My most loved cricketer, I happened to met him at Bangalore railway station in the year 1978, I took his autograph on five rupee note,I shook my hand with him and spoke for one minute,that day was a most memorable day in my life,love you fishy.
Way back in 2002 , I was doing my security check at the Mumbai international terminal for my official trip to Taiwan and I saw the security personnel doing the frisking and other checks on a short statured man who was quietly following the procedure..I was stunned to see that he was none other than GRV !!! I immediately asked the security staff.. you know whom you are doing this check and frisking?? He is the genius GRV.. They pleaded ignorance and allowed him to pass...unfazed, GRV maintained his customary calm and smile and shook hands with me and enquired about me..and about family and profession.it was a lifetime experience for me though I am a hardcore SMG devotee.. He was coaching kenya then..he signed autograph gracefully and moved on!!

My all time hero is GR Vishwanath. Was lucky to have watched his 97no against Llyod's men in 1975 and his century against WI in 1978 both at Chepauk. Chepauk was know to be the fastest and bouncy wicket in 70s. No helmet then. We may have sachins dravids virats, but something is missing with these stars. Which can only been seen and experienced to realise. Long live Vishy.

Gundappa Vishwanath was first spotted by M L Jaisimha, one of the shrewdest cricketers of 60s and 70s who was unlucky not to captain the Country, when GRV was playing in Hyderabad. After seeing GRV playing one over, Jaisimha predicted GRV playing for the Country. About GRV's 97 not out in Chennai Test of 1974 - 75 Series against West Indies, much has been said, including the unforgettable straight driven 4 off Andy Roberts. In fact in the previous Test in Calcutta, GRV scored a Century (in the second innings) and India won that Test. Arguably the 1974 - 75 home Series against West Indies belongs to Gundappa Vishwanath as he, in the absence of Sunil Gavaskar (due to injury), single handedly made the Series close from 2 - 0 down to 2 - 2 level after Madras Test, leaving the final Test in Mumbai as decider of the Series.
There was a famous tamil movie in late 60"s in which a song which has *vishwanathan velai vendum*(meaning mr vishwanath we need job) We all use to sing this song in tamil by changing the word * vishwanathan we needs runs from you* (vishwanath runs vendum) Such a glorious, naturally talented batsman and always a treat to watch... and remembers me of his fantastic 113 vs Australia during 1981 82 test series against the in formidable attacks of pascoe, lillee and et al.. As I remember,you came one down.everyone was waiting to watch you playing your favourite square cuts and late cuts.But, for our bad luck,you were clean bowled by the very first Raghavan delivery which pitched in the middle of the pitch and shooted like a bullet to uproot your stumps.this type of delivery is called pinda in local words.later the match was saved by Sudhakar Rao for your team.

Vishy would have scored more than 150 if we counted all the runs that he denied for himself when he farmed the attack with Bedi and Chandra. Amazing strokes would be fielded at the boundary line with not a single being run. So unselfish was he. I remember, even when Lloyd caught Chandra at slip, he was most disappointed that the catch came to him. Even a forward defensive played by Vishy was more attractive than the best attacking strokes played these days. Such aspects as his defence technique to smother Lance Gibbs spin, are truly extinct. People talk about his square cut, but his strokes of his hips were so powerful, remember he was only 5'2" and he had to meet deliveries just short of good length near his chest.
Tremendous batsman, specially when his team needed the runs, one of the most stylish players to have played the game. But, I think he was on Ok fielder not exactly great. Gavaskar was a better slip fielder than Vishy.
