually it's not, it's just the result of the free market.
I actually know a lot of Russian vegans
Leopoldo Ferrari there are retarded ppl in every nation
I was amazed at how similar it was to stores here in America. We don't have that vast variety of meat product in regular stores but our selection is usually good and we have specialty shops that sell cured meat product. Eating blood was forbidden in the new testament so you don't see a lot of blood sausage in America tho you can still find it. We have vast selections of convenience foods like chips, cereal, frozen foods, and cheese in our stores. Overall I would feel quite comfortable walking into the store above as the layout and everything feel familiar.
This IS an American store, I've been to it along with its other location in sheepshead bay. It's primarily for russian speakers
definitely wanna shop here
Pickle done with salt.
I'm not Russian but I am finding her more than a little annoying.
open buffet in the supermarket? Where do i get my sample plates?
Russian supermarket looks more fabulous than my any supermarket I know.
Yes we pickle watermelons, but personally me I don't like it :( I think most of people too- its salty, has weird taste)) About ready meat-sausages: on a feast we have a plate of that in different variety and cheeses, its like a starter :)
Welcome to Eastern Europe)
when u say lots of mayonnaise, I think of Boris LOL 😂 lol pickled watermelon 🍉
I love love love Russian food. They know how to eat, and you NEVER go home hungry. My husband is a Russian Jew, and holy crap, I could eat my Cherokee convert self sick on the food. I make a lot of the food as well, and I can my borscht if I have the time in the pressure cooker.
Jews are not Russians.
elena79rus she meant her husband is Russian half jew
+Pov Yi
A Jew cannot be Russian. A Jew can be FROM Russia.
Ok I'm from pa and never knew we had an extensive chain of Russian super markets learn something every day
Sour cream is gorgerous!
and fresh buckthorn ( or buckthorn tea) with honey is the coolest alternative to orange juice and orange fresh. really tasty
not only rusian pickled every thing but rusian also adidas every thing
rusian without addidas is like chinese people without chop stick
DOnker Russian also Mercedes and BMW everything. Take that dumbass!
it seems your information is about 10 years out of date. Your sources are running very late.
@@guyverbio6003 , more like 25 or so. Now days American kids, especially with Russian roots ,are having fun dressing up like gopniki .
Being Russian myself I knew I had a hankering for sour cream but damn! Russian supermarkets are impressive
So, you have a rabbit phobia. Or is it a dead rabbit phobia. They are delicious.
Louis Sparks Rabbit is not kosher - that's why :)
no, rabbit is jumper
Elena Herwagen I'm pretty sure pigs are not kosher as well yet she picked him up
It's cuz she feels sorry for the rabbit, like seeing a pickled puppy or kitten.
Shakes McTremens seems a bit unfair for the other animals
She only weighed 105 pounds when they started filming (the experience lasted for 72 hours before she exited the store). However, the quality of the video, overall, is excellent.
What's the pickled fruits? As a Russian I have never seen anything like that in Russia.
C'mon, haven't you ever eaten моченые яблоки и груши?
Oleg S
I don't even know what it is.
Don't worry you don't miss anything ;)
пзд Русские друг с другом по инглишу говорят! вы че ?
Макс Сим, ты живёшь в американском мире. К тому же писать комментарии под видео на языке создателя этого видео - это хорошая манера. Так ему будет понятнее, о чём тут беседуют.
as an asian this is so interesting! love seeing people’s culture
This place looks awesome
Great video, but no offence, going to a "Russian" store in NY will tell you nothing about actual Russian stores and Russian culture. I am Russian, I've noticed that all Russian stores in the US are owner by Eastern Europian jews and operate oretty much like an American store, nothing like stores/markets in Russia. I am not saying it's bad, but it's just really far from a Russian store. To give you an example, Russian stores in US are just as close to original culture as Panda Express to Chinese culture...(not close at all)
I actually go to netcost every week and the food there is delicious, they have russian ice cream too 😋😋
Mmmm я люблю мороженое
These videos shouldn't be titled "How to..." because she doesn't know what she's doing and is just exploring like any of us would. Not what I was expecting and not really informative then. A bit cringey too - "the Russians do this" (based on her one observation in a store). Thank goodness I haven't seen one in a Chinese market, I'd be so annoyed.
Yeah, I have seen some of her other ones, too, just poking around, nothing about dishes to make with certain items.
So not many raw vegans there.
Vegans cannot survive in Russia, its not kindergarden for polical correct gummy bears
In Russia we eat vegans ...
Bat Hell
I'm a conservative!
I love Russian food and I'm not even Russian...... I always find time to shop there once a week. Awesome stuff!
Я обожаю российские продукты
A r i s t o c r a T k
I do too
