This lens is the future: computational photography meets materials science. Really impressive how Canon pulled off the seamless integration of digital profiles with plastic lenses whose geometry just isn't possible with traditionally ground glass, and shoved the whole thing in a pancake, really makes me really excited for what comes next (a 24mm f/1.2 that weighs 200g?)
I literally picked it up on a whim (while driving to the airport) and it never left my camera the whole trip. Totally loving 28mm.
Recently bought this lens along with a Canon R50 instead of the mediocre kit lens - what a great combination they make - superb sharpness from wide open - makes an extremely light travel combo that gives excellent results 😊😊
It’s a great lens I’ve bought it over a month ago and I absolutely love it’s optical performance. It pairs so well with my RP.
The 28mm is a bit wide for me, and I find it somewhat hard to frame with it. But I’m learning…
It’s odd how little this lens is being talked about. I would love to see Canon bring out another 40mm pancake in the future, too. I took my 28mm to an event and ended up shooting an entire session of event coverage photos with it. I was in shock with how well it worked and how light it kept everything as I walked around. Great lens to just toss into the backpack when traveling so I have a lightweight option and not a massive, expensive L-series lens.
I love my EF 40mm pancake as well, and do wish they'd do a fast-ish 40mm (maybe f/2 like the 22mm for EF-M) pancake for the RF mount.
The problem with a 40mm RF pancake lens is the short flange distance of the mount. A small pancake lens is only really possible if the focal length is similar to the flange distance of the mount. EF had a flange distance of 44mm, while RF has a flange distance of 20mm. So it's very unlikely that we'll get a true pancake lens with a longer focal length than the 28mm that we have.
I was able to get the White pancake 40mm and love it! Great for the price
@@timotheus34 That's not true; you're repeating a very, very incorrect theory dreamt up by youtubers and reddit users who don't know history, let alone lens design. Many systems have had pancake lenses which are entirely different focal lengths to the flange distance; Canon obviously had both 24mm and 40mm which worked on EF-S mount, and even back in the 1960s they had a 19mm pancake lens on the R and FL mount (that's original R, obviously, not the modern RF), and that mount had a flange of 42mm. Fuji X has a flange of 17.7mm, yet they have a 27mm (40mm equivalent0 pancake. m4/3 systems have a flange of 19.25mm, yet have access to pancakes between 14mm and 25mm; and that's only counting autofocus lenses and not including all the manual lenses, where the range of pancake lenses expands to 9-42mm.
The idea that pancake lenses need to be near in focal length to the flange distance is absolute nonsense, and even just in the example of this lens, the fact you have a 28mm focal length on a 20mm flange should have tipped you off that flange distance has nothing to do with focal lengths available to pancake designs.
What _actually_ dictates pancake focal lengths is the simple fact that the further you stray outside of the 28-50mm range, the larger optics have to be, and the same goes for aperture. There's just no cheating physics, and fitting a 28mm f/2.8 optic into this kind of size is simply a lot easier than fitting, for example, 50mm f/2.8 or 20mm f/1.4. Now there's no mirror and the rear elements can extend further into the body, the range of possible pancake designs has increased, but you still have the problem of balancing cramming everything in vs optical quality vs price.
It's not that other focal lengths and aperture combinations aren't "possible", just that it's very hard to convince people to pay enough to make those designs _profitable_ , especially if people will throw a hissy fit if the corners aren't pin-sharp wide-open.
@@timotheus34 really not sure where you got this information from, but it's historically incorrect. There is a comment bellow citing many examples of pancake lenses at various focal lengths. There are currently many full frame pancake lenses available for mirrorless cameras in the 24-40mm range as well. So it's not impossible.
“One of the best little pancake lenses pancakes have ever ‘cooked up’” 😂🎉 nice one Chris ;)
I love the 28mm focal length as a walk-round companion for a 50-something so this is a welcome addition to my wish list, along with the desire to see Canon produce a mid-50s f1.4 lens between the budget 1.8 and the enormous 1.2… well, one can dream!
So glad i ordered this lens!! It's sharp, light and gives me just what i need at many of the events i've been working.
This has become one of my favorites to use on my little R8...it's the perfect size for that camera.
