Given Tuohy ran a 4:09 I don't think it mattered (she can only go so fast regardless of when she makes a move). She had to make up a big deficit and used a lot of energy in the process. Starting with the big lead Gear didn't have to expend as much energy and most likely would have had more for the finish no matter how it transpired.
I feel like she's not a kicker though, she seems to perform better when she takes the lead and runs it out of her competitors. It's just tough to anchor a 4x15 taking the baton at a deficit because unless your kick is amazing it's tough to go take the lead and still have time and energy to run it out.

@@phillylifer he wasn't saying that tuohy won, he's saying her 1500m leg was faster than gear's. Tuohy received the baton a few seconds after Gear, and she also made up the huge gap, which makes her split faster even though she didn't win the race.
Of course since Gear finished first it didn't matter that she didn't run a faster leg. Looked like she was at pretty much max effort, but we don't really know that she couldn't have run slightly faster if she needed to.
krissy gear was going at it, she went off fast after getting the baton, leaving a fair amount of gap for tuohy to cover, arkansas are dmr champs, all of their runners executed and put their anchor in the better spot to win! great finish by krissy gear, even if tuohy ran faster than 4:09 it'd still be pretty hard to beat gear because she surely can run go with tuohy. , , , cannot ignore a great run by the sophomore also! plenty of years left to learn the ropes in college racing, once she acquires more tactical knowledge and skills, this girl will be a force to be reckoned with than what she already is now.
covering that 2-second gap took out tuohy's finishing kick that gap is big for a fast 1500m, even if she settled behind gear and try to outkick gear in the last 300m, it would have been extremely tough with gear having more left in her tank and being the faster runner in mid-distance .. tuohy is a 3000m-6k runner with immense speed
What a battle. Krissy Gear is a badass. Touhy has nothing to be ashamed of there either. Ran phenomenally (sub 4:10, right?). Got a bit gamed by a savvy senior. But tremendous efforts by both.
EXACTLY....this is what Tuohy needs she has to learn how to race and not run she has to work on her kick but also has to know unless she is going to put over 10 seconds on someone there is no need to make a move at 500m+ next race she will just ride her shoulder longer and make that move with 200-300m to go, she has to be able to know when she makes the move she can go full speed to the finish. At this level and these short distances you are not putting away someone who is basically your equal...especially considering she had to work to close the gap so she already made one move. Congrats to Gear on a great race and Arkansas for smashing the record. She may have run a time trial, meaning even though her public pr may be 4:12, her time trial pr could be much faster. Also fun fact, She ran a 4:09 in this race.
@@mr.mastermine7083 there was no time trial time that the public knew off, he was talking about PRs, and for tuohy its just 4:12 and gear had faster pb of 4:09 but yea tuohy cut down 3 seconds after running 4:12 just a month ago
@NOTREALLY HANKAARON Yes, she doesn't usually win by kick, but by being in front early and far ahead. The pace was so fast she never stretched out her competitors. The fact she started behind by 20 yards was another factor. I felt the relay was won with the 3rd leg. Tuohy gave a game try, but couldn't make up the ground and outkick her opponent.
It is not a duel when Tuohy has to spend her energy early on JUST TO CATCH UP!!!! Gregory, Ark's Third leg was Amazing to make up and give Ark. A decent lead. Ok, ok, And Credit to Arks fourth leg too. I CANNOT KNOCK ANY OF THESE GALS.......IT IS A VERY TOUGH RACE!
I am in awe of the talent there is now. Tuohy is a great athlete. My daughter, who runs high school track in Raleigh, and I are big fans. I'm convinced if she would have waited to pass at 200-300m to go instead of at 600m she would have won. If she can be a little more patient when there is a clear track and her opponent right in front of her, she'll become a great racer AND a really talented runner. I think I heard somewhere that she is inexperienced at racing because all of her high school races were just like time trials for her. She did show real patience in the 3000m NCAA indoor championships. So she's shown she can be patient. When she 'puts it all together' she will be just amazing. Even more amazing!
tuohy was undefeated for 3 years in cross country since her sophomore year till graduating hs and has 150+ wins in track.. has 5 gatorade trophies, 3 national titles in xc, 9x new balance champion, 5x dmr national champion, 4 national records and many more.. oh shes a valedictorian 4.59 gpa
She's not as fast at this distance as other comments have documented. The right strategy doesn't make up 3 seconds over 1000m. You can be the best and not the best at everything.
