    I’m in tears laughing at the garlic shaker speed test. On the right, he just smacks it with a knife and peels in 7 seconds. On the left he’s sitting there just looking around at the camera crew shaking this weird cylinder around for 30 seconds.

    • @jevinliu4658
      @jevinliu4658 3 года назад +8

      To be fair, that test was clearly unfair. Ideally you would have multiple garlic cloves in there, and the garlic cloves would be aged 5-7 days.

    • @stone5against1
      @stone5against1 3 года назад +33

      @@jevinliu4658 Yea but as he said, who has time for that? And he's right.. Unless you really use a lot of garlic and always have some lying around, chances are you'll buy it the day you need it or a day or two before, and it wont have time to dry up properly. That, and whacking it with a knife really is the most effective method. It's one of those gadgets that solve a problem that didn't exist in the first place.

      @@pambinobequeno5062 He meant who has time to wait 5-7 days to let the cloves dry out? And that's what it takes for this "gadget" to work properly, so it seems. No thanks. I'll just smash it and peel it, for the 3 seconds THAT takes, and not have to worry whether or not the clove is dry enough.

    • @rakninja
      @rakninja 2 года назад +1

      also not fair is the fact the shaker had to peel 4 cloves, but the manual method only did 1. if we extrapolate the 7 sec peel time for one clove to 4, the time on the manual method is actually 3 secs slower.

    Not sure if Dan Formosa will see this but for that potato/ apple peeler my wife and I have it and my wife does large scale canning of apples each year around 4-5 bushels of apples so about 160-200 pounds every years and it has held up for about 5 years. I do agree that it can be sturdier and the tweak on the adjuster would be nice but it is more durable than it was given credit.

    • @Avalikia
      @Avalikia 5 лет назад +134

      I agree with you, but at the same time I feel the need to point out that perception is huge from a marketing standpoint. If something seems flimsy and likely to break, that's a design flaw whether or not it's actually true - fewer people will give it a try and the product won't sell as well. It can be worth it to a product designer to add totally superficial 'reinforcement' elements to their product so that it seems sturdier for that reason alone.

    • @thomastighe7060
      @thomastighe7060 5 лет назад +71

      @@Avalikia I just think the 1 rating on willing to buy on a perceived durability is a fairly weak assessment on that metric alone when it performed the function admirably. In many of these videos he does not comment on the durability on a given product. I know I have a perception bias on this. Heck I have even dropped it a few times and my wife did not know. I agree it could be better but taking it from a 4/5 rating in the other two categories but than say not to buy it. If he snapped a piece off in the video I would fully agree but it was only perceived as well not a demonstration of it breaking (which he has another product).

      @@justalittlebitmo Agree... and mine came with two replacement blades stored at the bottom, so no complaints either. Also he was dead wrong complaining about the durability of the pins, those are no likely to fail, ever. The weaker structural element is the thin plastic mounting for the blade, and even that has held just fine.

      I've never seen 'fresh' garlic in stores until recently (in Russia) - I mean when it's kinda wet like in this video. The shaker will probably work better on garlic that we usually use here and see in stores - it's pretty dry already, no need to wait for it to dry specifically to peel it. I think the process will be quite similar to shelling seeds, like wheat or sunflower seeds.

    Spot on about the issues with adjusting the Potato express. You get a little used to it after a while, but there were some really simple ergonomic adjustments that wouldn't have altered the sleek appearance, and would have greatly improved usability. It does *feel* a little cheaper than you'd like, but we've been using ours for a while, and we haven't even had to replace the blade yet. It does come with a little tool for extracting the eyes, and shaving/cutting off the top and bottom skin does take a few extra seconds - But it you need to peel MANY potatoes, you can do that after loading the next one, and it can save a lot of time in the long run.
    Plus if you want to use the skins in anything (fried potato skins, vegetable spaghetti) - it's a nice fairly even strip that it shaves off.

    In Northern Europe it's really common to use potato peeling gloves for new potatoes in early summer. They are really small potatoes that have a really thin papery skin that's difficult to remove with a knife or a peeler without sacrificing too much of the potato itself, so rubbing them with something coarse is the optimal way to go. You're not supposed to use them for already cooked bigger potatoes.

    Best peeler for potatoes, carrots, beets, ginger and the like is literally a spoon. Nothing beats it. Press thumb against the back and face the edge down, and peel away from you using the edge to scrape. Easier and less wasteful than a knife (even if you're amazing with a knife, you will still cut away some of the flesh - although you can nearly nullify this using the back of the knife to scrape instead of cutting with the sharp edge), just as fast or faster, and you can't cut yourself either. Even plastic spoons work.
