Try turning off face and eye tracking and setting the AF range limiter. There’s a custom setting. I have it mapped to a function button and can switch to that with it set at 0.6-1.9 for talking head stuff. Game changer. However tracking speeds and sensitivity info in your video still applies. Great info as always.

Philip, I think the work you have been doing in AF has been VERY important. The moment a persons minds strays from the story being told on camera to "God I hope that was in focus" your story runs the risk of being compromised. In todays smaller and smaller budgets where you are on your own, focus needs to be one less thing to worry about. -------- side thought, Panasonic needs to get on board and figure this out!! They have been loosing DSLR/DSLM video business to Sony and Canon over this very thing.

I have the same feelings about the autofocus on my XT4. The funny thing is, that the Sigma 18-35 with the Fringer adapter gives me the smoothest and most reliable autofocus on the XT4. It just racks quickly but calmly. It gives it that more polished Canon like feel. The Fuji lenses have so much breathing that they can be inconsistent for sure.

    • @philipbloom

@@philipbloom Yes. But, important caveat. Many Canon and Sigma lenses don't perform as well adapted with the Fringer. The 18-35 just happens to be pretty darn spectacular in that application. Plus it just so happens to be a wonderful lens. A bit big, but great. Thx again for the wonderful video. I have the Viltrox lenses, and I see the exact same thing. This is a really good and unbiased presentation on the XT-4's AF performance! I use the X-T3 and found it to perform the same. The AF is good when it works, but it's just so unpredictable at times. I also think the variety of AF settings can become quite tiresome when trying to find the right settings to meet the shooting environment. I often refer it to being too fiddly when compared to my canon gear. Fuji needs to get some video lenses real fast if they pride these X cameras on their video features. Great work mate.

Fantastic content. I've been doing a lot of research for a good general use camera and at this point I think I might start off with a Canon or Sony for the better AF and give Fuji time to catch up with their AF technology. IMO Fuji seems to be the best stills camera largely due to their more naturual color science, manual camera controls, and excellent resolution and detail, but the inconsistent AF is holding them back from being a better contender for video as well.

Fuji seems like a camera with good autofocus (unlike Panasonic) and stabilisation (unlike Sony), but both are semi-reliable. And in a lot of situations, when it's yes or no, you have to stick with manual focus and other means of stabilisation.

Great review as usual. If I may give my opinion regarding fuji cameras, I use two xt3's for professional video work and all I can say from my experience (just 1year) is that the AF is obviously not 100% reliable compared to my sony A7iii but it really does the job with my sigma 18-35 + fringer pro ii, fujinon 23mm f1.4 and kit lens 18-55 f2.8-4. This is not a biased point of view, just wanted to mention that because I'm not making this comment to advertise Fuji, I also like canon and my sony. It's just that sometimes it annoys me to read comments from people on RUclips who've never tried this gear and just disparage it just by watching reviews focusing on the bad "AF". I just want to point out that if you do not push the record button, the settings have no effect whatsoever. If you are recording through the HDMI only then you're in for some fun. At least this was the case with the X-H1 and X-T3. But even so, the lenses really do need updating. I only ever use the 16mm and the 18-55mm for video. Viltrox lenses do not accept or get affected by the settings at all so they're only good for when there's no need to rack focus or you can maintain a constant distance to what you're focusing on.

There are good AF lenses with fuji (16-55mm f2.8, 18-55mm f2.8-4) and then there are bad ones.... Sad about this. Really hoped it would be good. Makes me glad about my decision though. I was at a crossroads half a year ago when I decided to go mirrorless, leaving Canon DSLR's. I was deciding on going to the full frame RF system, or going small and light APS-C with a Fuji system. Happy with the EOS R and it's reliable and natural AF, and super excited about the R5 & R6.

I just wish Canon could find a way to give us control over the settings for tracking. Only their cinema cameras do that. I covered these issues in my 50 minute epic AF video last month. Really hoping the R5 gets the control we need as the RF L lenses are SOOO fast and they need to be tamed.

    • @donafied
      @donafied 4 года назад

@@philipbloom Yes hopefully they add control! I saw in the other video you mentioned that it was an issue with the processor. The R5 is getting the new Digic X so hopefully they can add AF tracking settings. I use 3 RF L-lenses. The 50 f1.2 is the worst performing at video AF especially wide open. The zooms work great. (24-70 & 70-200). I have not tried the 15-35 or 24-105 but suspect they might even be better given one is wider and the other has a smaller aperture.

This is unfortunately the best video about the matter.
Unfortunately, because it shows the structural/systemic problem: the old fast lenses are just not made for video - so we would need new, video centric ones. Which Fuji will probably not develop any soon, as there are already small two-ish ones for videomaking and the demand for big bulky fast video lenses will probably be too small.
Means, we will have to work around the problem. Smart AF settings combined with strongly constrasting backgrounds - or even manual focussing (which is a pain in the a*s on Fuji, because the peaking is not good enough. Compared to Sony, e.g.).
As Canon's full frame entry machines are getting smaller and smaller, I might reconsider that brand...as much as i love Fuji.

Hello, in movie mode I've found if you have focus mode set to af-s and touchscreen focus set to af and start recording a video, you can touch the screen focusing without disengaging the af. The difference with af-c mode is in af-s mode you tap and the camera doesn't focus continuously with focus hunting. It only works when the camera is recording.

Hi Philip! Extremely thankful for your extensive test. I rent a 23mm F1.4 and had similar finding like yours. Sensitivity : 0 Speed : -1 is the best. It's crazy that if I just change the speed to 0 instead of -1, the lens go crazy with focus hunting like it's not sure, but once you set it to -1 for speed, it is then stable and smooth!
Besides, there is new firmware from Viltrox that seem to solve the problem with too snappy focus change, would you mind testing it and just let us know? Because I would like to get that viltrox 23mm f1.4 instead of Fuji 23mm F2. Thnks!

I have the same lens. It has driven me crazy because just love the Fujis color science. Everything looks good right out of the camera. Auto focus had me banging my head though because this camera checks every other box. I bought a Sony a6400 a few days ago and the auto focus is perfect and it takes a very nice looking pic/video but the fuji pic looks better but I am gonna start using the Sony for video stuff and just edit in the color I guess. I will save the Fuji for stills. What really sucks instead of fixing this camera Fuji decides to release a XT-5 which makes my XT-4 worth less and makes me have to decide if I am gonna trust them again and spend that kind of money with them.