Wow. If Gear and Tuohy had started even they would have finished neck and neck. Watching Tuohy's powerful and long stride, I just didn't think Gear would be able to come back. She proved me wrong. What a fighter!
Excellent Race! Katelyn Tuohy has the Girls High School National Mile Record 4:33.87 and a PB 1500 meter time of 4:12 equivalent of a 4:29 Mile time. Tuohy had a about 15 meter gap to close from the beginning and ran a PB of 4:09 which is a 4:26 mile time. Big improvement! Excellent Race.
shes actually faster than katelyn, senior krissy gear has 2:04 800 and 4:09 1500m and is an experienced relay runner ~ they are the dmr national champs too ~ really really good race by both teams 💪🏻😤
Tuohy would have to run 4:08 or 4:07 to beat Krissy Gear. Tuohy ran 4:09 already 3-seconds faster than what she ran a month ago, and having to close a 2second gap after getting the baton, there was no winning strategy for tuohy, she was at disadvantage.. And gear just executed their race plan and did what she has been doing all year with her team , winning relays.
@@lorimart747 sadly people don't realize how big a 2 second gap is in a fast 1500m race.. tuohy did amazing, indeed the Gregory-gear tandem as the last 2 legs were too much for tuohy.. I believe she could have done and ran faster if she rested for 2 weeks coz she was not well rested, she ran a hard top time of 15:14 5k race 7 days prior to this race, that has some effect on the legs
Tuohy would have had to run a 4:07 to win for NC State. While people are high fiving Gear for "holding off" Tuohy, let's be clear that physics and the clock held off Tuohy. She spent a lot of energy to close the 15-20m gap, and when it came time to seal the deal, Gear had not spent her energy chasing down anyone, and had to use the smallest amount to slipstream Tuohy and pass her to grab the glory, even though Tuohy had bested everyone's split. I do wonder if it might have benefitted Tuohy to drop in behind Gear for another 200m and rest a smidge, and try and close it out, but it still would have required a 4:07/4:08 in that scenario and I just don't think that is doable (yet).
I don't think that record is going anywhere. Great race for both teams. This event is usually a yawn event with the winner running away with it. Everyone spread out. You won't find a better 4x1500.
9:35 to the end is JUST FANTASTIC...I had to watch it twice!! What's just so awesome is how each team played the different legs of the race, and how even after Krissy Gear got passed up by the "bigger kicker" Katelyn, she didn't give up, and came back to WIN...just an awesome race to watch!
Krissy Gear is the bigger kicker. So you think you can out kick the other runner, the place to be a few hundred meters before the finish is in second place. Krissy slowed, relaxed and waited for her to come around her. That is for 1500 meters and longer unless some one can set a steady pace that is faster than everyone else.
Tuohy spend too much energy making up those 20 meters. Gear meanwhile was conserving her energy until the last 200metres when she kicked it to high gear. By that point Tuohy didn’t have the energy. Perfect gameplan by Gear.
Good race but before the meet I expected to BYU to be right in the mix til the end. That was mostly based on the pre-race hype that I read about this 4x1500 showdown.
Awe crap [:C( . Tuohy has so much untapped power yet to unleash. Have been following you for three years sweetheart. You are so much stronger now. An all American beauty.

@@mr.mastermine7083 there was no time trial time that the public knew off, he was talking about PRs, and for tuohy its just 4:12 and gear had faster pb of 4:09 but yea tuohy cut down 3 seconds after running 4:12 just a month ago
They were wrong and it was corrected by Gordon I think to include the 4:09 from last year.
@@JF-dy2dr yep heard it
That's why I love track & field. I did think Touhy was invincible. Seemingly, she began her push 200 meters, too early. Great race.
Great race! I watched it without knowing who'd win. I was in suspense until the end.
Nice great race they both smashed the record
Touhy had too much to make up so actually ran her leg faster than Gear. Both fantastic!
