its a FF lens so what you see with the enhancements controls turned off, its the real deal. from the raw files, not a jpeg.

This lens makes a lot of sense on APS-C. And while I agree APS-C lenses are preferred, with this tiny amount of glass it really doesn't matter. I think producing an APS-C specific version would only raise the cost because the sales are too low to offset the cheaper lens design.

    • @StrangelyIronic
      @StrangelyIronic Год назад +3

You can't really make the argument of preferring APS-C native lenses on Canon with how they treat their users with the locked mount. It's either buy a slow-ish zoom, or deal with something like this, losing your weather sealing benefit if you're on something like the R7, and suck it up. TBH, this on the recent bare bones R100, or higher spec R50, would be interesting as a Canon R budget walk around setup (if you have to have Canon) since there's nothing like the M6(II) or M200.

I'm looking to buy into the R8 tonight, as an upgrade from my Fujifilm, since the size and weight difference is negligible with a X-H2 or X-T5. I'm glad that Canon are making these compact high aperture primes. I'd love a 40f2 pancake also. Like the Nikon Z L. So long as they're performing as well as my f2 XF glass there are no negatives for me. 😊

  • @JGZphotography

I once had the Canon EF 40 mm 2.8 pancake, then sold it to get the RF 24mm 1.8, which I love. While it's not a pancake, it's compact enough for general photography, especially in low light or the need for more bokeh. I often take exception to the focus quality on the corners when lenes are wide-open. Well, who takes pictures of subjects right on the lens corners of the viewfinder??? It's the center area that focuses best. Or stop way down the lens if doing landscape on a tripod. Often the images on corners are out of the depth of field range, so who cares? Canon RF 28mm f/2.8 STM is a good choice for general street and hobby photography. Canon offers professional RF "red-ring" grade lenses (pricey) for the real McCoy quality shooting and sharper corners.

28mm for portraits.. is rather odd. For a group shot maybe, on crop you're not going to get separation, on full frame it's just so bloody wide.. distortion is pretty much mandatory and you really have to control / keep your angle of view flat (vertically) more or less.

Intersting that there is no mention of the distortion. I have shot ALOT of 28mm lenses on Leica M and these often need very little correction in post. But just like on the Leica Q series, this lens is actually a little wider than 28mm and has quite alot of distortion. Straight lines become bowed/concave. If you turn off lens correction in LR/C1 you will see this. The issue with this is that it makes the images look like they were shot more of a wide angle than 28mm usually is considered. This is an issue if you place anything near the edge. An arm or a face or anything will look very wide. If you turn corrections off, you will see that it is not cause by the lens, but by correction the image very much. To me it was a deal-breaker and i sold the lens again right away. The size and IQ is fine, but the final image suffered to much from the distortion.

This is the info that doesn't get focused on enough, imho. Lenses usually have an issue or two, but when its as blatant as this lens...it should be explicitly and clearly communicated to prospective customers.
There hasn't been enough conversation about canon especially designing lenses with obvious flaws, and DEPENDING on software correction to make up the difference.
They are already saving a ton of money with plastic optics, no hoods included, and slow lenses...not enough folks are talking about it.

Oh, well, I just received mine, going off the reviews I found with full frame bodies, so, now to go out for a test run. I know it had some issues that can be corrected in post processing, so, I hope I didn't waste my money. UPDATE: It was not a waste of money for landscapes. The R10 handled it well and ON1 2024 did its job. The only thing I don't like about the lens is that the lens cap turns freely, so, either I have a faulty lens or it is a design flaw.

Rf 28mm can take group photos properly? To use for family functions? I have 18-45 kit lens and the pics are below par with the EOS r50.

Until Canon actually allows third party on the RF mount, this is the best RF lens for their current APS-C cameras. As a former M50 owner, I don't know if it's as incredible as the M 22mm. But it has to be close if not the same, right?

Its not as good as the 22f2. The 22 is not super sharp wide open, but the color and Boca definitely is better than this.
That said I have plenty of images at f2 that are still nice and sharp! One of the best little banger lens on the market.

  • @orangeofmars2835

Nice lens but if Canon allowed Sigma and Tamron into the RF mount they could make these type of entry level lenses much better at the same price. Canon makes great L lenses but most of their non-L lenses are sort of suspect. But then again, for $300 it is useable. But then again, Sigma could do it with excellent sharpness at f2.8 for the same price.

Canon’s affordable primes are weirdly great sleeper hits. Paper specs seem meh compared to other brand offerings. But damn are they affordable and are they good for the price. Plus a PD sling fits my Canon R5, 35mm and 50mm without skipping a beat - on another system before I’d be forced to pick one body and one of those focal lengths.

@@jorgepinogarciadelasbayonas There's too much Nikon saltiness in your comment, boy. Curb that. Nobody said the RF lenses vastly outperformed the EF versions -- even though they do outperform them, even if slightly. But they are smaller, affordable, and they fit into my bag with the smaller mirrorless bodies. Unlucky for you, I have experience shooting on Nikon as well, and unlucky for you I know that I wouldn't want to or be able to lug more than 1 body and 1 Z lens in my bag. Maybe open your eyes to wider possibilities rather than camping out at one side. Being objective is possible, yknow? PS, your photos look like overproduced crap. Hang back on the sharpness slider, maybe?

@@michelecintramika8482 Build quality? Image quality? Sharpness? What quality are you talking about? I've used both lenses, and I've owned the Z 50mm f1.8. It was by far my favourite Z lens (I also owned the 35mm, and owned but sold the 85mm). It was definitely built well. I loved the weather sealing (walked through London in the rain and it did not flinch - I did). It produced excellent images. But it is not an f1.2 lens.
Also note that Nikon slapped its S line moniker onto the Z 50mm f1.8. It is a professional lens. It is also professionally priced (albeit cheaper because I buy all my lenses 2nd hand).

I mean image quality. however, also in sharpness and build quality. Nikon offers all of this for a much cheaper price than Canon. I am Canon user. But Nikon delivers much better quality for a much lower price than Canon. At Canon RF, you either have very expensive and excellent equipment or medium-priced equipment of dubious quality. A Nikon Z6 Mark II + Z 50mm f/1.8 can only match the Canon R6 Mark II + RF 50mm f/1.2 in terms of quality. But at very different prices. Canon does not give quality options with an intermediate price. If you want quality at Canon, you have to pay a LOT of money. I just didn't leave Canon because I already have an EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III USM + EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM. They are lenses that I can put on any fullframe or aps-c camera from any company using an adapter that will give me fantastic files. So I don't need to invest in quality RF lenses. But if I ever decide to use a Canon with native lenses, I'll leave Canon and go to Nikon. Today, if someone wants photographic quality on Canon and doesn't want to use an adapter, you have to be rich.
