You’re correct about loan culture. Not enough systemic downward pressure on prices across the industry. PLUS increasing safety requirements and emissions / fuel economy requirements add to the costs. So many factors.
I may be in the minority but I’m a bigger fan of the Land Cruiser’s interior. I think the 4Runner’s is a tad overstyled and won’t age as well. Still, very cool green seats, love those.
I would agree with you, but I'm also going to add to that. As a 5th gen owner, I think the new 4runner has lost its identity. It looks too much like the Tacoma and also an older style dodge Durango. I love my 2016 4runner trail with kdss, and I think if I was going to trade her in ,it would be for the land cruiser.
I've come to really appreciate the simplicity and reliability of the older gen Toyotas (and price). Nosebleed prices, even though I can afford them are just a non starter.
They are built in Japan on a solid steel frame with very robust hybrid powertrain…. Not Mexico…. Labor costs are 100x…. The cost of a vehicle has very little to do with how fancy an interior is….
My wife really wants a new 4runner. Her 5th gen 4runner has 240,000 miles on it. However, given the state of Toyota's current reliability issues and pricing (WTAF is going on there?!), we've decided to keep the old 4runner and wait and see if any issues pop-up with the new 6th gen 'Runners.
If it's been well maintained it's got at least another 100,000 miles left in it. Just drive it till it dies. You'll be lucky to get 6k for it if you trade it in on a new one.
Heres my q: if something like the tundra has issue, and 2 years after the fact toyota will give you a 100% brand new engine.... i feel like having that issue is a bonus? Brand new engine with 0 miles on it? I dunno!

It makes no sense to put the same 4Runner engine in the Land Cruiser, which is probably more expensive. The Land Cruiser needed a bigger engine too justify it.
They have created a weird situation for themselves. A comparably equipped Land Cruiser and GX550 cost the same but the GX has a Twin Turbo V6. A comparable 4Runner should cost around $10k less than both.

I like the full time 4WD on the Landcruisers. I know some trim levels of the 4Runner will offer it, but not the Trail Hunter nor TRD Pro. I have a deposit on the TRD Pro. I wish I could get that option on that trim level. I live in a snowy region in Canada and some days have to drive on-road through patchy ice and snow.

I just got a new 2024 4Runner TRD Off Road premium for a little be less than $46.000, and this is the most I ever pay for a car. I got it because I know this car will run forever, even though is very retro , It will hold the value, it fits my lifestyle and will do everything I need it to do. I didn't want to wait for the new 4Runners that will be more expensive and after the Tundras and Tacomas problems who really wants a $60.000 dollar car that may be a headache.
2024's will be the last years of reliability that we can track. The 2025's are unknown currently how it will run for 10 years+. Judging by the current Tacoma's and their design, we need to wait for the redesign again in hopes they move the bump stops.
Just curious what was your previous vehicle? I tried to buy a ‘23 TRD 4Runner and couldn’t do it. Loved the idea and everything about it. But have had super new, modern vehicles… it was like driving a 20 year old car. I guess I just like modern transmissions and tech more than I thought.
@michaelhalstead64 I had in this order an FJ Cruiser, Crosstrek, and a Forester. Definitely, the technology in the Forester that was a 2019 was far way superior than the 2024 4RUNNER.
I like the exterior of the 4runner, and the interior of the Land Cruiser. I also really would want the Land Cruiser's lockable center Torsen, so that would push me into the Limited or Platinum trims of the 4runner if I were to go that model. At the same time, if you don't care about the MPGs as much, just spend the $70K on the Lexus GX Overtrail and get the twin turbo V6.
I almost waited for the 4Runner but got the LC first edition. Much more mature looking vehicle. Threw on some BFG K03 in 275/70 R18. Looks amazing. Stock tires make it look bad.
I just realized that as a 6'4" guy, the 4Runner interior is too small. I feel like I'm pouring out of the drivers seat. I love my 5th Gen so much but I'm going LC250 or GX550 when the hybrid comes out. I love the T4R community, so this is gonna be a hard one in 3 years. Great video BTW!
Dang, that sucks to hear. I'm a little shorter than you at 6'2 and was looking at getting a 2024 4Runner. That was my issue with my Tacoma is the seats had no leg support and felt like you were somehow sitting on the floor.
@@GBcommander the on the floor feeling isn't the problem. The 4Runner seats are a lot better than the Taco. I have seat jackers also but the seating position is fine. It's the interior space that is too tight. I came from a V8 Durango years ago and it was like I was driving my living room. I liked that. It was more like a Sequoia in terms of interior space.