Wow! I just bought this len today. Very tiny and light weight good to make my rp very compact for carry.
Got this a couple weeks ago for street walk around environmental/landscape photography on my RP and R10. It’s fun, compact and lightweight. Don’t find it soft or not worried with the distortion as that’s fixed with in camera settings. It does suffer from focus breathing though, especially in low light…at least mine does.
> "It does suffer from focus breathing though, especially in low light"
Focus breathing has nothing to do with whether there is a lot or little light. It's an effect where the focal length changes when you refocus and is completely independent of exposure. You can see it in the video - as Christopher refocuses, the image zooms in and out (despite this being a prime lens).
It sounds like maybe what you are talking about is _hunting_ , where the lens changes focus frequently trying to "lock on" to a subject, and therefore the focus elements move in and out. That often happens in low light as the AF system has to work harder to find focus. That isn't focus breathing, that's just the lens refocusing. It just happens that since this lens does have focus breathing, _when_ it hunts it _also_ focus breathes. But that's a side note.
A lens can physically change shape (focal elements move in and out) without focus breathing (lens changes focal length and therefore image zoom changes). Or, a lens can focus breathe (image zooms in and out with refocusing) without the lens externally lengthening or shortening (usually because the lens has an internally-focusing design). One is about the _image_, the other is about the _mechanics_. They are orthogonal.
I love my EF-S 24mm pancake lens so when I decide to upgrade to mirrorless, this will on my shopping list.
I own R10. I need a fast prime like Canon had for EF-M (22m f2). We need a fast prime and an overall zoom lens for travel and vlog which could be 15-70 or 15-85 mm f2.8-4.
The review I was most waiting for!
Outstanding and informative review. Great little lens. If you use it on a full frame you can go from 28 to 45 mm "cropped " all @ 2.8 and its a pancake. Strong buy!
Now, Canon should bring a M6-sized camera to the R system, to really make sense of a pancake lens.
m6 has a very sharp 22mm f2.0
Or an M6iii or M7 with more pancake primes like the excellent efm 22mm f2
Canon‘s M system is dead.
@@exkeks that’s too bad. They should revive the M series to compete with the Sony a6xxx series cameras. The M6ii is still one of the best cameras Canon has made. The image quality and compact form factor is unrivaled by any of their other cameras.
@@exkeks dont care it's dead or not as long as i still can use ef glasses and M mount glasses and make beautiful pics, i dont effing care 🤓
I still use my 28mm EF and love that lens. Has so much character
Yay! Honestly love the compact little RF lenses.
I miss the days when great pancake lenses could be had for $125 or so…
China has taken that market over
When a small home didn't cost a million?
You can miss it because people were better people, but lens are more expensive becauese they are better, have electronics and AF and IS, and we average earnings are much higher
@@pawebaran3601 No they are more expensive because they are simply overpriced due to monopoly. Not to mention the debt-driven economy which is about to collapse.
@@CZOVAnd because they wasted money by developing the RF mount. The EF mount was perfectly capable, just removing the mirror with EVF would've done the trick.
This is going to fit finely with the EOS RP. Fantastic!
Another awesome and honest review from you CF. Before i purchase any canon RF lens I wait for your review. I will be adding this lens to my kit. Looking forward to reviews of 3rd party lenses when Canon allows them. I think that is the only thing holding them back from taking top spot from Sony.
I've mostly been acquiring vintage lenses this past year or so, but this little guy seems like a perfect thing to put on my camera for a walk around town or the desert. I imagine it'd pair nicely with the R50 for super lightweight camera enjoyment.
I've got it with my R50.... It's quite a fun combo
Oh my Goodness! That bookself is amazing!
Staggering performance from a inexpensive pancake lens. In many ways this is one of the best full frame 28mm lenses ever made.
In many ways? Come on now.
@@livejames9374 No, they're right. Full frame 28mm lenses are rarely very good, unless you jump up to something really big like the Sigma Art. 28mm is my favourite focal length, but for the last ~40 years manufacturers have largely ignored it. The second-best 28 (after the Sigma) since the introduction of autofocus has been the Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 IS which came out in 2012, but even that has optics which are totally unremarkable by the standards of any 24mm or 35mm lens, fairly slow and jittery focus, and it's twice the size of this despite being the same focal length and aperture. 28mm is a perfect focal length to get the most out of IBIS, so removing IS from the lens isn't a noticeable sacrifice... all-in-all, this is an unusually good lens by 28mm standards. The focus breathing is the only downside which isn't totally negligible; I _wish_ other 28s could be criticised so lightly.
