guys, he won an Oscar for best original score for Pixar's 'Soul' along with Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor, AND the protagonists' piano playing was modelled after him!!
I love how Jon is a brilliant musician with perfect pitch letting us know the frequency of specific notes, but he's simultaneously a little kid just enjoying cool toys even if they aren't perfect for a high level musician.
Just a little tidbit of info. When he mentioned the 440hz he was referring to what A is tuned to, which you then base the tuning of the rest of the instrument off of, not specifically the frequency of the note he was talking about.
I love how excited and enthusiastic he is no matter what, like a true crazed artist you can practically see his brain cycling with experimentation and possibilities even when the gadgets are trash. I’d love to see a follow up video of him making an actual song with these.
Jon Batiste is the BEST. Glad this is devoted to not only his musicianship but also his charming personality. We don't always get to see an artist's personality while they make music but his shines bright.
This dude’s pitch and rhythm are just insane. The fact that he can tell the difference between a real E and the out of tune E on the stylophone is just amazing. What a guy!
I mean, his own pitch wavers significantly, and he's also just straight up wrong. The stylophone literally can not be out of pitch, it is nearly a complete impossibility.
It takes a special kind of heart to be able to see something redeeming in garbage instruments and then love them for it. That's what I love about Jon Batiste! Also, his mad genius vibe with anything music.
if only every music teachers are like Jon Batiste, he’s got so much passion about music and listening him speaking about the music aspect just seem so easy to understand
I’ve been learning chromatic harmonica for the past year. As someone coming back to music, learning this instrument has been really exciting for me. However, the more I practice and my ear improved, the more I realized how niche the instrument is. Out of any instrument, it was it’s flaws that encouraged me to learn more about music theory. My brother who is a long time trumpet player makes fun of me for not playing a real instrument, but when I ask him about topics like 12 tone equal temperament, perfect 5ths, etc. he has no idea what I’m talking about. Seeing how this man gets excited over flawed instruments really inspires me in a time when I had been feeling really down about my interests.
I screamed with laughter multiple times with this one (sorry not sorry, neighbors). I enjoy Jon's energy and enthusiasm for music! I would LOVE to geek out about music and complain about the curse of perfect pitch with him one day.
Jon is such a positive guy that even the most garbage of the instruments got 3 stars. That acoustic effects box is insane tho. Mad respect to the engineers.
Jon: “This xylophone is just a human rib cage, and none of the notes are close to correct, but you can tell they put themselves into this instrument. 5 stars!”
Seeing a professional musician play with musicial gadgets and having the absolute time of their life is so interesting to me. Sometimes, professional musicians can lose the joy they found in music; however with Jon Batiste, this is not the case. You can tell that he really enjoys making music and making it inclusive to every single person. I love his vibe!
I can relate to this review. As an audio engineer and sound designer I would love finding quirky things like this to add some uniqueness to a recording. It really allows your inner creative to come out and you start to think outside the box which results in something truly unique you can be proud of. Used to teach audio production and would always tell my students to find unique pieces and use them in ways they were not meant to be used and you’ll be surprised at how creative and fun it can be. Love seeing content like this!
his energy is so infectious, im a bit similar to him when it comes to music (i often get told i make weirdly exaggerated expressions when i hear something really good), but this dude is on another level, props

Just bought a Melodica/mouth organ, for $20 on Amazon. Talk about cheep thrills. Been wanting one for a while, but seeing John, having so much fun, put me over the top :-) Happy trails, all....
This video made me love Jon, though I already liked him before this. Great to see his personality beyond a band leader responding to a host. Just seeing him enjoy the exploration of music with musical gadgets, as simple as that is, is something we should be seeing all sorts of artist's do. Wired should get all sorts of musicians doing this, either separately or together. Can you imagine a jam session with creators trying these things out? It should be a series.
He is the epitome of "don't yuck someone's yum" he is in love with everything for being what it is and nothing more; what a wholesome human being.

He studied at Julliard, is classically trained, has prefect pitch...and is a BEAST at jazz...G.O.A.T.

His energy is impeccable.
He is the band leader on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert. His band is called Stay Human.
He has 11 grammy nominations this year
Yes, 11. The most any single musician has ever been nominated for at the same time.
I replayed that part 5 times to hear him say "Oh my goodness to the souls of my feet I am blessed". Stunning.
He also did the music for the movie Soul. Won the Oscar.
“Unreliable, inconsistent, and out-of-tune. Five stars” Jon would love my brain 😍

It was disgusting, abominable, and a complete waste of time. But that's what makes it different. 5 stars.

How much should he be enjoying himself?
I've heard him play for years, had no idea this is what he was like. What a genuinely zany and happy dude. Hugely appreciative of the energy.
I'm inspired to bring this energy to my students.
This is more of a universal acid test to Jon Batiste's character and spirit as opposed to a review of gadgets. Jon's a humanity gem.
What is so encouraging about this video is that I feel like Jon would rate me 5 stars as a human, not because of me but because of his spirit.