I have a 2023 Limited 5th gen Runner. I do like the trailhunter and would probably go that route if/when I decide to let go of this tank that is know as the 5th gen. Perhaps I’ll keep it and buy the trailhunter.
Check the suspension bump stops on the 4Runner vs the LC. The new Tacoma has been having issues where the shocks have been breaking the top shock mounts because of that. The 4Runner shares the same poor/defective design as the new Tacoma. The new LandCruiser however has proper frame mounted bump stops.
Came here to say the same thing. I think time will be the thing to show why the LC being built for the global market vs the 4r and taco being for the us market makes the LC the better buy.

With this latest gen Tacomas and 4Runners they jacked the prices and cheapened out on the build. We also know they made the frame weaker - or in their speak applied strength to where it was needed. We know the front differential cannot handle the engine torque which is why TFL’s broke and Toyota’s answer was a software detune so less torque goes to the front. Now we know the suspension does not have proper bump stops. And this is the stuff we just know at the moment. You think those are the only places they cut corners?

Just got out of a gladiator into a 1958 LC. Yes, the LC has proper bump stops. Im tall, and yes the more upright glass and tallness of LC is way better than jeeps. These LC's are built in Japan and not im mexico like the tacos. I went for the cheaper 1958 edition and will build it how I like it without the price tag of the LC LC and 1st edition. The new hybrid max motor is crazy fast and full of fun torque. Pleasant surprise.
Already have a deposit on a Trailhunter. Now that the pricing and options are released, we will finalize the details of the order. Will be keeping it a long time so will be loading it up. Our 2014 Trail has 166,000 miles on it and is due to be updated. More power, towing, better fuel economy and tech will be a great improvement.
I have to admit, both the new 4Runner and Land Cruiser look absolutely beautiful. Toyota really nailed it on these redesigns in the looks. However, I’d wait a few years to see how these new engines hold up since they’re quite a move from the old V8s.

The LC Prado and the 4runner have always been similar, being the turbo diesel option in the LC Prado the main differentiator. Now, having both competing with each other with the same engine options in the US is kind of "crazy"...
Seems like the 4Runner is more rugged and youthful design, while the LC is more understated and mature. Smart move to offer two options for different tastes.
I would take the LC250 over a 4Runner every day of the week and twice on Sunday. The 4Runner is over styled, the LC250 runs a full-time case, and the world market model makes more sense for anyone who crosses international borders.
Owner of a '20 4Runner OR w/KDSS. My issues with the new TH 4R. Compressor location unsuitable and potentially inaccessible when loaded up. Why not a more rearward placement? Load height is just a non starter. "Sliders" attached to the body as opposed to frame mounted. Toyota badging on dash a little much and some small details. Love the looks and the paint color.
$10k increase in pricing compared to the last Gen TRD Pro 4Runner is insane. I also don't like the roof basket, I'd much rather have roof rails so I can add ski racks, whatever I want. Also a bummer that the 4Runner trailhunter doesn't have a front locker too. At this price level I'm not sure why someone would choose these vs the Lexus GX550 Overtrail and get the V6 twin turbo motor
No snorkel, no compressor, not sure if those rock sliders are frame mounted (they're body mounted on the Tacoma TRD pro, frame mounted on the Trailhunter), same drivetrain. Seems like all the Landcrusier offers is more room for the price tag.
The Land Cruiser seems way bigger than the 4Runner. I like the way the 4Runner looks over the Land Cruiser, but only slightly, and that is where the points for the 4Runner stop. Everything else goes in the Land Cruiser's favor for me. Size of vehicle. Interior space. Auto 4X4 (huge miss on a Trail Hunter, Toyota!!). It seems like in an attempt to be a little more "macho", Toyota made the 4Runner interior a little too blocky and chunky, which takes up room. Not a fan of that. I just really wish you could get a Land Cruiser starting in the mid $40's, as even the most inexpensive options are close to $60K.
Chunky buttons are great but that tiny volume button on the screen is horrible. I have that in my new Tacoma wood hauler and it is the absolute worst thing about the interior. Hopefully an accessory maker will come up with an alternative..
im waiting for the 2nd wave if the new 4runners before considering buying but im still contemplating just getting a 2024 before its too late. I dont love the divot details on the back end near the lights, it almost looks like dents
Unfortunately, the Land Cruiser is AWD and requires Premium Fuel. Otherwise, I might be tempted to go that route. I am in the market for the 4runner TRD Pro . Looking forward to pricing and off-road reviews.
Pricing is unfortunate on these cars but it’s the free market at work. For everyone of us that mentions the absurd cost, someone is at the dealer in the financing dept looking at a $72k Toyota +5% interest rate saying “where do I sign”.
A fully optioned out top of the line trim level should not have any blank switches. This drives me crazy. I hope the production version of the 4Runner fixes this but the 1st Edition LC still has a blank right in the middle of the dash staring at you.
20 years ago I bought a nice new house with a big outbuilding and a smaller outbuilding plus 10 acres. I can Remember being shocked to spend $82000 for it. Now that’s dirt cheap. Wages have not kept up so whose spending this much? Wish I could! Lol