Thank you! This review really helped me to make the decision for my R7
I pair this lens with my R5 and it is really fantastic! Pleasantly surprised with this one!
Nice to sneak in some Peter Kreeft. Thanks for another great RF review!
Wow...I was just going through your videos last night for a review of this lens and here you are.
Thank you very much my friend for a great review...
Following your glowing review I did buy this 28mm f/2.8 pancake. I haven't yet done the painful resolution test, but the first portraits I made at f/3.5 and f/4 show great detail and nice soft bokeh. On the R7 it is a lovely light package. Great!! I'll be using it for street and portrait. And who knows for what more. Fabulous performance at this price point.
28mm is amazing for many shots. A good quality f/1.8 28mm RF lens wound be nice. I would swap my old EF 35 with it any day. If and when it comes.
Nice compliment to the RF 50mm f1.8 for a light system. Hopefully the next RP body will include in-body stabilization.
The R8 is pretty much the spiritual successor to the RP, and it’s an R6 II without ibis
I think we thought size was going to be the strongest selling point of the R Mount, but as we're seeing it's not the case. I would love to see Canon extremely miniaturize an APS-C camera with IBIS with no viewfinder or flash for pancake lenses like this one. I think the top thing on my wish list would be a tiny camera and lens that fits in the palm of my hand with a writs strap with really good image quality. I just don't want to carry a 5D or an R5 with a 24-105mmm 95% of the time anymore.
I was saving money for the 35mm 1.8 but maybe i choose this one, i like the size, on my RP it will be very handably ( i guess that isn't correct English, but you know what i mean)
Really specific, but I’d love do see a shootout between this and the Canon 40mm 2.8 Pancake with a Speedbooster on your R7. That’s the setup I’m currently using, and I’m very curious as to whether the 40mm holds up vs this lens when adapted that way. I’d also love to see your take on using a speedbooster on these super high MP crop sensor bodies in general! Great video as per usual!
40 is no longer a pancake once booster is used.
That's an interesting idea! I no longer have my speed booster though
I run this setup with my R50... Highly recommended despite increase in flaring
@@christopherfrost ah darn! Maybe a speedbooster comparison between Metabones, Viltrox, and Canon could happen someday then!
To my eyes, based on your reviews. The Nikon pancake looks noticeably sharper in the center wide-open. In the corners, the Nikon seems to be a bit softer, but the Canon has noticeable CA that isn’t present with the Nikon. I’d say both look particularly poor in the corners.
Regardless, both lenses look like they do the job adequately and it’s not like they’ll be cross shopped as they’re on different systems.
I pair it with 50mm f1.8 and lately with the RF 35 f1.8. I know 28 and 35 are really close FL but I think these are very different lens with different use
a 40MM lens would be a perfect option for me.
That hedgehog was sooooo cute!
Been waiting for this one. Thanks!
It looks really good, only 1 problem what I can see is low contrast. Bokeh is smooth, but still focused object isn't separated from background because of low contrast. Anyway where is the point to buy this lens vs even EF lenses 24-70 f2.8 (where there is a lot of them to pick)? Only advantage of this lens vs EFs 24-70 is weight. Is it enough to pick RF 28 instead of 24-70? For me not.
The point is that this is a tiny pancake lens for 300$ vs. a 2000$ zoom lens. It is small, light, and sharp. What's not to like?
Tnx Chris. If I pause your video at min 2:57 f/2.8 and min 3:14 f/16 both show the ends and it is pretty similar -I cannot tell how much of this is due to utube compression but I'm watching this at max res on a 27 inch monitor - so pls correct me ig you think I'm wrong. Assuming I'm correct, this is a bonus if one wants more DoF, so I wonder how f/16 looks like in the centre. Is it as bad as the ends or does it look like the centre at f/2.8?
Hi Chris, I’m curious about your lens testing chart, no doubt a DIY. Can you tell me about it?