It is not a duel when Tuohy has to spend her energy early on JUST TO CATCH UP!!!! Gregory, Ark's Third leg was Amazing to make up and give Ark. A decent lead. Ok, ok, And Credit to Arks fourth leg too. I CANNOT KNOCK ANY OF THESE GALS.......IT IS A VERY TOUGH RACE!
damn, a 4:09 split? thats moving.. thought tuohy would break the 4:10 barrier next year and not the next month after her 4:12
Krissy really put it in another gear.
"Sit and kick."
Touhy: What's that?
She's not as fast at this distance as other comments have documented. The right strategy doesn't make up 3 seconds over 1000m. You can be the best and not the best at everything.
THAT WAS A FVCKING AWESOME RACE!!
Wow!!! Super awesome finish 👏
Great to see Franklin Field, which dates back to before 1900, looking so good.
Wow. If Gear and Tuohy had started even they would have finished neck and neck. Watching Tuohy's powerful and long stride, I just didn't think Gear would be able to come back. She proved me wrong. What a fighter!
@NOTREALLY HANKAARON You spend an inordinate amount of time slagging on Tuohy. Did she swipe left you or something?
This is sport as sport should be. Magnificent race!
A great race. Two teams broke the national college record. Really awesome.
Wow wow wow... What a hell of a race!!
Excellent Race.
katelyn tuohy ran 4:06 at ACC Championships, watch the race on our channel!
Outstanding race...😲😲
Wow! Outstanding ladies!!
The first place anchor must have run the run of her life. Did anybody expect her to come back from behind to beat Katie? Surprised me.
shes actually faster than katelyn, senior krissy gear has 2:04 800 and 4:09 1500m and is an experienced relay runner ~ they are the dmr national champs too ~ really really good race by both teams 💪🏻😤
having been a Miler, that final pass gave me goosebumps!
Excelentísimo!!!! Ya llegará tu momento Katelyn, se nota que sigues avanzando, ve con cuidado que ya estás muy cerca. Felicidades!!!!!!
What about the third runner for arkansas she done an amazing job. They all did really.
all 8 runners for both teams ran very well.
What a superb race by Arkansas. So well trained. Powerfully strong.
Gear ran a gutsy anchor leg beating Tuohy to give AR the new record. People forget that Gear PR is 4:09 and she held off Tuohy for the team win. WPS
Gears best was the ending....... The TWO BEST legs were Tuohy and Gregory!!! I am not downplaying the other women at all......They're all amazing!
Having to catch up, many don't realize how that takes a lot out of runners. Gregory was the deciding factor........ Smart to put her where she was.
@@cheryl6765 How come I cannot find her 5000 M race? It is like no one taped it. Ridiculous!
@@lorimart747 found a short clip of it, when you search her name
Tuohy would have had to run a 4:07 to win for NC State. While people are high fiving Gear for "holding off" Tuohy, let's be clear that physics and the clock held off Tuohy. She spent a lot of energy to close the 15-20m gap, and when it came time to seal the deal, Gear had not spent her energy chasing down anyone, and had to use the smallest amount to slipstream Tuohy and pass her to grab the glory, even though Tuohy had bested everyone's split. I do wonder if it might have benefitted Tuohy to drop in behind Gear for another 200m and rest a smidge, and try and close it out, but it still would have required a 4:07/4:08 in that scenario and I just don't think that is doable (yet).
yep! could not said this any better!
specially after a 15:14 5k just last saturday
I don't think that record is going anywhere. Great race for both teams. This event is usually a yawn event with the winner running away with it. Everyone spread out. You won't find a better 4x1500.
Wow awesome race. Great job to all
Great. How exiting! Thanks for showing and best wishes from Clownland (Germany). 🙂
Great battle!
she will bounce back! she always does!
9:35 to the end is JUST FANTASTIC...I had to watch it twice!!
What's just so awesome is how each team played the different legs of the race,
and how even after Krissy Gear got passed up by the "bigger kicker" Katelyn,
she didn't give up, and came back to WIN...just an awesome race to watch!
Katelyn Tuohy is fools gold!
Wow!!! Amazing race! I was rooting for Tuohy but this was a well deserved win for Gear!
Tuohy spend too much energy making up those 20 meters. Gear meanwhile was conserving her energy until the last 200metres when she kicked it to high gear. By that point Tuohy didn’t have the energy. Perfect gameplan by Gear.
Superb! Wanted Tuohy to win, but thrilling spectacle regardless
Brava! That was fantastic!
Quite a race!