Land Cruise for me which I have already purchased. Full time 4 wheel drive, better view out front with taller window, no fake hood scoop that makes view over hood not as good and somewhat classic styling.
I really do like them, but those prices with interest rates are a non starter. Guess I’ll keep fighting my teenagers over our YJ and TJ. Had a Tacoma back in 99 fantastic truck.
Uhhh, 6’2” zero issues with rear seat leg room-one of the most comfortable back seats I’ve ever sat in, and this includes my current gen and previous gen tundra.
Sliders still look like the mount to the unibody and not the frame. :( Wheels/tires look like they might now be interchangeable between the 4runner and tacoma again.
The 4Runner should be in low $50’s max and the LC in the high $50’s. However, seeing all the build quality issues with Toyotas lately, I really question how smart it is to consider buying. Seems Toyota has leaned more towards aesthetics and less towards durability. Is TFL going to say anything about the recent suspension issues for Toyotas? Seems the engine issue and the transmission and linkage issues have been detailed.
Convince me it will live 15 years reliably. Then maybe I’ll pay the price. It’s not as easy a sell as the current 5th gen in that way (at least not yet).
It is really too bad when people say these trailhunter versions of the trucks are overpriced when to build your own rig to spec will be several thousands of dollars more plus with the inclusion of many different attributes like e parking brake a proper snorkel thats sealed and painted in stead of just cut and bolted i have a 23 orp and with what i have done my trk is 100k spent with multiple different brands I wouldve saved my money for this if It wasnt the greatest secret in the automotive worlds history year after year of speculation i waited got mine delivered then 1 year later this is what came about i wouldve gladly not modified it then traded it in after 3 years come on people there are several trims available if you think the trailhunters are too expensive and after what i have put my trk thru Toyota trks and thier prices are fine with me
All last year I was excited for both of these, and now, they feel a little tacky an underwhelming. Ended up going w/ a used 4runner for less than half the price.
I'll pass on both. Priced too high and I am sure the reasons they keep delaying the 4runner is because it's got the same transmission problems as the Tacoma.
It seems like “door card” is the more old school name for that part. The panel used to be a thin rigid “card” that was mostly flat and covered with vinyl or leather
Cool video. Hopefully you can get the Trailhunter without that ARB basket on the foof. A lot of us use Thule or Yakima roof bars for hailing skis, boxes, and boats. Those baskets are worthless for that.
Don’t get fooled with the lift kits on the new 4R, they lack a key component that Toyota watered down on the new Tacoma and 4R: NO frame mounted bump stops. They have shock mounted bunpstops with aluminum cast shock top that is straight doodoo for off-roading. This was done to save cost for North America models. Go land cruiser because it’s a world market vehicle which they put more time and attention to and they have frame mounted bump stops. Sad they did away with frame mounted bunpstops on the new gen.

