Gene was my neighbor. I piano genius. Started piano at 5. Played in a club in Benton harbor Michigan under age cause the band said he was better than their adult pianist. Studied classical music in new york. 82 airborne member. A sweeter soul i never met. Blesses to all.
Magical experience is the the best way to describe it!!! Sometimes he would play the song “Thats All” as his final song of the night. I distinctly remember thinking I didn’t want the night to end.
This is traditionally what a jazz listeners would've anticipated hearing during the time period, soulfully straight ahead. If only one would allow himself to openness, true appreciation of the art is made available .
Just amonth ago I found his " Ballades" CD in a thrift store. Never herd of him I thot so I got it. Well I'm listening to this CD 3-4 times a week! Every song a profound gem. A piano genius since he tosses in riffs u don't expect.
PODEMOS ACRESCENTAR QUE O PIANO DE HARRIS, É PROFUNDAMENTE VISCERAL. CADA NOTA VEM DAS ENTRANHAS DO SEU SER... APESAR DE TUDO. EXISTE UMA LEVEZA QUE ENCANTA !!!
Blue as Junior Mance, swinging as Basie, technical peer of Oscar, not abstruse as Phineas or Tatum, but rhythmically, harmonically, melodic-wise, the leading exponent of piano trio jazz. Such that Ray Brown, first-call bassist on both coasts, offered and actually did play sideman to Harris. Resulting in some of the most inspired readings of standards in catalogue today. The Herb Ellis quartet recordings are worth citing as aural treasures.
OSCAR WITH DIRT UNDER HIS FINGERNAILS! NO FANNIES IN THOSE SEATS. SIMPLY THE BEST. I JUST WATCHED A VIDEO ABOUT TATUM AND NEWBORN, JR. THEY PLAYED WITH EXTRAORDINARY SKILL, LIKE OSCAR, BUT THE PASSION IS MISSING. JAZZ IS ALL ABOUT PASSION, AND GENE RULES THAT ROOST! HE MAKES YOU WANT TO JUMP UP, RAISE YOUR ARMS AND SCREAM.
Thanks for sharing, but what happened to: This masquerade? the theme starts at 4:46 and disappears at 5:35! what a pity, this is one of the most beautiful interpretation of Gene Harris
I've been looking for a live recording (Video) of Gene playing Black and Blue! The beginning is cut off - would anyone know where I could see the whole performance of that song? Thank you.

Saw Gene in the early '70s here in Detroit. Expecting a classic 3 Sounds GH, we left feeling disappointed that he had 'sold out,' playing funky pop in a leather 'hippie' hat, accompanied by a couple of fringed buckskin singers. I guess sometimes, even the greatest have to compromise to pay the bills. So refreshing that he eventually got back to his roots.

It's a crying shame that the audience appears to consist mainly of the elderly. Young people don't patronize or support this type of quality musicianship. I suppose Miles Davis figured that out and got into rock and roll??

I would like to have had that neighbour too.
One of the greatest to ever do it. His soul and feel is nearly unmatched.
Gene Harris played with so much love, affection, and soulfulness that hearing him was always a magical experience.
He was giant influence on me. Being from South Carolina back in the 40s and 50s there hardly any live jazz to hear.
Magical experience is the the best way to describe it!!! Sometimes he would play the song “Thats All” as his final song of the night. I distinctly remember thinking I didn’t want the night to end.
One of my absolute piano heroes 🎹❤️👏
Omg jazz Sunday morning. Sweet Jesus saving my soul. Gene cannot be contained. There is enough for everyone at the feast of music he brings.
Piano with bluesfeeling and soul, that´s Gene. Only Ray and Gene can do it in that way!
Stunning! What miracle these Guys made for all the world to see!
In 2009 I got to play a gig with a sax player who worked with Gene Harris. Benny Poole. Fun time.
This is traditionally what a jazz listeners would've anticipated hearing during the time period, soulfully straight ahead. If only one would allow himself to openness, true appreciation of the art is made available .
Thanks for posting Gene was a great player
Just fine musicians giving their very best. Gene is to the most underrated piano player I can think of, along with Johnny Costa.
Could not agree more! Gene and Johnny are absolute masters.
@@travisanderson8102 And you're following in their footsteps ! Brilliant trio, absolutely wonderful. I enjoyed your two videos. 👍
The tempos they have chosen have been extremely well considered.
Paul Humphrey, Luther Hughes and Ron Eschete. A List players all!!

Speaking of Basie, are you familiar with the Gene Harris All Star Big Band's "Tribute To Count Basie?"
Well said Michael!
So beautiful ❤️

Gene's interpretation of Hymn To Freedom still gives me goosebumps like no other.
The late, and truly geat jazz radio host Bob Parlocha named Gene The Groovemaster.

Young cats are sleeping if they don’t check Gene out.
Gene needed more fast runs. Left in the dust by Oscar.
Really? Only a fanboy lacking any perception of soul or music appreciation could denigrate music as some type of competition.
@@larrysmac Go read Oscar Petersons autobiography, he explains it all there in great detail.
