The 28mm vs 35mm Shootout Challenge

  • Recently, I made a video of culling out various bits of camera and photography gear (You can find it here: • Gear Essentialism Cu... ).
One of the things I mentioned in that video is that I would gladly purchase the RF 28mm pancake lens to finalize my gear. And, on the occasion of my 65th birthday, I did just that.
And while this is NOT a lens review video, I did want to show why I prefer the 28mm over the 35mm or even the 50mm for street/urban style photography.
Let's take it out for a spin, shall we?

    Happy birthday Tim…
    I remember my 65th, closing in on 68 in a few days…
That’s an interesting bit of info about the iPhone lens…
    I have a 16-35 that I don’t utilize as much as I should. 24-70 is usually mounted…
Bought myself an 8-15 fisheye earlier this year. I can get ridiculously close at 8mm which results in a full circle image. If I switch to 15 mm the resulting image is rectangular but wide angled…
Got to love B&H for anything photography related.

The 28mm looks like a winner! I love the idea of attaching the pocket 2 to your camera bag strap!!

That’s the 2nd time I’ve tried it. I don’t think it’s as natural as a GoPro on the center of your chest, but I need to practice a lot more! :)

It's a real amazing lens..... very simple and the Image quality compares to L glass .......

    Happy birthday!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
As for the 28/35 comparison I agree on the 28mm being more versatile. I have a 35mm and rarely shoot with it. The 28mm goes out A LOT more often… nice to see the direct comparison too. 👍📸

I like the 28mm focal length it's great for getting more in the frame. The only downside is you have to watch the edge of the frame more for distortion on straight lines. I just got a 35mm lens 6 months ago and I must say I like it too. I have to work more for the capture. It's hard to say which focal length is better they both work great for me.

28 mm provides much more fun for street photography. Small, light, with nice image quality at f/4. It allows to capture much more of street scene and adds more air to picture.
With r8 its unnoticeble and people dont even notice photographer who use that duo.

I just had to decide between these two lenses and the smaller size/weight of the 28 won me over. It’s a great walk around lens. It’s 200g lighter than the 35. Plus I like the wider perspective.

the only downside of this 28mm, is that it got only 2.8 aperture :< , if it was with 1.8 it would be the perfect rf lens i swear.

The pancake size is what forces it to be f2.8 I’m pretty sure, there would need to be more glass and that would make it more of a scone lens instead of a pancake lens (the 35mm f1.8 is a scone lens (I just came up with that haha))

    • @jayog4576
      @jayog4576 6 месяцев назад +2

It's a wide angle lens so in reality you'd use it for mostly street and landscape or architectural shots. So the wide shots won't need the small apertures like f/2 and below. The 2.8 is perfect actually.

Thanks for the video, Tim. I've really fallen in love with the 28mm prime. Canon did themselves a favor with the RF 28mm 2.8🎯💯

Large megapixel cameras have the advantage of being able to crop with good results. Unless one really blows up a print to be viewed at close range, 10 Megapixel is plenty good. With a 20 MegaPixel camera, that means you can crop out half the pic if desired. One can crop down a 28mm pic, but can not expand a 35mm pic. So in post processing it is very easy to make a 28mm pic so that it has the focal length of a 35, but you can not go the other way around.

Good stuff Tim! Thanks for sharing some 28mm content, not a ton out there. Over the years I’ve come to really appreciate 28, 35, and 50 for their respective strengths and styles. We definitely could use more modern 28mm lenses though…severe lack of 1.8’s and 1.4’s 😥

Awesome video!!! Happy Belated Birthday BTW. Nothing better then a photographer buying himself a photography gift!! I do it all the time. Yes loving the 28mm focal length for street and travel photography. It's just perfect. I also just purchased the rf 28mm f2.8 and I am contemplating taking this on a trip to Mexico City I am taking in a few days or taking my zoom rf 28-70 f2.0 L series lens. IDK!!! haha Size and weight vs L quality Big size and Big weight!!.. Honestly size and weight isn't a big issue for me so I think I just answered my own question.. maybe..??

I use RF 50mm f/1.2 for my walks, and stack frames if I need more coverage (merge them as a panorama in Lightroom), you just need to make sure your metering, focus, white balance, and ISO are the same in all frames. This is usually, when there is no room for me to take more steps backwards.
A few days ago, I received my RF 28mm f/2.8 pancake lens that I now carry in the same walking bag, but didn't take out for a walk yet. I might take it out tonight because of your video.
Thank you, and a belated happy birthday.

I haven't been on your channel before, but I've been thinking about those 2 lenses so I clicked on this video. Your shots are excellent and now I want to visit downtown Chattanooga. The video is well done, too. I was sceptical that the DJI cam was going to work for on-location behind-the-camera video, but it came out looking great.
Right now I have the RF15-35mm f/2.8 but it's super bulky for street work like this. Anyway, thank you for posting this.