Our 2014 Trail has 166,000 miles on it and is due to be updated. More power, towing, better fuel economy and tech will be a great improvement.

I have to admit, both the new 4Runner and Land Cruiser look absolutely beautiful. Toyota really nailed it on these redesigns in the looks. However, I’d wait a few years to see how these new engines hold up since they’re quite a move from the old V8s.
Agreed, they have a beautiful design with ALOT of road presence.
Still think 70k for a 4 cylinder turbo with a tiny battery pack is insane.

Depends on your age. I'm seeing most younger guys prefer 4Runner, older guys Land Cruiser. I'm an older guy.
The LC Prado and the 4runner have always been similar, being the turbo diesel option in the LC Prado the main differentiator. Now, having both competing with each other with the same engine options in the US is kind of "crazy"...
Seems like the 4Runner is more rugged and youthful design, while the LC is more understated and mature. Smart move to offer two options for different tastes.
That hybrid battery implementation was a big miss. I would have preferred the battery under the second row.

Waiting to see the range and cargo for the 4R; I’ll probably be deciding between these two in the next year or two.
I would take the LC250 over a 4Runner every day of the week and twice on Sunday. The 4Runner is over styled, the LC250 runs a full-time case, and the world market model makes more sense for anyone who crosses international borders.
Owner of a '20 4Runner OR w/KDSS. My issues with the new TH 4R. Compressor location unsuitable and potentially inaccessible when loaded up. Why not a more rearward placement? Load height is just a non starter. "Sliders" attached to the body as opposed to frame mounted. Toyota badging on dash a little much and some small details. Love the looks and the paint color.
Its not a snorkel on the 4runner though. Its a raised air intake for cleaner air when offroading.
$10k increase in pricing compared to the last Gen TRD Pro 4Runner is insane. I also don't like the roof basket, I'd much rather have roof rails so I can add ski racks, whatever I want. Also a bummer that the 4Runner trailhunter doesn't have a front locker too. At this price level I'm not sure why someone would choose these vs the Lexus GX550 Overtrail and get the V6 twin turbo motor

Hey Kase, please fold down the back seats of the Trailhunter. Is it a flat load floor? Is there 4ft between the wheel wells?
No snorkel, no compressor, not sure if those rock sliders are frame mounted (they're body mounted on the Tacoma TRD pro, frame mounted on the Trailhunter), same drivetrain. Seems like all the Landcrusier offers is more room for the price tag.
No bump stops on the 4runner?
Nope. Just like on the Tacoma resulting in possible suspension failures.
The Land Cruiser seems way bigger than the 4Runner. I like the way the 4Runner looks over the Land Cruiser, but only slightly, and that is where the points for the 4Runner stop. Everything else goes in the Land Cruiser's favor for me. Size of vehicle. Interior space. Auto 4X4 (huge miss on a Trail Hunter, Toyota!!). It seems like in an attempt to be a little more "macho", Toyota made the 4Runner interior a little too blocky and chunky, which takes up room. Not a fan of that. I just really wish you could get a Land Cruiser starting in the mid $40's, as even the most inexpensive options are close to $60K.
That trail hunter prototype had a lot of dirt underneath. Must be putting it through its paces…..or you’ll get to drive it.
Chunky buttons are great but that tiny volume button on the screen is horrible. I have that in my new Tacoma wood hauler and it is the absolute worst thing about the interior. Hopefully an accessory maker will come up with an alternative..