Great Quality at it's Price 💯
very impressive this 28mm RF pancake
FUJINON GF 110mm F2 R LM WR: Please test this lens also (on GFX 50S or GFX 100, the former to keep comparison fair with Sony, Nikon and Canon's 42-45 MP resolutions).
Thank you!
looks nice... seen reports of it being soft wide open ...maybe sample variation
Suggestion please next content revisit the sigma 50-100 with your canon R7.
I appreciate your honest and thorough reviews. I noticed a Christian book in this video, as well as a portion of the Greek New Testament. May I assume that you are a Chrisitan?
Sure :-)
I wish they had this earlier,. I would have bought it instead of the 35mm.
This is the only true pancake lens we have for full frame mirrorless camera. Canon really doing some r&d unlike some 4 letter camera brand *cough*
Another great review thanks!
What's with the high price in the UK?
Please make a review of the new voigtlander nokton aspherical 35mm f0.9 for fuji x mount. Thank you!
One review that I really value!
This in my pocket and 50mm on my camera and I'm good for streets. Love this as a companion to all my tele lenses.
I'm torn between between this and the 24mm f/1.8, which I have rented and loved for nightlife. I have the 35mm and the 16, but they are just too narrow and too wide, respectively, for shooting clubs. The 24 was perfect, and I wonder if the 28 would work fine as well.
I'm in a very similar situation. I wanted the 24mm. Especially for doing video work but if the 28mm is cheaper I think I would get it. For the price and performance it seems a good deal. The 16mm is too wide. 35mm is just almost too small.
@@ElevenAce So guys, what do you get, 24 1.8 or 28 2.8 ? I have same problem too, deciding what to get..
@@ElevenAce If you are doing video work....why not get RF 16mm and turn on all the digital IS so it will crop to 24mm equiv. view. And the RF 28mm with the croping digital IS will be around 33~40mm
Debating on picking up rf 28 or the rf24 for my R50. I plan to shoot street/travel photos. Any recommendations?
The mighty Broadstairs!
Anyone knows the name of the track that starts playnd at 07:12 ?
is this going to be tight to use with r50 for indoor events?
Would you recommend this lens on a R7 over the 24mm or 35mm f1.8 RF lenses ?
Waiting for Viltrox 28mm F1.8 review :D
What is the hole on the front of the lens?
I think thats the glass
I am debating between this RF 28mm lens vs RF 24mm F1.8 micro brother. Chris which lens would you pick ?
What do you want to do with the lens?, and what's your camera?, and what's your needs?, sorry for these questions, I asked these questions to help you to choose the right lens, I'm sorry if that bothered you.
Even my 24 105 make a weird noise. Why? My macro rf 100 mm 2.8 L doesn t make any noise ^^
Hello can you give me advise what filter I need buy for this lens 28 2,8 rp .
Legend! Thank you!!
How much would weather seal gasket cost 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️ it should be the next standard norm
Hi chris , how close is it quality wise to the EF-M 22mm?
The 28mm is even better
Why must you tempt me with Canon Wide-Angle Lenses?
I bought this lens and now i'm a bit sad about the 35 STM Lens becaus I like the 28 mutch more. 🤷♂️
Hey 👋🏻 I have the RF35mm and wondered about your comment, in what ways is the 28mm better? I might sell my RF35mm to get one…
@@wolfiemedia the 28 is smaller, lighter and has afurther focal length. I have more fun with it in the city. But the quality from the 35 is better.
@@Iron_Acker ok thanks! Oh, did you miss the IS in the 35mm? 28mm doesn’t have this, right?
@@wolfiemedia my R6II has an IBIS, therefore the IS isn't so important for me. But the RF 35mm 1.8 IS Macro STM has IS, the 28 not. With the "macro" function the 35 is more versatile. But the minimum distance from 0,23m at the 28 is quite OK. Also the open aperture from 2.8 against 1.8 is different. But 2.8 is enough for me for a city trip.
