The Ingenious Design of the Aluminum Beverage Can

- Опубликовано: 13 апр 2015
- Bill details the engineering choices underlying the design of a beverage can He explains why it is cylindrical, outlines the manufacturing steps needed to created the can, notes why the can narrows near it lid, show close ups of the double-seam that hold the lid on, and details the complex operation of the tab that opens the can.

I’ve watched this video at least 4 times now. RUclips recommends it to me every couple years, and I watch it every time. So much amazing engineering on what we think as a simple invention, but it really isn’t. It’s the evolution of 80-100 years of engineering, and has been improved over and over again until the consumer can’t even see the improvements anymore. It’s gone from a good design, to the best possible design within the parameters. Truly amazing.
He’s coming out with a new book this week!
Yesterday!
If you ever find yourself questioning biological evolution, just think about this. This is just a behavioral version of the same process. There's continual experimentation. Against that, the variations are tested. If they work, we keep them. If they don't, they are replaced. By keeping the things that work well, we close the search space, so to speak. We eliminate a lot of the randomness. And the various selective pressures all compete against each other with the more important ones having more weight on deciding whether a variant works and is kept or doesn't work and gets lost. Here, we see variants tested for ease of production, amount of material required, cost, material strength across a whole variety of factors, amount of volume contained, amount of pressure accommodated, stackability (tensile and compressible strength), even simple ease of use by a human so that it fits in a human hand, opens with a human finger, and doesnt encourage the human to do stupid or wasteful things with a tab. And biological machines like proteins, enzymes, tissues, etc, all evolve in an analogous process. (Yeah, I'm a nerd =D)
Too bad they don’t implement the same standards and ideas in vehicles. Cars are cheap plastic and throw away design anymore. Disgusting.
Wish cars were perfected and made to last

I grew up in the 60s, and this reminds me of films we used to watch in school. Just the facts. The narrator lets the subject matter be the star. Many narrators of current content go overboard in trying to make it seem exciting, and their enthusiasm detracts rather than adds.
As a survey archaeologist, I have been using cans to date the age of historic sites discovered in the field. We need to know when sites are over 50 years old. When I began my career, the steel beverage can with church-key openings was historic and all aluminum cans were modern. As time went by, bi-metal beverage cans (steel cans with aluminum tops) became the indicators of historic sites. Then pull tabs became historic. Now we monitor the shape of the aluminum can openings to precisely date the can manufacture year. I was unaware that can diameters had changed through the years, this I learned from this video! In the future, printed bar codes will help archaeologist date sites. However, I am finishing up my career, so will leave bar codes to the new generation!

5:37 My family had a vending business, and some of our machines had a setup that kept the cans in a series of loops with metal guides that held the top and bottom sides of the cans. Needless to say, when they made the top smaller, the cans could then escape that loop or get jammed, and sometimes led to them falling out and exploding in spectacular fashion.
Other machines though didn't have that problem since they had the guides in the middle.

This guy could talk about dirt and still make it interesting.
but dirt IS very interesting... "HUMANS" even turn into dirt! How can we not be interested? ;-)
Beyond Psychology *vsauce music plays* but what even IS dirt? may it be the production of alien lifeforms or maybe just an anomaly in the time space continuum?
Straiden I enjoy Vsauce. ;-)
Are they even alien? Perhaps they are just more of the same. Masses of microbiological symbiosis. Complex consciousness.
Perhaps the universe is a life-form of which we and the so-called aliens are the sensory organs and or brain cells of said universe or lifeform.
Even if the aliens did create the dirt and us, what created the aliens? If something created the aliens then what created the aliens creator? Eventually emergence becomes our answer out of infallible logic.
In regards to space time...
Time is a mathematical tool of measurement. It's a representation of motion. Objects in motion with certain structural geometries will interact with other objects in motion and that will produce the so-called dirt, in the long run...
So that would be correct that dirt is a product of the space time continuum... as are we all.
Straiden as simple as possible... ruclips.net/video/GJjaQkfGjMU/видео.html that is what there it is.

Worked in a rolled aluminum mill for years and never knew how our end product was made into a beverage can - an amazing process, great presentation.
Adoring shame that they never showed you what the end products were, I think more of us would be satisfied with our work if we saw where it was going in a more direct way. Especially in manufacturing like you have brought up.
Personally I also think it's amazing we live in a world where manufacturing aluminum is relatively easy, I hear it the turn of the last century that it was so difficult to refine that despite its relative common place nature even a child could make quite a lot of money selling the stuff directly and it's not in bulk either.
I hope I haven't been too intrusive I just find this whole situation fascinating :-)
BRILLIANT, I LOVE THIS BLOKE BECAUSE HE SPEAKS SO CLEARLY THUS MAKING THE PROGRAM SO EASY TO UNDERSTAND, AND NO LOUD MUSIC! 😊
I watch this every few years and enjoy it like the first watch. This and the injection molding video are peak YT. Bill's a fantastic lecturer.
Thank you
@@engineerguyvideo the video is 7 years old, this comment is 4 weeks old, and you still responded?? Absolutely incredible. Just goes to show how you care about your audience and your content. Keep up the good work!
I’m assuming everything got this in their recommended again? Definitely not complaining lol. Never thought 12 minutes about cans could go by so quickly
@@water4039 yeah bro, just saw this video. Shame that the channel does not upload anymore
@@engineerguyvideo When are you coming back?
Why is Mark Hamill teaching me about aluminium cans?
Well that's what happened to his force ghost in the next life
Also he sounds like Neil DeGrasse Tyson
Uhm that’s not mark hamill

Because The Force (of internal pressurization) is strong with them
Worked in this industry for over 30 years and still found this interesting thanks to good presentation style.
The highest compliment that I can give this video is that it is perfect for what it is, and it deserves it fully.
I’ve watched this on average 3 times a year. Anytime I see it in my recommendations or I remember it I go back and give it a watch because it’s so concise and informative
I know right? Same with me over here, one way or the other this video always goes back to my recommendeds, and I can't help it but watch it until the end.
It's just so well made and manages to actually explain how the can it's made, why it's made the way it is and some extra things. This is how things should be explained.
Yeah i remember watching this few years ago too. His presentation is incredible.
I thought I was alone.
Saaaaame
Same
That's the type of content that RUclips was made for.
I thought it was made for cat videos, and home movies
It was actually made for sharing family videos.
Sexy Biscuit jes
Then the brainiacs at Google decided to demonetize the production of quality videos
This remains one of the most iconic videos in RUclips history.
I have a job interview at a can facility today and have been learning as much as I can on the process of how they are made, this video was super cool thanks
I would like to drink out of a sphere.

Yet again the algorithm has brought us back together.
I enjoy it every time.
See you next year.
I always look forward to it.
I operate a CNC Turret punch for a job and it’s interesting to see the similarities between what my machine does and how these cans are made, especially with the forming dies and punches. Great video!
Really awesome video, lots of things to learn . Enjoy
