There was this guy that I met a local jazz camp that played the melodica but then I saw how wonderfully John Batiste speaks about and plays the instrument! I bought one two days ago!
Performance humility is such a small price to pay to remember our roots and from where we originate, and what a glorious thing to find that when we go there it is also when we recover our soul. Thank you so much, Jon for the beauty and grace shown to us every day.
Rich, dramatic, love-filled and, let me not forget, titillating for days. If you are listening to music, but not listening to this, then your music is not really on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Me , the NO jazzz PERSON WAS PULLED IN BY eACH instrument & the SOULS involved! And then was that Cab Calloway I heard reminding me of another sweeeeeet time ! Bless u allll! Love u Jon ! ContinueeeeePlease!!!🙏🏽💕
I love that he has brought the melodica into the public eye. We who delve into this instrument don't get much in the way of respect. That's some fine harmoniboard playing Jon.
Interesting that you say that. When I payed the harmonica, the younger folks would roll their eyes. It's been my experience that relatively few Americans know about the Melodica to have a low opinion about it. Those who do know about it through JB and a smaller minority know it from Augustus Pablo. But when I pull out the Melodica and play, the feedback is 99% positive, and folks usually ask me. "What's that?" Brits and Jamaicans smile right away as they are in the know.
@@Themaddprof I'm primarily a harmonica player....my melodica efforts are quite new. I've noticed a certain snobbery towards it. There will always be those (usually guitar players who have never touched a melodica) who see both harp and melodica as toys. I love to play slow Irish airs on it...playing less like a keyboard and more like a sax or pipes. I wouldn't know a chord if it bit me, but I can make a melody sing...hahah. Also...Augustus Pablo was the man!
Every time he plays his melodica, I smile because I know a friend in the UK who plays it and I then think of this person..... Although, has to be said, nobody reaches the hights of mastering of our Jon!
I had this saved t my favorites and listening to t again I can tell why That second verse of Killing me softly is some straight fire absolutely blows the original out of the water even with no words.
Interesting, the second song they play into Killing Me Softly is Boadicea from Enyah. Funny enough, both Boadicea and Killing me softly are part of two of the Fugee's most popular songs (Boadicea is the background music to Ready or Not).
Jon Batiste is a Genius filled with love. His love transpires all humanity. I dearly love that I am joyfully happy listening to his Spirit by music. I would love to have a sit-down and listen to his Spirit of music, talking about his music - he shines like a full moon.
There are a lot of simularities between Eddie's playing style and Miguel Zenón that I haven't noticed before, from his overall tone to his vibrato and altissimo range. I wonder if Miguel has been as big of an influence for him as he has been for me.
Jon Batiste should listen to Wynton Marsalis who said the same thing about playing that crap instrument. It'll tarnish Jon Batiste's image if he continues to play the toy.
+Fred MyOpinion Its different so people will listen. People love sounds they haven't heard before its what they call the future now. And I'm pretty sure new orleans bread music that even catches one wave of popularity is guaranteed to thrive with the right financial guidance. White guy fred knows nothing about getting album sales or shows apparently.
+Fred MyOpinion Preface this by saying I'm no musician and have no authority to make the following blanket statements, but my take is that every sound is music. The musician's role is to awaken us to that music. Batiste does just that.
Wow! In my experience you are in the minority on that one. I had a Jazz/Swing/Blues band for 10 years and we would sometimes perform this with very talented female vocalist, it would gain as much positive audience response as some of our other fully arranged swingin' big band or R&B Soul pieces.
Jon Batiste is just a sublime musician ❤️
Who would thumb this down??? This is gorgeous
The first few notes and I added this to several of my lists! This man is bad!!!
So did I! #Smokin'
@@hjklegacy1283 I waited to get up from my armchair till the last notes had ended, then did the same
Refreshing to see and hear this level musicianship...Thumbs up!!

his facial expression when he plays the complex chords! What a musician. The musicians are really great too. So good together. Improv
John Baptiste is all kinds of cool
I was there on that night. So great.
Where was This?

Vibing in Dunkin Donuts while I preparing lessons for students ...omg 4:38 I'm so gone right now STOKED!
Yeah went nuts right there.

Too good Jon. Love the original, love the transition, and your rendition of Killing Me Softly. You are too awesome.
Even the tambourine is on point! Every instrument!
Melodica is so smooth and kool.
5:04 just wanted to hear him with his melodica😍😍😍
I just bought one. They are a lot of fun.

@@kikivolauvent1 If you want to hear Melodica mastery on the same level as Jon, try Augustus Pablo and Hermito Pascoal
He's AMAZING!!! I could listen forever, oh and watch also. My new favorite
That melody tango-like is so good!
Lord, its beyond good
I had this saved t my favorites and listening to t again I can tell why That second verse of Killing me softly is some straight fire absolutely blows the original out of the water even with no words.

"Killing me Softly" is an Roberta Flack original
Roberta Flack....The composer/vocalist
Well, she didn't write it, but was the first to put out a version.
Killing it!
Me gusta mucho!! Excelente música!
Buena Luis Mario. Gracias por compartir.

Thank you, Enya, for one of the melodies. 😉

It make me think to Mc coy Tiner with your own feeling. Great !

Yes
Like melodica brawo
3:40 onward is so crazy.

anybody know what kind of melodica he plays here?
tres cool music!!
Suzuki Pro37.
Made that melodica sound like a sax
Sequence/notes for this amazing part :o? 06:48
nice
What brand of Melodica is that?
Only 16 likes from S.A. and Australia? :/
shamone
That harmonica-like instrument he's playing sounds close to a toy sound.
+Fred MyOpinion Well you couldn't even play with it.

Chris Turner , keep looking in the wrong direction, colored chump or U can listen to a White guy who has money and brains.
batiste is awesome but in my opinion killing me softly is one of the worst songs ever written. even these guys can't make it sound good.

I loved it ,thank you !
Very bad!!!!
are you talking about your taste in music?
I think he meant bad as good. Like, "Bad ass!", or something along those lines.
hopefully.