Based solely on Exterior styling I'm going Land Cruiser with the retro round headlights. It just looks better to me.
im waiting for the 2nd wave if the new 4runners before considering buying but im still contemplating just getting a 2024 before its too late. I dont love the divot details on the back end near the lights, it almost looks like dents

Unfortunately, the Land Cruiser is AWD and requires Premium Fuel. Otherwise, I might be tempted to go that route. I am in the market for the 4runner TRD Pro . Looking forward to pricing and off-road reviews.
Pricing is unfortunate on these cars but it’s the free market at work. For everyone of us that mentions the absurd cost, someone is at the dealer in the financing dept looking at a $72k Toyota +5% interest rate saying “where do I sign”.
A fully optioned out top of the line trim level should not have any blank switches. This drives me crazy. I hope the production version of the 4Runner fixes this but the 1st Edition LC still has a blank right in the middle of the dash staring at you.
Most definitely the Land Cruiser for the payload (what's been stated so far). It's not even close.
20 years ago I bought a nice new house with a big outbuilding and a smaller outbuilding plus 10 acres. I can Remember being shocked to spend $82000 for it. Now that’s dirt cheap. Wages have not kept up so whose spending this much? Wish I could! Lol
Find myself holding out on LC until 4Runner is out, which could be sometime. Also heard ICE will be 1st the ~4 months later will be hybrids, so Spring 2025?
Land Cruise for me which I have already purchased. Full time 4 wheel drive, better view out front with taller window, no fake hood scoop that makes view over hood not as good and somewhat classic styling.
I really do like them, but those prices with interest rates are a non starter. Guess I’ll keep fighting my teenagers over our YJ and TJ. Had a Tacoma back in 99 fantastic truck.

Uhhh, 6’2” zero issues with rear seat leg room-one of the most comfortable back seats I’ve ever sat in, and this includes my current gen and previous gen tundra.

4R Trailhunter better be cheaper since I’ve noticed a lack of the ARB steel bumper that was a major point for the Taco. Any word as to why?

5th gen 4runner here. Forget that econo 4cyl. At least i know the 5th gen is proven.
Sliders still look like the mount to the unibody and not the frame. :( Wheels/tires look like they might now be interchangeable between the 4runner and tacoma again.

The 4Runner should be in low $50’s max and the LC in the high $50’s. However, seeing all the build quality issues with Toyotas lately, I really question how smart it is to consider buying. Seems Toyota has leaned more towards aesthetics and less towards durability.
Is TFL going to say anything about the recent suspension issues for Toyotas? Seems the engine issue and the transmission and linkage issues have been detailed.
I think he missed the weight restriction on the back of the LandCruiser.
Convince me it will live 15 years reliably. Then maybe I’ll pay the price. It’s not as easy a sell as the current 5th gen in that way (at least not yet).

If I was in the market for a new vehicle, I'd go with the 1958 LC. However, I only buy used vehicles.
It is really too bad when people say these trailhunter versions of the trucks are overpriced when to build your own rig to spec will be several thousands of dollars more plus with the inclusion of many different attributes like e parking brake a proper snorkel thats sealed and painted in stead of just cut and bolted i have a 23 orp and with what i have done my trk is 100k spent with multiple different brands I wouldve saved my money for this if It wasnt the greatest secret in the automotive worlds history year after year of speculation i waited got mine delivered then 1 year later this is what came about i wouldve gladly not modified it then traded it in after 3 years come on people there are several trims available if you think the trailhunters are too expensive and after what i have put my trk thru Toyota trks and thier prices are fine with me

Why no 4 auto for the 4Runner? Even my inexpensive 2018 Silverado has 4 auto
All last year I was excited for both of these, and now, they feel a little tacky an underwhelming.
Ended up going w/ a used 4runner for less than half the price.
Neither one its way overpriced for what it is and reliability will have a huge impact over the years.

I'll pass on both. Priced too high and I am sure the reasons they keep delaying the 4runner is because it's got the same transmission problems as the Tacoma.
The only issue is robbing people on the drive train. It's not 2002 anymore. Prices for things are more now.

Cool video. Hopefully you can get the Trailhunter without that ARB basket on the foof. A lot of us use Thule or Yakima roof bars for hailing skis, boxes, and boats. Those baskets are worthless for that.
Don’t get fooled with the lift kits on the new 4R, they lack a key component that Toyota watered down on the new Tacoma and 4R: NO frame mounted bump stops. They have shock mounted bunpstops with aluminum cast shock top that is straight doodoo for off-roading. This was done to save cost for North America models.
Go land cruiser because it’s a world market vehicle which they put more time and attention to and they have frame mounted bump stops.
Sad they did away with frame mounted bunpstops on the new gen.