@@Iron_Acker thank you 🙏🏻 (I only have the R50, so no IS).
meh. I would prefer a more pocketable eos m camera with the 22mmf2 if im going the pancake prime mirrorless route.
cracking lenses the 22f2..but i left the M when it became apparent that there would be no M5mkii..but very happy with the R6 .. the R50 is hardly any bigger than the M5...but i do miss the 11-22
I have the m6mk2. its great. The only thing I dont love is the small buffer (oh and the viewfinder taking up the hotshoe.) Ive used the R6 a fair bit for work, its great. But unless I need to shoot action, (I never do really) Ill stick with the m62 (as an owner).. If I need full frame (for low light or shallow dof) I just pull out an old 6d or even a 5d mk1)
@@sharpskilz Yes i need the low light and the shallow DOF hence the R6.. i used to run FF (5Dmk1,,still have) and a travel cam but with the exspens of the R6 that was 3 times my self imposed budget the traval cam got sold ..but i can see myself getting a R50 which is the same size as the M5
Yeah understood. I reallly love the m62 for all its quirks.

I am surprised that this lens has a metal lens mount while more expensive RF-S lenses don't.
Yeah, not sure what Canon's logic is when deciding which lens gets plastic mount.
@@todanrg3I think plastic mount is used to reduce weight, not cost
@@GungKrisna12 Then would have been justified with this lens.
@@todanrg3it's light enough already, anyway... 120g is about the same weight as their RF/EF mount adapter.
What’s the difference between this lens and a wide angle prime? Would the 16mm prime lens give a wider field of view.
I have the 16mm and there's a lot of distortion, it's nice if it's what you're looking for but it's just that I wish I knew there would be that much before I bought it
@@philipbraun Basically I take a lot of landscape and travel photography. I always want a wide angle to get all the scenery in the frame, to match what I can see. That’s why I’ve considered the 16mm lens. I’ve never tried that lens though.
@@notmenotme614 I am far from being professional but for landscape and travel pics, as long as you don't want to do close up I wouldn't hesitate à second. It's, as far as I am concern, for portrait and close up that it's not ideal
FINALLY!
Ooo finally 🙏
I own one, and I just wanted to share that it is not exactly quiet. I would say it’s rather loud and that’s the most annoying aspect of this otherwise decent lens.
I really like this lens. But this is still not something that canon should do, in my opinion. They have a fairly developed budget segment, but there is a huge gap between budget line and large and expensive “L” lenses. If they don’t want to let Sigma, Tamron and other third-party manufacturers into the system, then they should deal with the middle segment themselves. STM line makes sense, but it’s not quite the same as, for example, the 1.8 series from Nikon and Panasonic with sealing and pretty balanced optical characteristics.
1.8 stm lenses are all trash. Nikon, Panasonic, and Sony all have way better 1.8 lenses. It's either spend $2000+ on. 1.2 RF lens or these cheap toy 1.8 primes. I will sell my Canon gear if they don't get their shit together.
Put it to EOS R50 or R100, you can go and shoot some street photos
But what about the nikon 28 vs the canon?.. 26 is gross :)
How come Nikon can bundle their 26mm lens with a hood, and Canon is weaseling out still, trying to nickle and dime you even at the entry level? The distortion is pretty bad for a prime too. But it's sharp, I gotta admit. I feel for Canon users.
No weather sealing. Slow stm motor. Canon makes trash stm lenses or Great expensive L Lenses.
Have you seen how much Nikon's 26mm/28mm costs? And tbh I don't use lens hood with small lens, and stills shooters aren't concern with noisy STM motors. Only videographers complain non-stop on this matter.
This lens makes an excellent companion to the RF 50mm f/1.8 lens. With a 28mm and 50mm in your bags it covers a nice range for street and portraits. Unfortunately both lenses are quite prone to flare and need a hood.
Flare is more often lauded in images than not these days, you'd be surprised
@@benjidoerr There can be a time and a place for flare but when it kills most of the contrast and colour in the image it’s far from ideal.
@@JasondePlater That's still personal preference. I still think you'd be surprised how many people like washed-out, low contrast images from lens flaring, because it gives analog, which is highly desired by many these days.
Can you suggest an adapter for Sony E mount?
You mean Canon RF to Sony E mount? There is none and it is not possible to make one because of the flange distance difference.
@@quikee9195 There is 2mm to play with. Flange back distance is not the issue. The throat diameter might be a problem though. It would depend upon the size of the rear lens element.
@@bradl2636 you're right there is 2mm difference - Nikon to Sony E is 2mm also and you have the adapters for those. But as you say Sony E mount has a smaller diameter, which is exploited by the Nikon Z mount adapters, but adapting Canon RF lenses for Sony E is the other way around (small hole, big mount), which means you have much less space available.
@@quikee9195 Yes it seems so. This might explain why (fortunately) many APS-C lenses work fine on Sony full frame cameras. The 10-18mm f4 OSS works great from 13-18mm (for example). So I guess Canon RF is a no-go - not a big loss I suppose.
From a recent a6700 owner Who had rf mount. I see no point in it. Rf is just super costly. (Sigma 16 and 30 being far better than rf.
Nothing like some good old-fashioned schooling by Canons' optical department to show the competition how to make a wide pancake. It's impressive what they can come up with at times.
A hedgehog!
🦔
Unless my rf 28mm 2.8 is faulty it generally makes more noise than the EF 40mm 2.8 pancake.
Iirc the EF-S 24mm makes noise than the 40mm, but has been a while since I last heard that lens.
However compared to the more affordable, but not pancake, Nikon 28mm 2.8 the Canon is much louder, the Nikon practically being silent. I’m more impressed with the Nikon “affordable” lenses.
Vacation? Vacation? Come on Chris. Wales isn't California. Be proud to be European. Good review though.

Amazing lens, shame that canon cripple their bodies too much. If this was released on the sony E mount, i would instantly buy it to pair with the A7C
Canon hasn’t really crippled any of their bodies since mirrorless
Nikon cant even decide their mind on pancakes they did a plastic 28 then a metal 26 both are poor optically
The Nikon 28 is better in almost every category Chris reviews… less focus breathing, faster af motor, sharper across the frame wide open, less distortion and vignette, practically no flare. So if that’s poor optically, then what do you call this? The 26mm is even better.
@@livejames9374 you must have lived in a different world. That plastic thing can't hold a candle when it comes to CA Longitudinal or Lateral once you open the raw file uncorrected. Corner or edge resolution is poorer than Canon RF28.
@@frankluo230 pull up Christopher’s reviews for both and compare. Everything I said is true according to what he showed. Criticizing a plastic mount is an interesting approach since the canon lens has plastic elements. 😀
This lens shouldn’t be $300…..
Possibly it’s just me but I find 28mm - especially if not bright at all - The Most Boring Focal Length You Could Get On Your Full Frame Camera. Had 28/2 on my Sony, had it twice in few years span an believe me- don’t have a single picture saved from this lens that I would like even a little.
I agree that it's a little boring...but it's definitely useful.
My only comment on this lens is how ugly it looks. I know it makes no difference to the quality but it just looks stupid. A bit like a pin hole camera of old.
Agreed.
Haha but that is for nearly all canon lenses and bodies
Haha ok…you don’t have to get it then…Not sure how it could be improved? Different colour? Give it extra weight with a big no purpose glass element on the front? It’s a pancake lens after all.
For me, that's a cute lens for bringing along with.
Plus no more get bumped in tourist season is a bonus 👍
Yeah, pancake lens looks like a pancake lens, more news at 8. I've been critical of Canon's recent lower budget releases myself, but this one is perfectly solid.
I disagree. 28mm is very useless. 18mm I would buy
underwhelming
Another trash stm lens from Canon. Give us some 1.8 primes with a usm motor please or 1.4 primes with a usm motor.
Not going to fit inside a pancake lens body...
Could anyone explain why they'd want a pancake lens on their R series camera? If you're already shelling out $1500+ on a body, you surely won't be using it for travel/street photography.
It could be a decent option for apsc cameras, some are under $500
Your logic is that those of us who spend quite a bit of money on a full frame R5 would rather leave this camera at home when traveling light or taking pictures on the street? Is it better for us to spend 5 times more money to get an additional Fuji X100V with much worse image quality than this combination?
All kinds of hobbyists who enjoy travel or street photography might want to buy a more expensive camera. And all kinds of professional photographers might want an inexpensive pancake lens for when they're on holiday or just shooting casually out and about. And also, there less much expensive EOS R cameras on the market than that, particularly if you're buying second-hand
